आलोक जैन की व्यापार में असफलता, उनकी सनकों को लेकर अनेक किस्से हैं, कुछ मैं भी सुना सकता हूँ, मगर मृतात्मा की निजता का सम्मान होना चाहिए. आज समय उनके कार्यों को याद रखने का है. साहू शांति प्रसाद जैन ने भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ की स्थापना दुलर्भ साहित्य के प्रकाशन के लिए की थी, उन्होंने ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार की शुरुआत की, जो आज भी भारत में साहित्य का श्रेष्ठ सम्मान बना हुआ है. पिछले करीब एक दशक से इस संस्था के आजीवन ट्रस्टी के रूप में भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ को नया रूप देने में उन्होंने बहुत अहम भूमिका निभाई. चाहे पुरस्कार राशी में वृद्धि के लिए किये गए उनके प्रयास हों या ज्ञानपीठ को एक आत्मनिर्भर संस्था के रूप में बनाए रखने के लिए किये गए प्रयास नेपथ्य में आलोक जैन की ही भूमिका रहती थी. पिछले एक दशक में भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ को युवा साहित्य को बढ़ावा देने वाले प्रकाशन के रूप में उन्होंने एक नई छवि देने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई. नवलेखन पुरस्कार के माध्यम से युवाओं को पहचान देने का जो काम ज्ञानपीठ ने शुरू किया था, यह बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं कि आलोक जैन के प्रयासों के कारण ही ऐसा संभव हो पाया था.
एक जमाने में दिनकर, पन्त, जैसे लेखक उनके घर आया जाया करते थे. दिनकर जी की डायरी में आलोक जी और उनके पिता जी, माता जी का बहुत उल्लेख है. मुझे याद है एक बार नया ज्ञानोदय पत्रिका में दिनकर के खिलाफ लिखा मैथिलीशरण गुप्त का एक पत्र छप गया था तो उसे पढ़कर वे बहुत नाराज हो गए थे. उन्होंने मेरे सामने संपादक रविन्द्र कालिया को फोन कर के आपत्ति दर्ज करवाते हुए अपना रोष प्रकट किया था.
अपने आखिर वर्षों में सिर्फ युवा लेखन को बढ़ावा देना ही नहीं आलोक जी युवा लेखकों के लगातार संपर्क में रहते थे. सबसे फोन पर जुड़े रहते थे. ऐसे दौर में जब बिना कद या पद के हिंदी में किसी को कोई नहीं पूछता हो वे युवाओं के साथ दोस्ताना सम्बन्ध बनाए रखते थे. यह एक दुर्लभ गुण था. यह गुण शायद उनमें अपने पिता से आया था जो हमेशा लेखकों की मंडली जमाये रखते थे.
हिंदी की दुनिया कृतघ्न है. वहां ऐसे सेवियों को याद करने का रिवाज नहीं है. फिर भी मैं असंख्य स्मृतियों के साथ उनकी स्मृति को प्रणाम करता हूँ.
