अरुण प्रकाश हिंदी में बड़ी लकीर खींचने वाले कथाकार ही नहीं थे, एक बेहतरीन इंसान भी थे. उनको याद करते हुए यह संस्मरण लिखा है हिंदी की पहली कविता पर शोध करने वाली युवा आलोचक सुदीप्ति ने. यह एक ऐसा लेख है जो ना केवल अरुण जी की कहानियों को समझने के कई सूत्र देता है उनके व्यक्तित्व को समझने में भी हमारी मदद करता है- जानकी पुल.

अक्सर चीजें मुझे उसी तरह याद नहीं रहतीं जिस तरह घटित होती हैं. साथ ही, कई बार पूरा प्रसंग ही भूल जाती हूँ. यूँ लगता है जैसे मेरे दिमाग का कंप्यूटर ऑटो डिलीट मोड पर रहता है और जिन चीज़ों से लगाव नहीं, जो जरुरत की नहीं या जो घृणा का भाव जगाती हैं उन्हें रीसाइकिल बिन में फेंक देता है. किसी मौके से कोई फिर से प्रसंग दुहराए तो वे बातें याद आती हैं. परन्तु कुछ लोग या घटनाएँ स्मृतिपटल पर यूँ उभरे रहते हैं जैसे डेस्कटॉप के ऊपर लगा स्क्रीनसेवर.
अरुण प्रकाश जी से जो एक खूबसूरत आत्मीय रिश्ता बना, वह कभी याद आने या दिलाने का मोहताज नही रहा. उनसे मैं जिस दिन पहली बार मिली, तब से वे मेरे जीवन में हमेशा जीवंत हैं. आज नहीं हैं तब भी ऐसा नहीं लग रहा कि उनकी जगह मेरी स्मृतियों के स्टोर रूम में है. ऐसा महसूस कर रही हूँ जैसे महज कुछ मेट्रो स्टेशनों की दूरी पर अपने कमरे में लेटे हुए वे मेरा इन्तज़ार कर रहे हैं. लेकिन यह तो लगने वाली बात है. हकीकत तो यही है कि अब वे नही हैं, नहीं हैं और नहीं हैं. मेरे वे पिता अब नहीं हैं जो दिल्ली में मेरी अजमेर से वापसी का लगातार इंतज़ार करते थे. उन्हें पता रहता था कि मेरी छुट्टियाँ कब से हो रही हैं, कब खत्म हो जाएँगी. अब वो यह इसरार करने के लिए नहीं रहे कि लंबी छुट्टियों में कम से कम २-३ बार तो उनसे जरुर मिलूं.
जब उन्हें व्यक्ति के रूप में नहीं जानती थी तब भी उनके लेखन को जितना पढ़ा था, सब कुछ बहुत पसंद करती थी. लेकिन जब उनसे मिलने का संयोग मिला तब कहाँ मालूम था कि उनकी बेटी ही बन जाउंगी. आज भी अच्छी तरह याद है, मैं अभी एम.फिल. की पढ़ाई कर रही थी. एक दिन साहित्य अकादेमी के पुस्तकालय में मुझे अपने शोधकार्य के सिलसिले में जाना था. मेरे गाइड प्रो. मैनेजर पांडेय ने अपना एक लेख दिया था, जिसे ‘समकालीन भारतीय साहित्य’ के संपादक अरुण प्रकाश जी को देना था. वास्तव में वह लेख लेकर उनके पास जाना तो सत्यानन्द निरुपम को था, लेकिन उन्हें अपने विश्वविद्यालय में जरुरी काम था और मैं साहित्य अकादेमी लाइब्रेरी में जा ही रही थी तो निरुपम और मेरे बीच तय यही हुआ कि लेख मैं ही दे दूँ. तो इस तरह से अरुण जी से मिलना एक संयोग मात्र था. मैने उनकी कुछ रचनाएँ पढ़ी थी, लेकिन उनको व्यक्ति के रूप में जानती नहीं थी.
