इनफ़िडल
अगर ये कहानी, ‘एक लड़की थी’ से शुरू होगी तो क्या आप इसे पढ़ैंगे? शायद हाँ, शायद नहीं. पर ये कहानी
एक लड़की थी से ही शुरू होती है. कहानी मेरी है. लेकिन शुरू इस लड़की से होती है. मैं उन दिनों खुद से भी
बातचीत बंद कर चुका था जब उसने मुझे मैसेज किया था कि मैं ज़िरो घाटी हूँ और अब मुझे आगे कहाँ जाना
चाहिए. वो उस अनसुनी-अनदेखी जगह तक पहुँचने का रास्ता जानना चाहती थी, जिसका मैंने किसी
मुलाक़ात में ज़िक्र किया था. मिथुन जानवरों और केले के जंगली पेड़ों से भरी उस घाटी में धान की नई
फ़सलों से गुज़रते हुए उसे देख रहा था मैं, बिना किसी कैमरे, बिना किसी कोशिश के.
मैं पश्चिमी घाट के समंदर के किनारे टिका हुआ था, जब मुझे उसका मैसेज मिला. मुझे उसके पागलपन पर
ज़रा भी हैरत नहीं हुई थी. बस यही पागलपन तो है जो हम दोनों के बीच एक सा है. उसने मुझे बताया था कि
वो अकेली नहीं थी, कोई था उसके साथ. मैं नहीं जानना चाहता था कि उसके साथ कौन था. मैं ये भी नहीं
जानना चाहता था कि वो कहाँ थी, क्यों थी. मैं उसके बारे में, अपने बारे में कुछ भी नहीं जानना चाहता था.
क्योंकि कुछ जानने की शुरूआत के बाद, अगर दिलचस्पी हो, तो सबकुछ जान लेने की कोशिश की शुरुआत
होने लगती है. इंसानी दिमाग ऐसे ही काम करता है. क्योंकि सबकुछ आप जान नहीं सकते, मगर उस सबकुछ
को जानने की कोशिश में जो आप जानना चाहते हैं, आप वो सब भूलने लगते हैं जो आप जानते हैं या
जिसको जानना इस मोमेंट में बहुत ज़रूरी है. मैं उन दिनों जिसे जानना बेहद ज़रूरी था, उसके आगे कुछ भी
जानने में दिलचस्पी लेने की हालत में नहीं था.
फिर भी मैंने उससे एक सवाल किया, यह जानते हुए भी कि सवाल दिलचस्पी का पहला बयान है. मैंने उससे
पूछा कि इनफिडैलिटी से वो क्या समझती है. सवाल पूछने का यह उपक्रम कुछ जानने से ज़्यादा बताने के
लिए था, ये वो सवाल पढ़ते ही जान गई थी. उसका जवाब वही था जो मैं सुनना चाहता था. पर मैं ये नहीं
जानता था कि खुद का चाहा हुआ जवाब सुनने के बाद मैं खुद अपने साथ नहीं रह जाउंगा. मैं देर तक वो सब
ज़रूरी काम नहीं कर पाउँगा जिनके कारण मैं किसी भी चीज़ में दिलचस्पी लेने से बचता रहा हूँ. हम कितने
भी सख़्त-जान हों, पर अकिलीज़ की एड़ी हम सबके जिस्म में होती है.
उसने मुझे बताया कि वो अगली सुबह दापोरिजो के लिए निकल जाएगी. दापोरिजो के बाद उस से बात नहीं
होगी. वहाँ तक फिर भी मोबाइल के कमज़ोर सिग्नल्स मिलते हैं, पर उससे आगे कुछ भी नहीं. बात शायद अब
से कुछ देर बाद भी न हो. ऑर्डर्स आते ही, हो सकता है मुझे बोट लेनी पड़े. समंदर के भीतर से मैं उसे मैसेज
नहीं कर सकता. वैसे भी हमारे पास बात करने के लिए कुछ नहीं होता, सिवाय यह पूछने के कि दूसरा इन
दिनों कहाँ है. हम दोनों बात करते हुए बेज़ुबान हो जाते हैं. मैं बहुत कुछ उसे बता नहीं सकता. वो बहुत कुछ
मुझसे पूछती नहीं. हम दोनों बहुत कुछ समझते हैं और बहुत कुछ बोलते नहीं. शायद इसीलिए मोबाइल
सिग्नल कमज़ोर पड़ने पर भी कुछ कमज़ोर नहीं पड़ता. मैं तब भी अक्सर खुद को उससे बात करते देखता हूँ
जब खुद से बात नहीं करता. मेरी लाइन ऑफ़ ड्यूटी में किसी से भी ग़ैरज़रूरी बात करना ठीक नहीं होता. पर
फिर भी मैं खुद को उससे बात करने देता हूँ. ड्यूटी पर ही सीखा है कि क़ायदे तोड़ने के लिए ही बनते हैं. और
फिर बिना किसी सिग्नल और भाषा के की गई ये बातें कहीं दर्ज़ नहीं होतीं, और कहीं इस्तेमाल नहीं की जा
सकतीं.
