‘एक भाई का क़त्ल’शीर्षक से ही लगता है खूनखराबे वाला उपन्यास होगा, जिसमें रहस्य-रोमांच की गुत्थियाँ होंगी. लेकिन तुर्की के युवा लेखक बारिश एम. के इस उपन्यास में अपराध कथा के साथ एक बड़ी सामाजिक समस्या का ऐसा तड़का लगाया गया है कि तुर्की के इस्ताम्बुल की यह कहानी तीसरी दुनिया के हर उस बड़े शहर की कहानी लगने लगती है जहाँ अंधाधुंध ‘विकास’ ने हजारों बच्चों को सड़कों पर आवारा बना दिया है. इस साल हिंदी में इतने बोरिंग उपन्यास छपे हैं कि यह अनूदित उपन्यास उन सबसे अच्छा लगा मुझे. उस उपन्यास को पढ़कर मैंने कुछ लिखने की कोशिश की है- प्रभात रंजन

कहते हैं किसी समाज की जटिलताओं को समझना है, उसकी स्याह गलियों से गुजरना हो तो वहां की अपराध कथाओं को पढना चाहिए. क्या यह सच है कि जिस समाज में तहें अधिक होती हैं वहां अपराध कथाओं की लोकप्रियता अधिक होती है. तुर्की के बारे में कहते हैं कि उस देश के पास जितना दिखाने को है उससे अधिक छिपाने को है. एक इस्ताम्बुल सैलानियों का है, एक इस्ताम्बुल अपराध कतः लेखकों का है. फिलहाल मुझे थ्रिलर लिखने वाले बड़े लेखकों में एक नाम एरिक ऐम्बलर का याद आ रहा है जिन्होंने कई उपन्यासों में इस्ताम्बुल की भूलभुलैया की सैर करवाई थी. बहरहाल, आज चर्चा बारिश एम के उपन्यास ‘एक भाई का क़त्ल’ का. बारिश एम तुर्की के युवा लेखक हैं. वे ऐसे लेखक हैं जो महज मनोरंजन के लिए 200-250 पृष्ठों के उपन्यास नहीं लिखते हैं, जिनको आप हवाई जहाज, ट्रेन की यात्रा के दौरान अपन साथ लेकर चढ़ें और सफ़र की बोरियत को दूर करने के लिए उसके पन्ने पलटते जाएँ. लेकिन इसकी कहानी ऐसी नहीं है. आप पन्ने पलटते पलटते ठहर जायेंगे. यकीन मानिए. एक लोमहर्षक कहानी जिसमें अपराध कथाओं की परंपरा का रोमांच भी है और हमारे समकालीन जीवन की चुनौतियों की कथा भी.
कहानी बस इतनी सी है कि कमाल नामक एक पत्रकार का क़त्ल होता है, जिसकी बहन यास्मीन तमर सेज्गिन नामक सबसे बड़े सुपारी किलर के पास जाती है ताकि उसके माध्यम से अपने भाई के क़त्ल का बदला ले सके. यास्मीन खुद भी किसी का अकूत काला धन धोखे से अपने नाम करवा चुकी है और थोड़ी बहुत जेल की सजा भी काट आई है. तमर वह इंसान है जिसे नौ जिंदगियां मिल चुकी हैं, उम्र ढल चुकी है लेकिन अब भी उसका नाम बड़ों बड़ों के हाड़ कंपा देता है. जब यह लगने लगता है कि सब कुछ बड़ी आसानी से हो जायेगा. यास्मीन को अपने भाई का कातिल मिल जायेगा, तमर को उसकी कीमत मिल जाएगी और कहानी ख़तम. लेकिन यह ऐसा सस्पेंस थ्रिलर नहीं है जिसमें सारा किस्सा गुत्थियों को सुलझाने का है.
