विनोद खेतान की किताब ‘उम्र से लंबी सड़कों पर’ की समीक्षा कुछ दिनों पहले प्रियदर्शन ने लिखी थी, जिसके बहाने उन्होंने गुलजार का गीतकार के रूप में एक मूल्यांकन भी करने की कोशिश की थी. उसका एक प्रतिवाद कल ‘जनसत्ता’ में निर्मला गर्ग का छपा था. यह प्रियदर्शन का जवाब है- जानकी पुल.

निर्मला जी इस क़दर आगबबूला और झागबबूला क्यों हैं, मेरी समझ में नहीं आया। पहली पंक्ति में उन्होंने मुझे गैर इमानदार (ईमानदार) ठहरा दिया, दूसरी पंक्ति में शब्दों का खेल करने वाला और अगली तीन पंक्तियों तक पहुंचते-पहुंचते मेरे दिमाग में बैठे हिंदुत्ववादी राष्ट्रवाद की पहचान कर ली जो मौका पाकर हिंदी साहित्य में विषाणु फैला रहा है।
ऐसी भाषा में संवाद नहीं, झगड़ा होता है। वह निर्मला जी की वरिष्ठता का सम्मान करते हुए मैं करना नहीं चाहता। बहरहाल, इसी वरिष्ठता का तक़ाज़ा है कि मैं उनके एतराज़ों को समझने और उनके जवाब देने की कोशिश करूं।
गुलज़ार तुलसी, कबीर या निराला नहीं हैं, न ही विनोद खेतान रामचंद्र शुक्ल, हज़ारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी या रामविलास शर्मा हैं। मेरे क्या, किसी के साबित करने से वे नहीं होंगे। इन कवियों और आलोचकों के उल्लेख से मेरी मुराद बस इतनी थी कि लेखक और आलोचक के बीच का सख्य भाव कई बार रचना की तहों को बाहर लाने में मददगार होता है। यह बात मैंने लिखी भी है।
फ़ैज़ अहमद फ़ैज़ मेरे भी प्रिय कवियों में हैं। जो पंक्तियां आपने उद्धृत की हैं फ़ैज़ की उनसे बेहतर और मानीख़ेज़ पंक्तियां मुझे याद हैं। लेकिन टैगोर के साथ बिठाना हो तो मैं ग़ालिब को बिठाऊंगा, फ़ैज़ को नहीं। ग़ालिब के बाद चुनने की नौबत आएगी तो अलह-अलग वजहों से मीर और इक़बाल को चुनूंगा फ़ैज़ को नहीं। इसके बाद भी चुनना होगा तो फ़िराक़ को चुनूंगा, फ़ैज़ को नहीं।
दरअसल फ़ैज़ और गुलज़ार की तुलना का आधार वही लोकप्रियता है जो दोनों को अपने-अपने ढंग से नसीब हुई। नूरजहां, मेहदी हसन और इक़बाल बानो से लेकर नायरा नूर और आबिदा परवीन तक ने फ़ैज़ को गाया और कुछ सामान्य नज़्मों को भी यादगार अनुभव में बदल डाला। निश्चय ही फ़ैज इस शोहरत की वजह से नहीं, उस प्रगतिशील और जुझारू विरासत की वजह से बड़े हैं। वैसे इस विरासत को भी भावुक ढंग से देखने की जगह ठोस ऐतिहासिक स्थितियों के बीच देखें तो कुछ और भी दिखेगा। बेशक, फ़ैज़ जेल भी गए और उन्होंने निर्वासन भी झेले, लेकिन इसका वास्ता जम्हूरी आंदोलनों से नहीं, पाकिस्तान की सत्ता और फौजी प्रतिष्ठान के साथ उनकी क़रीबी से ज़्यादा था। पाकिस्तान के पहले प्रधानमंत्री लियाक़त अली खान के ख़िलाफ़ फौजी बगावत की साज़िश के आरोप में उन्हें जेल काटनी पड़ी। बाद में वे ज़ुल्फ़िकार अली भुट्टो के बहुत क़रीब रहे जिन्होंने याहिया ख़ान के साथ मिलकर पूर्वी पाकिस्तान को उसका लोकतांत्रिक हक़ नहीं दिया था। यही नहीं, जब भारत को हराने के लिए भुट्टो घास खाकर ऐटम बम बनाने की बात कर रहे थे तो फ़ैज़ दो बरस उनकी सरकार में मंत्री भी रहे थे। वे कम्युनिस्ट रहे, लेकिन कार्ड होल्डर कम्युनिस्ट बनने की नादानी से दूर रहे।
