कुछ दिनों पहले अंग्रेजी के प्रसिद्ध प्रकाशक-लेखक डेविड देविदार से एक इंटरव्यू में जब यह पूछा गया कि आपको क्या लगता है कि अगले पांच सालों में अंग्रेजी प्रकाशन जगत में किस तरह के बदलाव आयेंगे? उन्होंने कहा कि आनेवाले समय में सबसे बड़ी चुनौती ई-बुक से आएगी. लेखक और पाठक के बीच सीधा रिश्ता कायम होता जायेगा और प्रकाशक जगत की इजारेदारी कम होती जायेगी. इसलिए ज़रूरत इस बात की है कि प्रकाशक समय की नब्ज़ को पहचानें और समयानुकूल साहित्य का प्रकाशन करें. साहित्य के व्यवसाय से जुड़े लोग इन दिनों भविष्य-चिंतन कर रहे हैं. वह भविष्य जो निर्णायक बदलाव की दिशा में बढ़ रहा है. इंटनेट की बड़ी होती लकीर, फ्लिपकार्ट.कॉम जैसे ऑनलाइन बुकस्टोर की बढ़ती लोकप्रियता, फेसबुक, ट्विटर के नए बनते समाज में साहित्य की क्या उपस्थिति होगी? उससे पुस्तकों का बाज़ार कितना प्रभावित होगा? स्वप्न और दुस्स्वप्न के बीच वह भविष्य कहीं झूल रहा है.
भारतीय अंग्रेजी लेखन और प्रकाशन पर इसका प्रभाव दिखने लगा है. पिछले २५-३० सालों में जिसकी साख अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर गंभीर लेखन से बनी हुई थी, वह अब ‘कॉमर्शियल फिक्शन’ की चकाचौंध में सिमटती जा रही है. चेतन भगत के उपन्यासों ने सफलता के नए मानक गढे, रवीन्द्र सिंह, अमीश त्रिपाठी जैसे लेखकों के उपन्यासों ने उस बाज़ार का विस्तार किया है. कुछ अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ब्रांड वाले प्रकाशकों ने तो ‘मेट्रो’ के पाठकों को ध्यान में रखकर अलग से सीरीज शुरु की है. यह नया दौर है. जो साहित्य की महानता का नहीं, उसकी लोकप्रियता का है. अंधाधुंध व्यवसाय का है. अंग्रेजी साहित्य की पुस्तकालयों पर, उसकी खरीद पर निर्भरता पूरी तरह समाप्त हो चुकी है. इस समय हिन्दुस्तान में अंग्रेजी के कम से कम दस ऐसे ‘लोकप्रिय’ लेखक हैं जिनकी किताबें १० लाख या उससे अधिक बिकती हैं. छोटे-छोटे कस्बों की छोटी-छोटी दुकानों में भी नए दौर के इन अंग्रेजी लेखकों की किताबें न सिर्फ दिखाई दे जाती हैं, बल्कि बिकती भी हैं. २१ वीं शताब्दी में पाठकों को जोड़ने के लिहाज़ से अंग्रेजी की दुनिया में क्रांतिकारी बदलाव हुए हैं. चेतन भगत जैसे लेखकों की किताबों ने उन पाठकों को भी अंग्रेजी से जोड़ने का काम किया है जो क्रयशक्ति होने के बावजूद पहले अंग्रेजी साहित्य से आतंकित रहता था. वह तबका भी चेतन भगत मार्का लेखकों की किताबें खरीद कर ड्राइंग रूम में सजा लेता है और इस बात का संतोष मनाता है कि वह भी अंग्रेजीदां तबके का हिस्सा बन गया है. कोई भविष्य को लेकर आशंकित हो रहा है, कोई आश्वस्त हो रहा है.
