लेखकीय प्रस्तावना
यह पुस्तक इस तरह से लिखी गई.
सबसे पहले तो मैंने सोचा कि रूसी-बर्लिन के बारे में कई किस्से प्रस्तुत करूँ, फिर ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ कि इन किस्सों को किसी सामान्य विषय में पिरोना काफ़ी दिलचस्प होगा. विषय चुना “चिड़ियाघर” (“Zoo”) – पुस्तक का शीर्षक पैदा हो गया, मगर वह विभिन्न टुकड़ों को जोड़ नहीं रहा था. फिर ये ख़याल आया कि इसे पत्रों की शक्ल के एक उपन्यास का रूप क्यों न दिया जाए.
पत्रों वाले उपन्यास के लिए किसी कारण की आवश्यकता होती है – आख़िर लोग एक दूसरे को पत्र क्यों लिखते हैं. आम तौर से एक कारण होता है – प्रेम और विरह. मैंने अंशतः इस कारण को चुना: एक प्रेमी ऐसी महिला को पत्र लिखता है, जिसके पास उसके लिए समय नहीं है. अब मुझे एक नए संदर्भ की ज़रूरत पड़ी: चूंकि पुस्तक की प्रमुख विषयवस्तु प्रेम नहीं है, अतः मैंने प्रेम के बारे में लिखने की बंदिश को चुना. परिणाम वह हुआ जिसे मैंने उपशीर्षक में दर्शाया है – “(अ)प्रेम-पत्र”.
अब तो जैसे किताब ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद लिखती चली गई, उसे बस, ज़रूरत थी विषयवस्तु को जोड़ने की, अर्थात् प्रेम-काव्य पक्ष और वर्णनात्मक पक्ष को गूंथने की. भाग्य और विषयवस्तु के सामने सिर झुकाते हुए, मैंने इन चीज़ों को तुलनात्मक रूप से एक दूसरे से जोड़ा: तब सारे वर्णन प्रेम के रूपक प्रतीत होने लगे.
श्रृंगार-काव्य की चीज़ें इस तरह से लिखी जाती हैं: उनमें वास्तविक चीज़ों को नकारते हुए रूपकों पर बल दिया जाता है.

अगर मेरे पास एक और सूट होता, तो मुझे कभी दुःख का एहसास न होता.
घर लौटने के बाद कपड़े बदले, हाथ-पैर सीधे किए – बस, अपने आप को बदलने के लिए इतना काफ़ी है.
औरतें तो इसका उपयोग दिन में कई बार करती हैं. आप औरत से जो भी कहते हो, उसका जवाब फ़ौरन मांग लो; वर्ना वह गर्म पानी का शॉवर लेने चली जाएगी, ड्रेस बदल लेगी, और आपको अपनी बात फिर से शुरू करनी पड़ेगी.
कपड़े बदलने के बाद वे हाव-भाव भी भूल जाती हैं.
मैं आपको सलाह दूँगा कि औरत से फ़ौरन जवाब मांग लें.
वर्ना, आप अपने आप को अक्सर किसी नए, अप्रत्याशित शब्द के सामने परेशानी से खड़ा पाएँगे.
औरतों की ज़िन्दगी में वाक्यविन्यास (सिंटैक्स) लगभग होता ही नहीं है.
मर्द को बदलती है उसकी कारीगरी.
औज़ार न केवल इन्सान के हाथ को निरंतरता देता है, मगर वह ख़ुद भी उसमें निरंतर बना रहता है.
कहते हैं कि अंधा स्पर्श के एहसास को अपने डंडे के छोर पर केन्द्रित करता है.
अपने जूतों के प्रति मेरे मन में कोई ख़ास लगाव नहीं है, मगर फिर भी वह मेरी ही निरंतरता है, वो मेरा हिस्सा है.
आख़िर छड़ी ने स्कूली-छात्र को बदल दिया और वह उसके लिए प्रतिबंधित हो गई.
बन्दर डाल पर ज़्यादा ईमानदार होता है, मगर डाल भी मनोविज्ञान पर असर डालती है.
