वि-रक्त
वह और उसकी शिकायत मेरे साथ रहती थी.
वह कहता तुम चित्र में अमूर्त क्यों रचते हो ?
मैं कहता, तुम्हारी तरह मेरी भी देह में दिलचस्पी नहीं.
देखो उस सपाट परछाई को,
तुम्हारी है, तुम्हारे जैसी नहीं,
प्रत्यक्ष-आभास, प्रत्यर्थी-प्रतीक.
तुम सतह से अपनी परछाई को अविष्कृत करते हो,
मैं अपनी परछाई से सतह को.
सतहें नक़ल को जगह नहीं देतीं.
निष्पत्त सतह निरपेक्ष (कि) विवेचना है.
वह यह जानता था, मानता नहीं.
वह न होता तो
मैं यह मान तो लेता, जानता नहीं.
मेरे पास कोई विकल्प नहीं है, उसका कोई विकल्प नहीं था.
मुझे उसकी तारीफ़ करने में तकलीफ़ होती है और उसकी बुराई में मैं उसे बख्शना नहीं चाहता. उसकी अपनी विशिष्टताओं के कारण तारीफ़ हो या बुराई, विशेष हो जाती हैं. वह अपनी आलोचना को आलोक में और सराहना को सार में बदलना जानता है. उसकी चुनिंदा, अचरजकारी दुर्लभ विशेषताओं से मुझे डर लगा रहता है कि वह मेरी औसत सामान्यता और निरी साधारणता को अपने सन्दर्भ में उपयोग कर उन्हे विशेष भी कर सकता है और विषम भी.
अगर मैं उस पर पत्थर दागूँ तो पहले वह उसे तराश कर कोई मूर्ति बना सकता है फिर स्वयं ही उसे अपनी देह पर मार सकता है. वह तीक्ष्ण को सूक्ष्म कर तराश सकता है. वह दूसरों का तमाचा छीन कर उसे अपने गाल पर खुद जड़ सकता है लेकिन किसी और से स्वयं का छूआ जाना किन्ही भी हालात में उसे मंज़ूर नहीं. उसका देह–संदेह अजब था. मुझे याद है जब एक बार मैंने सहारे के लिए उसे छुआ ही था कि बड़ी बेरहमी से उसने मुझे झटकार दिया था. उसके बाद मैंने कभी भी उसे छूने की ज़ुर्रत नहीं की. जब भी उसे सरदर्द होता तो मैं उसके ही कहने पर उस का तकिया मरोड़ दिया करता. इस तरह उसका दर्द-निवारण हो जाता था.
आखिर उसे कह क्या सकते हैं ?
वह था.
वह असामान्य प्रवृत्तियों का अति सामान्य सा दिखने वाला असाधारण मनुष्य था. अपने साधारण नैन–नक्श और बौनी व ठगी-सी कद–काठी के कारण स्वयं ही मन में उसने कई हीन विचार पाल रखे थे. इस हीनता से निजात पाने की हवस में उसका अधिकांश समय अपनी देह के अतिरेक को संशय के अतिशय में ढालने की सफल और विफल कोशिशों में बीतता था.
उसकी हवस का मंतव्य हीनता का ह्रास था.
वह देह से मुक्ति चाहता था, मृत्यु नहीं.
लालसा और अनासक्ति के तनाव के बीच अपनी देह में वह सुगबुगाता रहता था. वह दुर्लभ इच्छा शक्ति से अपनी इस दरिद्र देह को न चाहते हुए भी अनमने ढंगों से उसे ढोने के उपक्रम करता रहता. उसे याद करते यही छवि मन में आती है कि जैसे कोई सशक्त और बुद्धिमान परछाई अपने कंधों पर लाचार देह को उठाये रोज़ कहीं लेकर जा रही हो या उसे कहीं से ला रही हो. उसकी देह को देख कर उसके विषाद का अंदाजा लगाया जा सकता था लेकिन उसकी परछाई उन विषादों से मुक्त थी.
वह परछाई होना चाहता था.
देह-विषाद मुक्त, स्वतंत्र परछाई. वह जानता था कि मृत्यु का अर्थ परछाई से मुक्ति है और परछाई की मुक्ति भी है, कि मृत्यु उपरांत परछाई के अर्थ बदल जाते हैं. वह तो जीते जी अपनी परछाई का नया अर्थ गढ़ना चाहता था. वह अक्सर पूछता कि जब परछाई स्वयं की है तो उसमे ‘पर‘ क्यों है ? उसे स्वछाई क्यों नहीं कहते?
अपनी देह से उसका सम्बन्ध योगिक नहीं था. उसके लिए देह किसी साधना कि माध्यम के विपरीत कई प्रसाधनों कि संयोग थी. उसकी नज़र में उसकी देह बदसूरत, धड़कती सतह मात्र थी. अपनी देह के प्रति इस विरति और वितृष्णा के कारण किसी अन्य देह से उसका सघन सम्बन्ध कभी नहीं बन सका.
