अस्पृश्यता से यूँ तो विदेशी लोग वाकिफ़ होंगे पर इससे रूबरू कभी न हुए होंगे इसलिए वास्तव में यह कितना दमनीय है, इसका अंदाज़ा वे नहीं लगा सकते। उनके लिए यह समझना कठिन है कि कैसे कुछ अछूत लोगों का जीवन एक हिन्दू बहुल गाँव में बिल्कुल हाशिए पर बीतता है।
रोज़ पूरे गाँव का मैला ढोना, तरह-तरह के दूतकार्य करना, हिन्दू घरों के द्वारे-द्वारे जाकर भोजन जुटाना, हिन्दू वैश्य की दुकान पर दूर से ही बिन छुए तेल-मसाले ख़रीदना, हर घर को अपने घर जैसा सम्मान देना पर याद रहे कि न तुम किसी को छुओ और न तुम्हें कोई छूने पाए।
समस्या यह है कि किस तरीक़े से मैं बता सकूँ कि हिन्दुओं द्वारा अछूतों से कैसा व्यवहार किया जाता है। उनके द्वारा किए जाने वाले व्यवहार का एक साधारण-सा ब्यौरा या मामलों को बताने से यह उद्देश्य प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। इन उदाहरणों को चुनते समय मैंने कुछ अपने और कुछ दूसरों के अनुभवों को काम में लिया है। अपने जीवन की कुछ घटनाओं से मैं प्रारंभ करूँगा।
1916 में मैं भारत लौटा। मुझे बड़ौदा के महाराज ने उच्च शिक्षा के लिए अमेरिका भेजा था। मैंने 1913 से लेकर 1917 तक कोलंबिया यूनिवर्सिटि, न्यू यॉर्क में पढ़ाई की। 1917 में मैंने लंदन आकर लंदन विश्वविद्यालय स्कूल ऑफ़ इकोनॉमिक्स का स्नातकोत्तर विभाग ज्वाइन किया। 1918 में मुझे बिना पढ़ाई पूरी किए बड़ौदा स्टटे की सेवा के लिए वापस लौटना पड़ा क्योंकि मेरी शिक्षा-दीक्षा का ख़र्च वही वहन कर रहे थे, अतः उनकी सेवा के लिए मैं बाध्य था।
पाँच साल के मेरे योरोप व अमेरिका प्रवास ने मेरे दिमाग़ से मेरे अछूत होने की बात पूरी तरह से मिटा दी थी। मुझे याद ही न रहा कि एक अछूत भारत में जहाँ भी जाए, अपने और दूसरों के लिए एक समस्या ही बना रहेगा। पर जब मैं जब स्टेशन से बाहर निकला तो एक ही सवाल से जूझ रहा था कि “कहाँ जाऊँ?
कौन ले जाएगा मुझे?” मैं अशांत महसूस कर रहा था। वहाँ के एक हिंदू होटल के बारे में मुझे पता था। वे मुझे जगह नहीं देंगे। पहचान छुपाकर ही वहाँ रहने की जगह मिल सकती थी।
पर मैं इसके लिए तैयार न था क्योंकि पहचान खुलने पर; जो कि खुलनी तय थी, भीषण परिणामों का निश्चित पूर्वानुमान मुझे था।
बड़ौदा में मेरे वे दोस्त जो अमेरिका में साथ थे, उनका ख़याल आते ही मैंने सोचा “क्या वे मेरा स्वागत करेंगे, यदि मैं गया तो?” मैं ख़ुद को आश्वासन न दे पाया, एक अछूत को अपने घर देख वे शर्मिंदा ही होंगे। मैं स्टेशन की छत के नीचे खड़ा सोचता रहा कि क्या करूँ, कहाँ जाऊँ? तभी मुझे कैम्प में कोई ख़ाली जगह पूछने की सूझी।
इस वक़्त तक मुझे छोड़ सभी स्टेशन से जा चुके थे। कुछ ताँगे वाले जिन्हें सवारी नहीं मिली थी, मुझे ताक रहे थे। मैंने एक को बुलाया और पूछा कि क्या वो कैम्प में किसी होटल के बारे में जानता है। उसने बताया कि वहाँ एक पारसी सराय है और जगह मिल सकती है। एक पारसी प्रबंधक की बात सुन मैं हर्षाया क्योंकि पारसी धर्म के अनुयायियों में अस्पृश्यता की कोई धारणा नहीं है इसलिए स्वयम् से अनुचित व्यवहार का भय अब मुझे नहीं था। हर्षयुक्त आशा और भयमुक्त दिमाग़ के साथ मैंने अपना सामान ताँगे में रखा और ताँगेवाले से पारसी सराय चलने को कहा।
