मनोहर श्याम जोशी ने १९६० के दशक में एक उपन्यास लिखना शुरू किया था- ‘किस्सा पौने चार यार’. इस उपन्यास का एक अंश १९६६ में ‘विग्रह’ नामक पत्रिका में छपा था. उपन्यास पूरा नहीं हो पाया. उस अधूरे-अप्रकाशित उपन्यास का एक अंश आपके लिए- जानकी पुल.

उझकि झरोखा झांके
जिस वास्तुकार ने राजधानी के नए दुमंजिले ‘जी टाइप’ क्वार्टरों में झरोखों की व्यवस्था की है उसकी इंजीनियरी की आत्मा में निश्चय ही कोई विफल कवि अथवा सफल ठेकेदार-हितैषी बसा है. उपयोगिता से आक्रान्त इस युग में भला और कौन ऐसे आलंकारिक झरोखे बनवा सकता था जिसमें किसी संभावित उप-किरायेदार से यह कहने की गुंजाइश नहीं कि समझे भाई साहब, रसोई आपकी इस बालकनी में मजे से बन जायेगी. दरअसल, ये झरोखे इस कदर तंग हैं कि दो व्यक्ति बहुत ही दुविधा में इनमें खड़े हो सकते हैं. भगवान भला करे रूमानी साहित्य का कि पब्लिक को इसी दुविधा में सुविधा नजर आती है, और इस सुविधाप्रियता की कृपा से मुझ जैसे लेखकों को बैठे-ठाले ही कहानियों के प्लॉट झरोखों से झांकते मिल जाते हैं.
झरोखों के संबंध में, झरोखों जितनी ही आलंकारिक और अनुप्रयोगी इस भूमिका के बाद अब आपसे जी-५३० के झरोखे पर मूर्तिमान एक किस्सा बयान करता हूँ. शुरुआत शुरु से गोया नायिका के वर्णन से होनी चाहिए. मगर अफ़सोस कि नायिका के नख नजदीक से देखने का मौका इस लेखक को, काफी कोशिशों के बावजूद, अब तक नहीं मिल पाया है. एक बार रजिंदर मार्केट में गोलगप्पे खाने वाले के यहां झलक सी जरूर दिख पड़ी थी, औसत दर्जे के नाखूनों पर औसत दर्जे के नेल पेंट, और उस नेल पेंट पर औसत दर्जे की रोशनाई के दाग! शिख! वह भी औसत, यानी दो काली चोटियाँ, दो गुलाबी रिबन और माथे पर उठे हुए दो चिकने-चमकते केश पुंज. रंग सांवला, कद नाटा, चेहरा चहचहा, नक्षत्र चपटे, आंखें चटकीली. शिक्षा? औसत, दिल्ली में दसवीं में फेल होने के बाद यू.पी. से मैट्रिक की तैयारी में है. उम्र? बस-कंडक्टर को ग्यारह बताई जाती है, वह तेरह समझता है, और अजब नहीं कि कुंडली चौदह कहती हो.
हमारी नायिका ने इस दुनिया में बरस बहरहाल जितने भी बिताए हों उन सब का समूचा अनुभव अपने मोटे-गीले होंठों पर संजोकर वह क्वार्टर के झरोखे पर खड़ी रहती है. यहीं केश संवारते हुए भातखंडे की ‘पहले पुस्तक’ से किसी राग का आरोह-अवरोह आलाप जाता है. अंजन-मंजन करते हुए फ़िल्मी धुनें गुनगुनाई जाती हैं. चाय की चुस्कियां लेते हुए या गंडेरी चाबते-चूसते हुए, भीतर बैठे बैठे हुए किसी व्यक्ति से ऊंचे स्वरों में संलाप किया जाता है. झुमके या मोतीमाला से खेलते हुए पाठ्य-पुस्तकों का जोर-जोर से पारायण किया जाता है. गरज यह कि जहान का ध्यान खींचने की हरचंद कोशिश की जाती है. आप जानिये हिन्दुस्तानी इस कदर ध्यानदास हैं कि आप घास न डालें तो भी वे दीदे फोडें और मारें. तो क्या ताज्जुब कि हमारी नायिका सारी हरिनिवासपुरी की नजरों और बातों में समाने लगी हैं.