फिसलन भरी बर्फ़ पर जाती हुई गाय का मनोविज्ञान तो कहावत में बन गया है.
सबसे ज़्यादा इन्सान को बदलती है मशीन.
लेव टॉल्स्टॉय “युद्ध और शांति” में वर्णन करते हैं कि कैसे शर्मीला और साधारण तोपची तूशिन युद्ध के समय एक नई दुनिया में चला जाता है, जो उसके तोपखाने ने बनाई थी.
“इस भिनभिनाहट, शोरगुल, एकाग्रता की आवश्यकता और कार्यकलाप के कारण तूशिन को भय की अप्रिय भावना का एहसास भी नहीं हो रहा था…उल्टे, उसे अधिकाधिक प्रसन्नता महसूस हो रही थी…
चारों ओर से कानों को बहरा कर देने वाली अपने हथियारों की आवाज़ से, दुश्मन के तोप के गोलों की सनसनाहट और उनकी मार से, हथियारों के निकट भाग-दौड करते, पसीने से लथपथ, लाल पड़ते हुए सैनिकों की ओर देखने से, इन्सानों और घोड़ों के खून को देखने से, उस पार उठ रहे दुश्मन के धुँए से (जिसके बाद हर बार तोप का गोला उड़ते हुए आता और ज़मीन में , इन्सान के जिस्म में, तोपखाने में या घोड़े के बदन में धँस जाता), – इन सब चीज़ों को देखते हुए उसके दिमाग़ में अपनी एक काल्पनिक दुनिया बन गई थी, जो इस समय उसे आनन्द प्रदान कर रही थी…वह अपने आप को बेहद ऊँचा, ताक़तवर मर्द समझ रहा था, जो दोनों हाथों से तोप के गोले उठा-उठाकर फ्रांसिसियों पर फेंक रहा था.”
मशीन-गनर और डबल-बास बजाने वाला – अपने अपने यंत्रों की निरंतरता ही होते हैं.
अण्डर-ग्राऊण्ड रेल्वे, ऊपर उठने वाली क्रेन्स और कारें – मानवता के कृत्रिम अंग हैं.
कुछ ऐसा हुआ कि मुझे कुछ वर्ष ड्राईवर्स के बीच बिताने पड़े.
चालीस हॉर्स-पॉवर का इंजिन पुराने नैतिक मूल्यों को नष्ट कर देता है.
वेग ड्राईवर को मानव से अलग करता है.
इंजिन चालू करो, एक्सेलेरेटर दबाओ – और जैसे ही गति का सूचक घूमने लगता है, तुम देश और काल से दूर चले जाते हो.
कार महामार्ग पर सौ किलोमीटर्स प्रति घण्टे से अधिक की रफ़्तार दे सकती है.
मगर इतनी रफ़्तार की ज़रूरत क्या है?
वह सिर्फ भागने वाले या पीछा करने वाले के लिए ज़रूरी है.
कार आदमी को खींचते हुए वहाँ तक ले जाती है, जिसे ईमानदारी से, अपराध कहा जाता है.
सौभाग्य से, रूसी ड्राईवर आम तौर से अच्छा कामगार होता है.
वह उन रास्तों पर चलता है, जो लहरों की याद दिलाते हैं, स्तेपी में कार दुरुस्त करता है, जब बर्फ और पेट्रोल के कारण हाथ अकड़ जाते हैं. मगर इसके साथ ही ड्राईवर कामगार नहीं है; कार में वह तनहा होता है.
उसकी कार उसे नशे में धुत करती है, रफ़्तार उसे नशे में धुत कर देती है, ज़िन्दगी से दूर ले जाती है.
क्रांति से पूर्व कारों के योगदान को नहीं भूलना चाहिए.
वोलीन्स्की की फ़ौज ने बैरेक्स से निकलने का फ़ैसला एकदम नहीं किया.
रूसी फ़ौजें अक्सर खड़े-खड़े विद्रोह करती थीं.
दिसम्बर-क्रांतिकारियों को अपनी जगह पर ही नष्ट कर दिया गया था.
