कठिन पथ पर चले हुए श्रमित यात्रियों के समान एक इमली की सघन छाया में, जहाँ दो सड़कं मिली थीं, वहाँ वह कब से बैठता था, यह बतलाना कठिन है। कहानियों की भाषा में उसे ‘अनन्त काल’ कहा जा सकता है; पर उसके चारों ओर एक ऐसा प्रचुर विश्राम था कि उसे देखकर ही सारी कल्पना जड़ हो जाती थी। जैसे – वह तरल कल्पना के अन्तिम बिन्दु पर पहुँचकर उसका एक दृढ़ और कटु उपहास कर रहा हो।
झुकी हुई कमर, नागफनी का डंडा, मैली अचकन, डोरों से बँधी हुई ऐनक, बगल में बस्ता दबाए हुए वह आता और अपने मैले लाल-काले धब्बों के बिस्तर पर कुछ मनीऑर्डर फॉर्म, कुछ सादे लिफाफे कुछ पुराने खत और तस्वीरों वाले अखबार लेकर बैठ जाता।
वह डाकमुंशी कहलाता था और पेशे का एक बूढ़ा खतनवीस था। बात यह थी कि एक बार ‘लड़ाई’ के दिनों जब उसके गाँव का डाकमुंशी बिना छुट्टी लिये हुए इसे अपनी कुर्सी पर बिठाकर दूसरे गाँव अपनी मंगेतर को देखने चला गया, तो लोगों ने इसे डाकमुंशी कहना शुरू किया और किस तरह उसने डाकियों पर रोब रक्खा, बड़े-बड़ों को डाँटा और एक शराबी गोरे को थप्पड़ मारा, इन सबकी एक उत्ताल सजीव स्मृति उसके जीवन का एक आवश्यक अंग हो गयी थी। वह वास्तव में उस स्टेज पर पहुँच गया था, जब हम अपने ही असत्य पर विश्वास करने लगते हैं। डाकमुंशी का व्यवसाय कभी दौड़कर भी चला था, यह उसके अतिरिक्त किसी ने भी स्मरण नहीं रक्खा और इन दिनों जब शाम की तम्बाकू भी वह उधार ले जाता था, कोई अपना-पराया…
खैर, उसने इस विषय में गूढ़ चिन्तन किया था। केवल आकस्मिक दार्शनिकता से एक प्रकार की उदासीनता प्राप्त कर ली थी। वह एकाकी था, यह तो कोई बड़ी बात न थी; पर उसका जीवन संकुचित होकर केवल उसके बिस्तर और हरिजन बस्ती में एक कोठरी और खपरैल तक ही सीमित हो गया था और इस अभाव ने उसके जीवन में एक ऐसी विचित्रता और कटुता का समावेश कर दिया था, जिसे वह उसके विशेष सम्बन्ध में ‘उदासीनता’ ही कहकर उसके साथ न्याय किया जा सकता है; पर चीना? यहीं पर उसका जीवन बाधित था, यहीं पर रुककर वह आगे-पीछे देखता था।
लड़कों के गुल-गपाड़े, स्त्रियों के गाली-गलौज, प्रेमियों के दिनदहाड़े चुम्बनों में डाकमुंशी एक साफ कागज पर चीना का नाम लिख अपना टूटा-फूटा कलमदान लेकर पंचायत करने बैठा था। चीना पर अभियोग यह था कि वह अपनी ससुराल से भाग आई थी। दोनों वादियों की सुनकर, जिरह का ईश्यू बनाकर, जो फैसला उसने दिया था, वह दोनों ने नहीं माना। चीना ने अपने उमड़ते हुए यौवन, निखरते साँवले रंग और नेत्रों के अमृत और विष के कारण। वह एक शराबी अहीर की भानजी थी, और जीवन को गेंद के समान उछालती हुई चलती थी, रोज मरदों के ‘दीदे निकालती’ और स्त्रियों को गाली देती और खाती; पर वह एक साधारण सी बात पर अपनी ससुराल से भाग आई, ‘वह ससुराल से भाग आई!’
और वह डाकमुंशी अपने फटे बिस्तर पर पड़ा आँखें फाड़-फाड़कर उस रात को केवल एक यही प्रखर सत्य देख रहा था।
जीवन की गति जब कुछ द्रुत हो जाती है, वह एक विश्राम-सा हो जाता है। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि हमने अपने बन्धनों और सीमाओं पर विजय पा ली, हम संघर्ष से ऊपर उठ गए, पर यह एक कठिन प्रवंचना है। यह न हम जान पाते हैं और न बेचारा डाकमुंशी ही जान पाया।
चीना से उसका कोई पार्थिव सम्बन्ध न था। औपन्यासिक सम्बन्ध की बात वह सोच ही क्या सकता था; पर हम आपको विश्वास दिला सकते हैं कि वह चीना के विषय में यदि चिन्तन करता भी होगा, तो एक विराग, एक तटस्थता के साथ।
साँझ को घर लौटकर वह चीना को सरलता से देखते हुए, खिलखिलाकर हँसते हुए, या किसी पर वाग्प्रहार करते हुए, नित्य देखता; पर उसके प्रत्येक रूप का उस पर एक ही प्रभाव पड़ता और वह घर आकर द्वार सावधानी से बन्द कर लेता और जब चूल्हे के धुएँ से कोठरी अभिमन्त्रित-सी हो जाती, वह आँखों को मलते हुए कहता – हरामजादी !
