रात भर तेज़ बारिश हुई थी। आँगन में, लान में, छत पर हर जगह पानी ही दिख रहा था। उसे हैरानी हो रही थी कि उसकी नींद कैसे नहीं टूटी आवाज़ से, उसकी नींद तो बड़ी हल्की है, ज़रा से खटपट से टूट जाती है। फ्रीज़ खुलने की आवाज़ से, लाइट ऑन-ऑफ होने से, यहाँ तक कि कभी कभी अदिति के करवट लेने भर से ही। फिर कल रात इतनी गहरी, गाढ़ी नींद कैसे आयी। नींद की गोली से, नहीं वो तो हर रोज़ ही लेता रहा है पिछले कुछ सालों से। याद करने की कोशिश करता रहा कि कल उसने डिनर में क्या खाया था। बस खीर ध्यान में आयी, अच्छा तो ये इतनी गहरी नींद खीर खाने की वजह से आयी। उसे हँसी आ गयी खुद पर, क्या बच्चों सी बातें सोच रहा है। ब्रश करते हुए पूरे घर में घूम रहा था और सोच रहा था कि अदिति क्यों नहीं जगी अबतक। रोज़ उसके जगने से पहले अदिति जाग चुकी होती थी और कभी किचन में नाश्ता बनाती, कभी बच्चों को तैयार करती दिख जाती थी। लिविंग रूम की दीवाल घड़ी पर नज़र गयी तो पता चला 5:30 ही बजे हैं। उसे हैरानी हो आयी। रोज़ अदिति उसे कितनी आवाज़ देकर जगाती थी फिर भी उठते-उठते 7 बज ही जाते थे। उसने बच्चों के कमरे में झांक कर देखा, दोनों बहनें आराम से सो रही थीं। थोड़ी देर वही खड़े-खड़े उनको देखता रहा, कितना समय बीत गया कितनी जल्दी। बच्चे कब इतने बड़े हो गए। बिना आवाज़ किये बाहर चला आया वो। किचन में पहुँचकर चाय बनाने लगा तो याद आया की जाने कितने बरस बीत गए, उसने कभी कुछ बनाया ही नहीं। आज आखिर हुआ क्या है, रोज़ की तरह सर भी भारी नहीं लग रहा और नींद भी अच्छी आयी। अदिति क लिएे चाय लेकर कमरे में आया तो वह कुनमुना रही थी। नींद से उठते हुए उसको देखता रहा वो। अदिति की उसपर नज़र पड़ी तो चौंक उठी।
-तुम! आज इतनी जल्दी? ठीक तो हो ना? ब्लड प्रेशर तो नहीं बढ़ गया ना?
-अरे, मैं बिलकुल ठीक हूँ। बस नींद जल्दी खुल गयी। तबियत भी ठीक। रोज़ की तरह सरदर्द भी नहीं हो रहा।
-चाय! तुमने चाय भी बनाई! क्या बात है आकाश, जाने कितने समय बाद तुम्हारे हाथ की चाय नसीब हुई। अदिति की आवाज़ में ख़ुशी और हैरानी के साथ बरसों की शिकायत की झलक भी थी।
तभी बेल की आवाज़ हुई और अदिति उठती हुई बोली लगता है बाई आ गयी। तुम चाय पियो मैं दरवाज़ा खोलता हूँ, कहता हुआ आकाश दरवाज़े की तरफ बढ़ा। बाई के चेहरे पर भी उसे देखकर हैरानी आ गयी।
अदिति उठकर रोज़ के तरह किचन और बच्चों को स्कूल भेजने की तैयारी में लग गयी और वह बच्चों को उठाने उनके कमरे में आ गया।
-सोने दो ना मम्मी, बस पाँच मिनट और
बड़ी बेटी बोलती हुई मुँह तकिये में छिपाने लगी।
-मम्मी, मुझे आज स्कूल नहीं जाना
