मुझे खाने , पीने का देखना था, अर्द्ध-ईश्वर को देखना था स्कैनिंग , खोज, टिप्पण : वैराग्य , सुरक्षा, उसकी मुखाकृति के महान गुरुत्वाकर्षण ; उसकी सरल ईमानदारी, जिससे वह ओतप्रोत था, उसकी महानता की मधुर बेसुधी — उसको निहारने वाली सैकड़ों आँखों की बेसुधी, लोगों की छाती से निकलने वाली और उसकी तरफ प्रवाहित होने वाली गहरी, प्रेमपूर्ण औए ईमानदार पूजा की बेसुधी को देखना था .
मेरी बाईं तरफ वाला पादरी मेरा पुराना परिचित था – लेकिन अब पादरी है, जिसने अपने जीवन का पहला आधा भाग शिविर और खेतों में एवं वूलविच में सैनिक स्कूल में प्रशिक्षक के रूप में – बिताया. उसी क्षण जब मैं इस बारे में बात कर रहा था , एक छिपी और विलक्षण रौशनी उसकी आँखों में चमकी और वह नीचे झुका और मुझे धीरे से रहस्य बताया – इशारे से रात्रि भोज के नायक की ओर संकेत करते हुए ,—गुप्त रूप से – उसकी महिमा एक संयोग है —मात्र अविश्वसनीय भाग्य का एक फल .
यह फैसला मेरे लिए एक महान आश्चर्य था . यदि नेपोलियन , या सुकरात , या सोलोमन इसके विषय होते , तो मुझे अधिक आश्चर्य नहीं होता.

सोचो मैंने क्या किया –मैं जो विश्राम और निष्क्रियता से इतना प्यार करता हूँ. मैंने स्वयं से कहा , इसके लिए मैं देश के प्रति ज़िम्मेदार हूँ और मुझे उसके साथ जाना चाहिए और जहाँ तक कर सकता हूँ, मुझे देश की रक्षा करनी चाहिए. इसलिए मैंने अपनी थोड़ी सी जमा पूंजी साथ ली, जिसे मैंने कार्य एवं कष्टकर अर्थव्यवस्था के वर्षों में बचाया था और एक सांस के साथ चला गया और उसकी रेजिमेंट में एक तुरही खरीदी और हम दूर खेतों में चले गए.
