जानकी पुल – A Bridge of World's Literature. जानकी पुल पर प्रकाशित लेखों में प्रकट विचार लेखक के होते हैं. उनसे मॉडरेटर का सहमत होना जरूरी नहीं है. हाँ, अपने लेखों में प्रकट विचारों के लिए मॉडरेटर खुद जिम्मेदार है
सम्पूर्ण क्रांति के नायक लोकनायक जयप्रकाश नारायण के बारे में यह कम लोग जानते हैं कि उन्होंने कुछ कहानियां और कवितायेँ भी लिखी थीं. अक्टूबर के महीने में जन्म लेने वाले और इसी महीने अंतिम सांस लेने वाले लोकनायक की पहली प्रकाशित कहानी ‘टामी पीर’ प्रस्तुत है- जानकी पुल.
शहर के बाहर एक मशहूर पीर का मकबरा है. जिस दिन पीर साहब समाधिस्थ हुए थे उस दिन से हर साल मेला लगता. हिंदू-मुसलमान, मर्द-औरत, बच्चे-बूढ़े सभी जाते, मज़ार पर फूल चढ़ाते, माता टेकते, पैसे नज़र करते और फिर मेले का तमाशा देखते. मेले के दिन के अलावा रोज दस-पांच आदमी मज़ार पर जाते ही.
मकबरे तक शहर से जो सड़क जाती थी, उस पर शहर और मकबरे के बीच एक और छोटी-सी कब्र थी. कब्र पर जो पक्का चबूतरा बना था, उसे देखने से मालूम होता मानो किसी बच्चे की यादगार हो. जो लोग पीर साहब की मज़ार पर पूजा करने जाते वे इस छोटी कब्र के पास भी दम रुक जाते, दो-चार फूल वहां भी चढ़ाते और दुआएं मांगते. मशहूर था की वह मज़ार किसी टामी पीर साहब की है, जो बड़े पीर साहब के शागिर्दों में थे, लेकिन ठीक-ठीक पता किसी को न था. यह भी कभी-कभी सुनने में आता था कि पीर साहब की गद्दी पर जो नए पीर जानशीन थे वे लोगों को मना करते थे कि टामी पीर की मज़ार की पूजा न करें, लेकिन वजह पूछने पर चुप रह जाते थे. कुछ भी हो, सिवा उनके थोड़े से शागिर्दों और पास आने-जाने वालों के और कोई उनकी बात सुनता न था, बल्कि यह कहना ठीक होगा कि जानता ही न था. नतीजा यह होता कि मकबरे को जाते समय टामी पीर की कब्र पर फूल चढ़ते ही, चिराग जलते ही, दुआएं मांगी ही जाती.
मैं भी एक रोज सिर के ख्याल से मकबरे की और निकल गया. रास्ते में वह छोटी कब्र भी मिली. लौटते समय दो-चार मुसलमानों का साथ हो गया, जो पीर साहब से दुआएं मांगकर लौट रहे थे. बातचीत होने लगी. पीर साहब का गुणगान हुआ, उनकी दुआओं में जो ताकत थी उसका ज़िक्र हुआ. एक साहब शायर मिजाज़ थे, उन्होंने दो-चार शेर कहे. इतने में वह छोटी मज़ार आ गई. मैंने उसके मुताल्लिक दरयाफ्त किया. पता चला एक टामी पीर साहब थे, उनकी ही मज़ार है. टामी साहब शायद बड़े पीर के मुरीदों में थे.
मुझे टामी नाम खटका, मैंने उनके सम्बन्ध में कई सवाल किये. शायर साहब के अलावा हमारे बाकी सब साथी अनपढ़ गंवार थे. उन्हें ज्यादा पता तो था नहीं. शायर साहब कुछ जानते हों मालूम नहीं, लेकिन उन्होंने कुछ बताया नहीं. फिर भी उनके बोलने की तर्ज़ से मालूम हुआ वह टामी साहब की कोई खास कद्र नहीं करते. उनकी मजार पर वह वह कभी जाते भी नहीं, हालांकि इश्कमिजाजी का मज़ा लेने के लिए वह मकबरे को अक्सर जाते.