छोटी बेटी नींद में ही बिसूरते हुए बोली। आकाश दोनों बच्चियों को देखकर मुस्कुराया। ये कब इतनी बड़ी हो गईं। बड़ी आठ साल की और छोटी पाँच साल की। उसने दोनों का माथा प्यार से सहलाया और चूम लिया।
-अब उठ जाओ, देर होगी तो मम्मी डाँटेगी।
उसकी आवाज़ सुन दोनों की नींद खुल गयी। दोनों बेटियों की आँखों में उसे देखके ख़ुशी भी थी और हैरानी भी।
-पापा! आप हमसे पहले उठ गए।
-पापा, आप हमारे हमारे में आये
छोटी बेटी चहकती हुई बोली
आकाश को जवाब न सूझा तो बोल उठा
-आज जल्दी उठ गया तो गुड मॉर्निंग कहने आ गया।
– गुड मॉर्निंग पापा, दोनों बच्चियाँ चहकती हुई बोलीं। तभी अदिति आ गयी और दोनों को बाहर ले गयी।
आकाश अपनी स्टडी में न्यूज़पेपर पढ़ने लगा और अपने ईमेल्स भी चेक करने लगा। हॉल से बच्चों और अदिति की बातचीत की आवाज़ आ रही थी।
-मम्मी, आज पेरेंट्स मीटिंग है आपको याद है न!
-हाँ मौली! याद है। तुम्हारा साइंस प्रोजेक्ट कब तक सबमिट करना है?
-मम्मी, 3 दिन के अंदर।
-ठीक है, आज स्कूल से आकर बना लेना, मैं सामान लेती आउंगी।
-मम्मी, पापा भी आएंगे क्या पेरेंट्स मीटिंग में?
छोटी बेटी ध्वनि ने हिचकते हुए पूछा
-नहीं बेटा, पापा को काम होगा।
अख़बार के पन्ने पलटते हुए आकाश के हाथ रुक गए। उसे याद आया कि वो आजतक किसी पेरेंट्स मीटिंग में नहीं गया। न बच्चों के होमवर्क, न प्रोजेक्ट्स किसी काम में कोई मदद नहीं की कभी। न उनकी बीमारी में कभी बैठा उनके पास। सबकुछ अकेली अदिति करती आ रही है। बिना किसी शिकायत के, चुपचाप। और बच्चे भी उसकी उपेक्षा और काम में डूबे रहने को उसकी व्यस्तता समझते रहे। उसकी आँखों के आगे सब घूम गया। आकाश सोचने लगा कि आखिर उसके ये बरस कहाँ चले गये। जवाब भी अंदर से ही आ गयी कि उसने खुद खोये हैं ये साल। अपना गुस्सा, अपनी कुंठा उसने उपेक्षा बनाकर अदिति और बच्चों पर निकाली है। उसे अपनेआप पर गुस्सा, ग्लानि और दया तीनों आ रही थी। सालोंसाल उसने चुप्पी ओढ़े हुए और खुद को काम में डुबाकर निकाल दिए हैं। बच्चे तैयार हुए, उनकी स्कूल बस आयी और वे चले गए। आकाश वहीँ बैठकर जीवन की बीती घटनाओं का लेखा-जोखा निकालता रहा। अदिति ने आकर पर्दे खींचे और लाइट बन्द की और पूछा
-यहाँ क्यों बैठे हो? ऑफिस नहीं जाना क्या?
-सोच रहा हूं कि आज न जाऊं।
-अरे, ऐसे नहीं जाओगे तो दिक्कत नहीं होगी क्या
बुखार में भी ऑफिस जानेवाला आकाश आज यूँ ही बिना बात छुट्टी कर रहा है, अदिति को अजीब लग रहा था। डरते-डरते कुछ सोचकर उसने पूछ ही लिया।
-बात क्या है आकाश? कल तुम ऑफिस से बहुत देर से आये थे और बहुत पीकर आये थे। तुम्हारे साथ तरुण भैया भी थे। सब ठीक तो है न?