वैसे बदल तो हिंदी की पुस्तक संस्कृति भी रही है. यह ज़रूर है कि अंग्रेजी में यह सब बदलाव खूब हो–हल्ले के साथ हो रहा है हमारी हिंदी में उस भविष्य की तैयारी चुपचाप हो रही है. यह आश्चर्यजनक है कि हमारा ध्यान उस ओर नहीं जा रहा है. बरसों तक हिंदीवाले जिन जासूसी और लिजलिजे प्रेम के उपन्यासों और उनके लेखकों गुलशन नंदा, प्रेम वाजपेयी से लेकर वेद प्रकाश शर्मा, सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक तक को पानी पी-पी कर कोसते थे. उनको हिंदी में कुरुचि के प्रसार के लिए ज़िम्मेदार मानते थे, कुछेक अपवादों को छोड़ दें जासूसी-अपराध कथाओं की धारा अपने आखिरी दौर में है, सिमट चुकी है. गुलशन नंदा छाप प्रेम-कथाओं का तो पहले ही लोप हो चुका था. इस तथाकथित लोकप्रिय धारा का भी कायांतरण हो रहा है. वे भी भविष्य की लड़ाई लड़ रहे हैं. हिंदी में ‘लुगदी’ क्रांति को संभव बनाने वाले मेरठ के प्रकाशन या तो बंद हो चुके हैं या धीरे-धीरे वे उस ‘साहित्य’ से किनारा कर रहे हैं जिसकी बदौलत मेरठ के नाम की गूँज हिंदी पट्टी में सुनाई देती थी. ‘मशहूर’ लेखक वेद प्रकाश शर्मा के प्रकाशन तुलसी पॉकेट बुक्स ने इस साल हिटलर की आत्मकथा से लेकर गाँधी के ‘सत्य के प्रयोग’ जैसी किताबें छापी हैं और उनको रेलवे स्टेशनों के बुक स्टॉल्स तक पहुँचाया है. हिंदी के नए पाठकों की नब्ज़ पहचानने के क्रम में नए-नए प्रयोग किए जा रहे हैं.
हिंदी के प्रकाशकों ने पाठकों से जुड़ने की कोशिशें तेज कर दी हैं. आम तौर पर ‘बड़े-बड़े’ लेखकों को छोटे-छोटे पुस्तकालयों में खपा देने वाले प्रकाशकों ने भी बाज़ार की ओर देखना शुरु कर दिया है. इंटरनेट ने धीरे-धीरे बड़े पैमाने पर हिंदी-जगत को प्रभावित करना शुरु कर दिया है और आने वाले समय में उसकी भूमिका निर्णायक होने वाली है. हिंदी की समस्या यह नहीं रही है कि उसके पाठक कम हैं, उसमें लोकप्रिय होने का माद्दा नहीं है. हिंदी की सबसे बड़ी समस्या यह है कि उसके पास पुस्तकों के प्रसार का कोई नेटवर्क नहीं है. इंटरनेट धीरे-धीरे वह नेटवर्क खड़ा कर रहा है. आज ‘कविता कोश’ जैसे कई वेबसाइट्स हिंदी में हैं जिनको एक महीने में एक लाख से अधिक पाठक पढते हैं. हिंदी की लगभग सभी प्रमुख पत्रिकाएं इंटरनेट पर पढ़ने ले किए मुफ्त में मिल जाती हैं. अनेक ब्लॉग्स, वेबसाइट्स के माध्यम से साहित्य का प्रसार बड़े पैमाने पर बढ़ा है, साहित्यिक बहसें इनके माध्यम से ‘हम कौन थे, क्या हो गए’ से आगे बढ़ चुकी है.