असल में यह उपन्यास ऐसा नहीं है जैसा आरम्भ में लगता है. बल्कि उपन्यास एक बड़े संगठित अपराध का चेहरा दिखाता है जिसमें बच्चों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है. उपन्यास की कहानी के केंद्र में तुर्की का इस्ताम्बुल शहर है, वह इस्ताम्बुल जहाँ 40 हजार से अधिक बच्चे सड़क पर आवारा हैं, यानी स्ट्रीट किड्स. आंकड़े बताते हैं कि उन हजारों बच्चों में करीब 16 हजार बच्चे ऐसे हैं जिनका सम्बन्ध कम से कम एक अपराध से रहा है. आखिर वे लोग कौन हैं जो बच्चों को अपराध की दुनिया में धकेलते हैं- उपन्यास की कहानी इसी गुत्थी को सुलझाने की कोशिश करती दिखाई देती है. उपन्यास एक बड़ा सवाल उठाती है कि जब राज्य अपने मासूम बच्चों के जीवन में बदलाव नहीं ला पाती है तो अपराध उनके जीवन में बदलाव लाने की दिशा में सक्रिय हो जाता है. बिना किसी लोड के उपन्यास अपनी पूरी कथात्मकता के साथ इस हौलनाक पहलू की तरफ इशारा करता है.
उपन्यास में जब मैं यह पढ़ रहा था कि कि स्ट्रीट चिल्ड्रेन थिनर का नशा करते हैं तो मुझे याद आया कि दिल्ली के स्ट्रीट चिल्ड्रेन्स में भी रुमाल में थिनर डालकर उसे सूंघने का नशा आम है. हमारे शहरों में भी हर साल हजारों बच्चे गायब हो जाते हैं, जिनका कुछ पता नहीं चलता. वे कहाँ जाते हैं? बारिश एम का यह उपन्यास ऐसे सवालों की तरफ हमारा ध्यान जाने अनजाने ले जाता है. उपन्यास में यह बताया गया है कि बड़े शहर लावारिस बच्चों के लिए सबसे खतरनाक है. इसमें एक रिपोर्ट के हवाले से यह कहा गया है कि तुर्की में हर सातवें बच्चे के सड़क पर आने की सम्भावना रहती है.
एक ज़माना था जब इस तरह की कहानियां, फ़िल्में सामने आती थी जिनमें लावारिस बच्चों के प्रति करुणा दिखाई जाती थी और यह दिखाया जाता था कि उनके जीवन में सुधार की उम्मीद थी, बदलाव की गुंजाइश थी. अब वह गुंजाइश भी जाती रही. पूंजीवादी खेल अपने चरम पर है. हर वह चीज जायज है जिससे पूँजी का निर्माण होता हो. मुझे याद आता है बरसों पहले अमेरिकी लेखक इ. एल. डॉक्ट्रो का उपन्यास आया था ‘बिली बाथगेट’, जिसमें एक लावारिस को अपराध की दुनिया का बेताज बादशाह बनते दिखाया गया था, अपने बिग बी. की फिल्म ‘दीवार’ की भी यही कहानी थी.
‘एक भाई का क़त्ल’ एक ऐसा उपन्यास है जिसे आप साँसें थामकर पढेंगे और और आखिर तक आते-आते कह उठेंगे- हैं! ऐसा भी होता है. हत्या, अपराध और बदले की कहानी से शुरू हुआ इस उपन्यास का कथानक एक बड़े सामाजिक घाव की सीयन को जैसे उघाड़ कर रख देता है. बड़ी देर तक दर्द टभकता रहता है!
और हाँ, पहले पढने में, और फिर लिखने में इतना बह गया कि यह भूल ही गया कि अनुवाद किसने किया है- शुचिता मीतल ने. अच्छा अनुवाद अक्सर अनुवादक के नाम को भुला देता है. मेरे साथ अक्सर ऐसा होता है कि जब मैं कोई खराब अनुवाद पढता हूँ तो उसके अनुवादक का नाम याद रह जाता है! अच्छे अनुवादकों के नहीं. धन्यवाद शुचिता मीतल, हमारी भाषा को समृद्ध करने के लिए.
