नवजागरण काल में स्त्री शिक्षा का प्रश्न प्रमुख बनकर उभरा था। हिन्दी के विचारक और समाज सुधारक यह सोच रहे थे कि स्त्रियों को पढ़ने के लिए कौन से स्कूलों में भेजा जाय। अधिकार कुलीन वर्ग के लोगों का यह सोचना था कि वे अपनी कन्याओं को मिशनरी स्कूलों में पढ़ने के लिए नहीं भेजेगें। ऐसे लोगों को डर था कि कहीं इन स्कूलों में पढ़ने से लड़की इसाई और मुसलमान न बन जाय। इस समस्यां से निपटने के लिए उस दौर के समाज सुधारकों ने स्त्री शिक्षा के लिए बालिका विद्यालय की स्थापना पर बल देना शुरु किया। इसके तहत कन्या महाविद्यालय, जंलान्धर, विक्टोरिया कालेज, पटियाला, इजाबेला थार्वन कालेज, लखनऊ, थियोसोफिकल कालेज, बनारस, और क्रास्थवेट गल्र्स कालेज, प्रयाग खोला गया। स्त्री शिक्षा के विकाश में ये कालेज मिल के पत्थर माने जा सकते है। इन कालेजों के द्वारा स्त्री शिक्षा का अंधकार जो फैला था वह थोड़ा काम हुआ, और स्त्री शिक्षा की मसाल के रुप में इन स्कूलों का उदय हुआ।
कन्या महाविद्यालय, जंलान्धर की नीव लाला देवराज ने 26 सित्मबर 1886 को रखी थी। पहले इसका नाम जनाना स्कूल था। इस स्कूल के नामकरण को लेकर काफी चिन्तन – मनन के बाद फैसला लिया गया कि यह नाम मुस्लामनी है, सो इसे बदल कर कोई और नाम रखा जाए। इसके बाद नाम बदल कर ‘गल्र्स स्कूल’ रख दिया गया। इस नाम को लेकर भी सवाल उठने लगे कि यह तो स्कूल का अंग्रेजी नाम है, क्यों न इसका नाम हिन्दी में रखा जाए। आखिर सबकी सहमती से सन 1891 में अंग्रेजी और मुस्लमानी नाम छोड़कर हिन्दी में ‘कन्या पाठशाला’ कर दिया गया। लाला देवराज जी की मां काहन देवी स्त्री शिक्षा की बड़ी समर्थक थीं। वे चाहती थी कि कन्याओं के लिए एक पाठशाला खुले। कुछ दिन बाद लाला देवराज जब आर्य सभा के महांमत्री बने तो सभा के सदस्याओं समक्ष यह प्रस्ताव रखा कि कन्याओं के लिए एक प्रथक पाठशाला खोली जाए। सभा ने उनके इस प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया। सभा के सदस्यों नें यह तय किया कि इस पाठशाला का खर्च आर्यसभा खुद उठाएगी। इसके बाद पाठशाला को चलाने का कार्य खुद लाला देवराज ने अपने हाथों में ले लिया। लेकिन दुख की बात है यह कि यह पाठशाला सुचारू रूप से नहीं चल सकी। जब पाठशाला ठीक ढंग से नहीं चली तो आर्यसभा ने चन्दा देना बंद कर दिया। इसके बाद लाला देवराज की माता काहन देवी पाठशाला को अपने घर पर चलाने का संकल्प लिया। पाठशाला में पढ़ने के लिए एक अध्यापिका माई भगवती को एक रुपया महीने का वेतन और चार रोटी देने की शर्त पर माई भगवती को इस पाठशाला में अध्यापिका रुप में नियुक्त किया।