२००२ में इंग्लैण्ड की ‘गार्डियन वीकली’ ने यह भविष्यवाणी की थी कि आने वाले दस सालों में हिंदी इंटरनेट की सबसे अधिक उपयोग की जाने वाली भाषा होगी. अभी तक वह भविष्यवाणी तो सच नहीं हो पाई है लेकिन लगता है आने वाले सालों में कम से कम हिंदी में इंटरनेट वैकल्पिक माध्यम नहीं रह जायेगा बल्कि मुख्य माध्यम बन जायेगा. हालाँकि अभी हिंदी पट्टी में इंटरनेट के उपयोगकर्ता बमुश्किल १० प्रतिशत हैं. छोटे शहरों में तो इससे जुड़ने वाले भले बढ़ रहे हैं लेकिन उपयोगकर्ता नहीं. इसके कई कारण हैं. लेकिन अब इंटरनेट से जुड़ना धीरे-धीरे सस्ता होता जा रहा है. ‘आकाश’ जैसे टैब के बाद वह और सरल हो जायेगा. वेद प्रकाश शर्मा जैसे लेखकों के हिंदी उपन्यास तो ई-बुक की शक्ल में बिकने लगे हैं लेकिन निकट भविष्य में हिंदी में अंग्रेजी की तरह ई-बुक क्रांति की कोई सम्भावना नहीं दिखाई देती है. हाँ, इतना पक्का है कि अंग्रेजी की तरह हिंदी में भी वेबसाइट्स के माध्यम से हिंदी किताबों की बिक्री बड़े पैमाने पर होने लगेगी. अपने देश के ऐसे सबसे बड़े साईट फ्लिपकार्ट.कॉम द्वारा बेचे जाने वाली कुल किताबों में हिंदी किताबों का प्रतिशत हर साल बढ़ता जा रहा है. हिंदी के अनेक प्रमुख प्रकाशकों ने किताबों के ऑनलाइन बिक्री की शुरुआत तो फिलहाल नहीं की है लेकिन किताबों के ऑनलाइन ऑर्डर लेने तो शुरु कर ही दिए हैं.
हिंदी में अनुवादों की बढ़ती मांग और पूर्ति को देखकर यह निष्कर्ष नहीं निकाल लेना चाहिए कि हिंदी में मौलिक लेखन की डिमांड कम हो गई है या अच्छा मौलिक लेखन कम हो रहा है. असल में यह भी पाठकों को हिंदी से जोड़ने की दिशा में बड़ा कदम है. हिंदी में अधिकतर अंग्रेजी या अन्य भाषाओं की चर्चित किताबें ही अनूदित होकर आती हैं. इससे प्रकाशकों को फायदा यह होता है कि अंग्रेजी के प्रचार-प्रसार का लाभ उनको हिंदी में मिल जाता है और पाठकों को चर्चित किताबें अपनी भाषा में पढ़ने के लिए मिल जाती हैं. किसी ज़माने में ‘घरेलू लाइब्रेरी योजना’ के माध्यम से पाठकों से सीधा रिश्ता बनाने वाले हिंद पॉकेट बुक्स इन दिनों चर्चित किताबों के फटाफट अनुवादों के माध्यम बाज़ार में अपनी धमक बनाये हुए है. अभी हाल में ही उसने स्टीव जॉब्स की जीवनी को अंग्रेजी में आने के महीने भर के भीतर ही हिंदी अनुवाद में प्रस्तुत कर दिया.
हिंदी पर अकादमिक जकड धीरे-धीरे कम होती जा रही है, वैचारिकता का आग्रम कम होता जा रहा है. साहित्यिक मेलों, आयोजनों में हिंदी का स्पेस बढ़ता जा रहा है, लेखक-पाठक संवाद बढ़ता जा रहा है. सबसे बढ़कर हिंदी लेखन में विविधता बढ़ रही है. मूलतः गल्पजीवी माना जाने वाला हिंदी समाज विविधवर्णी होता जा रहा है. पिछले कुछ सालों में हिंदी में ‘नॉन-फिक्शन’ अधिक पसंद किए गए हैं. हिंदी में भी किताबों का एक नया बाज़ार तैयार हो रहा है. वह दिन दूर नहीं जब हिंदी के लेखकों को भी ‘ब्रांड’ की तरह देखा जाने लगेगा. अभी तक हिंदी में पुस्तक व्यवसाय एक ऐसा व्यवसाय है जिसमें सबसे अधिक पूँजी लेखक की लगी होती है लेकिन उसे सबसे कम लाभ होता है. बाज़ार से हिंदी का लेखक चाहे जितना गुरेज़ कर ले उसकी असल मुक्ति बाज़ार में ही संभव है. नई-नई तकनीकों, नए-नए रूपों में एक ऐसा भविष्य तैयार हो रहा है जिसमें पाठक साहित्य के नियंता होंगे, बड़े-बड़े संस्थान और सत्ता प्रतिष्ठान नहीं.