सराय एक दुमंज़िला भवन था। भूमितल पर पारसी अपने परिवार के साथ रहता था। वह सराय के केअरटेकर था और ठहरने वाले यात्रियों को भोजन की आपूर्त्ति भी करता था। ताँगा पहुँचने पर पारसी ने मुझे ऊपरी मंज़िल का रास्ता दिखाया। मैं ऊपर गया और ताँगेवाला मेरे पीछे मेरा सामान ले आया। मैंने उसका भुगतान किया और वह चला गया। मैं एक अस्थायी निवास मिलने और अपनी समस्या के समाप्त होने से ख़ुश था।
मैं आराम से बैठने के लिए अभी अपने कपड़े उतार ही रहा था कि तभी वह केअरटेकर हाथ में किताब लिए आ गया। मेरी अर्द्धनग्न अवस्था में उसने देखा कि मेरे पास सद्रा और कस्ती नहीं थे जो कि एक पारसी होने का प्रमाण होते हैं।
तीखी आवाज़ में उसने पूछा कि मैं कौन हूँ। चूँकि मुझे नहीं पता था कि यह सराय केवल पारसियों के ही ठहरने के लिए है इसलिए मैंने बताया कि मैं एक हिन्दू हूँ। उसने चौंकते हुए बताया कि मैं इस सराय में नहीं ठहर सकता। यह सुनते ही मैं ठंडा पड़ गया क्योंकि वही सवाल मेरे सामने फिर आ गया कि “कहाँ जाऊँ?”
ख़ुद को संयत करते हुए मैंने कहा कि एक हिंदू होते हुए भी मुझे यहाँ रहने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं है, यदि उन्हें न हो तो। उसने जवाब दिया “कैसे? यहाँ ठहरने वालों का नाम मुझे रजिस्टर में लिखना होता है”
मैंने उसकी मुश्किल समझी और कहा कि रजिस्टर में एंट्री के लिए मैं एक छद्म पारसी नाम रख सकता हूँ। “तुम्हें तो कमाने को ही मिलेगा फिर आपत्ति क्यों?”
मैंने देखा कि वो इसके लिए राज़ी दिखा। काफ़ी लम्बे समय से यात्री रहित सराय का वह प्रबंधक थोड़े पैसे बनाने का यह मौक़ा गँवाना नहीं चाहता था।
वह प्रतिदिन के डेढ़ रुपये के भुगतान और पारसी नाम रखने की शर्त पर मान गया। वह नीचे चला गया और मैंने राहत की साँस ली। मैं समस्या के समाधान से प्रसन्न था पर हाय! मैं क्या जानता था कि मेरी यह प्रसन्नता कुछ दिनों ही की थी।
मैं जानता था कि यह छद्म रूप ज़्यादा लंबा नहीं चलेगा। इसलिए मैंने स्टेट बंगला लेने के लिए प्रयास किया पर राज्य के प्रधानमंत्री ने मेरी इस आपद स्थिति पर कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया। यह मेरे ठहरने का ग्यारहवाँ दिन था. कलेवा कर मैं अपने ऑफ़िस जाने के लिए तैयार हो चुका था तथा निकलने ही वाला था कि तभी ज़ीने पर कुछ क़दमों की आहट मैंने सुनी। मुझे लगा कुछ नये मुसाफ़िर रहने आए होंगे पर मैंने देखा कि वे दर्ज़न-भर ग़ुस्से से तमतमाये, लंबे पारसी जिनके हाथों में लाठियाँ थीं।
मेरे कमरे के सामने खड़े हो उन्होंने सवालों की बौछार कर दी।