लाला देवराज इस विद्यालय को आगे ले जाने के लिए जी जान से जुट गए। 30 अगस्त 1890 को लाला देवराज अन्तरंग सभा के सामने यह प्रस्ताव रखा कि जालन्धर समाज द्वारा कान्याओं के लिए एक गल्र्स स्कूल खोला जाए। यह भी कहा गया कि पुरानी कामेटी ने पाठशाला के लिए सन्तोषजनक कार्य नहीं किया है। इसलिए पुरानी कमेटी को हटाकर नई कमेटी बनाई जाए। नई कमेटी बनी, इस कमेटी ने पाठशाला को ध्यान में रखते हुए कुछ नये नियम बनाए। फिर भी, पाठशाला की जैसी उन्नति होनी चाहिए, वैसी नहीं हुई।‘ इस कमेटी ने सन 1891 मे अपनी रिर्पोट पेश की।जिसमें कहा गया कि पाठशाला में पढ़ाने के लिए लायक अध्यापिका के लिए कोशिश की गई, पर हमारी कोशिश फलदायी नहीं हुई। छह वर्ष बाद जब इस पाठशाला का नाम कन्या पाठशाला हुआ। तब इसमें कुछ प्रगति दिखाई देने लगी। सन 1892 में इस पाठशाला के पहला उत्सव हुआ। इस अवसर पर विद्यालय की कन्याओं ने गुरुशिक्षा का खेल खेला। इस खेल की प्रतिक्रिया जबरजस्त हुई। कुछ लोगों ने इस खेल को परम्पाराओं के प्रतिकूल समझा। कुछ लोगों ने इस खेल को नटनियों का नाच बताकर यह भ्रम फैलाया कि इस स्कूल में केवल कन्याओं को नाच- गाना सिखाया जाता है। जब इस पाठशाला की स्थापना हुई थी तब स्त्री शिक्षा का विरोध अपने चरम पर था। इस पाठशाला में पढ़ने वाली स्त्रियों को लोग किसी कौतुहल से कम नहीं समझते थे। इतना ही नही कुछ लोग पढ़ने वाली कन्याओं को वैश्याये तक कहकर पुकारते थे। खुद लाला जी के परिवार वाले स्त्री शिक्षा के विरोध में थे। इस बात का आन्दाजा लगाया जा सकता है कि जब लाला देवराज ने यह स्कूल खोला होगा तब उन्हें कितने विरोध का सामना करना पड़ होगा।
कन्या पाठशाला जालन्धर धीरे धीरे प्रगति की ओर बढता गया। लाला देवराज ने सोचा क्यों ना इस पाठशाला को महाविद्यालय में तब्दील किया जाए। सन् 1892 लाला तेलूराम जी ने इस रिर्पोट में कहा कि ‘लोगों ! हम इस से कही आगे बढ़ना चाहते है, क्योंकि हम जानते है कि अधुरी शिक्षा,हमारे जीवन में आर्यस्व संचारित कर सकती है। इस बात को विचार कर जालन्धर समाज कन्या महाविद्यालय कायम करना चाहता है। और कायम हो भी जाएगा तुम सुनो, कि विरोधों के भयंकर बवण्ड़र आने पर भी हम स्त्री शिक्षा की नौका पार ले जावेगे। इस स्कूल का पाठयक्रम आधुनिक प्रणाली का था। इस कालेज में संस्कृत, आर्यभाषा अंग्रेजी,गणित इतिहास भूगोल और धर्मशिक्षा पढाई जाती थी। इसके आलाव संगीत और सिलाई कढाई की शिक्षा दी जाती थी। जिस से विद्यालय में पढ़ने वाली लड़कियों की सम्पूर्ण विकास हो सके । इस कालेज में कन्याओं के रहने के लिए छात्रावास की सुविधा भी थी। इतना ही नहीं इस स्कूल में एक अनाथालय और एक विधवा भवन भी बनाया गया था।
क्रास्थवेट गर्ल्स कालेज, प्रयाग का स्त्री शिक्षा में बड़ा योगदान है। इस स्कूल का इतिहास भी बड़ा दिलचस्प है। सन् 1895 में राज जैकृष्णदास ने एसोसिएशन फार दि हायर एजुकेशन आफ वुमेन की स्थापना की। इसके तहत लखनऊ में कन्या पाठशाला स्कूल खोला गया। कई कारणों से यह स्कूल चल नहीं सका। इसके बाद यह तय हुआ कि इस स्कूल को लखनऊ से हटाकर प्रयाग ले जाया जाए। लखनऊ से ले जाकर प्रयाग के महजानी टोले में इस विद्यालय को स्थापित किया। वह भी ठीक ढंग से नहीं चल सका। इसके बाद स्थाई रुप से सन 1906 में महाजनी टोले से इस कालेज को हटाकर स्थाई रुप से क्रास्थवेट गल्र्स हाई स्कूल के नाम से मुट्ठी्रगंज में स्थापित किया गया।