साहित्य मैं तब पढ़ती तो थी, लेकिन साहित्यकारों/संपादकों से मिलने-बतियाने की कला में पारंगत नहीं थी. अब भी नहीं ही हुई हूँ! इसीलिए साहित्य अकादमी पहुंचते ही यह तय किया कि पहले अरुण जी को यह लेख दे दूँ, तब इत्मीनान से पुस्तकालय में अपना काम करूँ. मुझे लगा कि देकर आना ही तो है, पांच मिनट लगेगा. वाकई मुझे यह अंदाजा नहीं था कि उनके केबिन के अंदर जाने और बाहर निकलने के दरम्यान एक व्यक्ति के रूप में मैं बहुत कुछ बदल जाउंगी.
बाहर बैठे कर्मचारी के जरिये अंदर जाने की अनुमति मंगवाई. उनके केबिन में गई तो खड़े-खड़े ही उन्हें वह लेख थमाने ही वाली थी कि उन्होंने बैठने के लिए कह दिया. वे तब कुछ पढ़ रहे थे. जब पढ़ना खत्म हुआ तो उन्होंने मेरे बारे में तमाम तरह की बातें पूछनी शुरू कर दी कि मैं क्या करती हूँ, क्या पढ़ती हूँ, पढ़ने में क्या मुझे ज्यादा पसंद है- कवितायेँ या कहानियां, किस विषय पर शोध कर रही हूँ, वगैरह-वगैरह. मैं ज्यादातर कथा साहित्य पढ़ती थी. इसी बारे में बातचीत होने लगी. मैंने उनकी बहुत कम कहानियां पढ़ी थीं, जिनमें से ‘छाले’ और ‘अथ मिस टपनाकथा’ उस वक्त याद थीं. मैंने इस बात का ज़िक्र किया तो वे चुप ही रहे. ‘छाले’ कहानी का जिक्र आने पर जरुर मुस्कुराये थे, लेकिन कुछ कहा नहीं, पूछा नहीं. जबकि औरों की कहानियों के बारे में मेरी रूचि-अरुचि उन्होंने खूब पूछी. एक लेखक अपनी प्रशंसा इतनी निर्लिप्तता से सुने, यह मैंने पहली बार देखा था.
मेरी बातचीत से मेरी कम समझ साफ़ झलक रही होगी, यह मैं मन ही मन सोच तो रही थी, लेकिन जो कहानियां या कहानीकार मुझे पसंद या नापसंद थे, उनके बारे में खुलकर बता भी रही थी. उन दिनों मुझे नीलाक्षी सिंह की कहानियां बेहद पसंद थीं. मैं ताज्जुब में रहती थी कि यह लेखिका लगभग मेरी समवयस्क है और बैंक में नौकरी भी करती है, फिर भी कैसे इतनी अच्छी कहानियां लिखती है! मैंने उनसे कहा भी. उसके बाद उन्होंने मुझे कहानी विधा के बारे में बहुत सारी सैद्धांतिक बातें बताईं जो कि हिंदी कहानी के बारे में लिखी किसी पुस्तक में मैंने आज तक नहीं पढ़ीं. वो सिर्फ कहानी की संख्या बढ़ाने वाले कथाकार भर नहीं थे, उन्हें कहानी कला की गहरी समझ थी. हिंदी कहानी की आधुनिक दुनिया को समझने के लिए कई विदेशी कथाकारों को पढ़ना कितना जरूरी है और उन्हें पढकर हिंदी के स्टार कथाकारों के जादू का रहस्य कैसे तुरत सामने आ जाता है, यह मैंने उन्हीं से जाना था.
खैर, मैं संपादक, कथाकार या आलोचक अरुण प्रकाश को अभी नहीं याद कर रही. मुझे तो वे अरुण प्रकाश याद आ रहे हैं जिन्हें मैं बेटी लगती थी. जो दिल के साफ़ और उदार मनुष्य थे. मुखौटों की इस दुनिया में आप जीवन और रिश्तों में तभी सफल हो पाते हैं जब आप कृत्रिम व्यवहार निभाना सीख सकें. सुन्दर शब्दों में इसे व्यावहारिक होना कहते हैं, लेकिन मैं इसमें पूरी तरह असफल हूँ. दो टूक खरी-खरी, मुंह की बात मुंह पर कहनेवाले हम दोनों के मन-मिजाज़ में साम्य था इसलिए पहली ही मुलाकात में हम दोनों की खूब बनी.