वह बदसूरत सतह के धड़कते परिणाम के रूप में जीता था.
अक्सर वह अपनी परछाई से संवादरत रहता कि तुम ही हो जिसका न अपना कोई दर्द है और न ही कोई आकार. देह का गतिशील, सपाट धब्बा. वह दर्द और आकार के आपसी सम्बन्ध को समझ चुका था. देह में धड़कन है, फिर बदसूरत क्यों है ? वह सतह नहीं बल्कि उसका सपाट धब्बा होना चाहता था. जब देह का श्रृंगार होता है तो परछाई खुद-ब-खुद परिष्कृत होती चलती है. वह सोचता कि ऐसे सतही दोहन से तो यह सपाट परिष्कार बेहतर.
उसके देह-संदेह का आलम यह था कि उसकी सुबह आधी रात से ही शुरू हो जाती थी. रोज़ आधी रात में बड़ी तत्परता से वह अपना श्रृंगार करना शुरू कर दिया करता था. उसके पास तरह-तरह के रंग-बिरंगे कांटेक्ट लेंसों का विशेष संग्रह था जिनका अपने कपड़ों की मैचिंग के अनुसार वह उपयोग किया करता था. तैयार हो कर सुबह जब वह अपने घर से बाहर चहलकदमी के लिए निकलता तो अनजान लोगों की घूरती नज़रें उसे बड़ी भातीं. हर रोज़ उसका नए-नए और अजब तरीकों से तैयार होना उसके पड़ोसियों व अन्य बाहरी लोगों के लिए अचरज और चर्चा का विषय था. उसे लोगों की जिज्ञासा भरी निगाहों को चीरते हुए अपनी पगडंडी बनाते चलने में अब महारत हासिल हो गयी थी.
उसकी आँखें छोटी व धंसी हुई थीं. वह कहता, मेरी आखें भीतर कुछ यूँ धंसी हैं कि जैसे वे मेरे चेहरे पर नहीं, मेरे दिमाग़ पर जड़ी हैं. अपनी दिमागी दखलंदाजी के कारण वह सिर्फ दृश्य की पहेलियाँ देखता-बूझता था. वह अपनी छोटी व स्वस्थ आँखों पर मोटा सा चश्मा इसलिए चढ़ाये रहता कि उनसे ठीक व साफ़ देख सकने के विपरीत उनमे फंसी अपनी फटी आँखों के धुंधलके से देख सके. यूँ सड़क पर लड़खड़ाते चलते उसकी नज़र किसी पर भी टिक नहीं सकती थी. वह पीता नहीं था, सिर्फ लड़खड़ाता था.
कभी-कभी उसका श्रृंगार इस तरह भी होता कि इर्द–गिर्द लगे पेड़ों की छाँव में वह बिला जाता तो कभी तेज़ धूप की चकाचौंध में घुल जाता कि सिर्फ सड़क पर पड़ती उसकी परछाई से ही उसके वहाँ होने का गुमान होता था. वह अदृश्य नहीं था, फिर भी कई बार सड़क पर चहलकदमी करते लोग या तो उससे टकरा चुके थे या फिर उसकी परछाई को देख एन वक़्त पर उससे टकराने से बच भी चुके थे. दोपहर की धूप में दूर से देखने पर कई बार सड़क पर जैसे सिर्फ एक परछाई की चहलकदमी का भी अहसास होता था. इस तरह अपने मेकअप के अद्भुत कौशल से गिरगिट की भांति नेपथ्य में विलीन हो दृश्य में अपनी परछाई संग टहलता था. उसकी नज़र में तैयार होना अपने कौशल से प्रदत्त को छिपाना था.
उसके सन्दर्भ में श्रृंगार का अर्थ हम वैसा नहीं लगा सकते जैसा किसी स्त्री के सन्दर्भ में होता है. उसके यहाँ तो श्रृंगार का अर्थ अपने सतह के संदेह को ढांपने से है. स्त्री दिखने के लिए श्रृंगार करती है और वह छिपने के लिए. स्त्री देखे जाने पर प्रसन्न होती है और वह अपने छुपे रह जाने में खुश होता है. वह श्रृंगार से अपना भेस धरता है और एक स्त्री अपना भेद भरती है.
वह तो लोगों की अनिमेष दृष्टी का भूखा था. उसे स्वयं पर लोगों का विस्मय बड़ा भाता था. उसे इस बात से बड़ी राहत मिलती कि कोई भी उसकी आभ्यंतरिकता की टोह नहीं ले सकता. उसका श्रृंगार लोगों की नज़रों और उसके बीच एक दीवार जैसा था. घर के बाहर उसकी देह अपने संवरण में रहती थी और घर के भीतर वह अपनी देह के मंडन में रहता था.
