आज भारत के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरु की पुण्यतिथि है. आज के ही दिन 1964 में उनका देहांत हुआ था. लेखकों-कलाकारों से जैसा राग नेहरु जी का था वैसा किसी और प्रधानमंत्री का नहीं हुआ. हिंदी के लेखकों को भी सबसे अधिक मान-सम्मान उनके ही काल में मिला. राष्ट्रकवि रामधारी सिंह ‘दिनकर’ ने उनके ऊपर एक किताब लिखी थी ‘लोकदेवता नेहरु’. बाद में वह पुस्तक ‘पंडित नेहरु और अन्य महापुरुष’ के नाम से छपी. उसका एक प्रसंग जिससे यह पता चलता है कि वे कितने जनतांत्रिक थे- मॉडरेटर

पूज्यवर पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू को दूर से देखने के अवसर तो मुझे भी कई बार मिले थे, किन्तु नजदीक से पहले-पहले उन्हें मैंने सन् 1948 ई० में देखा, जब वे किसी राजनैतिक सम्मेलन का उद्घाटन करने को मुजफ्फरपुर आए थे। उस दिन सभा में मुझे एक कविता पढ़नी थी, अतएव लोगों ने मुझे भी मंच पर ही बिठा दिया था। जिस मसनद के सहारे पंडितजी बैठे थे, मैं उसके पीछे था और मेरे ही करीब बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री डॉक्टर श्रीकृष्ण सिंह तथा एक अन्य कांग्रेस नेता श्री नन्दकुमार सिंह भी बैठे थे। उससे थोड़े ही दिन पूर्व मुँगेर में श्रीबाबू को राजर्षि टंडनजी ने एक अभिनन्दन-ग्रन्थ भेंट किया था। इस अभिनन्दन ग्रन्थ के आयोजक श्री नन्दकुमार सिंह थे तथा उसके सम्पादकों में मुख्य नाम मेरा ही था। सुयोग देखकर नन्दकुमार बाबू के ग्रन्थ की एक प्रति जवाहरलालजी के सामने बढ़ा दी। पंडितजी ने उसे कुछ उलटा-पुलटा और देखते-देखते उनके चेहरे पर क्रोध की लाली फैल गई। फिर वे हाथ हिलाकर बुदबुदाने लगे, ‘‘ये गलत बातें हैं। लोग ऐसे काम को बढ़ावा क्यों देते हैं ? मैं कानून बनाकर ऐसी बातों को रोक दूँगा।’’ आवाज़ श्रीबाबू के कान में पड़ी, तो उनका चेहरा फक हो गया। नन्दकुमार बाबू की ओर घूमकर वे सिर्फ इतना बोले, ‘‘आपने मुझे कहीं का नहीं रखा।’’
अजब संयोग कि उन्हीं दिनों अज्ञेयजी और लंकासुन्दरम् नेहरू-अभिनन्दन-ग्रन्थ का सम्पादन कर रहे थे। यह ग्रन्थ सन् 1950 ई० में तैयार हुआ और उसी वर्ष 26 जनवरी के दिन पंडितजी को अर्पित भी किया गया। उस समय तमाशा देखने को मैं भी दिल्ली गया हुआ था। जब राजेन्द्र बाबू ने राष्ट्रपति-भवन में प्रवेश किया, उसके एक दिन पूर्व मैं उनसे मिलने गया था। बातों के सिलसिले में मैंने राजेन्द्र बाबू से जानना चाहा कि पंडितजी को अभिनन्दन-ग्रन्थ कौन भेंट करेगा। राजेन्द्र बाबू ने कहा, ‘‘लोगों की इच्छा है कि ग्रन्थ मेरे ही हाथों दिया जाना चाहिए, मगर पंडितजी इस विचार को पसन्द नहीं करते। वे मेरे पास आए थे और कह रहे थे कि कल से आप राष्ट्रपति हो जाएँगे।
