हिंदी साहित्य में क्लासिक की खोज में युवा लेखक-पत्रकार विनीत उत्पल ने हिंदी के कुछ प्रमुख लेखकों से बात की और यह जानने की कोशिश की कि आखिर उनकी नजर में कालजयी कृतियाँ कौन-सी हैं. उदय प्रकाश, राजेंद्र यादव, निर्मला जैन, काशीनाथ सिंह, विश्वनाथ त्रिपाठी, चित्रा मुद्गल और देवेन्द्र राज अंकुर के ‘क्लासिक्स’ यहां प्रस्तुत हैं- जानकी पुल.

बाजार और प्रचार
देश के हर शहर में पाठय़-पुस्तकों की दुकानें मिल जाती हैं लेकिन साहित्यिक किताबों की अलग दुकानें शायद ही दिखेंगी। यदि संयोगवश किसी दुकान में साहित्यिक कृतियां मिलेंगी तो उन किताबों की जगह किसी कोने में होगी। इसका सीधा-सा मतलब है कि या तो हिन्दी की साहित्यिक कृतियों की मांग नहीं है या फिर विक्रेता जागरूक नहीं हैं। आज हर शहर में म्यूजिक स्टोर दिख जाते हैं। मॉल्स, मेट्रो स्टेशनों, हवाई अड्डों पर जो भी बुक शॉप हैं, वहां अंग्रेजी की किताबें धड़ल्ले से बिक रही हैं लेकिन हिन्दी साहित्य का कोना दिखाई तक नहीं देता। रेलवे स्टेशनों पर जो भी दुकानें हैं, वहां या तो पुरानी साहित्यिक पुस्तकें हैं या फिर वही पुस्तक हैं जो यात्रियों के लिए टाइम पास का काम करती हैं। वहां सस्ता साहित्य अधिक होता है।
पुस्तकों की बिक्री के मामले में पाठकों को दोष नहीं दिया जा सकता क्योंकि यदि पुस्तकें नहीं बिकतीं तो शहर-शहर पुस्तक मेलों का आयोजन भी नहीं होता। किताब बिकने या न बिकने से अधिक इनकी पब्लिसिटी का दोष है। आज हिन्दी फिल्मों का बाजार व्यापक हो रहा है लेकिन हिन्दी रचनाओं का बाजार सिकुड़ रहा है। हिन्दी की रचनाओं की पब्लिसिटी कितनी होती है, यह सवाल अहम है। इस बात से इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता कि पब्लिसिटी के आधार पर ही लोग फिल्में देखने जाते हैं और वह रिलीज होने से पहले ही हिट करार दी जाती है। जब फिल्मी कलाकार को हीरो/हीरोइन के तौर पर प्रमोट किया जा सकता है तो किसी लेखक को क्यों नहीं असली हीरो के तौर पर प्रमोट किया जा सकता है। ऐसे में, यदि किसी किताब की पब्लिसिटी की जाए तो जाहिर सी बात है कि वह किताब धड़ल्ले से बिकेगी। समय बदल चुका है। अब कोई भी दर्शक पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में समीक्षा पढ़कर फिल्म देखने नहीं जाते। यही हाल साहित्यिक रचना का है। यही कारण है कि पुस्तक समीक्षा छपने की प्रथा पुरानी हो चुकी है। यदि किसी पुस्तक के बारे में छपती भी है तो सिर्फ परिचय। अहम बात तो यह है कि परिचय और समीक्षा प्रायोजित होने लगे हैं। यही कारण है कि समीक्षाओं को सिर्फ लेखक ही पढ़ते हैं, आम पाठकों को इससे कोई ज्यादा लगाव नहीं होता। यदि समीक्षा पढ़कर किसी किताब की बिक्री होती तो हिन्दी की किताबें बेस्ट सेलर बनी होतीं।