इससे पिछली बार जब उससे बात हुई थी तो वो खासी पहाड़ियों में थी. तब तक मुझे ख़बर हो चुकी थी कि अब
हम शायद मिल नहीं सकेंगे, सालों तक या शायद कभी नहीं. मैंने तय कर लिया था कि अब उसे मुझसे आगे
बढ़ जाना चाहिए. फिर भी एक और बार उसे देखने की चाह में मैंने तस्वीर भेजने को कहा था तो उसने खासी
बच्चियों और अनानास के पेड़ों की क़तारों पर नाचती तितलियों की तस्वीर भेज दी थी. सीधे बताने पर कि
बाकी चीज़ें बहुत देख चुका हूँ, अभी मैं उसे देखना चाहता हूँ, उसने अपनी तस्वीरें भेजी थी. ख़ुश थी वो. इतना
ख़ुश पिछले महीनों में कम ही देखा था उसे. मैं चाहता हूँ कि वो ख़ुश ही रहे. हमारे न मिल सकने के बारे में
जानकर दुखी होगी, लेकिन वक्त के साथ सँभल जाएगी. मैं चाहता हूँ कि वो मेरा इंतज़ार करे, पर मैं यह भी
चाहता हूँ कि अनिश्चितता भरा यह इंतज़ार उसके नाज़ुक दिल पर न आ पड़े. सच कहूँ तो कहीं न कहीं मेरे
भीतर यह डर भी है कि अगर मेरे लौटने पर मैंने उसे किसी और के साथ पाया तो? नहीं, मैंने अपने डर पर क़ाबू
पा कर तय किया था कि उसे मुझसे आगे बढ़ जाना चाहिए. हमें अब और बात नहीं करनी चाहिए. यूँ भी अब
हम बहुत दिनों तक बात नहीं कर सकेंगे, चाहने पर भी नहीं.
पर उस दिन उसके मैसेज ने एक बार फिर मुझे वहीं लाकर छोड़ दिया जहाँ से मैं बड़ी मुश्किल से आगे बढ़
सका था. मुझे कोफ़्त भी हुई थी उसका मैसेज देखने के बाद, और ख़ुशी भी. कोफ़्त इसलिए कि घाटियों,
पहाड़ों में बेफ़िक्री से घूमती इस लड़की को कोई अंदाज़ा नहीं कि मैं किन हालात में, किन सवालों का सामना
कर रहा हूँ. और ख़ुशी इसलिए कि हम दो मैं से कोई तो है जो बेफ़िक्र हो सकता है, सिर्फ इसलिए घर से
निकल कर मीलों दूर जा सकता है कि वहाँ उसका कोई अपना कभी रहा था. बारिश में भीगती पहाड़ियों को
देखकर मुस्कुरा सकता है, घंटों बिना किसी वजह, किसी नदी के किनारे बैठ सकता है. ख़ुश रह सकता है. चाह
कर भी उसे कुछ नहीं बताया था मैंने. सिर्फ वही एक बेवक़ूफ़ाना सवाल किया था कि वो इनफिडैलिटी से क्या
समझती है. इसमें पूछने जैसा क्या था. कुछ भी तो नहीं. मैं जानता था कि सब जानने के बावजूद उसने
मोबाइल पर डिक्शनरी खोल कर इस अंग्रेज़ी लफ़्ज़ का ठीक-ठीक मानी ढूँढा होगा. और उसके बाद थम गए
अपने अँगूठों को एक बार सीधा कर मेरे सवाल का जवाब टाइप किया होगा. इस बार कोलन और क्लोज़
ब्रैकेट वाला स्माइली बनाते वक्त वो मुस्कुराई नहीं होगी. पर जब उसे याद आया होगा कि बिना मुस्कुराए
स्माइली भेज दिया है, तब उसके होंठों पर फीकी सी मुस्कुराहट उभरी होगी, बेचैनी और उदासी को स्वीकार
कर लेने के बाद की उदार मुस्कुराहट.
