आज से करीब ढाई हज़ार साल पहले सुकरात ने लिखने के बारे में कहा था – “यह स्मृति का नाश करती है, मस्तिष्क को कमजोर करती है… यह अमानवीय है।” बात तब कि है जब ग्रीस में लोग मिस्र से लिपि सीख कर ज्ञान को लिपिबद्ध कर रहे थे। इसी बात का एक पहलू यह भी है, सुकरात का मानना था कि ज्ञान का संचार वाणी से होना चाहिए। शायद उनको डर था कि लोग लिखे को सही न समझ पायें। सुकरात, वह महान दार्शनिक थे जिन्होंने डेल्फी की भविष्यवक्ता द्वारा सर्वश्रेष्ठ ज्ञानी घोषित किये जाने पर कहा था कि उन्हें बस इतना मालूम है कि उन्हें कुछ मालूम नहीं।
बहुत से लोगों को यह बात बिच्छू के डंक की तरह लगेगी जब उन्हें मालूम होगा कि संस्कृत वैदिक काल तक लिखी नहीं जाती थी। ब्राह्मी, नागरी लिपि जब देवनागरी में परिवर्तित हुई , तब जा कर संस्कृत का वर्तमान स्वरुप आया।
