”मन को प्रकाश और छाया के उन आकारों की तरह होने दो जो धूप के वृक्षों से छन कर आने से स्वाभाविक रूप से बन जाते हैं। आकाश में प्रकाश, वृक्षों के नीचे छाया और धरती पर आकार! यदि सौभाग्य से पानी की बौछार हो जाए तो इंद्रधनुष की मरीचिका भी। मनुष्य का जीवन इसी धूप के समान होना चाहिए। मात्र एक बोध – मात्र एक विशुद्ध आश्चर्य – निश्चल–निश्चलता में तिरते हुए, और जैसे कोई बड़े, फैले हुए पंखों वाला पक्षी आकाश में तिरता है। पांव चलते हैं, आंखें देखती हैं, कान सुनते हैं – काश! कि हम नितांत इच्छारहित हो सकते! तभी जीवनग्राही हो सकता है। अन्यथा इच्छा के कड़े छिलके में वह सूख जाता है, मुरझा जाता है और कंठस्थ किए हुए हिसाब के पहाड़ों के पुंज की तरह हो जाता है।” (संस्कार, पृ0 110)
‘संस्कार‘ उपन्यास प्रतीक उपन्यास है जो धर्म और धर्मशास्त्र के परम्परागत स्वरूप और परिभाषाओं पर प्रश्नचिह्न लगाता हुआ उनके जड़ स्वरूप से निकले ब्राह्मणवाद, अंधविश्वासों, रूढ़ियों और परम्परागत संस्कारों पर न केवल चोट करता है बल्कि उन्हें बदलते संदर्भ में मानवीय दृष्टि से मूल्यांकित करने का बीड़ा भी उठाता है। इसलिए यह उपन्यास ब्राह्मणवादी रूढियों से विद्रोह करने वाले नारणप्पा के शव के दाह संस्कार के जटिल प्रश्न में नहीं उलझता बल्कि उसे प्रस्थान बिन्दु मानते हुए समस्त संकीर्णताओं, स्वार्थों और अमानवीयताओं के बीच छिपी उन संभावनाओं की तलाश करता है जो विकल्प रूप में मनुष्य–समाज का निर्माण और संस्कार करने में सहायक है।
अपने इस महत उद्देश्य की पूर्ति हेतु उपन्यासकार ने पात्रों और घटनाओं को प्रतीक रूप में इस्तेमाल किया है। संकट का बिन्दु है विद्रोही नारणप्पा की प्लेग से अकाल मृत्यु और उसके दाह संस्कार का प्रश्न। इसी के इर्द–गिर्द धर्म और धर्मशास्त्र की जड़ता, ब्राह्मणवाद का खोखलापन, विद्रोह की दिशाहीनता और नव–निर्माण की अनिवार्यता को बुना गया है। नारणप्पा इस उपन्यास में बार–बार एक ही बात उठाता है कि
