प्रिय रमेश जी,
आपका पहला पत्र भी मिल गया था। हर दिन आपको लिखने की सोचता था किन्तु भीतर की निष्क्रियता कुछ इतनी गहरी थी कि हमेशा उसे ऐसे क्षण के लिए टाल देता था, जब मैं कुछ अधिक presentable shape में अपने को पाऊँगा–चूँकि उस घड़ी के आने की उम्मीद फ़िलहाल नहींहै, इसलिए आपको तुरन्त लिख रहा हूँ।
यों मेरी बाहरी हालत आपसे बिल्कुल उल्टी है–इस माने में–कि अक्सर लोगों से मिलना होता रहता है। आजकल वैद अमरीका से आए हुए हैं और उनसे, रामू गांधी, रामकुमार से प्रायः बातचीत होती रहती है। मेरा जीवन लगा बँधा नहीं है, कभी-कभार सब कुछ छोड़ कर अमरीकी लायब्रेरी में बैठा रहता है। कभी कोई अच्छा लेख, कविता पढ़ने को मिल जाती है, तो मानो भीतर ठहरे पानी में कोई तरंग उठ जाती है। किन्तु रात को सोने से पहले बीते हुए दिन के बारे में सोचता हूँ तो अपने पर गहरी हताशा होती है। हताशा न हो, इसलिए लिखने की कोशिशें भी चलती रहती हैं–पर अब आश्चर्य होता है अपनी मन्द गति को देखकर–फिर अपने को तसल्ली देने की कोशिश करता हूँ कि एक सार्थक लाइन लिख लेना बेहतर है, हालाँकि वह अपनी ही जड़ीभूत स्थिति का justification जान पड़ता है। इसी में एक कहानी लिख गया हूँ… मेरे पास कम लिखने का कोई कारण भी नहीं है–आपकी तरह न परिवार की ज़िम्मेवारी, न नौकरी का सिरदर्द–इसलिए अपनी बाँझ स्थिति असह्य जान पड़ती है। इसके रहते मस्तिष्क में एक vicious circle बन जाता है; साहित्य चर्चायें मुझे बहुत depress करने लगी हैं क्यूँकि यदि कुछ लिखना न हो तो, ‘लिखने’ की बात करना सिर्फ़ शून्यता की दीवार को चाटने जैसा जान पड़ता है–बिल्कुल एक parasitic कर्म की तरह।
ऐसी मनःस्थिति में लखनऊ के लेखक-शिविर में जाने के लिए मैं अपने को नितान्त अयोग्य पाता हूँ — यद्यपि उसके महत्त्व को सयझता हूँ–ख़ासकर आज की हालत में, जब साहित्य और रचना-कर्म को अवमूल्यित करने में इतने लोग एक साथ जुटे हुए हैं। वात्स्यायन जी का लेखक-शिविर sanity के स्वर को अधिक मुखर-रूप से प्रस्तुत कर सकेगा–स्वयम् साहित्य की बुनियादी बातों को निरे अप्रासंगिक issue से अलग करके परिभाषित कर सकेगा इसमें मुझे रत्ती-भर भी सन्देह नहीं है। इसलिए मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप इसमें अवश्य सम्मिलित हों। आप अपनी nervousness या आत्मविश्वास के अभाव की बात करते हैं किन्तु जयपुर में मैंने आपको प्रत्यक्ष in action देखा है–कम से कम मुझे आप भ्रमित नहीं कर सकते।
