उपन्यास का जन्म प्रश्न या प्रश्नों से होता है। तभी वह जीवन से जुड़ पाता है। व्यक्ति को समाज से प्रशन हो जोड़ते हैं और प्रश्न ही व्यक्ति में खुद को तलाश करने की जिज्ञासा पैदा करते हैं। प्रश्न ही हैं जो व्यक्ति की संवेदना को तीव्र करते हैं। आमतौर पर हिंदी में जो उपन्यास लिखे जाते हैं वे परिवेश पर आधारित न होकर घटनाओं पर ही आधारित होते हैं। उनमें अगर प्रश्न भी पैदा होते हैं तो वे घटनाओं या किरदारों के जरिये पैदा होते हैं। इस तरह के उपन्यासों में व्यक्ति अपनी पहचान भी बाहरी दुनिया में ही खोजता है। वह भूल जाता है कि उसे अपनी पहचान खुद करनी होती है। अलका सरावगी हिंदी की पढ़ी और पसंद की जाने वाली लेखिका हैं। कलिकथा वाया बाइपास उनका पहला उपन्यास था और इसी उपन्यास पर उन्हें साहित्य अकादमी पुरुस्कार भी प्राप्त हो गया। इस उपन्यास में अलका ने वैश्विकरण के चलते सामाजिक व्यवस्था में आ रहे बदलावों को चित्रित किया था। इसी तरह जानकीदास तेजपाल मेंशन उपन्यास में लेखिका ने इस मेंशन को संयुक्त परिवार के प्रतीक के तौर पर चित्रित किया था। उन्होंने दिखाया था कि किस तरह समाज के बदलने से यह मेंशन बिखर रहा है, टूट रहा है। विस्थापन और विघटन इस उपन्यास के मूल में था। अलका सरावगी के अब तक लिखे गये उपन्यासों की कहानियां हमारे इर्द गिर्द की ही कहनियां थीं। उनके किरदार हमारे लिए अनजाने नहीं थे। हम उनसे वाकिफ थे, इसलिए उनसे खुद को कनेक्ट करना मुश्किल नहीं था। और शायद यही वजह है कि उनके पूर्व के लिखे गये सभी उपन्यासों को पाठकों ने पसंद किया। इसकी एक बड़ी वजह यह भी रही कि ये उपन्यास दीखती और बाहरी दुनिया को चित्रित कर रहे थे।
लेकिन अलका सरावगी के भीतर एक नयी दुनिया जन्म ले रही थी। वे अपने चारों तरफ एक आभासी दुनिया को निर्मित होते देख रही थीं। वे अपनी वास्तविक और आभासी दुनिया के बीच एक संवाद के लिए प्रयासरत थीं। वे कोशिश कर रही थीं कि दोनों दुनियाओं के बीच को रिश्ता कायम हो जाए। वे अपनी भीतरी सवालों के जवाब आभासी दुनिया में तलाश रही थीं। और इस तलाश में कभी कभी उन्हें लगता कि असली दुनिया आभासी दुनिया है और वे स्वयं किसी स्वप्न की तरह हैं। उनके मन में रियल और आभासी दुनिया गड्डमड्ड होने लगी थे। कभी उन्हें लगता कि आभासी दुनिया में ही वास्तविक दुनिया की समस्याओं के समाधान छिपे हैं। वे लगातार स्केपटिस्ट होती जा रही थीं। भीतर और बाहर के इस डायलेक्टिक्स को उन्होंने अपने नये उपन्यास का विषय बनाया। और उपन्यास का नाम रखा-एक सच्ची झूठी गाथा। राजकमल द्वारा प्रकाशित यह उपन्यास हिंदी उपन्यासों की बहुत सी रुढ़ियों को तोड़ता है। इसमें घटनाएं होते भी कोई घटना नहीं है। यह आपके सामने एक जादुई दुनिया के दरवाजे खोलता है। यह अनिश्चय, स्वप्न, कल्पनाशीलता और यथार्थ के बीच झूलता है और पाठकों को झुलाता है। अपने कलेवर में छोटा और शिल्प में एकांगी प्रतीत होने वाला यह उपन्यास एक बड़े फलक का उपन्यास है। उपन्यास का नाम देखकर आप सोच सकते हैं कि इसका नाम एक सच्ची झूठी गाथा क्यों रखा गया। लेखिका ने शायद इसीलिए यह नाम चुना क्योंकि