यह तो हुई नायिका. रहे नायक तो साहब जी- ५३० के झरोखे से झांकने वाली को ताकने वाले सभी लड़कों-जवानों और बूढों से आपकी मुलाकात कराने के लिए तो नई दिल्ली चौदह से तकरीबन सभी डाकियों का काम मुझे अकेले करना पड़ेगा. मुआफी चाहता हूँ. बहरहाल, मैं आपकी मुलाकात उन तीन, बल्कि साढ़े तीन नायकों से जरूर करवाना चाहूँगा जो इस मोहिनी बाला के गोया मोहपाश में विधिवत बंध चुके हैं.
पहले मिलिए ५२८ यानी बाला के क्वार्टर से ठीक नीचे वाले क्वार्टर में रहने वाले एक दुबले-पतले कंगले किशोर से. आप अल्मोड़ा जिले के किसी कस्बे से दसवीं पास करके अपने मामा के यहां आए हुए हैं, इस गरज से कि डबल रोटी खाने और खुदा का नाम लेने लायक बन सकें. क्लर्की पाने की कोशिशें कामयाब करने के लिए आप पंजाब इंटर और पिटमैन शॉर्टहैंड दोनों की तैयारी एक साथ कर रहे हैं. फिर इस सिलसिले में बाहर गलियारे में खटिया डाल देते हैं और किताबों से करीबी रिश्ता कायम करते हैं. फिर जब उधर से गुनगुनाने की आवाज आती है तो आप धीरे धीरे औंधे से सीधे हो जाते हैं और किसी तरह हिम्मत करके होंठों को चुंबन वाली मुद्रा में दे डालते हैं. झरोखे के मुंडेर पर दो आंखें चमक उठती हैं, दो ओंठ बिचक जाते हैं, एक मुँह लटक जाता है, और एक जुबान ‘लिरिलिरि’ बोल देती है. किशोर साहब चांद के सामने किए गए वादों की याद बुलाने और आँख के सामने खुली किताबों में मन लगाने की कोशिश में जुट जाते हैं, उसमें किसी कदर कामयाब भी होते हैं, कि तब, हाय ऐन तभी ताप से एक कंकड़ गिरता है और खात की चरमराहट की कसम, आदिलिप्सा के संकेत आशुलिपि के संकेतों से अधिक शक्तिवान साबित होते हैं.
हमारी नायिका का दूसरा गुणग्राहक है एक बांका बंगाली बालम जो काफी जमाना और जनाना देख चुकने के बाद अब बंगाली बाबू हुआ चाहता है. जिम्नास्टिक और फुटबॉल के लिए पहले जैसा उत्साह नहीं रहा. उत्तम और हेमंत दोनों एक साथ बन जाने के अरमान साऊथ देहली बंगाली कल्चरल क्लब के मंच पर दम तोड़ चुके. एम.ए. में तीन नंबर से फर्स्ट क्लास चूक जाने और सिफारिश न होने के कारण आई.सी.एस. के इंटरव्यू में रह जाने की बात सुनाने में पहले जैसा रस नहीं आता. संतोष है तो यही कि न हुए आई.सी.एस. असिस्टेंट तो हो गए. न मिला फ़िल्मी हीरो का पद, स्थानिक हीरो का पद तो कहीं गया नहीं. मोशाय का क्वार्टर ‘जी’ ब्लॉकों की दाहिनी ओर सरोजिनी मार्ग के उस पार, स्पेशल ‘एफ’ ब्लॉक में है. मार्केट या बस स्टैंड पहुँचने के लिए कायदे से आप को ‘जी-५३०’ के सामने से नहीं जाना चाहिए, लेकिन कोशिश सुश्री कायदा देखती कहां है? लिहाजा सुबह शाम आप अक्सर हमारी नायिका पर कृपा दृष्टि डाल जाते हैं. एकाध सवाल-जवाब हो जाता है.
“शाम को आना भूलिए नहीं. रवीन्द्रनाथ सिखाने के लिए कहा था जो.”
“आउंगा, लेकिन आने में देरी होगी.”
“सुनिए कल तो आपकी छुट्टी है, माँ कहती है, दुपहर बेला आपका भोजन यहीं होगा. आयेंगे तो?”
“अवश्य.” और कुछ रूककर, आवाज में प्यार की मिकदार कुछ बढाकर, “निश्चय ही.”
