किसी भी साहित्यिक कृति चाहे वो कहानी हो , उपन्यास हो या फिर आत्मकथा उस पर फिल्म बनाना बहुत जोखिम का काम है। यह दोधारी तलवार पर चलने के समान है। इसमें संतुलन बनाए रखना बेहद जरूरी है जैसे कोई नट रस्सी पर संतुलन साध कर चलता है थोड़ी सी असावधानी होने पर धड़ाम से गिर सकता है। फिल्म निर्देशक डॉ. चंद्र प्रकाश द्विवेदी ने भी साहित्यकार काशीनाथ सिंह के उपन्यास काशी का अस्सी पर फिल्म बनाने का साहस किया है।
यह कहानी बनारस के एक मोहल्ले अस्सी की है। इसका समय 1988 से शुरू होता है और अगले 5-6 बरस की घटनाएं दर्शाई गई हैं। मोहल्ला अस्सी में ब्राह्मण रहते हैं। धर्मनाथ पांडे (सनी देओल) संस्कृत शिक्षक है। वह घाट पर बैठ कर पूजा पाठ भी करता है, लेकिन परिवार बढ़ने से बढ़ती आवश्यकताओं तथा महंगाई के कारण उसकी आर्थिक हालत दिन पर दिन खराब होती जाती है। उसके मोहल्ले के अन्य लोग भी चाहते हैं कि वे विदेशियों को पेइंग गेस्ट रख कर पैसा कमाए, लेकिन धर्मनाथ को म्लेच्छों ( विदेशियों ) का अपने मुहल्ले में रहना पसंद नहीं है। वह पड़ोसियों के घर पर विदेशियों को रहने का विरोध करता है। इससे मुहल्ले के लोग मन मार कर रह जाते हैं। पर समय बलवान होता है जो धर्मनाथ दूसरों के घरों में विद्यार्थियों के रहने पर हायतौबा मचाता है जब उसकी शिक्षक की नौकरी छूट जाती है तो वो खुद एक विदेशी लड़की को अपने घर रखने के लिए मजबूर हो जाता है।
कहानी दो ट्रेक पर चलती है। धर्मनाथ को समय के बदलाव के साथ अपने आदर्श ध्वस्त होते नजर आते हैं तो दूसरी ओर भारत की राजनीतिक परिस्थितियां विचलित कर देने वाली है। मंडल कमीशन और मंदिर-मस्जिद विवाद की गरमाहट पप्पू की चाय की दुकान पर महसूस की जाती है जहां भाजपा, कांग्रेस और कम्युनिस्ट विचारधारा के लोग रोज अड्डाबाजी कर चाय पर चर्चा करते रहते हैं।
इनकी चर्चाएं बगैर किसी लागलपेट के अपनी बात बिंदास तरीके से कहने के बनारसी अंदाज का नमूना हैं। इन चर्चाओं में गालियां तकिया कलाम की तरह इस्तेमाल होतीं हैं। तत्कालीन राजनीति पर होनेवाली गर्मागर्म बहसों में लोग किसी को भी.नहीं बख्शते। खासकर मंडल कमीशन को लेकर वीपी सिंह को तो जमकर लताड़ा गया है।
फिल्म में इस बात को लेकर नाराजगी जताई गई है कि हर बात का बाजारीकरण कर दिया गया है, चाहे गंगा मैया हो या योग। हर चीज बेची जा रही है। फिल्म में एक जगह संवाद है कि वो दिन दूर नहीं जब हवा भी बेची जाएगी।इन सब बातों की आंच बनारस के मोहल्ला अस्सी तक भी पहुंच गई है जहां आदर्श चरमरा गए हैं। फिल्म में इस बात को भी दर्शाने की कोशिश की गई है कि ज्ञानी इन दिनों मोहताज हो गया है और पाखंडी पूजे जा रहे हैं। अंग्रेजों की भी खटिया खड़ी की गई है जो बेरोजगारी भत्ता पाकर बनारस में पड़े रहते हैं।
फिल्म.के सारे कलाकारों का चयन लाजवाब है। धर्मनाथ पांडे के रोल में सन्नी देओल को देखना सुखद आश्चर्य से भर देता है। घायल और गदर जैसी फिल्मों के गुस्सैल सन्नी सीधे सादे पंडितजी की भूमिका में भी जमे हैं। उनका संस्कृत श्लोकों का पाठ करना उनकी मेहनत को दर्शाता है।
सबसे कमाल का अभिनय साक्षी तंवर ने किया है। उनके किरदार के मन के अंदर क्या चल रहा है ये उनके अभिनय में देखा जा सकता है। वे एक निम्न आय के परिवार की महिला की भूमिका में एकदम सहज लगती हैं। उनके उठने- बैठने चलने और बोलने में सहजता दिखती है वो उनके बेहतरीन अभिनेत्री होने का प्रमाण है।
कनी गुरु की भूमिका में रवि किशन भी अच्छे लगते हैं। सौरभ शुक्ला और राजेन्द्र गुप्ता तो हैं ही मंझे हुए कलाकार। अखिलेन्द्र मिश्रा के लिए ज्यादा स्कोप नहीं था।
हाल के वर्षों में करीब आधा दर्जन फिल्में ऐसी बनीं हैं जिनकी आधारभूमि बनारस है जैसे रांझणा, मसान आदि लेकिन इन सब से तुलना कर देखा जाए तो बनारस की सबसे मुक्कमल तस्वीर मोहल्ला अस्सी में ही नजर आती है। बनारस के घाटों पर जीवन का जीवंत नमूना इसमें है। फिल्मांकन में बनारस की खूबसूरती लुभाती है।
इस फिल्म में मूल किताब की तरह ही गालियों की भरमार है। इनकी वजह से.ही ये फिल्म काफी दिनों तक सेंसर में लटकी रही और इसे ए सर्टिफिकेट दिया गया है। लेकिन ये गालियां गालियों की तरह इस्तेमाल नहीं होतीं ये उस इलाके के लोगों की सहज.बोलचाल का हिस्सा हैं। इसको फिल्म सहजता से दिखा पाई है।
कुल मिलाकर फिल्म अच्छी है पर चलेगी नहीं। कोई मसाला नहीं है।