वे जानती थीं कि ये सच और झूठ के बीच का संवाद है। लेकिन उनके मन में यह सवाल भी रहा होगा कि जिसे हम सच मानते हैं क्या सचमुच वही सच है, या जिसे हम झूठ (कल्पनाशीलता) कहते हैं वह असली सच है। इसलिए अलका सरावगी ने यह निर्णय पाठकों के विवेक पर छोड़ दिया है। लेकिन लेखक का वास्तविक द्वंद्व खुद से होता है। बहुत ही ग्रिपिंग शैली में लिखे गये इस उपन्यास की शुरुआत नायिका गाथा (एक लेखिका) के बागडोगरा एयरपोर्ट पहुंचने से होती है। यहां गाथा को प्रमित सान्याल से मिलना है। प्रमित सान्याल कौन है यह भी गाथा को नहीं पता। वह है या नहीं है यह भी गाथा नहीं जानती। वास्तव में प्रमित ईमेल के जरिये गाथा के संपर्क में आया है। दोनों के बीच जीवन से जुड़े अहम मसलों पर एब्स्ट्रेक्ट सी चर्चा होती है और उसके बाद दोनों एक दूसरे से मिलने का फैसला करते हैं। प्रमित सान्याल गाथा के सामने नये नये रहस्य और दर्शन के नये अध्याय खोलता जाता है। पता नहीं गाथा प्रमित को जानने के मकसद से या खुद को जानने के लिए इस असंभावित मुलाकात के लिए बागडोगरा एयरपोर्ट पहुंच जाती है। प्रमित उसे यहीं लेने आने वाला है। वह प्रमित का इंतजार करती है और उसके जेहन में वे तमाम अघटनाक्रम चलते रहते हैं जब प्रमित से उसकी बातचीत शुरू हुई थी।
अपनी पहली ही मेल में प्रमित गाथा को बताता है कि उसके पिता बंगाली और मां जर्मन थीं। अगले संवाद में प्रमित बताता है कि उनकी सभी मांएं-जर्मन, बंगाली और आदिवासी, उसे बहुत प्यार करती थीं। मेरे पिता ने मुझे मांएं वैसे ही लाकर दीं जैसे छोटी लड़कियों के पास रशियन, जर्मन, इंडियन, ट्राइबल तरह तरह की गुड़ियाएं होती हैं। प्रमित कहता है कि वह किसी एक देश का नागरिक नहीं बन सकता। यहां लेखक वर्तमान दौर के आइडेंटिटी क्राइसिस की बात कर रहा है। पहचान का यह संकट उपभोक्तावाद और पूंजीवाद की परिणति है। पूरा उपन्यास गाथा और प्रमित के बीच हुए संवादों के सहारे आगे बढ़ता है और साथ ही अपनी पहचान के लिए भटकता है। गाथा को कई बार लगता है जागृत स्वप्न और नींद-तीनों में जैसे कोई अंतर नहीं रह गया है। कहीं कहीं इन दोनों के बीच के संवाद काफ्का की याद दिलाते हैं। काफ्का एक बार अपने एक मित्र के घर गये। मित्र घर पर नहीं था और उसके पिता सो रहे थे। काफ्का के घर पहुंचने पर वह नींद से जागते हैं, लेकिन काफ्का उनसे कहता है कि वे उनके आने को किसी सपने के आने की तरह लें। प्रमित सान्याल एक दिन कहता है, हमारी शताब्दी एक आत्मघाती शताब्दी है। इसका सबसे बड़ा प्रमाण तो देश की सुरक्षा के नाम पर खरीदे जाने वाले बम, जहाज, टैंक, विमान और बंदूकें हैं। कौन सा देश? ग्लोब पर लाइन खींच दी और देश बन गया? तुम जब मलयालम या नागा भाषा में बोला गया एक वाक्य नहीं समझतीं गाथा, तब बताओ तुम्हारा और उनका देश एक कैसे है? पागलपन और नार्मल होने के बीच की लाइन तुमने कभी देखी है? इसी तरह एक बार प्रमित मैं कहां रहता हूं सवाल के जवाब में कहता है-कभी सिलगुड़ी, कभी रायपुर, कभी बेंग्लुरु, कभी कोलकाता। सबसे अच्छा मुझे खंडहरों में रहना लगता है। एक स्थान पर प्रमित कहता है, हर