दरियागंज की 21 नंबर गली के सामने से जब भी गुजरता हूँ मुझे 90 के दशक के आरंभिक वर्षों के वे दिन याद आ जाते हैं जब इस गली का आकर्षण मेरे लिए बहुत अधिउक होता था. वहां दीवान पब्लिकेशन्स का दफ्तर था, जहाँ से फ़िल्मी कलियाँ नामक पत्रिका का प्रकाशन होता था. उसके संपादक ब्रजेश्वर मदान थे. मेरा एक सीनियर दोस्त नरेश शर्मा उनका इतना बड़ा फैन था कि उनकी हर कहानी पर फिल्म बनाना चाहता था. यह बात अलग है कि उसने आज तक फिल्म नहीं बनाई. उसने आज तक कोई फिल्म नहीं बनाई. हाँ, एफटीआई, पुणे से सिनेमाटोग्राफी की पढ़ाई करने के बाद उसने फिल्म सिखाने का इंस्टिट्यूट जरूर खोल लिया.
बहरहाल, बात 21 नम्बर गली की कर रहा था. उस गली में ब्रजेश्वर मदान का दफ्तर था. नरेश शर्मा अक्सर उनसे मिलने जाता था और एकाध बार मुझे भी ले गया. मैं अकसर जाने लगा. उन दिनों मेरे ऊपर फिल्मों के लिए लिखने का फितूर सवार था और नरेश का कहना था कि ब्रजेश्वर मदान से अच्छा मुझे कोई फिल्मों पर लिखना सिखा नहीं सकता था.
मैं अक्सर शाम के समय जाता था. उन दिनों वहीं पास में टेलीफोन विभाग का दफ्तर था जिसमें सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक अधिकारी थे. लेकिन हम सब उन्हें जासूसी उपन्यासों के बड़े लेखक के रूप में जानते थे. ब्रजेश्वर मदान और सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक बड़े अच्छे मित्र थे. दोनों लेखक थे और कई बार शाम को दोनों महफ़िल जमाते थे. मैंने ऊपर लिखा था कि मैं अक्सर शाम के समय ब्रजेश्वर मदान से मिलने जाता था. साढ़े बारह रुपये का बस पास था. होस्टल के सामने से बस पकड़कर दरियागंज आ जाता. पैसे भी कह्र्च नहीं होते थे और शाम भी अच्छी बन जाती थी.
कई बार दोनों की उस महफ़िल में मुझे भी शामिल होने का मौका मिला. हालाँकि, सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक को इसकी याद अब नहीं है. लेकिन तब मैं ऐसा कुछ था भी नहीं जिसे कोई याद रखता. ब्रजेश्वर मदान से अधिक मोहब्बत करने वाला लेखक मैंने नहीं देखा. जिंदगी भर शाम के समय वे महफ़िल जमाते रहे. उनको अकेले पीना पसंद नहीं था. हम लोग उनके साथ पीते जाते और वे कभी माला सिन्हा, कभी शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा के बारे में बताते जाते थे. बहुत सम्मोहक लगता था.
किस्से का किस्सा यह है कि पीने के बाद कई बार सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक और ब्रजेश्वर मदान में बहस हो जाया करती थी. मदान साहब गंभीर लेखक थे और पाठक जी लोकप्रिय. कहते हैं कि एक बार मदान साहब ने पीने के बाद सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक को काफी धिक्कारा और कहा कि तुम जैसे जासूसी लेखक लेखन को क्या जानोगे? गली-गली में चार आने में तुम्हारी किताबें किराए पर मिल जाती हैं. पाठक जी चुपचाप सुनते रहे. उसके कुछ दिन बाद उनका नया उपन्यास आया जिसकी पहली पंक्ति थी- गोली चली और ब्रजेश्वर मदान ढेर हो गया!
यह किस्सा मुझे उदय प्रकाश ने सुनाया था. मैंने कई बार पाठक जी से उस उपन्यास का नाम जानने की कोशिश की. पाठक जी ब्रजेश्वर मदान का नाम सुनकर भावुक जरूर हो जाते हैं लेकिन वे हर बार इस बात से साफ़ साफ़ इनकार कर देते हैं कि ऐसा कोई उपन्यास उन्होंने लिखा भी था.
लेकिन मैं लेखक हूँ सच से ज्यादा किस्सों में यकीन रखने वाला.
जब भी दरियागंज की 21 नंबर गली के सामने से गुजरता हूँ तो मुझे मदान साहब की याद आ जाती है. यह किस्सा याद आ जाता है.
हाँ, मैं यह बताना भूल गया कि मैं फिल्मों पर लिखना नहीं सीख पाया. बल्कि मैंने फिल्मों पर कभी लिखा ही नहीं. जबकि शुरुआत फिल्मों पर लिखने के सपने से ही हुई थी.
यह सच है कोई किस्सा नहीं!