वह प्रेम में खुद के छुए जाने के खिलाफ था.
प्रेम की ऊष्मा में वह मोम की तरह पिघलता था. नज़दीक से अपनी देह के देखे जाने के विचार से पहले वह बर्फ की तरह सुन्न, फिर पथरीला और अंततः पसीज जाता था. अपने प्रणय अनुषंग में वह अपने आंगिक उत्ताप व उद्वेलनों को पहले संयमित और फिर स्थिर करना जानता था. उसे किसी दूसरे के द्वारा स्पर्श किये जाने पर सख्त ऐतराज़ होता. दूसरों को छूने में उसे कोई मुश्किल नहीं होती बशर्ते वह दूसरा उसके मेकअप से नीचे उसकी धड़कती सतह में झाँकने का प्रयत्न न करें.
उसके प्रेम एक तरफ़ा ही होते और उसके प्रणय-प्रसंग अमावस्या से भरे अपने अंधेरों और अवसादों से घिरे होते. इन प्रणय–प्रसंगों की अंतरंगता में वह देह से नहीं बल्कि अपनी परछाई से भागीदारी करता जिसका उसकी प्रेमिकाओं को कभी कोई भान नहीं हो सका. यह तो सिर्फ वही जानता था कि स्वयं की देह से बचने और उन प्रेमिकाओं को उस देह से बचाने के लिए अपनी परछाई को ही दाँव पर लगाना होगा.
वह यह बखूबी जानता था कि अंतरंगता के क्षणों में देह में देह तो आंशिक रूप से ही पैंठ सकती है लेकिन परछाई तो सतह के रेशे–रेशे में पैंठ जाती है. अपनी प्रेमिकाओं की देह उसकी नज़र में एक सतह ही थी. अपनी परछाई के सहारे अंतरंगता के क्षणों में वह उनकी सतह पर टहलता था. उसकी तृप्त प्रेमिकाएं संतुष्टि कि विचित्र हैरत में रहतीं थी. मनुष्य योनी में जन्म के पूर्व वे और कितनी योनियों से गुजरी थीं अपनी देह में उन खँडहर योनियों की उपस्थिति का कोई भान अन्यथा उन्हें नहीं था. वह जानता था कि देह से तो वह सिर्फ अपनी प्रेमिकाओं के वर्तमान को ही निथार सकता है लेकिन अपनी परछाई से वह उनके सकल अस्तित्व के खंडहरों के कोने–कोने में बिसर सकता है. अपनी परछाई से वह प्रेमिकाओं की उन बीती और भूलीं सतहों को अविष्कृत करता था.
वह विचित्र संसर्गी था.
खूबसूरत और समझदार स्त्रियों को अपने वश में करने में खासी दिलचस्पी रखता था. उसकी नज़र में खूबसूरत स्त्री का अर्थ जिस्मानी नहीं था. उसकी फेहरिस्त में चित्रकार, नर्तकी, फोटोग्राफर, इतिहासकार, कवियत्री आदि तमाम संवेदनशील स्त्रियाँ थीं. एक गायिका के प्रसंग में आकर वह गाने लगा था. उसने अलग-अलग वर्गों की धनाढ्य स्त्रियों के सहयोग व संसर्ग से अभिजात्य पा लिया था.
उसका भाषा ज्ञान उसके रहस्य को पैना व रोचक कर देता था. वह देसी-विदेशी कई भाषाओँ का ज्ञानी था, कहीं भी, किसी से भी उनकी ही बोली या भाषा में बात कर अपनी जगह बना लेता. भाषा के सहारे किसी से भी अपना एक विशेष सम्बन्ध बनाने में उसकी महारत थी. अपनी भाषाई करामात से ही वह एक फ्रांसिसी मूल की खूबसूरत और प्रसिद्द नर्तकी का ख़ास बनकर एक जानामाना नर्तक भी बन बैठा था. अपनी अनूठी व करिश्माई शक्तियों के चलते उसका नृत्य भी असाधारण था. अपनी इसी भाषाई चतुराई के चलते एक जर्मन मूल की जानीमानी चित्रकार को अपने चंगुल में कर प्रतिष्ठित चित्रकार भी बन गया था.