तिब्बत बॉर्डर पर लगे उस पहाड़ी गाँव तक पहुँचने का रास्ता बता दिया था मैंने उसे. अरुणाचल जाने के ज़िक्र
पर कभी दिल्ली में उसके ड्रॉइंग रूम में बैठे हुए मैंने उस गाँव के बारे में बताया था उसे. आख़िरी मोटरेबल
पॉइंट से चार दिन लगते हैं वहाँ पहुँचने में, जब मैंने बताया था तो उसकी आँखों में चमक आ गई थी. उसकी
ख़ुशी को देखकर मुस्कुराए बिना नहीं रह सका था मैं. दुर्गम जगहों तक जाने, असंभव, अनिश्चित के पीछे
निकल पड़ने का यह शौक़ हम दोनों में साझा था. तुम अगर मेरे प्रोफ़ेशन में होतीं तो मुझ से बेहतर काम
करतीं, मैंने कहा था उसे. उसने कहा था कि मैं वहाँ तक तुम्हारे साथ जाना चाहुँगी. पर आज वो अकेले वहाँ जा
रही थी. अकेले नहीं, किसी और के साथ. किसी और का साथ होना मानी नहीं रखता, मुझे कहने की ज़रूरत
नहीं. मानी रखता था उसका वहाँ जाना. मीलों तक फैले उन अनजाने रस्तों पर पैदल चलना, थकना, रुकना
और ये सोच कर मुस्कुराना कि इन रास्तों से कभी मैं भी गुज़रा होउंगा. मुझे अच्छा लगा था ये सोच कर कि वो
उन रास्तों पर मेरे साथ न होकर भी मेरे साथ चल रही होगी.
हालाँकि अब रास्ते कुछ बदल गए थे. चार दिन का रास्ता दो दिन चल कर तय किया जा सकता था. पर रास्ते
के साथ चलती नदी, अब भी वही थी. मुझे वहाँ गए कई साल बीत चुके थे. सर्विस के शुरुआती दिनों में वहाँ
हुआ करता था मैं. तब अगर उसे मिला होता तो यहाँ लेकर आता. यहाँ तो उसे आना ही था, तब न सही, तो
अब. जो आपके बारे में सबकुछ जानना चाहता है, वो आपके दोस्तों से मिलता है, परिवार से मिलता है. मुझे
जानने के लिए वो पत्थरों और दरख़्तों से मिला करती है. यूँ ही उसका पागलपन मुझे अपने जैसा नहीं लगता.
सीमा के उस गाँव में इंडो-तिब्बतन पुलिस के लकड़ी के क्वार्टर में रुकी थी वो. उसे मंज़िल तक पहुँचने की
सीधी तरकीब आती है. जो करना है, बस कर लो, सोचो मत. वो करती है, बहुत सोचती है, मगर करती ज़रूर है.
क्वार्टर में पहली रात बिताने के बाद सुबह उठते ही उसने चिट्ठी लिखी थी मुझे. वापस लौटकर बताया था
उसने. कहा था मिलोगे तो पढ़ने को दूँगी. मैंने हाथ से लिखी गई चिट्ठी तस्वीरें माँग ली थीं. उसे भेजनी पड़ीं. वो
सोच रही थी कि मैं इंतज़ार नहीं कर पा रहा हूँ चिट्ठी पढ़ने का. उसे नहीं पता था कि मैं नहीं जानता था कि अब
हम कब मिलेंगे कि मैं उस चिट्ठी को छूकर देखने का इंतज़ार कर सकूँ. चिट्ठी में लिखा था, ‘यहाँ पहुँच कर मैं
तुम हो गई हूँ, लेकिन फिर भी मैं अपने से बाहर तुम्हें देखना चाहती हूँ. बाहर और भीतर एक साथ महसूस
करने का सुख अपने में एक ही है’. उससे मिलने से पहले मैंने ऐसी बातें सिर्फ उपन्यासों में पढ़ी थीं. कोई
सचमुच की चिट्ठियों में ऐसा लिखता है, मैंने सोचा ही नहीं था. मेरे लिए कोई ऐसा लिखेगा ये और भी उदास
कर जाने वाला ख़याल था. मेरे पास कुछ नहीं है उसे देने के लिए. अपना आप भी नहीं.