टामी नाम के सबब से और शायर साहब के हाव-भाव से टामी साहब का पूरा हुलिया जानने को मैं बेचैन हो पड़ा. दो-चार हफ़्तों की छानबीन के बाद जो कुछ मालूम हुआ, उससे कभी तो हँसने को जी चाहे, कभी रोने को. हमारा अन्धविश्वास भी हमें कहाँ ले जाकर फेंक देता है.
टामी पीर की कब्र के पास ही एक पक्का बंगला था, उजाड़ और बेमरम्मत, छप्पर सड़ कर गिरा जा रहा था. चहारदीवारी की ईंटें तितर-बितर हो रही थीं. मकान की यह हालत इसलिए हो चली थी कि एक तो शहर तनज्जुली पर था, वहां का व्यापार मंदा पड़ गया था और धीरे-धीरे शहर का शहर उजड़ा जा रहा था. वह बंगला भूतों का बसेरा था. किरायेदार तो कोई आता न था, मकानमालिक भी लावारिस मर गया. उसके वंश के और लोग दूसरे शहर में जा बसे. अब गौर से देखने पर मालूम हुआ कि वह कब्र पहले उस बंगले के अहाते में बनी थी. इस वक्त जो ईंट की एक नीची सी चहारदीवारी उसके चारों तरफ खींची थी वह उस बंगले की चहारदीवारी की ईंटों से ही चुनी गई थी. लेकिन सरसरी निगाह से देखने पर यही जान पड़ता था कि बंगले से कब्र का कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं था.
बंगले और कब्र का इस तरह का ताल्लुक कायम हो गया तब मैंने यह पता लगाने की कोशिश की कि बंगले का पिछला किरायेदार कौन था. मकान मालिक के जो रिश्तेदार दूसरे शहर में चले गए थे, उनसे मिला. वहां सिर्फ इतना ही मालूम हुआ कि ७०-८० वर्ष हो गए, एक गोरा साहब किराये पर उस मकान में रहता और अफीम का व्यापार करता था. बही-खाता देखने पर पता चला कि उसका नाम रॉबिन्सन था. खोज-ढूँढ कर यह भी मालूम हुआ कि साहब अपने मुंशी से हर महीने की आठवीं तारीख को किराया भिजवा दिया करता था. मुंशी जी के दस्तखत कई चिट-पुर्जों पर था, जिनका शोध करने पर पता चला कि उनका नाम था नौरंगीलाल.
अब यह सवाल हुआ कि ये नौरंगीलाल थे कहाँ के और अब इनके घर कोई ज़िंदा है या नहीं? वहां तो और कुछ पता चला नहीं, इसलिए मैं अपने शहर को वापस आ गया. वहां बहुत पूछताछ करने पर अफीम का बूढ़ा दुकानदार मिला, जिसका बाप रॉबिन्सन के साथ कारोबार करता था.
अफीम की खेती बंद हो जाने के सबब से अफीम का व्यापार बहुत मंदा पड़ गया था, लेकिन यह दुकानदार अफीम बेचने का लाइसेंस लेकर एक छोटी सी दुकान लिए बैठा था. नौरंगीलालाल का पता तो उसको न था, लेकिन उसने बताया कि शहर का कोई एक बड़ा रईस हीरालाल है, जिसके बाप-दादों ने अफीम के व्यापार में लाखों रूपए बनाए थे. मैं हीरालाल की गद्दी पर गया. वहां उनके मुनीम से पता चला कि हीरालाल तो नौरंगीलाल का ही पोता है. मुनीम की उम्र कोई सत्तर साल की होगी. मैंने सोचा, नौरंगीलाल के घर का भेद इसे ज्यादा कौन जानता होगा. इधर-उधर की बातें करते-करते रॉबिन्सन के मुताल्लिक बातें होने लगीं- ‘नौरंगीलाल रॉबिन्सन के मुंशी थे और सच पूछिए तो बाबूजी, तो साहब को बूढ़े लाला ने बड़ा उल्लू बनाया था. ऐसे गहरे हाथ मारे कि साहब को पता भी न चला. रुपयों का ढेर उठाकर घर में धर लिया. साहब तो आखिरी दम तक मुंशी जी की ईमानदारी का गुणगान ही करता रहा.’ मैंने साहब के बंगले की बात छेड़ी. बूढ़ा मुनीम मुस्कराया, ‘बाबूजी, भूत-वूत कुछ भी नहीं था वहां. मकानमालिक के पट्टीदारों ने यह सब तमाशा रचा था, ताकि उनकी यह जायदाद खत्म हो जाये. वह बेचारा तो मिट ही गया, ससुरे खुद भी भीख मांगने लगे. दूसरों का जो बुरा करता है, वह कभी सुखी नहीं रह सकता बाबूजी.’