हमेशा की तरह जवाब में चुप्पी या झिड़की की जगह आकाश ने आश्चर्य से उल्टा पूछा
-तरुण! तरुण मेरे साथ आया था, लेकिन वो तो मुझे ऑफिस के बाद मिला था और फिर वापिस होटल चला गया था।
अब उसे सबकुछ ध्यान आया। कल ऑफिस में ही था, जब तरुण का मैसेज आया था कि उसने घर से उसका नंबर लिया है और बात करना चाहता है। कुछ काम से उसके शहर आया हुआ था। तरुण, उसके बचपन का साथी और जवानी के दिनों का जिगरी। वही तरुण जिससे उसने बारह साल बात नहीं की। उसकी शादी से कुछ पहले ही तरुण अमेरिका चला गया था। तो ये अब अचानक। उसने मैसेज का रिप्लाई कर दिया की उसे फ़ुरसत नहीं है। ऑफिस से निकलते समय तरुण की आवाज़ ने उसे चौंका दिया।
-कैसा है यार!
अपनी आँखों के सामने उसे देखकर आकाश खुद पर काबू नहीं कर सका और उसके गले लग गया। बारह सालों का गुस्सा, अबोला सब उस एक पल में बह गया।
-तू बिलकुल नहीं बदला तरुण! जैसा गया था अब भी वैसा ही हैं।
-तू बहुत बदल गया आकाश! उसे गौर से देखते हुए तरुण बोला। आँखों पर चढ़ा नम्बर वाला चश्मा, ग्रे सूट और खिचड़ी बालों में आकाश उम्र से भी बड़ा लग रहा था।
-कैसा है सब! बाबूजी बताते रहते थे तेरे बारे में।
तरुण उसके माँ-बाबूजी से भी बेहद अपनत्व रखता था और वे भी उसे अपना बच्चा ही समझते थे।
-अच्छा हूँ मैं! अमेरिका से इसी महीने वापिस आया हूँ। अब नहीं जाऊंगा। माँ-पापा की उम्र हो गयी है अब उनसे दूर नहीं रहा जाता। और निशा भी अपने देश को बहुत मिस करती है।
-जया से बात होती है?
तरुण के इस सवाल ने आकाश को बारह साल पहले के भोपाल में जा पटका। जया चौधुरी और आकाश तिवारी। पढ़ाकू बंगाली जया और मस्तमौला मलंग आकाश। मुँहफट और बेबाक आकाश और शर्मीली सौम्य जया। शिउली फूल जैसी सुंदर जया। दोनों की जोड़ी कॉलेज की हर एक्टिविटी में पार्टिसिपेट करती और बहुत पॉपुलर भी थी। हर कोई उन्हें रश्क़ से देखता था। दोनों ही अच्छे परिवार से आते थे और उन्हें उम्मीद भी थी कि शादी के लिए भी पेरेंट्स मान जायेंगे। थोड़ा-बहुत दोनों ने बता भी रखा था। वैसे भी आखिरी सेमेस्टर था और प्लेसमेंट के शोर-शराबे में ये बातें दब गयीं थी। आख़िरकार आकाश की अच्छी कम्पनी में प्लेसमेंट हो गयी और जया रिसर्च के लिए अच्छी यूनिवर्सिटी का पता करने में लग गयी। उसके पिता डॉक्टर शिरीष चौधुरी चाहते थे जया पहले पीएचडी कर ले उसके बाद नौकरी करे। आकाश के माँ-बाबूजी उसके और तरुण के बहुत समझाने से मान से गये थे लेकिन मन ही मन उन्हें लग रहा था कि जया उनके परिवार और रिश्ते-नातों में रच-बस पायेगी क्या। आकाश की माँ अक्सर उसके बाबूजी को कहती और सब तो मैं सह लूंगी लेकिन मांस-मच्छी खाना तो इस घर में नहीं चलेगा। आकाश के बाबूजी हँसकर कहते -कोई बात नहीं, उनका किचन अलग कर देना।
-अरे, लोग क्या कहेंगे कि नई बहू के आते ही चूल्हा अलग कर दिया।
-लोगों को इतनी फ़ुरसत है क्या कि दूसरों के घरों में झाँकते रहें!