उसके जीवन में एक अकारण क्षोभ ने स्थान कर लिया था और उसने देखा कि उसके चारों ओर सभी वस्तुएँ दुरूह-सी हो रही हैं। रात में जब उसे नींद न आती, वह अपनी बचपन की बात सोचता, कभी जवानी की कोई विहंगम घटना उसे कचोट-सी लेती; और एक रात तो वह अपने दूर के नातेदार की बात सोच उठा, जिनके साथ वह पिछले कुम्भ में ठहरा था, और उनकी पुत्री – उसे उसका नाम भी स्मरण था – रम्मी; गोरी, दुबली, लजीली; पर न जाने क्यों वह एकाएक प्रेरित-सा हो उठा कि वह ‘कुमारी’ नहीं है और वह उठकर बैठ गया और खाँसने की चेष्टा करने लगा।
चीना को उसने कई बार समझाने का निश्चय किया। क्यों? हमें विश्वास है कि यदि वह सोचता तो कारण की नगण्यता से कुंठित हो जाता; पर वह कई बार उसको बाजार से लौटते हुए, बछड़ों को रँगते हुए अकेली पाकर ठिठका; पर प्रयत्न कर भी कुछ न कह सका और देखा कि वह एक लापरवाह स्थूल हँसी हँस रही है। वह फिर खीज उठता और कभी-कभी उस दिन ग्राहकों से उलझ जाता।
कल्पना, जीवन और प्रकृति के विरुद्ध विद्रोह है। हम सूक्ष्म और सूक्ष्मातिसूक्ष्म अनुभूतियों और सहानुभूतियों के छाया-पंखों पर जीवन की तुच्छताओं और बन्धनों के ऊपर उठने का प्रयत्न करते हैं और कठिन वास्तविक जीवन को एक बार भुलावा दे देते हैं। डाकमुंशी ने भी यही किया। कब किया? इसके अनुसंधान के लिए हमें उसके गूढ़तम अन्त:देश में पैठना होगा, जहाँ से उसका सारा व्यापार एक क्रूर व्यंग्य प्रतीत होता था; पर चीना को उसने कल्पना के रंगों में रँगकर एक निश्चिन्तता का लाभ किया। उसने उसे एक निर्धारित स्थान देकर संतोष की साँस ली। अब वह चीना की ओर विषद सहानुभूति से देखता, उसके पति की बात सोचता, जो नित्य शराब पीकर उसका अपमान करता होगा, वह निर्लज्ज बाजारू स्त्री का ध्यान करता, जो चीना का जीवन नरक बनाए होगी और कभी-कभी सचमुच उसका गला रुँध जाता। एक बार उसने उस खद्दरधारी नवयुवक को भी अपनी कल्पना में स्थान दिया, जो कुछ दिन हुए सुधार के बहाने वहाँ रहा था और कई लड़कियों से छेड़खानी करता देखा गया। न जाने वह कैसे सोच गया कि चीना के भाग आने का कारण वही है; पर इस काल्पनिक असंयमता ने उसे फिर विकल कर दिया और जब उस दिन अपनी दुकान पर बैठे हुए उसने चीना को ‘भूसी’ की गठरी सिर पर लादे हुए जाते देखा, वह सिहर गया। भूसी बेचकर जब वह लौटी, तो मुस्कराकर आँखें नीची कर डाकमुंशी के पास आई और एक खत लिखवाना चाहा।
‘चार पैसे हिन्दी-उर्दू पोस्टकार्ड, पाँच पैसे लिफाफा आधा तोला, छे पैसा एक तोला। मनीऑर्डर एक आना, तार के लिए वहाँ जाओ, साफ-साफ बोलना होगा।’
एक यंत्र के समान डाकमुंशी बड़बड़ा गया, जो दिन में वह कई बार दुहराता था।
चीना ने ‘गंगा माई’, ‘गो माता’ की सौगन्ध खिलाकर अपने ससुराल वाले नगर के किसी दारोगा को एक पत्र लिखवाया और डाकमुंशी ने लिख दिया और डाक में डाल दिया। चीना एक बार फिर सौगन्ध खिलाकर, मुस्कराकर, बल खाकर चली गई; पर डाकमुंशी, जैसे वह केन्द्रविहीन हो गया हो, जैसे वह एक बार फिर जीवन आरम्भ कर रहा हो। जैसे वह पिछले जीवन का एक अप्रिय अतिथि हो। और उस साँझ को लौटते हुए जब एक बालक ने उसे रोककर इकन्नी के पैसे माँगे, वह एकदम हिंसक हो गया और आहत सर्प के समान फुफकारकर बोला –
‘सूअर!’
जिसने भी डाकमुंशी को देखा, उसने उसे कभी इससे पहले इस रूप में नहीं देखा था।