उसके बाद जब भी अकादमी जाती, उनसे बिना मिले नहीं आती. कभी भी किसी बड़े, नामचीन के साथ मीटिंग कह या दिखा उन्होंने टरकाया नहीं. व्यस्त होते तो हालचाल भर पूछते, लाइब्रेरी आने का मकसद पूछते, लेकिन मिलते खूब खुश होकर. जिस दिन लंबी बात करने का मौका मिलता उस दिन मुझे बहुत कुछ जानने समझने को मिलता. कुछ किताबों और रचनाओं को पढ़ने के सुझाव मिल जाते.
दूसरी मुलाकात के दिन उन्होंने पूछा,‘अच्छा, बताओ कि तुम्हें मेरी कौन-सी कहानी नहीं पसन्द है?’ तब मुझे समझ में नहीं आया कि जब सारे लोग कुछ इस तरह पूछते हैं कि मेरी कौन सी रचना पसंद आई तो अरुण प्रकाश ना-पसंद होने की बात क्यों पूछ रहे हैं? उनकी जिन कहानियों को पढ़ रखा था, उनमें किसी को नापसंद नहीं कर सकी थी. कोई झेल नहीं लगी थी. तो घूम-फिरकर मैं उन्हीं कहानियों के बारे में बात करने लगी जो बेहद पसंद थीं. ‘स्वप्न-घर’ का शिल्प, उसकी काव्यात्मक भाषा और उसमें बीच-बीच में आयीं कुमार विकल की पंक्तियाँ— ये सारी बातें उसे मेरी प्रिय कहानी बना देती हैं. उन्होंने मेरी बात को जैसे एक किनारे रख दिया, न हां, न हूँ और उसकी रचना-प्रक्रिया पर बात करने लगे.
तभी अचानक मैने पूछा कि उनकी कहानी की दुनिया में ‘अच्छी लड़की’ सिर्फ अच्छी है और ‘बहुत अच्छी लड़की’ बहुत अच्छी है, क्यों? उन्होंने बताया था कि वह बहुत अच्छी इसलिए है कि वह दुनिया की परवाह नहीं करती. वह अपने लिए जीती है और अपनी खुशियों की परवाह करती है. जबकि जो ‘अच्छी लड़की’ है वह उन कायदों की परवाह करती है जो दुनिया ने बनाये हैं. इसलिए वह दुनिया की नज़रों में तो अच्छी है, जबकि उसका अपना जीवन बेहद तन्हां और अर्थहीन हो जाता है. उनका मानना था कि लड़कियों को भी अपना जीवन अपनी शर्तों पर, अपनी खुशियों के लिए जीना चाहिए. इसीलिए अच्छी लड़की समाज की नज़रों में तो ‘अच्छी’ थी पर उनकी नज़रों में दया की पात्र और जो लड़की समाज के लिए चाहे भले ही अच्छी नहीं थी, पर उनकी नजरों में ‘बहुत अच्छी’ थी. उस दिन जब मैं उनके पास से आई तो चकित थी कि आखिर वे इतने अलग क्यों हैं.