अब क्रास्थवेट गल्र्स स्कूल अपनी उन्नति की ओर अग्रसर होने लगा। सन 1916 में एक महत्पूर्ण घाटना घटी। इस कालेज की प्रमुख अध्यापिका मिस चैटर्जी बी. ए. छुट्टी लेकर चली गई। इनके जाने के बाद प्रिंसिपल के पद पर श्रीमती सोकरी बाई मानकर को नियुक्त किया गया। सोकरी बाई के आने से यह स्कूल पहले से अधिक उन्नति करने लगा। अनके प्रयास से स्कूल में कन्याओं के रहने के लिए एक छात्रावास भी खुल गया। छात्रावास स्थापित करने में सर सुन्दर लाल ने काफी मदद की थी। अब इस कालेज में पढ़ने के लिए लड़कियां लाहौर और कश्मीर से भी आने लगी थी। बाई मानकर ने एक और बड़ा काम किया, इस स्कूल में नर्सिग की भी क्लास खोल दी। मानकर बाई जब तक रही यह स्कूल लगातार उन्नति करता रहा। अचानक एक दिन मानकरबाई का देहान्त हो गया। उनके देहान्त से कालेज को बड़ा धक्का लगा। इनके देहान्त के बाद स्त्री शिक्षा की समर्थक और विद्वान मिस कृष्णा बाई तुलास्कर को प्रिंसिपल के पद पर नियुक्त किया। मिस कृष्णा बाई तुलास्कर खुले विचारों की महिला था। इन्होंने अमेरिका से अपनी शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी। इनके आने से पहले स्कूल मे केवल मैट्रिक तक ही पढ़ाई होती थी। मिस तुलास्कर ने मैट्रिक से आगे बढ़कर एम.ए. तक की पढ़ाई का प्रबन्ध कर दिया। इतना ही नहीं स्कूल मे अध्यापिकाओं की भी नियुक्त की। इसका प्रभाव यह हुआ कि दूर दराज से भी लड़कियां पढ़ने आने लगी। मिस तुलास्कर गांधीवादी विचार धारा की प्रबल समर्थक थी। इसी लिए उन्होंने कालेज की छात्राओं में स्वदेश प्रेम का भी खूब प्रचार प्रसार किया। जब गांधी जी ने असहयोग आन्दोलन किया तो मिस तुलास्कर प्रिंसिपल के पद से त्याग देकर असहयोग आन्दोलन में सामिल हो गई।
मिस तुलास्कर के असहयोग आन्दोलन मे सामिल हो जाने के बाद मिस नायक को बतौर प्रिंसिपल के पद पर नियुक्त किया गया। मिस नायक भी बहुत योग्य अध्यापिका थी। स्त्री शिक्षा पर इनका विशेष ध्यान था। वे चाहती थी कि प्रत्येक दृष्टि से छात्राएं मजबूत होकर यहां से निकले । इसीलिए छात्राओं को उन्होंने वाद- विवाद प्रयोगिता के लिए तैयार किया। सन 1922 में आयोजित वाद- विवाद प्रयोगिता इस कालेज की छात्राओं ने कई पदक जीते। इस कालेज मे पढ़ने वाली छात्राओं में श्रीमती चन्द्रावती त्रिपाठी जो अपने समय की लेखिका थी। इनके लेख मनोरमा पत्रिका में प्रमुखतं से छापते थे। श्रीमती राजदुलारी वर्मा ने जिन्होने वाद- विवाद प्रतियोगता में हरिपद घोष नामक पदक जीता था। श्रीमती चन्द्रावती लखनपाल भी इसी कालेज की छात्रा थी। यह अपने समय की महत्वपूर्ण लेखिका थी। जिन्होने स्त्रियों की समस्याओं को लेकर कई किताबे भी लिखी है। इतना ही नही मियो की किताब ‘मदर इन्डिया’ के जावाब देते हुए एक महत्वपूर्ण पुस्तक लिखी थी।