विद्रोहियों ने बैरेक्स छोड़ दिए, मगर वे अनिश्चय की स्थिति में थे. उनसे मुक़ाबले के लिए दूसरे आ गए.
फौजें मिल गईं और रुक गईं.
मगर गैरेजों के दरवाज़ों पर पत्थरों की मार होने लगी, और पकड़ी गई भोंपू वाली कारों पर मज़दूर शहर भाग गए.
आपने फ़ेन से क्रांति को शहर में बिखेर दिया, कारों पर बिखेर दिया.
क्रांति ने रफ़्तार बढ़ाई और चल पड़ी.
कारों के स्प्रिंग्स मुड़ गए, मडगार्ड्स मुड़ गए, कारें शहर में दौड़ती रहीं, और वहाँ, जहाँ पहले दो थीं, पता चला कि अब वहाँ आठ हो गई हैं.
मुझे कारें पसन्द हैं.
उस समय पूरा देश हिचकोले ले रहा था. क्रांति ने फ़ेनिल अवस्था पार कर ली थी और पैदल ही सीमा पर चली गई.
हथियार आदमी को ज़्यादा बहादुर बनाता है.
घोड़ा उसे घुड़सवार में बदल देता है.
चीज़ें आदमी के साथ वो करती हैं, जो वह उनके साथ करता है. रफ़्तार गंतव्य की मांग करती है.
चीज़ें हमारे चारों ओर उगती हैं, – अब वे दो सौ साल पहले के मुक़ाबले में दस गुना या सौ गुना ज़्यादा हो गई हैं.
मानवता का उन पर स्वामित्व है, अलग-थलग आदमी – है ही नहीं.
किसी रहस्यमय कार का व्यक्तिगत स्वामित्व होना चाहिए, नया रोमांटिसिज़्म होना चाहिए, जिससे कि वे ज़िन्दगी के मोडों पर इन्सानों को बाहर न फेंक दें.
अभी मैं परेशान हूँ, क्योंकि ये डामर, जो कारों के टायरों से घिस गया है, ये रंगबिरंगे विज्ञापन और अच्छे कपड़े पहनी हुईं औरतें, – ये सब मुझे बदल रहा है. यहाँ मैं वैसा नहीं हूँ, जैसा था, और लगता है कि यहाँ मैं ठीक नहीं हूँ.
विक्टर श्क्लोव्स्की ने यह रचना 1923 में लिखी थी। क्रान्ति में और प्रथम विश्व-युद्ध में सक्रिय रूप से भाग लेने वाले विक्टर श्क्लोव्स्की को सोवियत फ़िल्म उद्योग के चार पायों में से एक पाया माना जाता है, जिन्होंने सोवियत फ़िल्मों को दिशा दिखाई और शुरू से ही साहित्य और फ़िल्मों का आपसी रिश्ता बनाए रखा। 1923 में ही बर्लिन में इस सिलसिले में उनकी पहली किताब छपी थी — साहित्य और फ़िल्म। रूसी साहित्य में विक्टर श्क्लोव्स्की का नाम क़रीब-क़रीब नहीं लिया जाता। हालाँकि ’चिड़ियाघर या ख़त जो मौहब्बत के बारे में नहीं हैं’ उनकी एक प्रमुख रचना है, जिसमें वे अपनी एक ख़ास रचना शैली के साथ सामने आए थे। उन्होंने अपनी लेखन-शैली बनाई थी, जो रूसी साहित्य में लोकप्रिय नहीं हुई। रूसी आलोचकों ने इसे ’जुमलेबाज़ी’ बताया और कोई ख़ास महत्व नहीं दिया। लेकिन फ़िल्मों में उनके योगदान को भुलाया नहीं जा सकता है। उन्होंने दो बार रूसी फ़िल्म उद्योग का इतिहास भी लिखा। 1965 में जब रूसी फ़िल्म उद्योग को 40 साल पूरे हुए, तब और 1985 में जब फ़िल्म उद्योग को 60 साल पूरे हुए, तब।