मिश्रित नस्ल के बच्चे को दुनिया में अपनी जगह खोजनी पड़ती है। प्रमित के संवाद एक तरफ अपनी पहचान के संकट को आगे ले जा रहे हैं और दूसरी तरफ भारतीय राजनीति की वर्तमान समस्याओं सो रूबरू कराते हैं। दोनों के बीच संवाद आत्मीयता के स्तरों को छूने लगता है। लेकिन यह आत्मीयता एक मां बेटे की आत्मीयता लगती है। अलका सरावगी ने इस उपन्यास में अनेक रेफरेंस दिये हैं। ये रेफरेंस उनके उपन्यास को आगे बढ़ाने में मददगार होते हैं। एक बार प्रमित गाथा से पूछता है, तुमने इस्साक बशेविक सिंगर की कहानी गिंपल द फूल पढ़ी है? इस कहानी में गिंपल को सब मूर्ख बनाते हैं क्योंकि वह सब पर भरोसा कर लेता है। वह जानता है कि उसके मां बाप कब्र से निकलकर उसे नहीं खोज रहे, पर वह सोचता है कि नुकसान क्या है अगर देख ही ले कि गांव वाले सच तो नहीं कह रहे? वह अपनी पत्नी को बिस्तरे में किसी और मर्द के साथ पकड़ लेता है, पर वह उसे बाहर बकरी देखने भेज देती है और वापस आने पर कहती है कि सब उसकी कल्पना थी। यह जानते हुए भी कि सब झूठे हैं। पर वह लोगों की बात फिर भी मान लेता ह। प्रमित कहता है कि भी यही करने की कोशिश करता हूं जिससे मासूम मूर्खों, बेवकूफ बुद्धिजीवियों और प्रतिष्ठित पागलों की दुनिया में शामिल हो सकूं। गाथा प्रमित की बातों से अवाक और चकित होती रहती है। पता चलता है कि प्रमित कवि भी है और विदेशी लेखकों को उसने खूब पढ़ा है। उसकी पसंद नितांत अलग है। वह गाथा को बताता है कि एलिस इन वंडरलैंड बाइबिल कुरान और रामायाण से बेहतर पुस्तक है। यह कहानी भी स्वप्नलोक के ताने बाने के साथ बुनी गयी है। इस कहानी में एलिस एक खरगोश का पीछा करते हुए एक गड्ढे में गिर जाती है। वहां कभी कुछ खाकर वह बहुत छोटी और बहुत बड़ी होती रहती है। वह एक चाय पार्टी में जाती है, जो कभी खत्म नहीं होती, क्योंकि वहां घड़ी की सुई छह बजे पर ठहर गयी है?एलिस सपने से जागती है, लेकिन उसे यह संदेह होने लगता है कि वह खुद किसी और का सपना तो नहीं? क्या पता यह सच हो कि हम हैं ही नहीं इस दुनिया में। क्या पता हम प्रतिबिंबों के प्रतिबिंब हों? सपनों में देखे गये सपने? ये भाषा और दर्शन इस कहानी के कैनवस को विस्तार देता रहता है। एक अन्य स्थान पर प्रमित गाथा के समक्ष सेमुअल बकेट के वेटिंग फार गोदो का जिक्र करता है। बीसवीं सदी के इस सबसे प्रभावशाली माने जाने वाले नाटक दो पात्रों की कहानी है। बाद में इसमें एक काल्पनिक पात्र गोडोट भी आ जाता है। इस नाटक के बारे में अस्तित्ववादियों का विचार है कि इसमें कुछ एसे मौलिक प्रश्न हैं जिसका प्रत्येक मनुष्य से सामना होता है, अगर वे व्यक्तिपरक अस्तित्व को गंभीरता से लेते हैं। उन सवालों में मृत्यु, मानव अस्तित्व का अर्थ और उस अस्तित्व में ईश्वर का स्थान या अभाव जैसे सवाल शामिल हैं। उपन्यास में ये प्रश्न अकारण नहीं आए हैं बल्कि ये हमारे अस्तित्व से जुड़े अहम सवालों को उठाते हैं। तुम इतने दुखी क्यों रहते हो के सवाल पर प्रमित कहता है, इतने नंगे भूखे-बेसहारा लोगों के बीच सुखी रहना अश्लील नहीं है? क्या यह आज के दौर को चित्रित नहीं करता ?