मैंं स्वयम् अपनी गिरी हुई मनःस्थिति के बावजूद लेखक-शिविर आता यदि एक दूसरा commitment मुझे न बाँधता। मेरे एक जेसुइट मित्र ने लंबे अर्से से मुझे बिहार आने के लिए कह रखा था, ताकि मैं बिहार के गाँवों में मिशनरी लोगों का काम देख सकूँ। मैं अभी तक बिहार नहीं गया हूँ–वहाँ जाकर बौद्ध गया और नालन्दा देखने का एक अतिरिक्त मोह भी है। मैंने उनसे फ़रवरी के अन्त तक आने का वादा किया था–उस समय–जब लेखक-शिविर की कोई बात नहीं उठी थी। अब मैं एक अजीब धर्म-संकट में फँस गया हूँ जिसके बारे में मैंने वात्स्यायन जी को भी लिख दिया है।
मैं कल ही शुक्ल जी का उपन्यास ख़रीद कर लाया हूँ। आपने जो उनके बारे में लिखा है, उससे उन्हें पढ़ने की तीव्र आकांक्षा जग गयी है। इधर मैंंने आपकी पुस्तक के कुछ निबन्ध और ‘पूर्वग्रह’ में प्रेमचन्द पर प्रकाशित आपका लेख भी पढ़ा–बहुत ही पसन्द आए और देर तक उनमें डूबा रहा। विशेषकर प्रेमचन्द पर आपके लेख ने इतना अभिभूत किया कि पिछले दिनों जितने भी मित्र मिले उनसे उसकी चर्चा करता रहा। सिर्फ़ एक बात खटकी — आपने अपने विचारों को उनकी सिर्फ़ दो कहानियों पर केंद्रित किया है, यह विश्लेषण अभूतपूर्व है–किन्तु यदि आप प्रेमचन्द के समूचे लेखन के संदर्भ में इन दो outstanding कहानियों को देखते तो उनकी कमज़ोरियों के संदर्भ में उनकी heights of achievements कुछ ज़्यादा अच्छी तरह समझ में आतीं। या शायद यह मेरा ही नाजायज़ लालच है– उस लेख को पढ़ कर मेरी भूख कुछ इतनी तेज़ हो गयी कि मुझे लगा कि आपको प्रेमचन्द का एक comprehensive analysis करना चाहिए–जो आज तक शायद किसी ने नहीं किया है। प्रेमचन्द की प्रासंगिकता जैसे प्रश्नों से ऊबकर मैंने स्वयम् ‘प्रासंगिकता’ को लेकर एक लंबा लेख लिख डाला–एक डेढ़ महीने पहले ‘हिन्दुस्तान साप्ताहिक’ में आया था, मिले तो देखिएगा।
अवांगार्द पर आपका लेख Indian literature में आ रहा है, यह जानकर बहुत ख़ुशी हुई। मणि कौल की फ़िल्म–अपने अंग्रेज़ी सबटाइटल्स के साथ यहाँ फ़िल्म फ़ेस्टिवल में दिखायी गयी थी किन्तु एक बार उसे देख कर दुबारा देखने का साहस नहीं जुटा सका यद्यपि आपके अनुवाद को देखने की तीव्र इच्छा थी।
समय मिले तो पत्र भेजिएगा। मलयज भी इधर बहुत दिनों से नहीं मिले। ज्योत्स्ना जी को स्नेह दीजिए–आजकल वह क्या लिख-पढ़ रही हैं?