-लोगों को तो मौका चाहिए बस.. मुझे तो घबराहट हो रही है कि शादी में नाते-रिश्तेदार कोई झँझट न खड़ी कर दें।
-आकाश की ख़ुशी से बढ़कर ये सब नहीं है। और थोड़ा-बहुत तो हर शादी में होता रहता है।
आकाश में माँ-बाबूजी तो मान गए थे लेकिन जया के माँ-बाबा मान ही नहीं रहे थे। जया के भाई ने भी अपनी पसंद से शादी की थी लेकिन वो लड़की उनके परिवार में एडजस्ट नहीं हो सकी थी और कम ही आती जाती थी। ईधर उनदोनों की आपस में भी नहीं बन रही थी और बात शादी टूटने तक पहुँच गयी थी।डॉक्टर चौधुरी को आधुनिक होने के बावजूद लगने लगा था कि अगर उनके लड़के ने अपनी जाति में शादी की होती तो सुखी रहता। जया बहुत टेंशन में रहती, उसकी इस मुद्दे पर अपने बाबा से एकाध बार बहस भी हो गयी, जो वो खुद नहीं चाहती थी। उसके बाबा की भी तबियत कुछ ठीक नहीं चल रही थी। एक दिन उनका हाल-चाल पूछने और उनको इसी बहाने समझाने भी बाबूजी और तरुण जया के घर गए। उनलोगों ने अपने भर उन्हें समझाने की बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन बात कुछ बनती नहीं दिखी। उसी रात जया का फोन आया कि उनकी तबियत अचानक बिगड़ गयी है और उनको हॉस्पिटल में एडमिट करवाया जा रहा है। सबलोग वहाँ पहुँच गये, ब्लड प्रेशर बहुत बढ़ जाने के कारण उनको ब्रेन-हेमरेज हो गया था और बहुत कोशिश के बाद भी उनको बचाया नहीं जा सका। जया की माँ तो रोते-रोते बेसुध हो गयी थी। जया का भी हाल बहुत बुरा था। उसका भाई और बाकी रिश्तेदार भी सुबह होते-होते पहुँचने लगे थे। संस्कार के बाद सबलोग कलकत्ता चले गए। इस बीच जया से आकाश की बात ही नहीं हो पाई। करीब महीने भर बाद आई जया यहाँ का घर खाली करने और अपने बाबा के कॉलेज में कागज-पत्तर जमा करने। आकाश को जैसे ही पता चला वो मिलने पहुंचा लेकिन जया ने ठीक से बात नहीं की। जाने से पहले उसने तरुण के हाथ चिट्ठी भिजवा दी।
आकाश,
मुझे स्कालरशिप मिल गयी है। मैं कुछ दिनों में पीएचडी के लिए बाहर चली जाऊंगी। मेरी माँ को लगता है कि तरुण और तुम्हारे पापा उसदिन घर नहीं आये होते और पापा को टेंशन न हुआ होता तो वे इस तरह अचानक जाते नहीं। मैं अपनी माँ को दुःखी करके तुमसे शादी नहीं कर सकती। तुम अपना ध्यान रखना।
और मुझे कॉन्टैक्ट करने की कोशिश मत करना, कोई फ़ायदा नहीं होगा।

जया।
आकाश की तो दुनिया ही बदल गयी। हँसमुख और मस्तमौला आकाश चुप रहने लगा। मन ही मन वो अपने बाबूजी और तरुण को इन सबके लिए दोषी समझता था। तरुण ने उसे समझाने की बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन आकाश समझता ही नहीं था। तरुण जया से मिलने कलकत्ता भी गया लेकिन उसके भाई ने मना कर दिया। 5 साल के प्यार का ऐसा अंत होगा आकाश बरदाश्त नहीं कर पा रहा था। बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन जया से कोई सम्पर्क नहीं हो पाया।