एयरपोर्ट पर प्रमित सान्याल गाथा को लेने नहीं आता। गाथा नाराज होती है। तभी उसका मेल आता है कि वह उसकी नाराजगी की वजह से उसकी और अपनी जान खतरे में नहीं डाल सकता। गाथा वापस लौट आती है। कुछ दिन की नाराजगी के बाद दोनों के बीच फिर से संवाद शुरू हो जाते हैं। गाथा को पता चलता है कि प्रमित सान्याल कुछ खतरनाक लोगों के साथ काम करता है। प्रमित बताता है कि उनका एजेंडा व्यवस्था के चेहरे की क्रूर हंसी को हटाना है। तभी शेष दुनिया के चेहरों पर हंसी लाई जा सकती है। प्रमित एक बार फिर से बताता है कि मैं वह हूं जो आरमेनिया में आधा मर गया था और आधा भूटान मे मार दिया गया। गाथा प्रमित की हकीकतों को जानने के बावजूद उससे संवाद नहीं छोड़ पाती। वह प्रमित की लिखी कविताओं को पसंद करती है। एक दिन प्रमित बताता है कि उसने वीरेंद्र भट्टाचार्य का उपन्यास मृत्युंजय पढ़ा है। यह उपन्यास 1942 के स्वाधीनता आंदोलन में असम की भूमिका पर लिखी गयी उत्कृष्ट रचना मानी जाती है। इसमें विद्रोही जनता का सजीव चित्रण किया गया है। ये तमाम रेफेरेंस उपन्यास को आगे ले जाते हैं। अगर उपन्यास में एडगर एलन पो की कविता है तो वह कहीं ना कहीं पो की रहस्यात्मकता के जरिये प्रमित का ही चरित्र चित्रण करती दिखाई पड़ती है। यह भी संयोग नहीं है कि पो ने बचपन में ही अपने मांबाप को खो दिया था और खुद उनकी मृत्यु 40 साल की उम्र में हो गयी थी। पूरे उपन्यास में पहचान और स्वतंत्रता की तलाश स्पष्ट दिखाई पड़ती है। गाथा और प्रमित के बीच का आत्मालाप और संवाद ही यह दिखाता है कि गाथा उम्र में प्रमित से काफी बड़ी है और वह उसके बेटे की उम्र का ही है। यह भी लगता है कि प्रमित गाथा का ही कल्पना पुत्र है। गाथा और प्रमित की यह सच्ची झूठी गाथा रियल और अनरियल के बीच का संवाद है। और शायद ही कोई इनसान हो जिसके भीतर एक आभासी किरदार ना रहता हो। बाहर की दुनिया में रहने वाला समाज में अपनी जगह बनाए रखने के लिए पाखंड का सहारा लेता है और आभासी दुनिया में रहने वाला यथार्थ के ज्यादा करीब होता है। बेशक जीवन की तरह ही यह उपन्यास कहीं पहुंचता नहीं है लेकिन यह आपको भीतर तक झकझोरता जरूर है। आपके मन में तमाम तरह के सवाल पैदा करता है। आप इन सवालों से लगातार जूझते हैं और आंखें बंद किये रहते हैं। यह उपन्यास उन सवालों की घुमाकर आपके सामने खड़ा कर देता है। आश्चर्य की बात है कि इस तरह के वैचारिक उपन्यास में भी गज़ब की पठनीयता है। परंपरागत उपन्यासों के बीच यह उपन्यास अपनी एक अलग जगह बनाता है। प्रमित अंत में कहता भी है, गाथा, मेरा सच क्या है, यह तुम कभी नहीं जान पाओगी। मेरा सच है तो इसी ब्रह्मांड में, पर वह किसी की भी पहुंच के बाहर है। सच पूछा तो कई बार लगता है कि मेरा सच मेरी हथेलियों की रखाओं में भी नहीं लिखा। मैं उसे खुद नहीं पढ़ पाता। पीछे देखता हूं तो सिर्फ धुंध है। उसमें मैं अपने सच को रोज मिटाकर रोज नए सच लिखता हूं। यही सबसे बड़ा सच है जो मैं तुम्हें अंत में बताए दे रहा हूं।
सच स्वतंत्रता पहचान और अस्तित्व के प्रश्नों से जूझता यह उपन्यास अपने समय से आगे का उपन्यास है। यह सच्ची झूठी गाथा समय से परे अपने समाज को देखने को उम्दा कोशिश है।
