शोक, पीड़ा, और कर्त्तव्य: विश्व सिनेमा में करुण रस की फिल्में (भाग- १)
भारतीय शास्त्रीय परंपरा में रस सिद्धांत विमर्श में विभिन्न विद्वानों का एक विशेष दृष्टिकोण रहा है कि मूल रस क्या है? कश्मीरी शैव दार्शनिक अभिनवगुप्त के अनुसार शांत रस समस्त रसों का मूल है। जिस तरह समुद्र में सारे तरंग वापस विलीन हो जाते हैं, उसी तरह सारे रस और भाव अतंत: शांत रस में वापस समाहित हो जाते हैं। (इसकी विवेचना लेखमाला की आखिरी अंकों में विशेष रूप से की जायेगी)। ‘साहित्यदर्पण‘ के रचियता विश्वनाथ कविराज अद्भुत रसों को सभी रसों का मूल मानते हैं, जिसकी चर्चा हम पिछले अंकों मे कर चुके हैं। आठवीं सदी की महान संस्कृत कृतियाँ ‘मालतीमाधव‘ और ‘उत्तररामचरित‘ के रचियता भवभूति के अनुसार कारूण्य रस समस्त रसों का मूल है।
संभवतया भवभूति का विचार रहा था कि चित्त घनीभूत अवस्था में रहा करता है, और सबसे पहले चित्त को पिघलाना होता है, जो किसी तरह की करूण भाव से हो सकता है। शायद यहाँ करूणा का बृहत अर्थ है, जिसमें किसी के भी दु:ख या कष्ट के वर्णन से मानव का दु:खी हो जाना है। महान रूसी लेखक दोस्तोयेवस्की के अनुसार कोई भी बुद्धिमान मनुष्य सदैव दु:खी और मानवता के कष्टों से व्याकुल ही रहेगा।
यहाँ सुमित्रानंदन पंत की इन प्रसिद्ध पंक्तियों का खण्डन करना होगा– वियोगी होगा पहला कवि, आह से उपजा होगा गान। निकलकर आँखों से चुपचाप, बही होगी कविता अनजान।यहाँ वियोग का अर्थ रति भाव और शृंगार रस से है, जो कि कारूण्य रस से नितांत भिन्न है। (इसकी विवेचना शृंगार रस पर लेख में विस्तृत रूप से की जायेगी)।
वाल्मिकी रामायण के रचना का आधार इस श्लोक को माना जाता है जब एक बहेलिये के बाण से नर क्रौंच (सारस) के वध पर उसकी मादा की पीड़ा ‘आदि कवि‘ की पीड़ा और करूणा का कारण बन गयी।
मा निषाद प्रतिष्ठां त्वमगमः शाश्वतीः समाः ।
यत्क्रौंचमिथुनादेकमवधी काममोहितम् ।।
(रामायण, बालकाण्ड, द्वितीय सर्ग, श्लोक १५)
कारूण्य रस का स्थायीभाव है – शोक।
शोक भाव किसी सामान्य पीड़ा या दु:ख के अर्थ में नहीं है। प्रेम विरह में दु:ख होता है, किसी के डाँट देने पर भी कटु अनुभव होता है। लेकिन ये सब शोक नहीं हैं। शोक का अर्थ किसी तरह की अपूरणीय क्षति है, जिसकी किसी तरह से भरपायी नहीं की जा सकती हो। उदाहरण के तौर पर किसी प्रियजन की मृत्यु।
यह सामान्य जनों का प्रश्न है कि शोक किसी तरह से सौंदर्य या रसास्वादन की वस्तु कैसे हो सकता है? ग्रीक दार्शनिक अरस्तु का कहना था कि कला से उत्पन्न भय, शोक, दया आदि दु:खों से भाव विरेचन होता है, जिससे मन हल्का हो जाता है। अभिनवगुप्त के अनुसार ऐसे शोक के उपरांत स्थिर चित्त से शांत मनन किया जा सकता है, जो सुखकारी होता है। ‘विश्वनाथ कविराज‘ कहते हैं कि कला से उत्पन्न आँसू किसी तरह के दु:ख का प्रमाण नहीं है बल्कि सहृदयता का प्रमाण है। जमर्न दार्शनिक कांट के अनुसार कोई सौंदर्यशास्त्रीय दु:ख नहीं होता है। किसी भी कलाकृति (चित्र, संगीत, नाटक आदि) में वर्णित दु:ख से उत्पन्न दु:ख सुखदायी होता है।