हमारी नायिका के तीसरे मुरीद हैं, जी- ५३२ यानी दायीं ओर के ऊपर वाले क्वार्टर में रहने वाले एक अधेड़ सज्जन, जो ढीली-ढाली तोंद, खिचड़ी बालों और धंसी हुई आंखों तले उभरी झाइयों के बावजूद बड़े ठस्से से अपने अभी जवान होने का ऐलान करते घूमते हैं. हरिनिवास पुरी में आप अपने एक बहुत दूर के रिश्तेदार के साथ पेईंग गेस्ट की हैसियत से रहते हैं. आपका कोई अपना बिजनेस है, जिसका अता-पता सारी बस्ती में किसी को नहीं है, लेकिन चूंकि आपकी अपनी नई चमचमाती कार है इसलिए यह अनुमान किया जाता है आपकी पहुँच वाकई बहुत दूर तक होगी. सवेरे आप दाढ़ी बनाते हुए झरोखे की शोभा बढाते हैं. बैठते इस तरह हैं कि नायिका के क्वार्टर की तरफ आपकी पीठ रहे. जब बगल के झरोखे से वह परिचित स्वर उठता है तो आप शून्य में ताकते हुए, अँगुलियों कथकलि की-सी मुद्रा बनाते हैं और फिर आईने का कोण ठीक करके जवाब का इंतज़ार करते हैं. उस सांवली सलोनी सूरत का अक्स कभी दाएं से बाएं घूमता है और कभी ऊपर से नीचे. न होने पर निश्वास छूट जाता है, हाँ होने पर चेहरा चमक उठता है. आप उठते हैं, नायिका से मुखातिब होते हैं और फिर रोज नियम से निम्न वार्तालाप होता है.
“पढ़ती है बेटी?”
“हाँ.”
“पढ़-पढ़, पढ़ने में बड़ा फैदा है. तबियत कैसी है तेरे बाप की?
“अच्छी है कुछ.” हमारी नायिका यह जुमला मुश्किल से पूरा कर पाती है है कि बाप खुद झरोखे पर आ पहुँचते हैं. “आरे शेठ साइप! आप अच्छे तो? ओ आपका डॉक्टर जो दाबा दिया अमको उससे ओनेक फैदा हुआ. ब्लाड प्रेशर, छाती दर्द, क्या बोले जो, बेशी कौम लेकिन औ जो पेशाब का तकलीफ, कम हो गया जास्सी.”
“पुरानी बीमारी धीरे-धीरे ही जानी हुई न.” तीसरा नायक फिर दाढ़ी का सामान बटोरते हुए कुछ इस तरह की टिप्पणी करता है, “मैंने आपके वास्ते एक चंगा टॉनिक रख छोड़ा है. आप अपनी बेटी को भेज मंगवा लेना जी. और मैंने प्रेसीडेंट के फिजिशियन से भी बात की है. किसी दिन आपको उससे भी एक्जामिन करवा देना है. आप भी तो इस मोहल्ले के प्रेसीडेंट हो राय साहब.”
तीसरे नायक की इस टिप्पणी पर नायिका मुस्कुराती है, नायिका का पिता हो-हो करके हँसता है. जिस समय यह बातचीत चल रही होती है नायिका का साढ़े तीनवाँ कद्रदां, जो नायिका के क्वार्टर में उप-किरायेदार है, अपने कमरे में बैठा हुआ कोई मोटी-सी, शायद मुश्किल सी भी पोथी बांचता होता है. उसकी बक-दाढ़ी और उसके सुनहरे फ्रेम का चश्मा इस पोथी के सान्निध्य में उसे इंटेलेक्चुअल घोषित करते हैं. लेखक के मन अक्सर यह जिज्ञासा होती है कि यह ससुरा कौन-सी पोथी बांच रहा है? यह भी कि इसकी त्योरियों पर बल पड़े हैं. वे पोथी के दुर्बोध विषय के कारण हैं या तीसरे नायक के प्रति दुर्दम ईर्ष्या के कारण? वह नायिका का पूरा कद्रदां है. इंटेलेक्चुअल होते हुए भी ऐसी मूढ़ नायिका का पूरा कद्रदां है, इस बारे में लेखक पूरे विश्वास के साथ कुछ नहीं कह सकता. इसीलिए उसने उसे अच्छे कद्रदां का ही दर्जा दिया है. त्योरियों में पड़े हुए उन बलों के बाद लेखक को वह वह चमक भी इस व्यक्ति को नायिका का साढ़े तीनवाँ यार बनान की प्रेरणा देती है, जो झरोखे की तरफ खुलने वाली खिड़की से नायिका के झाँकने पर उसकी आंखों में पैदा होती है.
