बचपन में रामधारी सिंह दिनकर की कविता पढ़ी थी ‘मेरे नगपति मेरे विशाल/ साकार दिव्य गौरव विराट’. हिमालय पर थी. बचपन से हिमालय की मन में एक छवि रही है कि वह हमारा रक्षक है. वही हिमालय बार-बार कहर बनकर टूट रहा है अपने बच्चों पर. अभी हाल में एक पुस्तक पढ़ी ‘हिमालय का कब्रिस्तान’, जिसके लेखक हैं लक्ष्मी प्रसाद पंत. प्रकाशक है वाणी प्रकाशन. पढ़ते हुए बर्फीली चोटियों के हिमालय, यति जैसे न जाने कितने रहस्यों को समेट कर रखने वाले हिमालय, शिव के वास स्थल कैलाश पर्वत के हिमालय की छवि बदलने लगती है. उसकी वास्तविकता का सामना होने लगता है. बचपन से जो मन में उसकी जो ‘साकार दिव्य विराट’ छवि थी कहीं न कहीं वह दरकने लगती है.
हाल में हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में कई बड़े हादसे हुए- केदारनाथ, कश्मीर, काठमांडू में. कितने लोग मरे इसकी ठीक-ठीक गणना भी नहीं की जा सकती. लेखक ने बड़े दर्द के साथ याद करते हुए लिखा है कि मेरे लिए हिमालय आना न जाने क्यों हर बार दुखद ही रहा. वही हिमालय जहाँ सैलानी छुट्टियाँ मनाने जाते हैं, भक्त मन्नतें मांगने जाते हैं, मुरादें पूरी करने के लिए दुर्गम रास्तों को पार करके जाते हैं. वही हिमालय बार-बार दुस्वप्न की तरह से प्रतीत होने लगा है, कुदरत के कहर के कारण जाना जाने लगा है.
एक पत्रकार के रूप में लेखक लक्ष्मी प्रसाद पन्त को हिमालय के इन दुर्गम इलाकों में आपदाओं की रिपोर्टिंग के लिए जाना पड़ा. वह गए तो थे एक सजग पत्रकार के रूप में लेकिन इन आपदाओं ने उनके अंदर के संवेदनशील लेखक को जगा दिया. उन्होंने बड़ी संवेदना के साथ इस पुस्तक में बार-बार आने वाली इन आपदाओं के कारणों की पड़ताल की है, सरकार द्वारा बरती जा रही ढिलाई और सुस्ती की तरफ इशारा किया है और यह समझने का प्रयास भी किया है कि आगे इससे बचने के लिए क्या किया जा सकता है.
सरकारें आपदा प्रबंधन के लिए तैयार नहीं रहती हैं जिनके कारण बड़े पैमाने पर जानें जाती हैं. लेखक ने लोमहर्षक तरीके से वर्णन किया है कि किस तरह से केदारनाथ में, काठमांडू में सरकारें समय पर राहत प्रबंधन का काम नहीं कर पाई. किस तरह लाखों लोगों को भगवान् के भरोसे छोड़ दिया जाता है? किस तरह से सरकारें संवेदनहीन हो गई हैं, जिनका ध्यान मृतकों के आंकड़ों को छिपाने पर अधिक रहता है, मुआवजे देने में आनाकानी करने पर रहता है, सरकारी माल के लूटपाट पर रहता है? सबसे अफ़सोस की बात है कि सरकारें बार-बार आने वाली आपदाओं के बावजूद चेत नहीं रही है, वह ऐसे ठोस उपाय नहीं कर पा रही है जिससे कि जब ऐसी आपदाएं आयें तो हम सचेत रहें और जिससे कि उसके नुक्सान को कम किया का सके.
लेखक ने बड़ी पीड़ा के साथ इस बात की ओर ध्यान दिलाया है कि विकास और पर्यावरण के के बीच के संतुलन को हम भूल गए हैं. लेखक की यह पंक्ति विचारणीय है कि प्रकृति को हमने परखनली शिशु बना दिया है. जबकि जरूरत हिमालय को नष्ट होने से बचाने की है. उस हिमालय को जो देश की जरुरत का 60 फीसद जल देता है, जो मानसून की लाइफलाइन है. भारत में हिमालयी टूरिज्म से होने वाली आय 700 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक है. लेखक की यह चिंता वाजिब लगती है कि विकास और पर्यावरण के बीच संतुलन स्थापित किया जाना चाहिए नहीं तो तबाही के सिवा कुछ नहीं बचेगा. हिमालय बार-बार चीख-चीख कर इस बात की चेतावनी दे रहा है.
लक्ष्मी प्रसाद पंत की यह किताब महज आंकड़ों की बाजीगरी नहीं है बल्कि उनके भीतर जो कवियोचित संवेदना है वह इस किताब को मार्मिक बनाती है. हिंदी में इस तरह की किताबें कम लिखी जाती हैं. इसे लिखकर लक्ष्मी पंत ने यह सिद्ध किया है कि वे सच्चे अर्थों में हिमालय पुत्र हैं, जिनके भीतर अपने पुरखों की धरती को बचाने की गहरी चिंता और संवेदना है. हम सबको यह पुस्तक जरूर पढनी चाहिए, जो सैलानी की तरह हिमालय के क्षेत्रों में जाते हैं और वहां गन्दगी फैलाकर चले आते हैं. हिमलाय को बचान हम सबकी चिंता में शामिल होना चाहिए, उस हिमलाय को जिसे देवताओं की भूमि के रूप में देखा जाता रहा है.