कारुण्य रस का अर्थ किसी नायक के साथ जबरदस्त हानि पर आ कर खत्म नहीं होता, बल्कि वैसे दुर्योगपूर्ण क्षण के उपरांत होने वाले कई दुखद घटनाओं और पीड़ापूर्ण जीवन से लिया जाता है। हतोत्साह, निराशा, दुर्बलता, रूदन, मरण जैसे संचारी भाव से शोक भाव तक पहुँचा जाता है। शोक भाव के अनुभाव हैं – शाप के संताप, प्रिय से आशा रहित विरह, धन की नाश हो जाना, बंदी बना लिया जाना, किसी स्थान से जबरदस्ती हटा दिया जाना (देश निकाला), दुर्घटना या किसी तरह का दुर्भाग्य। सात्विक भाव में चेहरा का रंग उड़ जाना, स्वर भंग होना, मिर्गी आना जैसे भाव आते हैं।
भरतमुनि के नाट्यशास्त्र के अनुसार कारूण्य रस तीन तरह के होते हैं:
• धर्मानुकूल आचरण में बाधा
• बहुत बड़ी व्यक्तिगत हानि जैसे कि धन का नाश
• किसी प्रियजन का निधन
विश्व सिनेमा में लगभग सभी महान निर्देशकों ने कारूण्य रस पर अविस्मरणीय कृतियों का निर्माण किया है। अत: सभी की चर्चा करना इस लेख की सीमा में कठिन है।
नाट्यशास्त्र के अनुसार पहली तरह का कारूण्य रस (धर्मानुकूल आचरण में बाधा) थोड़ा जटिल है। इसको बहुत अच्छी तरह से दिखाया था मुंशी प्रेमचंद ने अपनी कालजयी कहानी ‘बूढ़ी काकी‘ में। जब रूपा रात को उठ कर अपनी बेटी और चचेरी सास को देखती है, उस समय का वर्णन ऐसा है: –
“ठीक उसी समय रूपा की आँख खुली। उसे मालूम हुआ कि लाड़ली मेरे पास नहीं है। वह चौंकी, चारपाई के इधर–उधर ताकने लगी कि कहीं नीचे तो नहीं गिर पड़ी। उसे वहाँ न पाकर वह उठी तो क्या देखती है कि लाड़ली जूठे पत्तलों के पास चुपचाप खड़ी है और बूढ़ी काकी पत्तलों पर से पूड़ियों के टुकड़े उठा–उठाकर खा रही है। रूपा का हृदय सन्न हो गया। किसी गाय की गरदन पर छुरी चलते देखकर जो अवस्था उसकी होती, वही उस समय हुई। एक ब्राह्मणी दूसरों की झूठी पत्तल टटोले, इससे अधिक शोकमय दृश्य असंभव था। पूड़ियों के कुछ ग्रासों के लिए उसकी चचेरी सास ऐसा निष्कृष्ट कर्म कर रही है। यह वह दृश्य था जिसे देखकर देखने वालों के हृदय काँप उठते हैं। ऐसा प्रतीत होता मानो ज़मीन रुक गई, आसमान चक्कर खा रहा है। संसार पर कोई आपत्ति आने वाली है। रूपा को क्रोध न आया। शोक के सम्मुख क्रोध कहाँ? करुणा और भय से उसकी आँखें भर आईं। इस अधर्म का भागी कौन है? उसने सच्चे हृदय से गगन मंडल की ओर हाथ उठाकर कहा— परमात्मा, मेरे बच्चों पर दया करो। इस अधर्म का दंड मुझे मत दो, नहीं तो मेरा सत्यानाश हो जाएगा।“
यहाँ प्रेमचंद एक औऱ बहुत बड़े सत्य से अवगत कराते हैं कि शोक के सम्मुख क्रोध कहाँ। प्रश्न ये उठता है कि चार मूल रसों से उत्पन्न चार अन्य रस क्या कहीं ज्यादा ताकतवर होते हैं?