सिगरेट वो बहुत पीते थे और मुझे लगता है कि सिगरेट का यह धुंआ ही जैसे उनके भीतर के ऑक्सीजन को निगल गया. सिगरेट पीने की बहुत सारी कैफियत भी देते रहते थे. लेकिन पहली ही मुलाकात में सिगरेट से जुडी एक ऐसी घटना हुई जिससे मुझे यकीन हो आया कि वे लड़के-लड़कियों में भेद वाकई नहीं करते थे. मुझे उनके सामने बैठे दस मिनट हुए होंगे कि उनका एक सहायक सिगरेट का एक पैकेट और बचे हुए पैसे देने आया. उन्होंने पैकेट से सिगरेट निकाली और मुझसे पूछा, ‘तुम सिगरेट लोगी?’ मैंने उन्हें आश्चर्य से देखते हुए मना किया. आम तौर पर तो कोई पूछता ही नहीं और ज्यादा सभ्य हुए तो पीने से पहले इज़ाज़त ले लेते हैं. उन्होंने मेरे आश्चर्य को समझा और बताया कि, ‘पहले मैं सिर्फ पुरुषों को सिगरेट ऑफर करता था और महिलाओं से इज़ाज़त ले लेता था. पर एक बार ‘चंद्रकांता’ धारावाहिक की प्रोडयूसर डॉ नीरजा गुलेरी के साथ मीटिंग थी. मैंने मीटिंग में उनसे सिगरेट पीने की इज़ाज़त ली परन्तु उन्हें ऑफर नहीं किया. बाद में उन्होंने मुझे बहुत डांटा कि अरुण क्या तुम भी पुरुषवादी ही हो और यही समझते हो कि स्त्रियां सिगरेट नहीं पीतीं या नहीं पी सकतीं? उसके बाद से मैं इस बात का ध्यान रखता हूँ.’
2006, सितम्बर में मैनेजर पांडेय जी का जे.एन.यू. में विदाई समारोह था, जिसमे अरुण प्रकाश भी आये थे. समारोह की समाप्ति के बाद लोग अलग अलग समूह में बातचीत कर रहे थे. मैं उन्हीं के पास खड़ी थी. उन्होंने किसी प्रसंग में डा. रणजीत साहा या गंगा प्रसाद विमल— किसी से बात करते हुए मुझे इंगित कर कहा कि, ‘ये तो मेरी बेटी की तरह है. उसी की तरह बातें करती है— साफ़ साफ़ और पूरे अधिकार से.’ इससे पहले भी एक बार साहित्य अकादमी में उन्होंने कहा था कि, ‘तुम्हें देखकर मुझे अपनी बेटी गुड्डी की याद आती है. उसी की तरह हो तुम.’ व्यक्तिगत तौर पर कहना एक बात थी और सार्वजानिक तौर पर उसे स्वीकारना दूसरी बात. उन्होंने यह बात कहने भर के लिए नहीं कही थी. वे वाकई मुझे अपनी बेटी की तरह ही देखते, समझते और मानते रहे.
हिंदी समाज में जैसा कि चलन ही है अनजान या जानपहचान की लड़की को बेटी मान लेना, पर बेटी मानने और बेटी के बाप की भूमिका में रहने होने के तमाम फर्क होते हैं. मैं जिस इलाके या परिवार से हूँ या कहूँ कि लगभग पूरी हिंदी पट्टी में ही पिछली पीढ़ियों के पिता अपनी बेटियों को गले लगा, पीठ सहला या कंधे थपका कर प्यार जताने वाले नहीं रहे हैं. अब समय के साथ चलन भले बदल रहा है लेकिन पुरानी पीढ़ी में अब तक ऐसा ही है.
अरुण प्रकाश जी ने पिता जैसा होने के अहसास में कभी भी आशीर्वाद देने, किसी बात पर ढांढस बंधाने या सांत्वना देने के बहाने मेरा सर भी सहलाया हो, या मेरा हाथ भी छुआ हो, ऐसा नहीं हुआ. वे वाकई मुझमें और गुड्डी यानी अमृता में कोई फर्क नहीं करते थे. वे उसी तरह मेरा इंतज़ार करते जैसे पिता बेटी के मायके आने का इंतज़ार करता है. जितनी सहजता से डांटते थे उतनी ही सहजता से अपनी बातों से दुलारते भी थे. उनके स्नेह में कहीं भी डबल स्टैंडर्ड नहीं था.
अरुण प्रकाश से पहले मैं मिली, निरुपम बाद में. ऐसा कम ही हुआ है. ज्यादातर लोगों से निरुपम की वजह से मैं जुड़ी हूँ. लेकिन निरुपम जब उनसे मिले तो वे भी बहुत जल्द उनके बेहद करीब हो गए. दोनों एक दूसरे से ऐसे खुल गए, जैसे जाने कब से एक दूसरे के परिचित हों. निरुपम के प्रति अरुण प्रकाश जी के स्नेह का एक रूप यह भी था कि वे उनको सहेजने में जबतब खूब डांटते भी थे, मानते और सँभालते भी खूब थे.
