गाय
एक गाय का चित्र खींचता हूँ। वह गली में रहती है, वहाँ जहाँ कचरे के ढेर हैं। दिन भर वहीँ मंडराती है। तुमने भी तो देखा होगा उसे ? कचरा जल रहा होता है। धुएँ और आग में भी वह थूथुन डाल देती है, भोजन का कोई टुकड़ा बचाने के लिए। क्या-क्या नहीं खा लेती वह ! कागज़ और प्लास्टिक की पन्नियाँ — ये भी उसका भोजन हैं। और भी बहुत सारी अपथ्य वस्तुएँ। उसकी आँखों में आशा नहीं है। देह भूखी-सूखी है। तब भी वह जुटी रहती है अपने जीवन को कुछ और आगे खींचने की कोशिश में। एक गाय का चित्र खींचता हूँ।
क्रोध से भरा है
क्रोध से भरा है
क्योंकि वह खरा है
जैसे किसी ज़माने में
खरा होता था नदियों, तालाबों और झीलों का पानी
और पशु-पक्षी आते थे उसे पीने
और नहाने उसमें,
सहज ही उतर जाते थे उसके प्रांगण में
उस पर भरोसा करते हुए
और फिर उसी सहजता से निकलकर चले जाते थे
उसे वैसा ही खरा छोड़कर।
ये एक गुज़रे हुए ज़माने की बातें हैं।
उसे याद करने वाले भी बस कुछ ही बचे हैं
और जल्द ही वे भी चले जायेंगे
उसी के साथ जो अब
क्रोध से भरा है
और ठगा-सा खड़ा है।
एक दफ़्तर के बरामदे में
एक दफ़्तर के बरामदे में
सीढ़ियों के आगे
भला वह जानवर खड़ा था।
निश्चित ही वह स्वस्थ नहीं था
और अन्दर से सड़ रहा था
क्योंकि वह स्थान उसकी सड़ान्ध से भरा था।
वह शान्त था, चुप था, पर उसकी आँखों में अदृश्य एक पीड़ा थी
जो चोखी और घनी थी और जिसे मैंने भाँप लिया था।
यह स्पष्ट नहीं था कि कब तक उसे उस पीड़ा को सहना था,
कब उसका अन्त होना था,
कब उसे ढहना था।
मैं बरसों से स्वयं को रोक रहा था,
लेकिन उस क्षण
मैंने पहली बार
प्रकृति को श्राप दिया
जिसने जीवन को जन्म दिया था।
पेड़ कट गया
पेड़ कट गया।
जबकि मैं अब भी ज़िन्दा हूँ।
मेरी तरह
वह भी एक प्राणी था,
उसकी रगों में भी लहू दौड़ता था।
वह तब भी कट गया।
वह एक बूढ़ा पेड़ था,
लगभग एक ठूँठ।
वह ज़रा भी छाया नहीं देता था।
कोई पक्षी उस पर घोंसला नहीं बनाता था,
न ही रात को आकर कोई उस पर सोता था।
सब प्राणियों ने उसे अकेला छोड़ दिया था।
पर था तो वह एक पेड़ ही
जिसमें अभी जान थी।
उसे काट दिया गया।
वे खींचकर ले गये उसे।
जबकि मैं अब भी ज़िन्दा हूँ।
यह कितना विचित्र है कि एक बूढ़े पेड़ को सरेआम काट दिया गया
और किसी ने भी उस हत्या का विरोध नहीं किया।
रात के नौ का समय था
रात के नौ का समय था।
शहर बत्तियों से चमचमा रहा था।
गाड़ियाँ आ रही थीं, गाड़ियाँ जा रही थीं,
गाड़ियाँ रुक रही थीं, थम रही थीं,
चिल्ल-पौं मचा रही थीं।
सड़कों पर
उनमें से
निकलने वाला धुआँ
भरा था।
और मैंने देखा कि
इस सब के बीचों-बीच
ऐन चौराहे पर
अकेला एक जानवर खड़ा था —
मनुष्यों की
भद्दी दुनिया में
सहमा हुआ एक जानवर
जिसकी आँखों में
रह-रहकर
रोशनी पड़ रही थी
और उनमें
ज़रा भी
चमक नहीं थी।
वे बाहर से हमें देख रहे थे
वे बाहर से हमें देख रहे थे।
हम एक चमचमाते हुए रेस्तराँ में थे
जिसके दरवाज़े काँच के थे।
हम दूर से
टहलते हुए से
उनकी ओर बढ़े थे।
वे तब भी हमें देख रहे थे
और तब भी जब हम
रेस्तराँ में घुसे।
हम सोफे पर बैठ गये।
हमने चाय और ठण्डी कॉफी के लिए कहा।
फिर हम अपनी पुस्तकें निकालकर पढ़ने लगे।
वे एक छोटे-से ट्रक के यात्री थे जो थोड़ी देर के लिए वहाँ रुका था,
वहाँ सड़क के किनारे।
ट्रक धूल से भरा था।
वे बाहर से ही हमें देख रहे थे, लगातार देख रहे थे।
उनसे आँख मिलाऊँ, यह माद्दा मुझमें नहीं था।
मेरे पिता की तस्वीर
मेरे पिता की तस्वीर आज कुछ कागजों में मिली।
यह उनकी एकमात्र तस्वीर है जो बची है।
पिता को तस्वीरें पसन्द नहीं थीं।
