सब कुछ किसी ऐसी सस्पेंस-थ्रिलर फिल्म की पटकथा की तरह था जिसका क्लाइमेक्स जैसे पहले ही लिखा जा चुका था. भारतीय अंग्रेजी साहित्य के सबसे विवादित और चर्चित ‘ब्रांड’ सलमान रुश्दी के जयपुर लिटरेचर फेस्टिवल में नहीं आने का अंदेशा कुछ-कुछ मीडिया वालों को भी उसी दिन से था जिस दिन यह बात खुली थी कि इसमें इस बार सलमान रुश्दी शामिल होने वाले हैं. लेकिन मीडिया भी इस खबर को पहले अंतिम समय तक भुनाती रही. जब इन दिनों भक्ति के सबसे बड़े व्याख्याकार के रूप में प्रचारित, कबीर के सबसे बड़े आलोचक के रूप में प्रचारित किए जा रहे पुरुषोत्तम अग्रवाल एनडीटीवी के राजन महान से भक्ति और सहिष्णुता की परंपरा और सलमान रुश्दी के न आने के सवालों के जवाब देते हुए बोल रहे थे तो कुछ-कुछ यह स्पष्ट होने लगा था कि यह सब कुछ जयपुर फेस्टिवल की थीम भक्ति को उभारने के लिए था, खुद इस बार ‘स्टार विहीन’ हो रहे इस आंदोलन को पब्लिसिटी दिलाने का स्टंट मात्र था. तीन-चार दिनों तक लेखकों-चिंतकों ने धर्मनिरपेक्षता की दुकान खूब चमकाई. मुझे सबसे अधिक हँसी अपने हिंदी के उन मूर्धन्य लेखकों पर आई जो अपने किसी जनकवि की मृत्यु की अपने कॉलम में सुध भी नहीं लेते, किसी अभावग्रस्त या बीमार लेखक के समर्थन में अपनी सत्ता के बल पर कोई पहल भी नहीं करते वे सलमान रुश्दी के समर्थन में इस तरह ध्वजा उठाये रहे जैसे उनकी आवाज़ कोई सुनता भी हो. सच यह है कि हिंदी के ये तमाम सत्ताधारी लेखक अपनी विश्वसनीयता खो चुके हैं. शायद इसीलिए ऐसे मौकों पर वे अधिक कूद-फांद मचाते हैं ताकि उनकी विश्वसनीयता वापस कायम हो सके. हमारे हिंदी वाले भूल गए कि यह वही सलमान रुश्दी है जिसने एक बार हमारे सबसे बड़े लेखक प्रेमचंद को मामूली किस्सागो बताया था.
वास्तव में शगुफेबाजी, सनसनी फैलाना सलमान के लेखकीय व्यक्तित्व का हिस्सा रहा है. इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि midnight’s children लिखकर सलमान रुश्दी ने भारतीय अंग्रेजी साहित्य के परिदृश्य को रूपांतरित कर दिया. लेकिन क्या ‘सैटेनिक वर्सेस’ उनकी श्रेष्ठ कृति है? क्या लेखकीय स्वतंत्रता के अंतर्गत किसी की भावनाओं को आहत करना आता है? क्या लेखक की ज़िम्मेदारी केवल बाज़ार के प्रति होती है समाज के प्रति उसका कोई दायित्व नहीं बनता? क्या लेखक की स्वतंत्रता का सम्मान केवल समाज का ही दायित्व है? अनेक सवाल एक बार फिर उभर कर आये. सलमान रुश्दी दुर्भाग्य से पिछले करीब १० सालों से अपने लेखन नहीं, विवादों के कारण चर्चा में रहे हैं. जबसे वे अमेरिका में जाकर बसे हैं उन्होंने वहां कि संस्कृति भी अपना ली है. उनको अधिक चर्चा अपनी प्रेमिकाओं के कारण मिली है न कि लेखन के कारण.
जयपुर लिटरेचर फेस्टिवल ने अपनी पब्लिसिटी के लिए सलमान रुश्दी की इसी विवादित लोकप्रियता का खूब फायदा उठाया. हर बार इस महोत्सव में फ़िल्मी सितारे, नोबेल विजेता आते थे, जिनके आकर्षण में दर्शक-श्रोता आते थे. इस बार महोत्सव में कोई स्टार नहीं है, न फ़िल्मी न इल्मी. लेकिन पब्लिसिटी सबसे अधिक मिली. शायद इसी पब्लिसिटी के बल पर संजय राय ने कहा कि इस दफा १२ हज़ार लोगों के रोज आने की सम्भावना है. साहित्य को लेकर एक सफल मेला हो यह अच्छी बात है, लेकिन साहित्यिक आयोजनों की अपनी एक गरिमा होती है, होनी चाहिए. लेकिन यह कड़वी सच्चाई है है कि आज भारतीय अंग्रेजी साहित्य बाज़ार के बहुत बड़ा प्रोडक्ट बन चुका है. और बाजार में तमाशा होता है, लटके झटके होते हैं.
जयपुर फेस्टिवल दुर्भाग्य से एक बाजारू तमाशा बनता जा रहा है और सलमान रुश्दी का आना न आना उसके पब्लिसिटी स्टंट का हिस्सा भर लगता है.