एक बार मैं अकेले ही उनसे मिलने गई थी. वे दिलशाद गार्डन के, अपने पड़ोस में रहने वाले, किसी इलेक्ट्रिशियन लड़के की तारीफ़ उसकी किसी भी काम को करने की चाहत और दिलेरी की वजह से कर रहे थे. अचानक वे निरुपम के बारे में बोलने लगे.(निरुपम उन दिनों कुछ अच्छी स्थिति में नहीं थे. डीयू में पी.एचडी. में एडमिशन भी नहीं हो पाया था. बेहद निराशा से भरे दिन थे उनके लिए.) मुझे याद है, अरुण प्रकाश जी ने कहा था कि, ‘मुझे उस लड़के की चिंता नहीं. वह अपना रास्ता खुद बना लेगा. कभी भी जिंदगी उसके लिए रास्ते बंद नहीं कर सकती. वह कुछ न कुछ जरुर करेगा. एक चीज़ नहीं होगी तो दूसरी कर लेगा.’ उन दिनों दोस्तों से लेकर तमाम बड़े जन भी हम दोनों के सामने ही निरुपम की तुलना में मुझे ज्यादा प्रतिभाशाली, तेज और काबिल साबित करते रहते थे. मुझे बुरा लगता लेकिन हमारे बीच किसी किस्म की दुविधा कभी नहीं पनपी. क्योंकि निरुपम न कभी कुंठित हुए और न ही मुझे अपने ज्यादा तेज होने का मुगालता ही हुआ. यहाँ बात नीयत की है. जब लोग मेरे सामने निरुपम की कमियां गिनाते नहीं थकते थे तब अरुण प्रकाश जी ने उनकी अनुपस्थिति में भी उनमें कितना गहरा विश्वास जताया था.
दरअसल आदमी की काबिलियत और कमजोरी को पकड़ने में उनकी नज़र कभी कमज़ोर नहीं थी. वाकई ऐसे ही हैं निरुपम. उम्मीद और सकारात्मकता के साथ हर समय एक नयी राह बनाने को तत्पर. एकदम सच कहा था उन्होंने. मैने गौर किया है कि जब निरुपम के सामने पहले से बने तमाम रास्ते बंद हो जाते हैं तो वे शुरू से शुरू करके एक नयी राह बनाते हैं. कई लोगों के साथ हमारे संबंध वर्षों से थे, लेकिन महज कुछ महीनों में अरुण प्रकाश जी ने ही निरुपम को कितना सही पहचान लिया था. बाद के दिनों में जब निरुपम चर्चा में बने रहने लगे तब भी वे उनकी अनुपस्थिति में ही मुझसे तारीफ़ करते थे. सामने में तो बस समझाना और डांटना ही चलता था. कई बार मुझसे भी कहते कि समझाओ इसे. समझाना क्या, छोटी छोटी सावधानियां, जिनको बरतना वे अपने अनुभव के आधार पर सही समझते थे.
अरुण प्रकाश जी ने ‘समकालीन भारतीय साहित्य’ में हिंदी की पहली आधुनिक कविता विषयक मेरे आलेख को जिस तरह प्रमुखता से छापा था, कुछ यादें उससे भी जुड़ी हुई हैं. किसी को भी लग सकता है कि बेटी की तरह मानते थे इसलिए छाप दिया होगा. लेकिन नहीं, मेरी जानकारी में वे इस मामले में किसी तरह की सिफारिश या पक्षपात के खिलाफ रहने वालों में से थे.
