हाल में ही अमेरिका के प्रसिद्ध और विवादास्पद लेखक फिलिप रोथ को मैन बुकर अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मान मिला है. उनके लेखन को लेकर प्रस्तुत है एक छोटा-सा लेख- जानकी पुल.
फिलिप रोथ निस्संदेह अमेरिका के जीवित लेखकों में सबसे कद्दावर और लिक्खाड़ लेखक हैं और शायद सबसे विवादास्पद भी. उनकी विशेष पहचान बनी अमेरिकी-यहूदी समुदाय के जीवन को लेकर लिखे गए उपन्यासों से. उनका पहला लघु-उपन्यास ‘गुडबाई कोलंबस’ भी उनके जीवन पर ही आधारित है. इसी उपन्यास से उन्होंने लेखन की एक ऐसी शैली विकसित की जिसमें व्यंग्यात्मक ढंग से गंभीर बातों का वर्णन होता था, जिसकी बाद में उत्तर-आधुनिक उपन्यासों की शैली के रूप में पहचाना गया. लेकिन उनके लेखन की यही एक मात्र शैली नहीं है, बल्कि २० वीं शताब्दी के वे ऐसे अमेरिकी लेखक हैं जिन्होंने लेखन को लेकर सबसे अधिक प्रयोग किए हैं. करीब ५० साल के लेखकीय जीवन में इस ७७ वर्षीय लेखक ने करीब दो दर्ज़न उपन्यास लिखे, कहानियों के तीन संग्रह प्रकाशित किए, विविध विषयों पर लेख लिखे और अपनी विवादास्पद आत्मकथा ‘ अ नोवेलिस्ट्स ऑटोबायोग्राफी’ भी लिखी जिसमें उन्होंने अपने जीवन को बड़ी निर्ममता से उधेड़ा है.
किसी लेखक के बारे में हेमिंग्वे ने लिखा था कि वह कलम के साथ-साथ पेन्सिल का उपयोग करना भी जानते थे. यह बात फिलिप रोथ के बारे में सच कही जा सकती है. उन्होंने जैसा जीवन जिया उसको अपने लेखन में छिपाया नहीं. केवल व्यंग्यात्मकता ही नहीं, सेक्स के खुले वर्णनों के लिए भी उनके उपन्यासों को जाना जाता है. १९६९ में प्रकाशित उनके उपन्यास ‘पोर्तनॉय’ज़ कम्प्लेन’ का इस सन्दर्भ में विशेष तौर पर उल्लेख किया जा सकता है. मन के अंदर की विकृतियों को जितनी सहजता से उन्होंने इस उपन्यास में प्रस्तुत किया है कि अपनी भाषा और विषय के कारण इस उपन्यास ने उनको रातोरात ख्यात लेखक बना दिया और विवादस्पद भी. ‘माई लाइफ एज ए मैन’ उपन्यास का भी इस सन्दर्भ में विशेष तौर पर उल्लेख किया जा सकता है. अमेरिका में रहने वाले यहूदियों की पहचान, उसके संकटों की कथा उनके उपन्यासों को अस्मिताओं के संघर्ष के इस दौर में विशेष प्रासंगिक बनाती है.
केवल शिल्प ही नहीं फिलिप रोथ ने विषयों को भी लेकर लगातार प्रयोग किए हैं और इस मायने में वे ऐसे लेखक साबित होते हैं जिनके लेखन में दोहराव बहुत कम है. उनके उपन्यास ‘सब्बाथ’स थियेटर’ का ध्यान आ जाता है, जो एक पुतला-कलाकार के जीवन पर आधारित है जिसने अब वह काम छोड़ दिया है. प्रसंगवश, बुढ़ापा और बुढाते लोगों के मन की कुंठाएं भी उनके उपन्यासों में जगह पाती हैं और वृद्धों कि दुनिया को एक अलग रौशनी में हमें देखने को विवश करती हैं. यही कारण है कि विवादों ने उनका साथ कभी नहीं छोड़ा. इसके बावजूद कि अमेरिका में उनको सभी प्रतिष्ठित पुरस्कार मिले, आलोचकों का एक बड़ा वर्ग रहा जिसने उनके लेखन को चौंकाऊ, सनसनी फ़ैलाने वाला करार दिया. जबकि ऐसा मानने वाले भी कम नहीं हैं जो यह कहते हैं कि फिलिप रोथ के उपन्यासों में अमेरिका के बदलते मन को पढ़ा जा सकता है, उसके संदेहों को समझा जा सकता है.
उनको मैन बुकर अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मान मिलना वास्तव में उस लेखक का सम्मान है जो धारा के विरुद्ध लिखते हैं, यह जानते हुए कि उसके खतरे क्या होते हैं. बहरहाल, यह पुरस्कार भी बिना विवाद के उनको नहीं मिला. जूरी की एक सदस्य कारमेन कल्लिल ने कहा कि वह एक ही विषय पर लगातार लिखने वाले लेखक हैं और वे तो उनको लेखक ही नहीं मानती. विवाद अपनी जगह हैं, लेकिन इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि २० वीं सदी के उत्तरार्द्ध के अंग्रेजी साहित्य में फिलिप रोथ ने सभ्यता-समीक्षक की भूमिका निभाई है, उसके अंधेरों को उद्घाटित किया है, उसके संकटों को उजागर किया है.