इन सब बातों को लिखने का मतलब फ़ैज़ का क़द छोटा करना नहीं है। क्योंकि इन सबके बावजूद फ़ैज़ की रचनाशीलता की तरक़्क़ीपसंद और जुझारू विरासत कहीं ज़्यादा बड़ी है जो हमारे लिए रोशनी का काम करती है। उनकी कई नज़्में और ग़ज़लें बराबरी और आज़ादी की जलती हुई मशाल लगती हैं। लेकिन फ़ैज़ नागार्जुन नहीं है जो सत्ता केंद्रों से दूर अपनी फ़कीरी फक्कड़ता के साथ समय और समाज की बेहद ठोस, संवेदनशील और वास्तविक पडताल करते रहे और बताते रहे कि ‘चाहे दक्षिण चाहे वाम, जनता को रोटी से काम।‘ अगर क्रांतिकारी लगने वाली पंक्तियों की ही प्रतियोगिता हो तो दुष्यंत कुमार भी निर्मला गर्ग के पाब्लो नेरुदा, यानी फ़ैज़ पर भारी पड़ेंगे।
जहां तक गुलज़ार का सवाल है, मैंने इस बात को बहुत साफ़ ढंग से रेखांकित किया है कि वे मूलतः रोमानी शायर हैं जिन्हें बाज़ार ने बनाया है- इस बाज़ार से उनकी परवाज़ भी बनती है और उसकी हद भी। उनकी अमृता प्रीतम से तुलना का आधार भी यही रूमानियत है। कहने की ज़रूरत नहीं कि शोहरत कवि के बड़े या छोटे होने का प्रमाण नहीं होती। इसलिए गुलज़ार मेरी निगाह में हिंदी के श्रेष्ठ कवियों के आगे कमतर ठहरते हैं।
लेकिन मेरी यह भी बहुत साफ़ राय है कि फ़ैज ही नहीं, कई दूसरे लोकप्रिय उर्दू शायर भी ‘ओवर रेटेड’ हैं- वे कैफ़ी आज़मी भी, जिनका निर्मला गर्ग ने उल्लेख किया है। अगर राष्ट्रवादी भावुकता से अलग होकर देखें तो उनका मशहूर गीत ‘कर चले हम फिदा जानो तन साथियो’ अंततः एक युद्धवादी गीत है। यही नहीं, मेरी टिप्पणी में हिंदुत्ववादी राष्ट्रवाद खोज निकालने वाली निर्मला जी पता नहीं, क़ैफ़ी आज़मी की इन पंक्तियों को किस तरह देखती हैं- ‘ खींच दो अपने खूं से ज़मीं पर लकीर/ इस तरफ़ आने पाए न रावन कोई / तोड़ दो हाथ अगर हाथ उठने लगे / छूने पाए न सीता का दामन कोई/ राम भी तुम तुम्हीं लछमन साथियो।‘ बहरहाल, फिर दुहराता हूं कि इन सबके बावजूद क़ैफ़ी आजमी ‘दूसरा वनवास’ और ‘औरत; जैसी रचनाओं के लिए देर तक याद रखे जाएंगे। लेकिन रघुवीर सहाय की वास्तविक औरतों और आलोकधन्वा की भागी हुई लड़कियों के मुकाबले या अयोध्या पर हिंदी की कुछ बेहतरीन कविताओं के मुक़ाबले ये रचनाएं कहां ठहरती हैं?
मेरी टिप्पणी गुलज़ार पर केंद्रित एक किताब पर है, गुलज़ार की पूरी शख्सियत पर नहीं। इसलिए उनकी अपगतिविधियों की कैफ़ियत देने में मेरी दिलचस्पी नहीं। लेकिन अगर अपने गीत में ग़ालिब की एक पंक्ति का इस्तेमाल चोरी है तो यह तर्क कई कवियों पर भारी पड़ेगा। इन दिनों भारत भूषण अग्रवाल स्मृति पुरस्कार प्राप्त कवि कुमार अनुपम की रचनाओं पर चल रही बहस से निर्मला गर्ग परिचित होंगी।
बहरहाल, मेरी कोशिश पाठ को स्वायत्त ढंग से देखने की भी होती है जिससे रचना के प्रति हमारी अपनी समझ कुछ ज़्यादा साफ हो सके। इसलिए पूरी टिप्पणी के बीच मैंने यह लिखा कि गुलज़ार में जो गहराई और विस्तार है, वह फ़ैज़ में नहीं दिखता। मैं इस टिप्पणी पर अब भी कायम हूं- यह मानते हुए कि अपनी प्रतिबद्धता और वैचारिकता की वजह से फ़ैज़ गुलज़ार से बडे साबित होते हैं।
रहा हिंदूवादी विषाणुओं का प्रश्न, तो वे मेरी टिप्पणी में हैं या निर्मला जी के मस्तिष्क में- यह अब तक मेरे लिए गुत्थी है। इस गुत्थी के बीच उनके पाब्लो नेरुदा का एक शेर उनको नज़र करता हूं- ‘वो बात सारे फ़साने में जिसका ज़िक्र न था / वो बात उनको बहुत नागवार गुज़री है।