जब मैं रिसर्च के सिलसिले में पटना जा रही थी तो उन्होंने सिन्हा लाईब्रेरी के लाइब्रेरियन श्री रामशोभित बाबू के बारे में बताया था. वहाँ से मुझे भरपूर मदद भी मिली. जब मेरा एम.फिल. का शोधकार्य पूरा हो गया, तब एक दिन मैं अपना लघु शोध प्रबंध लेकर उन्हें दिखाने गयी. उसमें मैने ‘स्वप्न’ कविता के कई पाठों को मिलाकर एक अलग भरसक सुसंगत पाठ तैयार किया था. मैंने उनसे कहा कि आप इसको देखिएगा. सुधार परिष्कार के सुझाव दीजियेगा. उन्होंने मुझसे डेजर्टेशन ले कर रख लिया. उसके बाद मैं दो-तीन बार गयी होउंगी, उस बारे में कोई बात नहीं हुई. संकोचवश मैंने भी नहीं पूछा. जब दो महीने से ज्यादा हो गए तब आखिर मैने एक दिन फोन बेसब्र होकर कर ही दिया. मुझे बहुत बेचैनी थी यह जानने की कि वे मेरे काम के बारे में क्या कहते हैं. उन्होंने कहा कि ‘नहीं देख पाया, देखूंगा.’
और उसके चार दिनों के बाद एक सुबह जब मैं जे.एन.यू. के शॉपिंग काम्प्लेक्स में सुबह-सुबह चाय पी रही थी तब उनका फोन आया – ‘अरे! यह (‘स्वप्न’) तो बहुत अच्छी कविता है. इतनी महत्वपूर्ण है कि इसे तो छापना है. तुमने बहुत मेहनत और तैयारी से शोध किया है. तुम आ जाओ. इसके बारे में बात करनी है.’ मैं बहुत खुश! जब मिली तो उन्होंने कहा कि –‘अरे! मैने सोचा कि जैसे सभी काम करते हैं हिंदी में, वैसा ही तुम्हारा काम भी होगा. और इतनी छोटी-सी लड़की भला क्या काम करेगी! जिद कर रही है देखने की तो देख लेता हूँ. लेकिन तुमने तो मुझे चकित कर दिया.’ मुझे केवल एक बात समझ में आ रही थी कि मेरी तैयारी, मेरी मेहनत और ईमानदारी सब सार्थक थे. यह उनके जैसे संपादक की विशिष्टता थी कि उन्होंने एक नामालूम सी शोधार्थी के लिखे को वैसा महत्व दिया.
अरुण जी से वे अंकल बने आंटी के सौजन्य से. आमतौर पर हम (यानी मैं और निरुपम) उनसे साहित्य अकादमी में ही मिलते थे, पर जब उनके बीमार होने की पहली बार खबर मिली थी तब उनके बेटे मनु जी के ग्रीन पार्क वाले किराये के घर में जाना हुआ था. ऑक्सीजन सिलेंडर सिरहाने रखा था, वो मास्क बार-बार लगा-निकाल रहे थे, पर मुझे उतने बीमार लगे नहीं क्योंकि बात करने, बोलने का ढंग ढर्रा पहले जैसा ही था. पता चला, भोपाल गए थे और वहीं बीमार हो गए. शरीर में ऑक्सीजन की मात्रा बहुत कम हो गयी थी. कई दिन वहीं हॉस्पिटलाइज्ड रहे. जब स्थिति सुधरी तब दिल्ली आये.
हमने देखा था कि ‘समकालीन भारतीय साहित्य’ को वे अपने संपादन काल में कहाँ से कहाँ ले आए थे. निर्विवाद रूप से. साहित्य अकादमी के उनके केबिन में बड़े से छोटे लेखकों तक को बैठे देखा था. लेकिन बीमार हुए, अवकाश ग्रहण किया, उसके बाद? अब भी लोगों का आनाजाना था, लेकिन वैसा तांता नहीं रहता था… कुछ किस्से थे और कुछ आत्मीय लोग थे. समर्पित पत्नी थीं और लेखक पिता पर गर्व करने वाले बेटा बेटी थे. दादा पर जान छिडकने वाली एक बड़ी प्यारी सी पोती थी.