वे सभी निजी तस्वीरों को फाड़कर फेंक देते थे।
हमारे बचपन की जो थोड़ी-सी तस्वीरें थीं वे भी इसी तरह ही गयीं।
तस्वीरें ही नहीं, वे घर की अन्य चीजें भी उठाकर ग़ायब कर देते थे।
उन्हें चीजों की भरमार अच्छी नहीं लगती थी।
उनके सारे कपड़े एक छोटे, काले ट्रंक में समा जाते थे।
वे छोटा-सा एक रेडियो भी रखते थे,
बढ़िया पेनों के शौकीन थे,
उर्दू का अख़बार पढ़ते थे।
उनकी बदौलत हमारा घर हल्का रहता था।
उनकी यह तस्वीर मैंने एक एलबम में रख ली है।
मेरे जाने के बाद इसे कोई नहीं देखेगा।
दवंगरा रोज़ एक कुत्ते को कुछ खिलाती है
दवंगरा रोज़ एक छोटे, मरियल कुत्ते को कुछ खिलाती है,
शाम को जब वह दफ़्तर से लौटती है।
वह अकेला ही होता है — मैंने कभी उसको अन्य कुत्तों के साथ नहीं देखा।
शुरू में वह उससे डरता था, उससे परे भागता था, तब भी जब वह उसे खाने को कुछ देती थी।
फिर दवंगरा ने तरकीब निकाली।
वह खाना रखकर दूर चली जाती थी, और जब वह मुड़कर देखती थी वह खा रहा होता था।
अब वह उसे देखते ही उसके साथ चलने लगता है और खाने के लिए अपने-आप कुछ मांगता है।
हर जीव को कुछ प्रेम, कुछ स्नेह चाहिए होता है,
और साथ में कुछ खाने को।
मात्र प्रेम और स्नेह से पेट नहीं भरता।
न यह रात है, न दिन है
न यह रात है,
न दिन है।
या फिर यूँ कहें कि
रात और दिन यहाँ
दोनों छिन्न-भिन्न हैं,
टुकड़ों में बंट गये हैं —
यह अजब दृश्य
जिसे मैं देख रहा हूँ —
या मैं उसके भीतर हूँ —
क्या यह कोई पेंटिंग है
जिसमें रात और दिन
बेतरतीब एक ढंग में
यहाँ-वहाँ छिटक गये हैं,
और फट गये हैं,
कट गये हैं,
फिर जुड़ गये हैं,
टेढ़े-मेढ़े मुड़ गये हैं,
स्वयं ही से चट गये हैं,
ऊब गये हैं अपने जीवन से,
भटक गये हैं, भटक गये हैं?
रात और दिन

अन्तिम मनुष्य
तुम अकेले ही मरोगे।
तुम्हारे चहुँ ओर मरु होगा।
सूर्य बरसेगा।
तुम मरीचिकाएँ देखोगे,
उनके पीछे दौड़ोगे,
भटकोगे।
पानी की एक बूँद के लिए भी तरसोगे।
ओह वह भयावह होगा !
एक मामूली जीव की तरह
मृत्यु से पहले
असहाय तुम तड़पोगे।
इतिहास में
सारे मनुष्यों के
सभी-सभी
कुकृत्यों का
जुर्माना भरोगे।
तुम अकेले ही मरोगे।
हालाँकि वे बचेंगे

रुस्तम जी गहरी संवेदना और दार्शनिक सोच के महत्वपूर्ण कवि हैं. कविताएँ मार्मिक हैं, मेरे सामने कई दृश्य उभर आए इन्हें पढ़कर – ‘वे एक छोटे-से ट्रक के यात्री थे जो थोड़ी देर के लिए वहाँ रुका था,
वहाँ सड़क के किनारे।
ट्रक धूल से भरा था।
वे बाहर से ही हमें देख रहे थे, लगातार देख रहे थे।
उनसे आँख मिलाऊँ, यह माद्दा मुझमें नहीं था।’ ये रोज़मर्रा के दृश्य हैं जिन्हें हम देखकर भी अनदेखा करते हैं. रचनाकार की सफलता इसी बात में है की वह देखे हुए दृश्यों को नई दृष्टि से देखने को बाध्य कर दे और रुस्तम जी यह काम बड़ी संवेदना से करते हैं.
इन कविताओं में एक मध्यवर्गीय मनुष्य की सम्वेदनाएँ अभिव्यक्त हुई हैं। शिल्प और शब्द-चयन की दृष्टि से कविताएँ उत्कृष्ट हैं। रुस्तम कवि हैं और एक अच्छे कवि हैं, यह पहली ही नज़र में पतालग जाता है। ’हालाँकि वे बचेंगे’ कविता की अन्तिम पंक्तियाँ हैं — “हालाँकि वे तब भी बचेंगे, / तब भी फलेंगे। / आह तुम्हारी / उनको लगेगी।” आह लगना एक मुहावरा है। लेकिन क्या वास्तव में ’आह’ लगती है? अगर वे तब भी बचेंगे और फलेंगे तो ’आह’ कहाँ लगी। लेकिन कवि को लगता है कि ’आह’ लगेगी। यह सच्चाई से मुँह मोड़ना है। शोषकों, हत्यारों, नेताओं, बेईमानों, अपराधियों, चोरों और लुटेरों को कभी किसी की आह नहीं लगती उनकी ख़ुद की ’आह’ से ही हज़ारों लोगों को चोट पहुँचती है।