‘हेलो!” कहती है नायिका और साढ़े तीनवाँ यार मुस्कुरा कर उठता है.
पूछता है, “बाथरूम खाली है बेबी?”
नायिका माला का पेंडेंट मुँह में डालते हुए सिर हामी में हिलाती है. साढ़े तीनवाँ यार साबुन तौलिया वगैरह उठता है लेकिन उसकी एक निगाह बराबर नायिका पर रहती है और वह यह देखकर संतोष का अनुभव करता है शायद कि नायिका बराबर उसे देख रही है. वह फिर नायिका से मुखातिब होता है और पूछता है, “तुमको कुछ होना क्या?”
अक्सर नायिका चौकलेट, टाफी जैसी कोई चीज मांगती है जो साढ़े तीनवाँ यार तुरंत आकर दे देता है और नायिका का गाल थपथपाकर गुसलखाने की राह पकड़ता है. लेकिन कभी-कभी, और ज्यादातर ऐसा तब होता है जब नायिका की सौतेली माँ घर पर न हो, नायिका पूछती है, “कोई बुक है?” और साढ़े तीनवाँ यार इधर-उधर देखकर कहता है, “बुक, ओ आच्छा.” नायिका दौडकर अपने कमरे में चली जाती है. और साढ़े तीनवाँ यार अपने कमरे की दोनों खिड़कियों के परदे खींचने लगता है. लेखक की कल्पना के लिए कई चुनौतियाँ प्रस्तुत होती हैं. बुक थी तो साढ़े तीनवें यार यार को तुरंत दे क्यों नहीं दी? नायिका अपने कमरे में उप-किरायेदार के कमरे में जाने के लिए ही गई? आखिर ऐसी किस खतरनाक बुक की नायिका ने मांग की थी कि साढ़े तीनवें यार ने देने(या साथ बैठकर पढ़ने) से पहले खिड़कियों पर परदे खींचना जरुरी समझा.
परदा के खुलने, साढ़े तीनवें यार के तैयार होकर कंधे पर झोला लटकाए नीचे उतर जाने के बाद, झरोखे से झांकती नायिका उससे कहती है, “बुक तो बहुत मजेदार, लेकिन बुक से भी जास्ती तो आप जानते हैं.” साढ़े तीनवाँ यार कुछ झेंपकर उधर देखता है और बाय-बाय करते हुए कहता है, “मैं बहुत बुक पढ़ा है न, इसलिए.”
कायदे से यह कोशिश भी यहीं खत्म हो जानी चाहिए जो इस लेखक ने पत्रकार की हैसियत से साहित्य रचने की खातिर शुरु की थी. शेष सब पाठक-पाठिकाओं की कल्पना पर ही छोड़ दिया जाना चाहिए. लेकिन सवाल यह है कि उनकी कल्पना किसके भरोसे पर छोड़ दे? क्या कितनी कल्पनाएँ उससे अर्थ से अनर्थ नहीं हो जाएगा? और अगर सब कुछ उनकी कल्पना था तो इतना भी क्यों लिखा? उनकी कल्पना फुर्सत मिलने पर अपनी पसंद की कोई कहानी अपने आप सोच लेती. तो क्या लेखक अपनी कल्पना से काम ले? लेकिन उससे तो इस शर्त का उल्लंघन होगा कि भोग हुआ यथार्थ ही लिखा जाना है? और जहां तक नायिका का सवाल है उसे मैं कसमिया तौर पर भोगे हुए यथार्थ में शामिल करने की स्थिति में नहीं हूँ. साहित्य की खातिर उसे भोगे हुए यथार्थ की सीमा में लाऊं? इस झरोखा झाँकने वाली पर लिखने के लिए इसे जियूं? अफ़सोस यह कि मेरे लिए अंडरएज है और अंडरब्रेन भी.
क्या कहा? लेखक को पत्रकार की हैसियत से इन नायकों का निकट परिचय पाने कि कोशिश करनी चाहिए क्योंकि नायिका का यथार्थ उनका भोग हुआ यथार्थ हो सकता है.
चलिए यह भी सही. हालांकि साढ़े तीनवें यार को छोड़ के वे सब मुझे सोहबत करने लायक मालूम नहीं होते.