क्या ये कहा जा सकता है कि रौद्र के उपरांत शोक, वीरता के बाद अद्भुत, वीभत्स के बाद भयानक, शृंगार के बाद हास्य रस की उत्पत्ति कहीं ज्यादा असरदार होती है?
धर्मानुकूल आचरण में कैसी बाधा आ सकती है? आमतौर में यह बाधा नैतिक विमर्श बन जाती है। अत: अधिकांश ऐसी बाधा नायक के अंतर्द्वंद्व से या नासमझी से, या किसी घोर दुर्भाग्य से उत्पन्न होती है।
टॉल्सटॉय के महान उपन्यास The Death of Ivan Illych (1886) से प्रेरित कुरोसावो की महान फिल्म Ikiru (1952) में एक नौकरशाह को पता चलता है कि उसे पेट का कैंसर है और उसे जीने के लिये केवल एक साल से भी कम बाकी हैं। अपनी जिंदगी का मकसद ढूँढता नौकरशाह तमाम कठिनाईयों से लड़ता हुआ एक गंदे नाले को पार्क बना देने में दिन रात जुट जाता है। यह वीर रस नहीं, बल्कि नायक की वीरता भी आसन्न मृत्यु से उसकी जीवन के प्रति करूणा से उत्पन्न होती है। फिल्म के करूण दृश्यों में बूढे नायक का झूले पर बैठ कर बर्फीली रातों में गाना, उसके वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों द्वारा उसका हक मार लेने, एक कमउम्र लड़की द्वारा झिड़क देना प्रमुख है। फिल्म का पटाक्षेप शोक से होता है, ठीक उसी तरह जैसे हम आनंद (1971) फिल्म आनंद की वीरता से अधिक उसकी मृत्यु के कारण उत्पन्न शोक से याद रखते हैं। किसी बुरे आदमी के मरने का शोक नहीं होता, शोक उसके लिये किया जाता है जो किसी तरह हम से जुड़ा होता है। कहा जा सकता है कि दर्शक स्वाभाविक रूप से वीर और धर्मानुकूल आचरण से जुड़ते हैं। अत: ऐसी किसी भी बाधा हमारे लिये शोक का कारण बन जाती है। Ikiru जैसी फिल्में हमारे समाज में नीतिगत आचरण में बाधा के लिये शोक का प्रतीक है। हर सभ्यता रिश्वतखोरी, अहंकारी, बदमिजाज और बेईमान लोगों से भरी है। ऐसा शोक कभी नहीं खत्म होने वाला।
महान निर्देशक रॉबर्ट ब्रेसों Robert Bresson (1901–1999) जिनके सामने आंद्रे तारकोवस्की, गोदार्द, इंगमर बर्गमैन सरीखे दिग्गज सर नवाजते थे, ने अपने साठ साल के कैरियर में मात्र चौदह फिल्मों का निर्देशन किया। उनकी प्रमुख फिल्में थी Diary of a Country Priest/ Journal d’un curé de campagne (1951), Pickpocket (1959), Au hasard Balthazar (1966), The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962), Mouchette (1967), The Devil Probably/ Le diable probablement (1977), Money/ L’argent (1983) । बहुधा वो प्रचार प्रसार से दूर रहते थे। उनकी फिल्में ज्यादा पैसे नहीं कमाती थी। ऐसे में पैसे जुटाना उनके लिये हमेशा बड़ी समस्या रही। इन्होंने शोक और धर्मानुकूल आचरण पर सारगर्भित कार्य किया।
