भारतीय अंग्रेजी के आरंभिक उपन्यासों में से एक ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स‘ के प्रकाशन के 75 साल हो गए. लेकिन उसका गांव मालगुडी, उसका बच्चा स्वामी आज भी हमारी स्मृतियों में वैसे के वैसे बने हुए हैं- जानकी पुल.
१९३५ में भारतीय अंग्रेजी के आरंभिक लेखकों में एक आर. के. नारायण ने एक औपन्यासिक गांव बसाया था मालगुडी. ७५ साल हो गए वह उपन्यास ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ और उसका गांव मालगुडी करोड़ों पाठकों की स्मृतियों में आज भी वैसा का वैसा बसा हुआ है. आर. के नारायण अपने दीर्घ जीवनकाल के दौरान करीब २९ उपन्यास लिखे लेकिन ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ की बात ही कुछ और है. मुल्कराज आनंद के उपन्यास ‘अनटचेबल्स’ के साथ इस उपन्यास को भारतीय अंग्रेजी साहित्य के आधार स्तंभों में माना जाता है. आज भारतीय अंग्रेजी उपन्यासों की विश्व बाजार में धमक है. हर साल कुछ नए लेखकों की अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रकाशकों द्वारा दिए जाने वाले मोटे एडवांस के कारण खूब चर्चा होती है. लेकिन उनमें भारतीय समाज की कितनी कहानी होती है यह लंबे समय से बहस का विषय रहा है. ऐसे में यह याद करना सुखद है कि शुरूआती भारतीय अंग्रेजी उपन्यासों में गांव समाज की कथा उसी यथार्थवादी ढंग से कही गई है जिस तरह से बाद में भारतीय भाषाओँ विशेषकर हिंदी उपन्यासों में कही गई. आर. के. नारायण का उपन्यास ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ इसका जीवंत उदाहरण है.
प्रसंगवश, यही वह उपन्यास है जिसने भारतीय अंग्रेजी लेखन के सामर्थ्य को विश्वस्तर पर साबित किया. विश्वप्रसिद्ध लेखक ग्राहम ग्रीन मालगुडी के बच्चों स्वामी, राजम, मणि के कारनामों से इस कदर रीझे कि उन्होंने आर. के. नारायण को अपना प्रिय लेखक बताया. उन्होंने कहा कि भारत को समझने के लिए इस उपन्यास को पढ़ना चाहिए. अगर मुल्कराज आनंद के पहले उपन्यास ‘अनटचेबल्स’ को छपवाने में इ. एम. फोर्स्टर की महती भूमिका थी तो इस नारायण के उपन्यास ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ को यूरोप में छपवाने के लिए ग्राहम ग्रीन ने व्यक्तिगत तौर पर धन मुहैया करवाया. इसकी कहानी बड़ी रोचक है. आर. के. नारायण ने उपन्यास लिखाकर डाक से इंग्लैंड में अपने एक दोस्त के पास भेज दिया. उसने इसको छपवाने के बहुत प्रयास किये लेकिन सभी प्रकाशकों ने इसको छापने से मन कर दिया. जब नारायण के दोस्त ने उनको इसकी सूचना दी तो नारायण ने अपने दोस्त से कहा कि बजाय उसको डाक से वापस भेजने के वह उसमें पत्थर बांधकर उसे टेम्स नदी में डुबा दे. अंत में उनका वह दोस्त उपन्यास की पांडुलिपि लेकर ग्राहम ग्रीन के पास पहुंचा. उन्होंने इसे पढ़ा और चमत्कृत रह गए. इसकी मासूमियत में खो गए.
ग्राहम ग्रीन की सलाह पर ही आर. के. नारायणस्वामी के नाम से लिखने वाले लेखक ने अपना नाम बदलकर आर. के. नारायण कर लिया. नारायण ने इतने जतन से मालगुडी बसाया था कि जिसने उसे पढ़ा वही उसकी निश्छलता में खो गया. हाल ही में नोबेल पुरस्कृत लेखक मारियो वर्गास ल्योसा ने अपनी पुस्तक ‘लेटर्स टू ए यंग नॉवलिस्ट’ में लिखा है कि साहित्य वास्तव में यथार्थ की पुनर्रचना नहीं होता है. लेखक तो एक ऐसा संसार रचता है जो वास्तविक दुनिया के समतुल्य होता है. वास्तविक संसार से उसकी समतुल्यता जितनी अधिक होती है उतनी ही उसकी कथा विश्वसनीय होती है. इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि दक्षिण भारत के जीवन से अंग्रेजी के पाठकों का असली परिचय इसी उपन्यास ने करवाया.
