इससे पहले राजेश खन्ना की जीवनी पढ़ी थी. यासिर उस्मान की लिखी हुई. आजकल फ़िल्मी कलाकारों की जीवनियों का ऐसा दौर चला हुआ है कि पढ़ते हुए डर लगता है- पता नहीं किताब कैसी निकले? लेकिन शशि कपूर की जीवनी ‘द हाउसहोल्डर, द स्टार’ पढ़कर सुकून मिला. ऐसा नहीं है कि असीम छाबरा की लिखी इस जीवनी में ऐसी कोई नई बात मिली हो पढने को जो पहले से सार्वजनिक न रही हो लेकिन अपने प्रिय अभिनेता के बारे में एक किताब में उनके जीवन, सिनेमा के बारे में पढने को बहुत कुछ मिला. शशि कपूर अपने जीवन के आखिरी दौर में हैं. दुर्भाग्य से यह पहली किताब है जो उनके वास्तविक मूल्यांकन की कोशिश करती दिखाई देती है, सिनेमा में उनके योगदान को रेखांकित करती है.
शशि कपूर के जीवन में बहुत कुछ है जो ‘बायोग्राफी पॉइंट ऑफ़ व्यू’ से उनके जीवन को महत्वपूर्ण बनाती है. कपूर भाइयों में वे अकेले थे जिन्होंने लम्बे समय तक अपने पिता के पृथ्वी थियेटर के लिए काम किया- सात साल तक. कपूर भाइयों में वे अकेले थे जिन्होंने ‘धर्मपुत्र’ जैसी सामाजिक संदेश देने वाली फिल्म से नायक के रूप में अपना कैरियर शुरू किया. जिस फिल्म का निर्देशन बी. आर. चोपड़ा ने किया था. हालाँकि इस तरह की फिल्म से अपना कैरियर शुरू करने के बावजूद वे किसी एक तरह की इमेज में नहीं बंधे. प्रेमी, अपराधी, छलिया, डाकू शशि कपूर ने हर तरह के निर्देशकों के लिए हर तरह की फ़िल्में की. जिसकी वजह से जब उनेक बड़े भाई राज कपूर ने जब उनको अपनी फिल्म ‘सत्यम शिवम् सुन्दरम’ के लिए साइन किया तो उनको ‘टैक्सी’ कह दिया था यानी ऐसा कलाकार जो किसी भी तरह की फिल्म कर लेता है, किसी के भी साथ.
बहरहाल, वे हिंदी सिनेमा के अकेले इंटरनेशनल स्टार थे और मर्चेंट-आइवरी प्रोडक्शन्स के लिए उन्होंने ‘हीट एंड डस्ट’ समेत अनेक फिल्मों में काम किया. मेरी सबसे पसंदीदा फिल्म ‘मुहाफ़िज़’ है, जो अनीता नायर के उपन्यास ‘इन कस्टडी’ के ऊपर बनी थी और जिसमें शशि कपूर ने उर्दू शायर नूर साहब का किरदार निभाया था. शशि कपूर ने ‘जूनून’, ‘कलयुग’ समेत अनेक फिल्मों का निर्माण भी किया और जूनून में फिल्म में प्रेमी का जो किरदार उन्होंने निभाया है वह नहीं भूलने वाला है. इसी किताब से मुझे पता चला कि फिल्म ‘बॉबी’ का दिल्ली-यूपी में वितरण का अधिकार भी उन्होंने खरीदे थे और ‘मेरा नाम जोकर’ के बाद जब राज कपूर के ऊपर से फिल्म डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर्स का भरोसा हिल गया था तो सबसे पहले शशि कपूर ने ही कहा था कि यह फिल्म ब्लॉकबस्टर साबित होगी.
बहरहाल, असीम छाबरा की लिखी इस जीवनी में शशि कपूर के थियेटर जीवन, थियेटर को लेकर उनके प्यार और जेनिफर के साथ उनके प्यार और दीर्घ वैवाहिक जीवन को लेकर विस्तार से लिखा गया है. वही इस किताब की उपलब्धि भी है कि एक इंसान के रूप में शशि कपूर को पहचानने की कोशिश है. उस शशि कपूर को जिसने बी, सी ग्रेड की फ़िल्में धड़ल्ले से की लेकिन जब निर्माता बने तो सोद्देश्य फिल्मों का निर्माण किया. परदे पर चालू. छलिय प्रेमी की भूमिकाएँ निभाने वाला अदाकार पक्का घरेलू इंसान था. किस तरह अपनी पत्नी की मौत एक बाद वह बिखरता चला गया, किताब के आखिरी अध्याय में इस बात को उनके करीबियों के हवाले से बहुत अच्छी तरह दिखाया गया है.
शशि कपूर के जीवन, उनकी कला के अनेक शेड्स थे. किताब में सबको छूने की कोशिश की गई है. यह कोई यादगार जीवनी नहीं है लेकिन एक ऐसे कलाकार को उसका उचित दर्ज़ा दिलाने की कोशिश इसमें बड़ी शिद्दत से दिखाई देती है जिसको अपने जीवन सक्रिय दिनों में कभी वह मुकाम नहीं मिला जिसके वह हकदार थे. 2014 में जब उनको दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार मिला तो वे डिमेंशिया के शिकार हो चुके थे.
अपने छोटे आकार में असीम छाबरा की यह पुस्तक शशि कपूर से प्यार करने के लिए विवश कर देती है. उस शशि कपूर से जो सुन्दरता कि मिसाल थे. एक बार जरूर पढने वाली जीवनी है. शुक्रिया असीम छाबरा मेरे प्यारे अभिनेता के जीवन पर इतने प्यार से लिखने के लिए!