“कौन हो तुम? यहाँ क्यों आए? पारसी नाम रखने की तुम्हारी हिम्मत भी कैसे हुई? धोखेबाज़! तुमने इस सराय को प्रदूषित कर दिया” मैं चुप खड़ा रहा। क्या जवाब देता। ग़लत पहचान धारण करना एक छल था जो कि पकड़ा गया था। इस खेल में अब मैं एक पारसी भीड़ के द्वारा मारा जा सकता था।
मेरी चुप्पी ने उन्हें और उकसाया। एक बोला कि कब ख़ाली करोगे। उस वक़्त सिर पर की वह छत मुझे अपनी जान से भी अधिक मूल्यवान लगी। इसलिए चुप्पी तोड़ते हुए मैंने उनसे मुझे एक और सप्ताह यहाँ रुकने देने की प्रार्थना की। मैंने सोचा कि इस बीच बंगले के लिए दी गयी मेरी अर्ज़ी मंज़ूर हो जायेगी।
पर वे पारसी सुनने के मूड में नहीं थे। उन्होंने आख़िरी चेतावनी देते हुए आज शाम तक ही बोरिया-बिस्तर समेट जाने को कह दिया। पारसियों के जाने के बाद मैं रोया क्योंकि मेरे सर पर की यह छत अनमोल थी। मैं बैठ कर इस परेशानी से निकलने का रास्ता खोजने लगा।
बंगला मिलने तक मेरे लिए यह एक अस्थायी समस्या थी अतः मैंने दोस्तों के पास जाने का सोचा। हम अछूतों में से मेरा कोई दोस्त बड़ौदा में नहीं था, सब दूसरी जातियों और वर्गों के थे। एक हिन्दू और एक हिंदुस्तानी ईसाई। पहले मैं हिन्दू दोस्त के यहाँ गया और आपबीती कह सुनाई। उसने कहा कि यदि मैं उसके यहाँ ठहरा तो उसके नौकर उसे छोड़ जायेंगे। मुझे जवाब मिल गया था सो मैंने उस पर दबाव नहीं डाला।
क्रिश्चन दोस्त के पास जाने पर मुझे उत्तर मिला कि वह अपनी पत्नी से सलाह करके मुझे बतायेगा। यह एक डिप्लोमैटिक जवाब था क्योंकि वे दोनों पति-पत्नी ब्राह्मण परिवार से थे। दोस्त तो क्रिश्चन बन उदार विचारों वाला हो गया था पर उसकी पत्नी रूढ़ियों में भरोसा करने वाली थी। एक अछूत का घर आना उसे सह्य न होता। उम्मीद की यह आख़िरी किरण भी ओझल हो गयी।
शाम के चार बजे मैं दोस्त के घर से निकला। अब कहाँ जाऊँ, यही सबसे बड़ा सवाल मेरे सामने मुँह बाये खड़ा था। मुझे सराय छोड़नी ही थी और जाने के लिए कोई दोस्त भी न बचा था। केवल एक विकल्प वापिस बम्बई लौटने का बचा था। रात नौ बजे एक ट्रेन बड़ौदा से बम्बई के लिए थी। ये घंटे मैंने शहर के छोर पर बने कमाठी बाग़ में गुज़ारने की सोची। ये पूरा वक़्त मैं अपनी बदहाली पर दुःखी मन से सोचता रहा।
रात आठ बजे मैं बाग़ से निकल मैं अपना सामान लेने पारसी सराय पहुँचा । मैं बहुत उम्मीदों के साथ बड़ौदा गया था। मैंने शैक्षिक नौकरियों की पेशकश ठुकराईं थीं क्योंकि मेरी समझ में बड़ौदा के महाराज की सेवा करना मेरा पहला फ़र्ज़ था क्योंकि उन्होंने ही मेरी तालीम का ख़र्च उठाया था।
पर केवल ग्यारह दिनों के बाद ही मैं बम्बई लौट आया। दर्ज़न-भर पारसी लठैतों के सामने उनसे दया की भीख माँगते ख़ुद का वह दृश्य अट्ठारह सालों में भी मेरे मन से नहीं मिट सका। अब भी मैं साफ़-साफ़ याद कर सकता हूँ, यह याद कभी बिन आँसुओं के नहीं आती। तब मैंने पहली बार जाना कि न केवल हिदुओं बल्कि पारसियों के लिए भी मैं एक अछूत ही था।