आकाश ने दूसरे शहर में ट्रांसफर करवा लिया। ऑफिस से आता और चुपचाप घर में पड़ा रहता। न किसी से बातचीत न कहीं आना-जाना। माँ से कभी-कभी बात कर लेता। तरुण ने बहुत कोशिश की उससे बात करने की लेकिन उसने उसे साफ़ मना कर दिया। 2 साल ऐसे ही बीत गए। माँ उसे हर रोज़ उसे शादी के लिए कहती एकदिन उसने बेमन से हाँ कर दी। बेमन से शादी हुई, अदिति उसकी जिंदगी में आ गयी। आकाश ने उसे कभी स्वीकार ही नहीं किया पूरे मन से। शुरू में अदिति को बहुत चुभता था उसका व्यवहार लेकिन धीरे-धीरे आदत पर गयी। समय बीता, मौली का जन्म हुआ तो अदिति की लगा कि शायद आकाश में कोई परिवर्तन आये लेकिन आकाश वैसा ही रहा। काम में डूबा रहता, बस जितनी जरूरत हो उतना ही बोलता। बाबूजी से अब भी बहुत काम बात करता था। अदिति ने सबकुछ संभाल लिया था, बच्चों की जिम्मेदारी, घर और सब रिश्ते-नाते भी। तीज-त्यौहार में बच्चों के साथ माँ-बाबूजी से मिल आती। उसका बहुत मन होता था कि वे लोग भी यहाँ आयें और साथ रहें। एक दो बार आकाश से पूछा भी उसकी झिड़की सुनकर फिर हिम्मत नहीं की।
तरुण की आवाज़ उसे लौटा लायी वर्तमान में। तेरी बेटियाँ बहुत प्यारी हैं, मैंने उनकी फोटो देखी भोपाल गया था तब। बोल ना, जया से बात होती है?
-नहीं तरुण, कोशिश की थी लेकिन वो नहीं चाहती थी तो..
-मेरी बात होती है कभी-कभी। खुश है वो पीएचडी पूरी करके जॉब कर रही है। वहीँ शादी भी कर ली उसने। उसकी माँ भी साथ ही रहती है।
-अच्छा…
-तू बात करेगा? बोल, बात करेगा तो अभी करवाऊं?
-नहीं तरुण.. बात नहीं कर पाऊंगा अभी.. नंबर देदे कभी कर लूँगा।
-ठीक है। ये मैंने तुझे भेज दिया उसका कॉन्टैक्ट। बात कर लेना जब मन हो।
-तू घर आ ना तरुण कभी। कितना समय बीत गया।
-आऊंगा, इस बार नहीं अगली बार, निशा और बेटे के साथ आऊँगा।
-चल तुझे छोड़ दूँ होटल तक, कहाँ रुका हुआ है तू?
-यहीं, रीजेंट में।
दोनों रास्ते भर बात करते रहे। सालों की इकट्ठा बातें। जाने कितनी और क्या-क्या। होटल पहुँचकर तरुण में कहा।
-आजा यार! सालों बाद मिले हैं। एक-एक ड्रिंक तो हो जाये।
दोनों बार में जा बैठे। दो पैग पीकर तरुण को कोई जरूरी फोन आ गया तो वो अपने कमरे में चला गया। आकाश ने जाने क्या सोचकर तरुण का दिया हुआ नंबर मिला दिया। कुछ रिंग्स के बाद किसी ने फोन उठा लिया।
-हेलो! कौन?