वह घुमक्कड़ तो था ही, जहाँ भी जाता, वहां रमता. मुझे याद है, कभी वह हिमालय का किस्सा सुनाता तो कभी वेनिस का, कभी अपनी अफ्रीका की आदिवासी मसाई प्रेमिका का बखान करता तो कभी फ्रांस के उस धनाढ्य कला प्रेमी की चर्चा करता जिसकी पत्नी के साथ उसके अन्तरंग सम्बन्ध थे. उसके पास किस्सों की कमी नहीं थी और सुनाता भी बड़े ही रोचक ढंग से था. एक बार वह अपनी इसी रोचकता के बारे में बता रहा था कि किस तरह मेक्सिको में उसकी मुलाकात एक लेखिका से हुई जिसमें किस्सागोई कि विशेष प्रतिभा थी, वह उसकी इस प्रतिभा का कायल हो चला था. उसने मुझे बताया था कि उसी रात अपनी पहली मुलाक़ात के शुरूआती क्षणों में ही यह तय कर लिया था कि यह प्रतिभा उसमे भी होनी ही चाहिए. उसमें किस्सागोई की रोचकता इसी स्त्री के संसर्ग से आई थी.
वह अतुलनीय पाठक था.
कहते हैं कि किताब छूते ही उसमे उतर जाती थीं. यूँ वह हर रोज़ कई किताबें जज़्ब करता रहता. उसका सिर्फ एक ही प्रयत्न रहता कि उसके पास दुनिया भर के तमाम विषयों पर जानकारी होनी चाहिए. किसी अच्छे राजनीतिज्ञ, लेखक,चित्रकार, संगीतकार या विचारक के निधन पर उसे दुःख होता कि किस तरह दिवंगत की देह के साथ उनका वह ज्ञान भी उनके साथ बिला जाता है जिसे पाने में पूरा जीवन लगता है. उसके अनुसार देह की अंत्येष्टि का अर्थ उस लाइब्रेरी के अंत से भी है जिसके आभ्यंतर से उनका मानस बना था. वह हर समय इसी उहापोह में रहता था की किस तरह उसके पास भी समस्त विधाओं का ज्ञान आ सके. वह संज्ञान और सूचना के भेद में नहीं पड़ता था. उसे तो बस यही जिद रहती कि पूरी प्रमाणिकता के साथ उसके पास हर विषय पर अभिव्यक्ति की शक्ति हो.
वह दुनिया के हर मंच पर होना चाहता था.
कंप्यूटर के प्रति उसमे विशेष रूचि थी.
मनुष्यों में नैनो कंप्यूटर को निरोपित किया जा सकने की संभावनाओं व अन्य तकनीकी ख़बरों पर वह पैनी नज़र रखता. एक सुबह के अखबार में इस अविष्कार की पुष्टि से तो वह ख़ुशी से नाच उठा था कि अब ज्ञान के संबल के लिए प्रेम के छल से नहीं गुज़रना होगा. वह अपने नैतिक पतन और अपनी नक़ाबी पात्रता से तंग आ गया था. आखिर उसके प्रेम प्रसंगों की रीड इसी वजह में छिपी थी, उसके प्रेम-प्रसंग ज्ञान को पाने के कपट–नाटक ही थे जिनसे उसने अलग-अलग विधाओं में निष्णात स्त्रियों से प्रेम कर अपनी वक्रताओं से उन विधाओं में थोड़ी गति बना ही ली थी.
इस कंप्यूटर से लैस होते ही सूक्ष्म पढने-लिखने-सुनने-तराशने की उसकी मौलिक फ़ैयाज़ी करामातें ख़त्म हो गयीं थीं. उसकी मानुष्यिक ग्राह्यता को तकनीकी गहनता ने लील लिया था. अब वह किसी भी अवसर पर बोलने से नहीं चूकता. विषय कुछ भी हो वह पूरी जानकारी अपने अंतस में डाउनलोड कर इस तरह पढ़ता कि लोगों को उसके विषय-अधिकार पर हैरत होती. वह चाहता भी यही था. हाँ, कई बार गड़बड़ जब होती थी, जब वह इन जानकारियों के संग उनका लिंक भी अपने उच्चार में ले आता. लोग फिर भी उसे हैरत से देखते-सुनते. उसे स्वयं पर लोगों का विस्मय बड़ा भाता.
उसे खून की बीमारी है और नाखून की बीमारी थी.
मुझे वे दर्दीले मंज़र याद हैं जब उसके नाखूनों में एक ऐसी रहस्यमयी बीमारी हो गयी थी कि रात में उन से रक्त के थक्के और सुबह कील के टुकड़े निकलते थे. इस बीमारी की तह तक कोई डॉक्टर, हकीम या तांत्रिक कभी नहीं पहुँच सका. अपनी इस बीमारी के उपचार के लिए उसने दर-दर कि ठोकरें खायीं थीं. एक रात, न रहेगा बांस न बजेगी बांसुरी की तर्ज़ पर नाखूनों को चिमटी से खींच अपनी उँगलियों से ही अलग कर उसने उन नाखूनों और उनकी विचित्र बिमारी से छुटकारा पा लिया था. मुझे शक है कि इसी तरह वह अपनी खून की बिमारी का भी इलाज कर रहा है. संभवतः वह स्वयं से बीमारी के बजाय खून हटाने की कोशिश कर रहा