बीमारी ने उनके शरीर को कमजोर किया था पर जीवन के उल्लास को नहीं. स्वभाव में चिडचिडापन उस तरह कभी हावी नहीं हुआ जैसा अक्सर ऐसी बीमारी में होता है. उलाहने नहीं देते थे वे, कोसते भी नहीं थे किसी को. जानते थे संसार और संसारिकता क्या है. बाहर आ-जा सकने की असमर्थता की ऊब जरुर आने लगी थी. कुछ कर न सकने की बेबसी भी कभी किंचित झलक जाती थी. पर दूसरे ही पल ठीक होने के बाद के कार्यक्रम तय करने लगते थे. उन सारी चीजों के बारे में जो अधूरी रह गईं थीं.
हिंदी साहित्य को अरुण प्रकाश का अमूल्य योगदान एक तरह से अनदेखा ही है अभी. दिखावा, आत्मप्रचार, मिजाजपुर्सी और लॉबिंग से दूर रहने के कारण चर्चा से भी वे दूर ही रह गए. हिंदी कहानी के गंभीर और ईमानदार जानकार मानते हैं कि उनकी कहानियां हिंदी समाज के यथार्थ से उपजी भारतीय रचनाशीलता का आईना हैं. अंग्रेजी ही क्या, तमाम दूसरी भाषाओं के साहित्य, कलाओं और फिल्मों से वे बहुत गहरे परिचित थे. परन्तु उनकी रचनाशीलता किसी की नकल नहीं, कहीं से चोरी नहीं. बाद के दिनों में आलोचनात्मक लेखन में ज्यादा सक्रिय हो गए थे. अक्सर हँसते हुए कहते थे— ‘कहानीकारों की पूछ कहाँ है हिंदी में, पूछ तो आलोचकों की है. इसीलिए आलोचना लिख रहा हूँ. सब डरते हैं न आलोचकों से.’ मुझे लगता कि मानो अपना ही मजाक उड़ा रहे हों!

सुदीप्ति के बहाने व्यक्ति अरुण प्रकाश से मिलना हुआ .वे बेटी होने के साथ सखी भी रहीं हो , तभी इतनी निजता से मिलवा सकीं . ठीक वैसे ही जैसे मनु ने आज शोकसभा में पहला ही वाक्य कहा था कि वे सिर्फ पिता नहीं थे , मेरे मित्र भी थे, और प्रिय लेखक भी. और अरुण प्रकाश लेखक तो बाद में थे , पहले बीडी- मजदूरों और सिनेमाघर -कर्मियों के जुझारू साथी- नेता थे . माने उन का जीवन भी उन की कहानियों जैसा ही था , जिस में कहानीकार कम से कम दिखाई देता है और समाज ज्यादा से ज्यादा.

मुझे अगर ठीक से याद है तो यह फ़रवरी २००७ की बात है. देशबंधु कॉलेज के बजरंग बिहारी जी से मिलने गया था. उन्होंने कहा कि थोडा रुक जाओ , आज महादेवी जी पर एक लेक्चर है.अरुण प्रकश आ रहें हैं. मैं उन्हें नहीं जानता था..अपनी सीमाओं के कारण . उन्हें जब सुना तो लगा कि इस आदमी को पहले क्यूँ नहीं सुना … फिर उन्हें खोज खोज कर पढ़ा..महादेवी वर्मा को पढ़ते समय अरुण भी कई बार याद आये हैं.. उनका जाना मुझे दुखी कर गया …
बेहद स्नेहिल आत्मीय भीगी हुई यादें इन्हें इतना ही सहज लिखा जाना चाहिए था बगैर किसी लेखकीय आडम्बर के स्नेह और आदर की सच्ची सादगी के साथ…सुदीप्ती ने इसे ऐसी खूबसूरती से उकेरा है कि पढते हुए खुद का जिया भोगा महसूस किया सा लगने लगा ..मानव मनोविज्ञान की सुदीप्ति की समझ भी बखूबी झलकी है ..पहली बार पढ़ा सुदीप्ति को लेखक और कुछ अंशों में व्यक्ति के तौर पर भी, अच्छा लगा,बहुत बहुत मंगल कामनाएं तुम्हे ..आपका शुक्रिया प्रभात (टाइपिंग की गडबडी के चलते कमेन्ट पुन: पुन: लिखा गया 🙁