कहा जा सकता है कि १० साल के बालक स्वामी और उसके दोस्तों के माध्यम से लेखक ने भारतीय समाज के संक्रमण का कथा-रूपक रचने का प्रयास किया है. उसके अलग-अलग पात्र समाज के अलग-अलग मूल्यों का प्रतिनिधित्व करते दिखाई देते हैं. मणि अगर ग्रामीण सहजता और भोलेपन का प्रतीक है तो स्वामी का दूसरा राजम शहरी हृदयहीनता, अक्खड़ता का प्रतीक बनकर उभरा है. वास्तव में, यह उपन्यास नहीं है १९२०-३० के दशक में भारतीय समाज में आ रहे बदलावों को इसकी कथा में पिरोया गया है. नजदीकी रेलवे स्टेशन से ६० किलोमीटर दूर बसा यह छोटा सा क़स्बा धीरे-धीरे अंग्रेजी आधुनिकता के के प्रभाव में भारतीय समाज में आ रहे बदलावों का आइना सा बनता जाता है पाठकों के लिए. कभी बच्चे बड़ों की बातचीत के क्रम में आज़ादी के आंदोलन और अंग्रेजों के बर्बर शासन की कहानी सुन लेते हैं तो कभी मालगुडी में क्रिकेट क्लब की स्थापना करते देखे जाते हैं. अंग्रेजी शिक्षा के बढते प्रभाव की और भी लेखक ने उपन्यास में इशारा किया है.
इसी तरह की घटनाओं, प्रसंगों के माध्यम से बहुत सूक्ष्म रूप से इसमें लेखक ने ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ में आधुनिकता और परम्परा के द्वन्द्व को उभारने का प्रयास किया है. जो कि उस समय के समाज की सच्चाई भी थी. उस समय संयोग से हिंदी, उर्दू लेखन की तरह अंग्रेजी लेखन में भी यथार्थवादी लेखन का जोर था. समाज का उसमें सूक्ष्म अंकन होता था. आर. के. नारायण ने भी उसी यथार्थवादी शैली को अपनाया है लेकिन उनकी प्रविधि गल्पात्मक है और इसीलिए वह अधिक कलात्मक भी प्रतीत होता है. केवल सामाजिक यथार्थ ही नहीं औपन्यासिक कला के निकष पर भी इस उपन्यास का अपना मुकाम है. अकारण नहीं है कि अनेक आलोचक अतिरेक में आकार इसकी गणना बीसवीं शताब्दी के प्रथम उत्तरार्ध के महान उपन्यासों में करने पर जोर देते हैं. बहरहाल, महान हो या न हो एक ‘माइलस्टोन’ अवश्य है.
बहुलार्थों वाले इस उपन्यास की पढ़त कई रूपों में संभव है. एक कथा यह ही हो सकती है कि ‘स्वामी एंड फ्रेंड्स’ में बच्चों के माध्यम से वे उस समय के बनते ‘इण्डिया’ और उसके प्रभाव में आते जाते ‘भारत’ की कहानी कहने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं. यह भविष्य के भारत की तस्वीर है जो औपनिवेशिक शासन से मुक्ति के बाद उभरनी थी. उपन्यास में स्वामी और उनके दोस्तों का भोलापन है तो उसकी दरकन भी है. उपन्यास में एक प्रसंग आता है जब स्वामी और उसका दोस्त मणि एक स्वतंत्रता सेनानी का भाषण सुनते हैं जिसमें वह नेता यह कहता है कि अगर सभी भारतीय जाकर इंग्लैंड पर थूक दें तो वह उसी में डूब जायेगा. स्वामी यह तय करता है उसे इसकी शुरुआत करनी चाहिए. लेकिन मणि जब यह कहता है कि अंग्रेज बड़े ज़ालिम हैं. वे गोली मार देते हैं तो वह अपना फैसला मुल्तवी कर देता है. एक दिन वह अपने हेड मास्टर की छड़ी छीन लेता है.
उपन्यास में बच्चों और बचपन का चित्रण इतनी सूक्ष्मता से किया गया है कि जिसने इसे पढ़ा वही इसका मुरीद होकर रह गया. सबके बचपन के प्रसंग इससे जुड़ने लगते हैं. सबका बचपन होता है, उसकी मासूमियत होती है. जिसे हम सब पीछे छोड़ आये होते हैं. यह उपन्यास हमें उसी मासूम संसार में ले जाता है. शायद यही कारण है कि हर युग में यह उपन्यास प्रासंगिक प्रतीत होता है. १९८६ में जब दूरदर्शन पर ‘मालगुडी डेज’ नामक धारावाहिक का प्रसारण शुरू हुआ उसमें इस उपन्यास की कुछ कहानियां भी थी. धीरे-धीरे मालगुडी नामक वह औपन्यासिक गांव साकार होने लगा और स्वामी नामक वह बच्चा घर-घर का दुलारा बन गया.
कुछ सपने होते हैं जो हमेशा हमारे साथ चलते हैं, हमारी स्मृतियों में कुछ लोग होते हैं, कुछ प्रसंग होते हैं जो हमेशा बने रहते हैं. ७५ साल हो गए स्वामी अब भी बच्चा है, उतना ही मासूम, उतना ही शरारती. मालगुडी एक ऐसे गांव के रूप में बना हुआ है जिस पर समय की खराशें नहीं पड़ी हैं. वह कालजयी बन चुका है.