चिट्ठी में उसने जंगली स्ट्रॉबेरी और पहाड़ी बिल्लियों का ज़िक्र किया था, किसी गुम्फा पर जाकर हम दोनों के
लिए प्रार्थना करने की बात लिखी थी. इतना वक्त वहाँ बिताने के बाद भी मैं खुद कभी उस गुम्फा तक नहीं
गया था, जहाँ वो जाकर प्रार्थना के चक्के घुमा आई थी. उसके पास सबकुछ है, मुझे उसे देने के लिए कुछ भी
नहीं चाहिए. अपना आप भी नहीं. मेरा अपना आप वो पहले ही अपने आप में, अपनी प्रार्थनाओं में समेट
चुकी है. उस चिट्ठी को पढ़ने के बाद मैं उससे मिलना चाहता था, उससे कहीं ज़्यादा जितना वो मुझसे मिलना
चाहती थी.
मेरे पास वक्त नहीं था. मुझे जाने की तैयारी करनी थी. जाने से पहले बहुत कुछ बनाना था, बहुत कुछ मिटाना
भी था. मिटाने वाली चीज़ों में उसके निशान भी शामिल थे. मैं उसे बता चुका था कि अब हम बहुत लंबे अरसे
तक नहीं मिल सकेंगे. उसने शिकायत नहीं की. शिकायत की थी उसने मुझसे मेरी बेरुख़ी की, जो मैं बड़े जतन
से अपने और उसके बीच की ख़ाली जगह में भरने की कोशिश कर रहा था. ख़ाली जगह जो अब बढ़ती ही
जाने वाली थी. मैं भूल गया था कि वो मैं हो चुकी थी. और हमारे बीच कोई गुंजाइश नहीं थी किसी और चीज़
की.
मेरे जाने से पहले हम मिले थे. आख़िरी बार मिलने जैसा नहीं था वो. पहली बार जैसा भी नहीं था. वैसा मिलना
कैसा होता है, ये शायद मैं या वो ही जान सकते हैं. कोई और नहीं. हमने बातें नहीं कीं. ख़ामोश बैठे रहे थे देर
तक. हमने एक दूसरे को उस तरह प्यार भी नहीं किया था जैसे आख़िरी बार मिलने वाले एक दूसरे को करते
होंगे. हम बस साथ बैठे थे, चुपचाप. एक-दूसरे के होने को अपने भीतर और सामने, एक साथ महसूस करते
हुए. जाने से पहले उसने अपनी माँ के हाथ की बनी मिठाई का एक छोटा सा टुकड़ा मुझे खिला दिया था. बस.
फिर देहरी तक आकर ज़ोर से बाँहों में भींच लिया था मुझे. मैं जितना उस पकड़ से आज़ाद होकर वापस
अपनी दुनियावी हक़ीक़त में लौट जाना चाहता था, उतना ही उस बंधन में बँधे रह जाना चाहता था. पर मेरे
क़दम मुझे बाहर खींच ले गए थे.
क़दमों पर कई बार शरीर का बोझ नहीं होता, न ही दिल और दिमाग का, कई बार वो सिर्फ ज़िम्मेदारी का
वज़न उठाते हैं. मेरे पैरों को उसी वज़न से नियंत्रित होने की आदत है. वो लड़की मेरी ज़िम्मेदारी नहीं है, ये मैं
नहीं कहुँगा. पर अभी मैं खुद भी अपनी ज़िम्मेदारी नहीं हूँ. मुझ पर हम दोनों से बड़ी ज़िम्मेदारी है, जिसके नाम
पर मैं अपने और उसके लिए ग़ैर-ज़िम्मेदार होने का लांछन सह सकता हूँ. पर वो मुझ पर लाँछन नहीं रखती,
मैं जानता हूँ. इस जानने का वज़न कई बार मेरी साँसों पर भारी हो आता है, पर तब मैं अपना ध्यान अपनी
साँसों से हटाकर वापस अपने क़दमों पर लगा देता हूँ.
आज जागते ही मेरी साँसों में बग़ावत महसूस की है मैंने. कानों में उसकी पसंद की क़व्वाली बज रही है. मैं
उसका नाम लेना चाहता हूँ, पर जानता हूँ कि ले नहीं सकुँगा. इस कहानी में भी नहीं. अभी सुबह नहीं हुई है.
मुझे बिस्तर पर लेटे रहना है. करवट बदलता हूँ तो देखता हूँ कि मेरे शर्ट के कफ में मेरे पास सोई हुई लड़की के
बाल उलझे हुए है. मेरे हाथ उन्हें निकालने के लिए नहीं बढ़ते. मैं बस अपने पाँवों की ओर देखते रहना चाहता
हूँ. मैं याद रखना चाहता हूँ जो कुछ उसने कहा था, जब मैंने पूछा था कि इनफिडैलिटी से वो क्या समझती है.