उनकी फिल्मों की खासियत थी कि उन्हें नाटकीय अभिनय का फिल्मों में इस्तेमाल करना बिल्कुल गवारा नहीं था, इसलिये हमेशा नये गैर पेशेवर कलाकारों से अपनी फिल्मों को सजाया–सँवारा। कई आलोचकों के अनुसार उनकी फिल्मों में कलाकार भावशून्य नजर आते थे, और केवल हाथों की हरकत, कदमों की चाल जैसे भंगिमा से उनकी फिल्मों में बातें कही जाती थी। ब्रेसों के अनुसार ऐसा नहीं था, बल्कि वह कलाकारों के स्वाचालित आकर्षण, नैसर्गिक सुषमा को कैद करना चाहते थे। वे सिनेमा और मूवी में अंतर करते हैं। उनके अनुसार मनोरंजन करने वाली फिल्में, जिन्हें ‘मूवी‘ कहा जाये वह किसी नाटक का फिल्मा लिया रूप है और वहीं ‘सिनेमा‘ इससे कहीं बढ़ कर है जहाँ इस नयी कला के माध्यम से कई अनुभूतियाँ उभर कर आती है, जिसकी अलग वास्तविकता है। भारतीय शास्त्रीय सौंदर्यशास्त्र के सिद्धांतों की ही तरह वे भी बुद्धि और तर्क के बजाय अनुभूति पर जोर देते हैं। फिल्मों में अभिनय की आलोचना करते हुये उनका कहना है कि अभिनय एक तरह का विक्षेप है, जो अभिनेता भी इस बात को महसूस कर रहा होता है, जहाँ सिनेमा में जीवन उभर कर आना चाहिये न कि विक्षेप। एक महान फ्रेंच लेखक और विचारक François-René de Chateaubriand (1748- 1848) शटोब्रिजाँ के तत्कालीन कवियों के बारे में की गयी टिप्पणी को उद्धृत करते हुये उन्होंने अभिनय के बारे में ठीक ऐसी ही राय रखते हुये कहते हैं – “उनमें स्वाभाविकता की कमी नहीं, उनमें स्वभाव की कमी है।” नाटकों के बड़े प्रशंसक होते हुये भी ब्रेसों ने अपने काम से दुनिया को नये तरह की सिनेमा से अवगत कराया। उनकी फिल्मों मे अभिनेताओं के बजाय ‘मॉडल‘ हुआ करते थे, जो संवाद को बिना समझे, रट कर अपने अहसास में बोला करते थे औऱ इस तरह बेजोड़ संपादन से महान कृति की रचना की जाती थी। लेख विधा के जनक Michel Eyquem de Montaigne मॉंटेन (1533-1592) के वक्तव्य को ब्रेसों दोहराते हैं कि हम अपने भाव मुद्रा और भंगिमा में कहीं ज्यादा सच्चाई के साथ नजर आते हैं। श्रीयुत कोहल जैसे भारतीय पारंपरिक सौंदर्यशास्त्री ब्रेसों के सिनेमा के बारें कहेंगे कि ये महान निर्देशक दुनिया को यह याद दिलाना चाहते हैं कि सात्विक भावों (जो कि अनजाने से हो उठने वाले भाव हैं) से भी रस की प्राप्ति होती है, जिन्हें बहुधा लोग भूल जाया करते हैं।
फिल्म Pickpocket (1959) एक पॉकेटमार की कहानी है कि किस तरह वह पॉकेट मारना सीखता है और किन हालातों में वह जेल चला जाता है। अपराध और ग्लानि का संयोजन, उंगलियाँ का खामोशी से कोट के अंदर से बटुआ चुराना जैसे अपराध दर्शकों के अंदर वैसी ग्लानि और शोक भाव पैदा कर देते हैं। समाज के ऐसे हाशिये पर पड़े लोगों पर क्या बीतती है यह किसी और ने उनसे बेहतर नहीं दिखाया। चोर और डाकू के नजरों से दुनिया देखने की जरुरत किसको पड़ी है? लेकिन साहित्यकार के बाद ऐसे फिल्मकार सच्चे
