 आज मूर्धन्य चित्रकार रामकुमार का निधन हो गया. 94 साल की भरपूर जिंदगी जीकर जाने वाले रामकुमार बहुत अच्छे कथाकार भी थे. वे हिंदी के महान लेखक निर्मल वर्मा के बड़े भाई थे. उनके अनेक समकालीन लेखक यह मानते थे कि निर्मल जी रामकुमार की परम्परा के लेखक थे. रामकुमार बाद में पेरिस चले गए और उन्होंने लेखन छोड़ दिया लेकिन उनके चित्रों की उदास रंगत वही थी जैसी निर्मल जी की कहानियों की. उनकी सम्पूर्ण कहानियां रेमाधव प्रकाशन से प्रकाशित हुई थी. लेकिन ऑनलाइन उनकी यही एक कहानी उपलब्ध हुई. उनको श्रद्धांजलि के साथ- मॉडरेटर

फाटक पार करते ही जिस ओर सबसे पहले हमारा ध्यान गया, वे थे पेड़ों पर लटकते हुए अलूचों से मिलते-जुलते किसी फल के गुच्छे। मकान के भीतर घुसने के बदले हम उस ओर दौड़े। कई पेड़ थे जिन पर वे लटक रहे थे। परंतु उछल-उछल कर कूदने पर भी किसी के हाथ में एक भी दाना नहीं आ सका। मैं सबसे लंबा था, लेकिन मेरा हाथ भी उन्हें छूते-छूते रह जाता। हमारा शोर सुन कर बड़ी बहन भीतर से आईं।’यह तोड़ दीजिए, न जाने कौन-सा फल है! शायद अलूचे या आलूबुखारा या खूबानी…’ हम सब चिल्लाने लगे।बहन धीमी चाल से हमारी ओर आने लगीं। हमें क्रोध आया कि वे ऐसे मौके पर भाग कर क्यों नहीं आतीं। लेकिन भय था कि कहीं उनसे जल्दी आने के लिए कहें तो वे वापस न लौट जाएँ।’क्या हैं ये…।’ उन्होंने ऊपर पेड़ की ओर देखते हुए कहा। ‘शायद अलूचे ही हैं। तोड़ दीजिए जल्दी।’ ‘कोई जंगली फल है शायद?’ वे बोलीं। ‘नहीं-नहीं जंगली नहीं है,’ हम चिल्लाए, ‘एक तोड़ कर मुझे दीजिए…’ हमारी ओर बिना ध्यान दिए वे ऊपर लटकते गुच्छों को देख रही थीं, फिर एक दाना तोड़ा और उसे घुमा-फिरा कर देखती रहीं। ‘पता नहीं क्या है? ऐसा फल तो कभी किसी पहाड़ पर देखा नहीं।’ हम उनके आस-पास एक दायरा बना कर खड़े हो गए थे और अब उस एक दाने को लेने के लिए छीना-झपटी करने लगे। ‘नहीं, यह खाना नहीं होगा। कौन जानता है, इसमें जहर हो! पहले माली से पूछेंगे।’ फिर मेरी ओर देख कर बोलीं, ‘सुनो, कोई नहीं तोड़ेगा इन्हें!’ यह कह कर वे फिर धीमी चाल से मकान की ओर चली गईं। उनके आदेश का कोई विरोध नहीं कर सकता, यह सोच कर सब मन मसोस कर रह गए। लेकिन उस शाम सारे बाग में घूम-घूम कर हमने उन पेड़ों को गिना। दूसरे पेड़ भी थे लेकिन उनका महत्व नहीं के बराबर ही था। यह पहला मौका था कि किसी पहाड़ में अपने ही बाग में किसी फल के इतने पेड़ मिले हों। कभी एक-आध अलूचे, खूबानी या सेब का पेड़ मिल जाता था, या फिर करीब ही किसी दूसरे मकान में इन पेड़ों को देख कर चुपके से कभी कुछ तोड़ लेते, लेकिन इस बार अपने ही बाग में इतने पेड़… हमारे उत्साह की सीमा नहीं थी। अंदर बहन ने वह दाना पिता के सामने रख कर कहा, ‘पता नहीं कौन-सा फल है? बाग में लगा है।’ पिता उसे देखते ही बोले, ‘यह तो चेरी है, अभी पकी नहीं।’ चेरी का नाम सुनते ही हमारा उत्साह और भी बढ़ गया। हमने आज तक चेरी का पेड़ नहीं देखा था और अब अपने ही बाग में पंद्रह-बीस चेरी के पेड़ है, जिन्हें तोड़ने से कोई नहीं रोकेगा, जिन पर पूर्ण रूप से हमारा अधिकार होगा। हम उस एक विषय में इतने मग्न थे कि उस साल कमरों को ले कर झगड़ा नहीं हुआ। हर साल पहले दिन यह समस्या जब सामने आती – कौन-सा कमरा किसका होगा, तो हम आपस में झगड़ते थे, हाथापाई भी होती थी और गुस्से में पिता भी एक-आध को पीट देते थे। लेकिन इस बार बहन ने जहाँ जिसका सामान रख दिया, उसका विरोध किसी ने नहीं किया। रात को बहन हमारे कमरे में आईं, मैं एक किताब में तस्वीरें देख रहा था। ‘सोया नहीं?’ ‘नींद नहीं आई।’ मैं बोला। छोटे भाई-बहन सो गए थे। ‘मुझे भी नए घर में पहली रात को नींद नहीं आती।’ वे खिड़की के पास जा कर खड़ी हो गईं। खिड़की बंद थी लेकिन एक शीशा टूटा हुआ था जिसमें से वे बाहर झाँकने लगीं। दो महीने पूर्व जब से उनकी सगाई हुई वे बहुत चुप-चुप-सी रहने लगी थीं। अगले जाड़ों मे उनका विवाह हो जाएगा, उनके विवाह की कल्पना से ही हमारा उत्साह बढ़ जाता। लेकिन विवाह के बाद वे इस घर में नहीं रहेंगी, सोच दुख भी होता। ‘यह देखो।’ उन्होंने धीमे स्वर में कहा। ‘क्या है?’ ‘इधर आओ?’ खिड़की के दूसरे शीशे से बाहर देखा, लेकिन अँधेरे में सामनेवाले पहाड़ के अतिरिक्त और कुछ दिखाई नहीं दिया। उन्होंने धीरे से खिड़की की चिटखनी खोली और अपना सिर बाहर निकाल लिया। मैंने फिर आकाश की ओर दे, मुझे भी लगा जैसे तारे बहुत नीचे उतर आए हों। ‘पहाड़ों पर तारे नजदीक दिखाई देते हैं। हम ऊँचाई पर आ जाते हैं न, इसीलिए।’ ‘नहीं, यह बात नहीं है। पिछले साल मसूरी में वे इतने पास कभी दिखाई नहीं दिए, नैनीताल में…’ मुझे इस विषय में अधिक दिलचस्पी नहीं थी। ‘मैंने कहीं पढ़ा था कि यहाँ तारे बहुत पास दिखाई देते हैं।’ वे बोलीं। खुली खिड़की से ठंडी हवा भीतर आ रही थी। मैं अपनी चारपाई पर आ गया और लिहाफ से अपना शरीर ढँक लिया। वे कुछ देर तक खिड़की पर झुकी रहीं, फिर अपने कमरे में चली गईं। मैं फिर तस्वीरें देखने लगा। अगले दिन प्रातः उठते ही हम चेरी के पेड़ों के पास पहुँच गए। कोई किसी पेड़ के पास जा कर दूसरों को आवाज लगाता, ‘देखो, ऊपर की डाल पर चेरी कितनी पीली हो गई है।’ किस पेड़ की चेरी सबसे बड़ी हैं, किसकी छोटी इन सबकी जाँच-पड़ताल हमने तुरंत कर डाली। एक पेड़ की कुछ टहनियाँ नीचे की ओर झुकी हुई थीं, लेकिन बहुत उछलने के बावजूद हाथ उन तक नहीं पहुँचा। फिर छोटा भाई घुटनों के बल बैठा और मैं उसकी पीठ पर चढ़ कर चेरी तोड़ने लगा। केवल चार दाने ही हाथ में आए। एक-एक सबको दिया, लेकिन छोटी बहन के लिए नहीं बची। वह रोने लगी, मैंने उसे अपनी आधी चेरी देने का वायदा किया, लेकिन उसने इनकार कर दिया। वह बहन से शिकायत करेगी, यह धमकी दे कर वह रोती-रोती घर की ओर भागी। कुछ देर बाद बहन हमारे पास आईं, ‘ये कच्ची चेरी क्यों तोड़ी? इन्हें खा कर क्या बीमार पड़ना है?’ फिर मेरी ओर देख कर बोलीं, ‘अगर किसी ने अब एक भी चेरी खाई, तो उसे कड़ी सजा मिलेगी। कच्चा फल तोड़ने में पाप चढ़ता है।’ वे लौट गईं। अब बहन के मना कर देने पर किसी को फिर चेरी खाने का साहस नहीं होगा। यदि छिप कर ऐसा किया भी और बहन को पता चल गया, तो उसका क्या परिणाम निकलेगा – इसकी कल्पना से ही डर लगने लगा। वे कभी किसी को पीटती नहीं थीं, अधिक क्रोध आने पर डाँटतीं भी नहीं, उनकी सजा होती थी – कसूरवार से बोलचाल बंद। यह सजा असहनीय बन जाती थी, मार-पीट और डाँट से भी अधिक, जिससे हम सब घबराते थे। खाते समय जब साथ बैठते तो हम इसी एक विषय पर बातें करते थे। ‘अब तो गुलाबी होने लगी हैं।’ ‘ऊपर की डालियों पर तो लाल हो गई हैं।’ ‘अब दो हफ्तों तक तैयार हो जाएँगी, फिर जी भर कर खाना।’ पिता कहते। बहन कहतीं, ‘इनका बस चले तो ये कच्ची ही खा जाएँ। इस बार तो ये घर से बाहर ही नहीं निकलते। बस, चेरी-चेरी औार कोई बात ही नहीं।’ माँ को बहन के विवाह की चिंता लगी हुई थी। जब घर का काम न रहता तो पिता के साथ वे इस विषय पर कितनी ही बातें किया करती थीं। पिता एक कापी में माँ की बतलाई हुई लिस्टें लिखा करते थे – क्या सामान मँगवाना होगा, कितना गहना बनेगा, कितनी साड़ियाँ, बारात कहाँ ठहरेगी? इस चर्चा से बहन का चेहरा और भी गंभीर हो आता। हर चेरी के पेड़ के तने पर मैंने चाकू की नोक से सबके नाम लिख दिए थे। पेड़ पर जिसका नाम होगा, वही उसकी चेरी तोड़ेगा और खाएगा। सब अपने-अपने पेड़ों के नीचे खड़े हो कर अपनी चेरी की प्रशंसा करते और दूसरे पेड़ों की निंदा। हर एक का दावा रहता कि उसके पेड़ों की चेरी बहुत तेजी से पक रही है। उस दिन एक व्यक्ति हमारे बाग में आया और चेरी के पेड़ों के चक्कर लगाने लगा। हर पेड़ के पास जाता और शाखाओं को इधर-उधर हटा कर ऊपरी सिरे तक देखता, कभी एक पेड़ की चेरी तोड़ कर खाता, कभी दूसरे पेड़ की। इतना बेधड़क हो कर वह बाग में घूम रहा था जैसे यह उसी का घर हो। हम झुंड बना कर उसकी ओर देखते रहे, उसके व्यवहार पर क्रोध आ रहा था, परंतु उससे कुछ भी कहने का साहस हममें से किसी में नहीं था। अपना काम खत्म करके उसकी नजर हमारी ओर गई और वह मुस्कराने लगा जिसमें हमें उसके ऊपर के दो बड़े-बड़े पीले-से दाँत दिखाई दिए। ‘आप लोग इस बँगले मे रहते हैं?’ ‘हाँ, यह हमारा मकान है।’ मैने साहस से कहा। पिता से मिलने की इच्छा प्रकट करने पर हम उसे पितावाले कमरे में ले गए। हमें उसके चेहरे से घृणा हो रही थी और यह जानने का कौतूहल भी था कि वह कौन है। उसके जाने के बाद हम पिता के पास गए। ‘यह ठेकेदार था जिसने चेरी के पेड़ मकान-मालिक से खरीद लिए हैं। कल से उसका आदमी इन पेड़ों की रखवाली करेगा।’ पिता बोले। हम में से कोई उस ठेके की बात समझा, कोई समझ नहीं सका। ‘हम तो समझ रहे थे कि ये हमारे पेड़ हैं, हमारे बाग के अंदर हैं, कोई दूसरा उन्हें कैसे खरीद सकता है।’ मैं बोला। पिता हँसने लगे, ‘हमने मकान किराए पर लिया है। पेड़ों पर मकान-मालिक का ही हक रहता है।’ ‘अब हम चेरी नहीं तोड़ सकते हैं?’ ‘चेरी ठेकेदार की हैं, हम कैसे तोड़ सकते हैं?’ उस रात को हममें से किसी ने भी चेरी के विषय मे एक भी शब्द नहीं कहा। किसी ने भूले से कुछ कहा तो सबको चुप देख कर उसे अपनी गलती का तुरंत अहसास हो गया। मुझे बहुत देर तक नींद नहीं आई। खिड़की से बाहर बाग की ओर देखा, चेरी के छोटे-छोटे पेड़ भार से झुके हुए सोए जान पड़े। जिन पर कल हम अपना अधिकार समझते थे, वे अब अपने नहीं जान पड़े। मैं बहन से इस विषय में और भी कई बातें पूछना चाहता था, परंतु वे उस रात हमारे कमरे में नहीं आर्इं। अगले दिन सुबह ठेकेदार के साथ एक बूढ़ा भी आया। वे अपने साथ रस्सियों के ढेर, टूटे हुए पुराने कनस्तर और बाँस की चटाइयाँ लाए। बाग के दूसरे सिरे पर चटाइयों से उन दोनों ने एक झोंपड़ी के भीतर एक दरी बिछाई, एक कोने में बूढ़े ने हुक्का रख दिया। हम थोड़ी दूर से सब कुछ देखते रहे। दो चटाइयों को मिला कर झोंपड़ी जितनी जल्दी तैयार हो गई, उससे हमें बहुत आश्चर्य हुआ। वे दोनों कभी-कभी हमारी ओर देख कर मुस्कराने लगते लकिन हमने उनका कोई जवाब नहीं दिया। छोटे भाई ने कहा कि हमारे शत्रु हैं और हमारी ही जमीन पर अपने खेमे गाड़ रहे हैं। कनस्तरों में छोटे-छोटे पत्थर भरे गए और रस्सियों की सहायता से उन्हें कुछ पेड़ों पर बाँध दिया गया। उन रस्सियों के सिरे झोंपड़ी के पास एक खूँटे में बाँध दिए गए। बूढ़ा रस्सी के सिरे को झटके के साथ हिलाता तो कनस्तर में पड़े पत्थर बजने लगते और एक कर्कश-सी आवाज सारे बाग में गूँज उठती। हमारा कौतूहल बढ़ता जा रहा था। कुछ देर बाद सारा प्रबंध करके ठेकेदार चला गया। रह गया वह बूढ़ा जो झोंपड़ी के पास एक पत्थर पर बैठा हुक्का गुड़गुड़ाने लगा। ठेकेदार की अपेक्षा उस बूढ़े के चेहरे पर हमें मैत्री भाव दिखाई दिया। हम धीरे-धीरे उसके पास पहुँच गए। उसने बड़े प्यार से हमें अपने पास बिठाया। हमारे पूछने पर उसने बतलाया कि ये कनस्तर परिंदों को भगाने के लिए बाँधे गए हैं, बहुत-से परिंदे – विशेषकर बुलबुल – चेरी पर चोंचें मारते हैं जिससे वह सड़ जाती है। अगर उन्हें न भगाया जाए तो पेड़-के-पेड़ खत्म हो सकते हैं। ‘लेकिन कनस्तर सब चेरी के पेड़ों पर क्यों नहीं बाँधे गए?’ ‘चार-पाँच पेड़ों के लिए एक कनस्तर की आवाज काफी है।’ वह बोला। ‘क्या तुम रात को भी यहीं सोओगे?’ ‘हाँ, रात को भी डर रहता है कि कोई आदमी चेरी न तोड़ ले।’ सबसे छोटी बहन का ध्यान हुक्के की ओर था। उसने पूछा, ‘यह क्या है?’ हम हँस पड़े। ‘यह इनकी सिगरेट है,’ छोटा भाई बोला। धीरे-धीरे बूढ़े की उपस्थिति से सब अभ्यस्त हो गए। रस्सी खींच कर कनस्तरों को बजाना, ‘हा-हू,हा-हू’ या सीटी बजा कर परिंदों को उड़ाना – इन सब आवाजों को सुनने की आदत पड़ गई। चेरी के भार से डालियाँ इतनी झुक गई थीं कि उछल कर आसानी से मैं दो-चार दाने तोड़ सकता था, परंतु बूढ़े की नजरें हर समय चौकन्नी हो कर चारों ओर घूमती रहती, इसलिए साहस नहीं होता था। माँ दूसरे-तीसरे दिन बूढ़े को चाय का गिलास भिजवा देतीं। वह भी कभी-कभी कुछ पकी हुई चेरी तोड़ कर हमें दे देता। लेकिन पेड़ पर चढ़ कर तोड़ना, फिर खाना – जिसकी हमने शुरू में कल्पना की थी, वह साध मन में ही रह गई। जब कभी कोई चिड़िया रेत पर चेरी खा रही होती और बूढ़े को पता न चलता तो हमें बहुत प्रसन्नता होती। हमारा वश चलता तो सारे पेड़ परिंदों का खिला देते। लेकिन चिड़ियाँ चुपचाप चेरी नहीं खातीं, एक-दो दाने खा कर जब वे दूसरी डाल पर उड़तीं तो बूढ़े को पता चल जाता और वह रस्सी खींच कर कनस्तर बजा देता। बहन दिन-भर किसी पेड़ के नीचे कुरसी बिछा कर हम में से किसी का पुलोवर बुनती रहतीं। इस साल गरमियों की छुटि्टयों में उन्होंने किसी किताब को हाथ तक नहीं लगाया, नहीं तो हर बार वे अपने कोर्स की कोई किताब पढ़ती रहती थीं। कुछ दिन पूर्व उनका इंटरमीडिएट का परिणाम निकला था और वे फर्स्ट डिवीजन में पास हुई थीं। वे और पढ़ना चाहती थीं परंतु माँ को उनके विवाह की जल्दी थी। हमारे घर से थोड़ी दूर एक चश्मा बहता था जहाँ हम दूसरे-तीसरे दिन नहाने चले जाते थे। कभी बाजार, कभी सिनेमा, कभी पार्क-धीरे-धीरे हमारी दिनचर्या में दूसरे आकर्षण आते गए। यह शायद पहला अवसर था कि बड़ी बहन ने किसी में भाग नहीं लिया। पहाड़ों में वे हमारे बहुत करीब आ जाती थीं। रात को खाने के बाद चारपाइयों में दुबके हम उनसे कहानियाँ सुना करते थे, शाम को सबको अपने साथ घुमाने ले जाती थीं और पिकनिकों की तो कोई गिनती ही नहीं होती थी। इस बार वे बहुत कम घर से निकलीं और जब बाहर जातीं भी तो अकेली ही जातीं। माँ की किसी बात का असर उन पर नहीं हुआ। एक दिन सुबह आँख खुलते ही बाहर बाग में कई लोगों की आवाजें सुनाई दीं। मैं चारपाई पर लेटा-लेटा कुछ दूर तक आश्चर्य से इस शोरगुल के बारे में ही सोचता रहा। खिड़की से झाँक कर बाहर देखने ही वाला था जब बहन किसी काम से कमरे में आई। ‘यह शोर कैसा है?’ मैंने पूछा। ‘वे लोग आ गए।’ ‘कौन लोग?’ मैंने आश्चर्य से पूछा। ‘वही, ठेकेदार के आदमी, चेरी तोड़ने के लिए,’ वे बोलीं। मैं झट से बाहर दौड़ा। पेड़ों पर टोकरियाँ लिए ठेकेदार के आदमी चढ़े हुए थे। दोनों हाथों से ऊपर-नीचे की शाखाओं से चेरी तोड़ कर टोकरियों में भरते जा रहे थे। किसी दूर की शाखा को पकड़ कर अपने पास घसीटने पर ‘चर्र-चर्र’ की आवाजें गूँजने लगतीं। सारे बाग में शोरगुल था। हम धीरे-धीरे बाग के चक्कर लगाने लगे। हर पेड़ के पास कुछ देर तक खडे़ रह कर ऊपर चढ़े आदमी को देखते। लग रहा था जैसे आज हमारी पराजय का अंतिम दिन हो। हर पेड़ के नीचे काफी चेरी गिरी हुई थीं। छोटी बहन ने लपक कर एक गुच्छा उठा लिया तो भाई ने उसके हाथ से छीन कर फेंक दिया, ‘जानती नहीं कि बहन ने क्या कहा है?’ ‘कोई एक भी चेरी मुँह में नहीं रखेगा।’ झोंपड़ी के पास ठेकेदार अन्य चार-पाँच व्यक्तियों के साथ चुन-चुन कर चेरी एक पेटी में रख रहा था। उसके पास ही कई खाली पेटियाँ पड़ी थीं और दरी पर दिखाई दिया तोड़ी हुई चेरियों का ढेर। वे सब बहुत तेजी से काम कर रहे थे। हमें खड़े देख कर ठेकेदार ने एक-एक मुट्ठी चेरी हम सबको देनी चाही, लेकिन हमने इन्कार कर दिया। हम लोग बाग में ही घूमते रहे। घर से कहीं बाहर जाने की इच्छा नहीं हुई। चेरी के पेड़ धीरे-धीरे खाली हुए जा रहे थे। उस दिन कनस्तर बजाने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ी। बुलबुल और दूसरे पक्षी पेड़ों के ऊपर ही चक्कर लगाते रहे, किसी पेड़ पर बैठने का साहस नहीं था। ‘यह देखो, उस पेड़ के नीचे क्या पड़ा है?’ छोटी बहन ने एक पेड़ की ओर संकेत करके कहा। हमने उस ओर देखा, परंतु जान नहीं सके कि वह क्या है? पास जाने पर पेड़ के नीचे एक मरी हुई बुलबुल दिखाई दी। उसकी गर्दन पर खून जमा हुआ था। हम कुछ देर तक चुपचाप देखते रहे। मैंने उसका पाँव पकड़ कर हिलाया, लेकिन उसमें जान बाकी नहीं बची थी। ‘यह कैसे मर गई?’ ‘किसी ने इसकी गर्दन पर पत्थर मारा है।’ ‘इन्हीं लोगों ने मारा होगा।’ ‘तभी कोई बुलबुल पेड़ पर नहीं बैठ रही।’ हमने ठेकेदार और उसके आदमियों को जी भर कर गालियाँ दीं। उन लोगों पर पहले ही बहुत क्रोध आ रहा था, अब बुलबुल की हत्या देख कर तो उनसे बदला लेने की भावना बहुत तीव्र हो उठी। कितनी ही योजनाएँ बनाईं, परंतु हर बार कोई कमी उसमें नजर आ जाती जिससे उसे अधूरा ही छोड़ देना पड़ता। फिर यह सोच कर कि यदि यह बुलबुल यहीं पड़ी रही तो कोई बिल्ली या कुत्ता इसे खा जाएगा, हमने पास ही एक गड्ढा खोदा और उसमें बुलबुल को लिटा कर ऊपर से मिट्टी डाल दी। उस दिन बड़ी बहन ने बाग में पैर तक नहीं रखा। उन्होंने न मरी हुई बुलबुल देखी, न पेड़ों से चेरी का टूटना। उन्हें पेड़ों से फल तोड़ना अच्छा नहीं लगता। ‘फूल, पौधों और फलों में भी जान होती है। उन्हें तोड़ना भी उतना ही बुरा है जितना किसी जानवर को मारना।’ वे हमसे कहा करती थीं। वे लोग शाम को बहुत देर तक चेरी तोड़ते रहे। फिर एक लारी रुकी जिसमें सब पेटियाँ लाद दी गईं और वे सब चले गए। बाग में अचानक सन्नाटा हो गया, रह गए केवल चेरी के नंगे पेड़, जिन पर एक भी चेरी दिखाई नहीं देती थी। हवा तेज थी और रह-रह कर पेड़ों की शाखाएँ हिल उठती थीं जैसे आखिरी साँसे ले रही हों। नीचे बिखरी हुई थीं अनगिनत पत्तियाँ और कुछ डालियाँ जो चेरी तोड़ते वक्त नीचे गिर गई थीं। शाम हमें बहुत सूनी-सूनी-सी लगी और पेड़ों से डर-सा लगने लगा। खाते वक्त हम दिन भर की घटनाओं की चर्चा करते रहे, मरी हुई बुलबुल का कि़स्सा भी सुनाया। लेकिन बड़ी बहन ने जरा भी दिलचस्पी नहीं ली, उनके मुँह से एक भी शब्द नहीं निकला। लगा जैसे वे हमारी बातें न सुन रही हों। खाना भी उन्होंने बहुत कम खाया। रात को देर तक नींद नहीं आई, न कोई किताब पढ़ने में ही मन लगा। छोटे भाई-बहन दिन भर की थकान से चारपाई पर लेटते ही सो गए। थकान से मेरा शरीर भी टूट रहा था, लेकिन बहुत कोशिश करने पर भी नींद नहीं आ सकी। कुछ देर बाद मैं खिड़की के पास जा कर खड़ा हो गया। अचानक आकाश में बहुत-से तारे एक साथ चमक उठे। तारे यहाँ सचमुच बहुत करीब दिखाई देते हैं। क्यों? केवल छह हजार फुट ही तो ऊँचा यह स्थान है और तारे तो मीलों दूर हैं। फिर इतने पास कैसे दिखाई देते हैं? मैं सोचने लगा। तभी बाग में पेड़ों के नीचे किसी की परछाईं दिखाई दी। मुझे डर-सा लगा। लेकिन कुछ देर बाद पता लगा कि वे बहन हैं। वे अभी तक सोईं नहीं… मैं भी दबे पाँव बाहर आया। वे चेरी के पेड़ों के नीचे टहल रही थीं, उनका आँचल नीचे तक झूल रहा था। ‘अभी तक सोए नहीं?’ बिना मेरी ओर देखे उन्होंने पूछा। उनकी आवाज सुन कर मैं चौंक पड़ा। मेरा अनुमान था कि उन्हें मेरे बाहर आने का पता नहीं चला। मैंने धीमे स्वर में कहा, ‘नहीं, अभी नींद नहीं आई।’ उनके पैरों के नीचे पत्ते दबते तो सर्र-सर्र जैसी आवाज रात के सन्नाटे में गूँज जाती। हवा और तेज हो गई थी। ‘आज बहुत अँधेरा है।’ मैं बोला। ‘आजकल अँधेरी रातें हैं।’ कभी-कभी अपनी नजर ऊपर उठा कर वे किसी पेड़ को देखतीं