मेरी आँखों में ऐसे कई महानुभावों के चित्र नाच उठे जो दूसरों का खून पीकर मोटे बने हुए थे, लेकिन मुनीम की बातों पर मैं चुप ही रहा, बल्कि सर हिलाकर गंभीरता के साथ अपनी सहमति भी प्रकट की. कुछ देर बाद मैंने टामी पीर का ज़िक्र किया. मुनीमजी खिलखिलाकर हँस पड़े, बोले- ‘आपको नहीं मालूम उस पीर का भेद? आधा शहर तो जानता है.’
मैंने कहा- ‘मैं तो हफ़्तों से इसी छानबीन में लगा हूँ, लेकिन अब तक आपके सिवा मुझे कोई ऐसा न मिला जिसे उसका पता हो.’
बूढ़े ने मुझे अचरज भरी आँखों से देखा. एक ठंढी सांस लेकर बोला- ‘हाँ, अब पुराने लोग हैं ही कहाँ? और यह शहर भी तो उजड़ गया. तो लीजिए, मैं आपके दिल की गुदगुदी मिटाए देता हूँ. टामी पीर रॉबिन्सन साहब का एक प्यारा कुत्ता था. उस वक्त उसे पीरी न मिली थी, सिर्फ एक कुत्ता ही था, लेकिन बहुत अच्छी नस्ल का और सुनते हैं- बड़ा खूबसूरत और बहादुर था. साहब और उसकी मेम उस कुत्ते को जी-जान से प्यार करते. निःसंतान होने के कारण सारा लाड-प्यार उस कुत्ते पर ही न्योछावर कर देते. दुर्भाग्यवश, वह कुत्ता बीमार हुआ और इस दुनिया से चल बसा. साहब और उसकी मेम के शोक का आप अंदाज़ा कर सकते हैं. उन्होंने अपने अहाते के एक कोने में उसे दफनाया और उसकी समाधि का एक अच्छा सा चबूतरा बनवा दिया. सुना है, सुबह को बाग से फूल तोड़कर मियां-बीवी उस कब्र पर रोज रखा करते.’
‘अच्छा यह बात है? तो आज हम और हमारे मुसलमान भाई एक कुत्ते की पूजा कर रहे हैं. मैं तो इसका भंडाफोड किये बगैर न रहूँगा.’ मेरे ये उदगार सुन बूढ़ा मुनीम थोड़ी देर चुपचाप बैठा रहा. फिर धीरे से बोला- ‘जाने दीजिए, बाबूजी, इससे आपको क्या फायदा होगा? जो लोग टामी पीर की कब्र पर आज दुआएं मांगने और श्रद्धा के फूल चढाने जाते हैं, वे थोड़े ही जानते हैं कि वह एक कुत्ते की मज़ार है. उन्हें तो किसी नेक पाक पीर का ही ख्याल रहता होगा. सिजदे और प्रार्थनाओं से उनके दिल का मैल कुछ न कुछ धुलता ही होगा.’
सहसा मैं उस बूढ़े की बात का जवाब नहीं दे सका. कुछ देर चुप बैठा रहा. फिर मुनीम जी को बहुत धन्यवाद देकर कुछ सोचता-सोचता अनमना सा घर लौट आया.
