मशहूर लेखक मनोहर श्याम जोशी की आज पुण्यतिथि है. 2006 में आज के ही दिन उनका देहांत हो गया था. जीते जी किम्वदंती बन चुके उस लेखक के लेखन से जुड़ा एक किस्सा आज याद आ गया. बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं इस किस्से को. एक महान किस्सागो की स्मृति को प्रणाम- मॉडरेटर

1980 के दशक के आरंभिक वर्षों की कुछ ऐसी घटनाएँ हैं जो हमारी स्मृति पटल पर अंकित रह गई उनमें 1982 में दिल्ली में आयोजित हुए एशियाई खेलों के दौरान टीवी के रंगीन प्रसारण की शुरुआत है. 1983 में क्रिकेट विश्व कप में भारत की जीत है. 1984 में श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या है. लेकिन जिन कार्यक्रमों ने हमें टीवी का परमानेंट दर्शक बना दिया वह ‘हमलोग’ और ‘बुनियाद’ जैसे धारावाहिकों का प्रसारण था. हमलोग का निर्देशन पी. कुमार वासुदेव ने किया था और ‘बुनियाद’ का रमेश सिप्पी ने. उसी रमेश सिप्पी ने जिन्होंने ‘शोले’ फिल्म का निर्देशन किया था. कहा जाता है कि रमेश सिप्पी ने जैसे सिनेमा के परदे पर शोले जैसी फिल्म बनाई जो मील का पत्थर साबित हुई उसी तरह उन्होंने टीवी के लिए ‘बुनियाद’ जैसा सीरियल बनाया जो आज भी टीवी धारावाहिकों के गौरव की तरह याद किया जाता है. यह सच्चाई है कि इसी धारावाहिक ने भारतीय मध्यवर्गीय परिवारों को टीवी का लती बना दिया था. आज टीवी धारावाहिक लिखने वाले लेखक जिस तरह से फेसलेस हो गए हैं तब वह ज़माना नहीं था. उस ज़माने में भारत के इस पहले सफल सोप ओपेरा राइटर की ऐसी धूम मची थी पूछिए मत. कहा जाने लगा था कि टीवी में भी एक सलीम-जावेद का आगमन हो गया. सलीम-जावेद की जोड़ी टूटने को थी. सिनेमा की दुनिया में इस लेखक जोडी ने राज किया था. अभी मैं हाल में ऋषि कपूर की आत्मकथा पढ़ रहा था तो उसमें मैंने पढ़ा कि सलीम जावेद ने बॉबी के बाद ऋषि कपूर को एक फिल्म ऑफर की. जब ऋषि कपूर ने मना कर दिया तो सलीम ने कहा था कि तुम्हारा कैरियर बर्बाद कर दूंगा. हमें मना करने की तुम्हारी हिम्मत कैसे हुई. उसी तरह से मनोहर श्याम जोशी अपने धारावाहिकों की कास्टिंग किया करते थे. न जाने कितने एक्टर को उन्होंने मौका दिया. यह एक अलग प्रसंग है.
आज जो किस्सा सुना रहा हूँ वह अलग है. किस्सा यह है कि ‘बुनियाद’ के बाद मुम्बई फ़िल्मी दुनिया में अचानक मनोहर श्याम जोशी नामक इस लेखक की धूम मची हुई थी. वे दिल्ली में रहकर लिखते थे. जब भी मुम्बई जाते फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशकों में उनसे मिलने की होड़ मच जाती थी. बात 1985 की है. प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्देशक मनमोहन देसाई किसी धाँसू कहानी की तलाश में थे जिसको लेकर वे अमिताभ बच्चन की छवि को बदल देने वाली फिल्म बना सकें. जी.पी. सिप्पी ने एक पार्टी में उनसे कहा कि वे क्यों नहीं मनोहर श्याम जोशी को सुन लेते. खैर, जब अगली बार जोशी जी मुम्बई गए तो मन के नाम से मशहूर मनमोहन देसाई ने उनसे टाइम माँगा. स्टोरी सेशन जमा. कहते हैं कि 3 घंटे में जोशी ने ने बंगाल की क्रांति की पृष्ठभूमि में एक ऐसी कहानी सुनाई कि मनमोहन देसाई हिल गए. उन्होंने उसी समय दस लाख का चेक काटा और बोला डन. यह फिल्म बनेगी इसमें अमिताभ के साथ मिथुन चक्रवर्ती होगा. पूरी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में यह बात आग की तरह फ़ैल गई क्योंकि उस ज़माने में 10 लाख का एडवांस किसी लेखक को तो दूर फिल्म अभिनेताओं में भी अमिताभ बच्चन के अलावा किसी और को नहीं मिला था. लोग कहने लगे एक और स्टार राइटर आ गया.
बहरहाल, जोशी जी दिल्ली लौट आए. जब वे दिल्ली लौटे तो उसके अगले ही दिन मनमोहन देसाई ने दिल्ली के रिज सिनेमा के मालिक को उनके घर भेज दिया. सिनेमा सेठ ने जोशी जी के घर आकर कहा कि मनमोहन देसाई साहब ने यह तय किया है कि फिल्म अभी नहीं बनायेंगे. इसलिए आप एडवांस वापस दे दो. असल में, मनमोहन देसाई ने जिंदगी भर पुनर्जन्म, संयोगों आदि को लेकर फ़िल्में बनाई थी. यह क्रांति वाली फिल्म उनके बस की नहीं थी. उन्होंने सेकेण्ड थॉट दिया होगा और उनको लगा होगा कि यह कहानी उनके बस की नहीं. रिज सिनेमा वाले मनमोहन देसाई के रिश्तेदार होते थे. मनमोहन देसाई ने उनको फोन कर दिया.
जोशी जी ने तत्काल एडवांस लौटा दिया. फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में एडवांस लौटाने का कोई रिवाज़ नहीं था. लेकिन लौटा दिया.
किस्सा यह है कि तब तक दस लाख का एडवांस किसी फ़िल्मी लेखक को नहीं मिला था. और दस लाख का एडवांस किसी ने लौटाया भी नहीं था!