फोन पर जया ही थी। आवाज़ थोड़ी भारी सी लग रही थी लेकिन जया ही थी। उसकी आवाज़ तो वो शोर में भी पहचान सकता था।
-हेलो, कौन है? बोलो भी
-जया, मैं आकाश। आकाश तिवारी। तरुण ने नम्बर दिया तुम्हारा।
कुछ सेकण्ड्स की चुप्पी के बाद उसकी आवाज़ में ख़ुशी कौंधी।
-आकाश, कैसे हो तुम? तरुण से मिली थी, उसने बताया था तुम्हारे बारे में। अच्छे हो न.. बच्चे कैसे हैं और माँ-बाबूजी।
-सब ठीक है, तुम कैसी हो?
अपनी आवाज़ की बेचैनी छिपाता हुआ आकाश बोला।
-मैं खुश हूँ, पीएचडी पूरी की फिर यही जॉब मिल गयी।माँ भी यहीं मेरे पास हैं।
-शादी?
-हाँ, शादी भी हो गयी। चार साल हुए, मेरे साथ रिसर्च कर रहा था। अमेरिकन है। अच्छा, अभी रखती हूं, मुझे काम है कुछ। यूनिवर्सिटी भी जाना है।
-ओह हाँ। ठीक है। टाइम-जोन का अंतर ध्यान आया उसे।
-और हाँ आकाश, सॉरी। पापा की डेथ के बाद घर का माहौल अजीब हो गया था। उनकी डेथ की वजह माँ ने तरुण और बाबूजी को समझ लिया था और उस समय दुःख में मैंने भी गलत व्यवहार किया। उन्हें सालों से ब्लडप्रेशर और हाइपरटेंशन था। उनकी डेथ कोई हादसा नहीं थी। उन्हें ऐसे ही जाना था शायद।
उसने फोन रखते हुए बोला था। और आकाश के माथे पर रखा हुआ बोझ जैसे उतर गया था। सालों से मन में दबी गाँठ जैसे पिघल गयी थी। जया कितने सहज भाव से कह गयी और उसने क्या किया था? बाबूजी का चेहरा उसके सामने घूम गया। अदिति और बच्चों के साथ उसने क्या किया। गुस्सा, ग्लानि, अपराधबोध उसकी आँखों से बहता रहा। तरुण अपने फोन कॉल्स निपटाकर जब आया तो आकाश काफी पी चुका था। उसके फोन से नंबर लेकर उसने अदिति को फोन किया और रास्ता पूछा। उसे घर छोड़कर फिर आने का कहकर चला गया।
आकाश को अब समझ में आ रहा था उसका मन हल्का क्यों था, सालों बाद उसे अच्छी नींद कैसे आ गयी थी। गुजरे हुए साल उसकी आँखों के आगे घूम रहे थे। अपने बच्चों और अदिति को उसने कभी वह प्यार नहीं दिया, जिसके वे हकदार थे। उसने मन ही मन प्रण किया कि जितना हो सकेगा वो उससे ज्यादा करेगा उनके लिए। और बाबूजी, उन्हें भी तो इतने बरस उसने खुद से दूर रखा, उपेक्षित रखा। अदिति की आवाज़ से उसका सोचना रुका
-आकाश, ऑफिस नहीं जाना? तुम अबतक यहीं बैठे हो?
बुखार में भी ऑफिस जाने वाला आकाश आज घर में क्यों है, अदिति को समझ में नहीं आ रहा था।
-मैंने एक हफ्ते की छुट्टी लेली है अदिति। चलो कल माँ-बाबूजी से मिल आयें और उनको साथ ही लेते आएं उधर से। और तुम भी तैयार हो जाओ, बच्चों के स्कूल भी चलना है पेरेंट्स मीटिंग के लिए।
अदिति को समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि वो जोर से हँसे, कुछ पूछे या फूट-फूट के रोये। खुद को संयत कर बाथरूम की तरफ आयी तो उसके चेहरे पर एक सुकून भरी मुस्कान थी। उसके हिस्से का आकाश आज सारा आकाश बन गया था।