अब बात विक्टोरिया कन्या महाविद्यालय की जाए। यह विद्यालय महारानी विक्टोरिया की याद में सम्भवता 1906 में खोला गया था। यह विद्यालय पंजाब की कन्याओं के लिए किसी रोशनी से कम नही था। इस कालेज की प्रिंसिपल हेमन्त कुमारी देवी थी। हेमन्त कुमारी देवी स्त्री शिक्षा की प्रबल समर्थक थी। इन्ही के प्रयास से पंजाब से स्त्री शिक्षा का प्रचार प्रसार हुआ। यह हिन्दी के प्रसिद्ध लेखक नवीनचंद्र राय की बेटी थी। इनका जन्म सन 1868 लाहौर में हुआ था। इन्होंने सन 1888 में सुगृहिणाी नाम की हिन्दी भाषा में एक मासिक पत्रिका भी निकाली। इस पत्रिका के द्वारा इन्होंने स्त्री शिक्षा और हिन्दी भाषा का खूब प्रचार प्रसार कर योगदान दिया। यह वही दौर था जब लोग कन्याओं को पढ़ना उचित नहीं समझते थे। ऐसे समय में जब वे विक्टोरिया कालेज की प्रिंसिपल बनी तो वे घर- घर जाकर अभिवाकों के स्त्री शिक्षा के सम्बन्ध में जागरुक कर कन्याओं को स्कूल भेजने के लिए राजी किया। यह उनका बड़ा योगदान माना जायगा कि स्त्री शिक्षा को लेकर जो भ्रम फैलाय जा रहे थे, उनको दूर करने का काम किया। कुछ लोगों के मन में यह भ्रम बैठ गया था कि स्त्रियां पढ़ लिखकर कहीं बिगड़ ना जाए। हेमन्त कुमारी देवी ने इस बात का खण्ड़न किया कि पढ़ाने से स्त्रिया बिगड़ेगी नहीं बाल्कि एक जागरुक और जिम्मेदार नागरिक के रुप में हमारे सामने आएगी। हेमन्त कुमारी जब इस कालेज की प्रिंसिपल बनी तो उस समय स्कूल में बहुत कम कन्या पढ़ती थी। इनके अथक प्रयास के बाद में धीरे धीरे कालेज मे छात्राओं की संख्या बढ गई। इस कालेज में पहले मैट्रिक तक पढाई होती थी। इस स्कूल में हिन्दी, संस्कृत, अंग्रजी गणित के आलवा सिलाई बुनाई की भी पढ़ाई कराई जाती थी। ताकि कन्याएं स्कूल से पढ़ाई कर के निकले तो उन्हे बाहर जाकर कुछ रोजगार मिल सके। यहां की छात्राओं को ध्यान में रख विद्यालय में एक पुस्तकालय भी खोला गया। इतना ही नहीं विद्यालय के विकास के लिए यहां की अध्यापिकाए आर्थिक सहयोग भी करती थी। उस समय इस स्कूल में पांच सौ लड़किया पढ़ती थी। जो आपने आप में स्कूल की बड़ी उपलब्धी थी।
इन स्कूलों से पढ लिखकर निकालने वाली स्त्रियां स्त्री शिक्षा की मशाल अपने हाथों मे लेकर निकली, और स्त्री स्वतंत्रता की बात कर पितृसत्ता पर भी कुठाराघात किया । इसलिए ये कालेज स्त्री शिक्षा की यात्रा में मील के पत्थर माने जा सकते। कल्पना करिए कि जब यह स्कूल खोले गये होगे तब दकियानूसी विचारधारा के लोगों ने कितना विरोध किया होगा। इसमें पढ़ाने वाली अध्यापिकाओं को किन किन मानसिक पीड़ा और यातनाओं से गुजरना पड़ा होगा। यह तमाम सुधारकों के संघर्ष का परिणाम है कि आज स्त्री शिक्षा बृहद रुप में हमारे सामने है। इसलिए स्त्री इतिहास में इन स्कूलों के योगदान को किसी भी दृष्टि से कम नहीं माना जा सकता है।