प्रिय शाह जी,
जब से आपका पत्र मिला, आपको लिखने का ख़याल बार-बार मन को कचोटता था, किन्तु पिछले दिन कुछ ऐसी विचित्र मनः स्थिति में गुज़रे कि मैं स्वयम् अपनी निष्क्रियता के आगे हथियार डाल कर बैठा रहा। जब हम थोड़ा-बहुत कुछ करते रहते हैं तो बहुत कुछ हो जाता है और जब कुछ नहीं होता तो थोड़ा बहुत करने की शक्ति भी चुक.जाती है। निठल्ले दिनों में बेचारी किताबें थोड़ा-बहुत सहारा देती हैं–या मित्रों के पत्र–लेकिन किताबें कब तक शून्य का गड्ढा भरती रहेंऔर मित्रों के पत्र तभी मिलते हैं जब उन्हें हमारी ओर से ‘ख़ुराक’ मिलती रहे। आप मेरी ख़ुराफ़ात को ख़ुराक समझ कर संतोष कर लेंगे, इसीलिए आपको लिख रहा हूँ।
आपके पत्र को पढ़ कर पागल-सी लालसा हुई कि यदि हम मौक़ा निकाल कर रामकृष्ण मिशन के आश्रम में जाकर रह सकें (जहाँ आप कुछ दिन रहे थे) तो कैसा रहे? दिल्ली की तपती, सूनी दुपहरों में उसकी महज़ कल्पना ही सुखदायी लगती है। वह आश्रम अल्मोड़ा से कितनी दूर है, वहाँ जाने के लिए किसकी अनुमति लेनी आवश्यक है आदि बातों का हवाला लिखें, तो कुछ फ़ैसला किया जाए। वैसे आपके कॉलेज की छुट्टियाँ कब हो रही हैं।
आजकल मैं ऑर्वेल की बहुत सुन्दर प्रेरणादायी जीवनी पढ़ रहा हूँ। ऑर्वेल शायद अकेले लेखक हैं जिनके गद्य की ईमानदारी सीधे-सीधे उनके जीवन के नैतिक-संघर्ष के साथ जुड़ गयी थी; एक-एक शब्द कील की तरह चुभता जाता है; समाजवाद की परम्परा के साथ जोड़ने के लिए उन्होंने जिस तरह एक तरफ़ उच्च वर्ग की प्रभुसत्ता और दूसरी तरफ़ कम्युनिस्टों की संस्कारहीनता के विरुद्ध अथक संघर्ष किया था, इसकी ओर हमारे देश के समाजवादियों का ध्यान जाना चाहिए। अगर हमारे देश के वामपंथी दल इतने अंधे और पाखंडी न होते तो ऑर्वेल का जीवन और लेखन उनके लिए एक अमूल्य निधि होता, ऐसा मैं सोचता हूँ। सिर्फ़ दो समाजवादी अपवाद दिखायी देते हैं–लोहिया और साही–शायद इसीलिए दोनों के शब्दों में इतनी गहरी, संस्कार सम्पन्न गरिमा और सत्य की चमक दिखाई देती है। इधर मैंने साही जी की कवितायें, जो ‘साखी’ में संग्रहीत हैं, पढ़ीं। मुझे वे अद्भुत जान पड़ीं; शायद ही किसी अन्य कवि का इतना प्रभाव मुझ पर पड़ा हो, जितना साही जी की इन कविताओं का–बार-बार उनकी और मवयज की मृत्यु पर गहरा अफ़सोस होता है; दोनों की सृजनात्मक ऊर्जा मृत्यु के समय अपनी चोटी पर थी। untimely death in the real sense of the word.
मैंने एक पत्र ज्योत्स्ना जी को भेजा था, आशा है मिला होगा, आपने जिन दो ‘ख़ुशख़बरियों’ की चर्चा की, उनमें कोई सच्चाई नहीं है!
धर्मयुग की एडिटरी के लिए मेरे पास कोई ऐसा ऑफ़र नहीं आया, जिसे अस्वीकार करने का भी सुख मिल पाता; पता नहीं, वह अफ़वाह किसने उड़ाई है? जहाँ तक उपन्यास शुरू करने का प्रश्न है, वह भी कुछ जले पर नमक छिड़कने की ही तरह आनंददायी ‘ख़बर’ जान पड़ती है; मैं इन दिनों जो कुछ भी लिखने की कोशिश करता हूँ, उसे उपन्यास की जगह प्रलाप कहना ज़्यादा ठीक होगा या शायद आत्म-विलाप–क्योंकि जितना कुछ लिखता हूँ, उतना ही अपने पर अफ़सोस होता है।
मुनिया और टीकू की परीक्षायें समाप्त हो गयी होंगी। स्वामी मिले होंगे। पत्र शीघ्र भेजें–
