“नील! आपका पूरा नाम क्या है?”
“नील आर्मस्ट्रॉंग”
“मज़ाक मत करिए! तमिल नाम?”
“यही नाम है। मेरी पैदाइश उस दिन हुई जिस दिन आदमी चाँद पर पहुँचा। तो माँ–बाप ने यही नाम रख दिया।”
“आप ईसाई हैं?”
“नहीं। हिन्दू हूँ। तुम्हारी तरह।”
“फिर तो यह नाम और भी अटपटा लगा रहा है। नील आर्मस्ट्रॉंग?”, मैं हँसने वाला था, मगर झेंप गया।
“क्यों? तमिल–प्रदेश कभी घूमने जाओ। स्तालिन, हिटलर, केनेडी, लेनिन, रूज़वेल्ट सब मिल जाएँगे।”
“हाँ! लेकिन वह तो भारत में। आप तो श्रीलंका से हैं।”
“हम एक ही हैं। सभी तमिल! क्या भारत, क्या लंका”, इस बार नील कुछ अकड़ गया था। तमिल गौरव की अकड़।
नील की आवाज यूँ भी भारी–भरकम थी। अस्सी के दशक के फ़िल्मी खलनायकों की तरह। हू–ब–हू मोगाम्बो जैसी। बाल सुनहरे घुँघराले। बुलंद काया। यह था एक श्याम–वर्णी तमिल हिन्दू नील आर्मस्ट्रॉन्ग, जो कभी चाँद पर नहीं पहुँचा।
चाँद पर भले न पहुँचा, नॉर्वे तो पहुँच गया। हज़ारों श्रीलंकाई तमिलों के साथ वह भी एक दिन आ गया। यह बात तीस साल पुरानी है, लेकिन यूँ लगता है कि जैसे वह कल ही आया हो। वह और उसके जैसे तमाम प्रवासी, जो शायद कल ही आए। दूसरों को क्या, उन्हें भी लगता है कि वे कल ही आए। वे जब–जब किसी गोरे से मिलते हैं, तो वे पूछते हैं— तुम कब आए? तीस साल बाद भी वह आदमी एलियन नजर आता है। वे भी झेंप कर कहते हैं— मैं तो कल ही आया, आप कैसे मिलते? परसों तो वे कहीं दूर जाफना के एक बस्ती में थे। श्रीलंका में।
नील की पत्नी है जया। वह भी चाँद पर नहीं गयी। वह नील के साथ ही जाफना से नॉर्वे आयी। कितना आसान है न हज़ारों मील दूर दूसरों के देश में आकर यूँ बस जाना? और फिर कभी लौट कर अपनी मिट्टी पर न जाना? नील और जया अगर चाहें तो भी वहाँ नहीं लौट सकते। मैंने कयास लगाया कि उन पर खून करने का इल्जाम है। फिर खयाल आया कि जरूरी नहीं। शायद मामूली जेब काटने का इल्जाम हो। लेकिन जेब काटने की इतनी बड़ी सजा? शायद ये ठग होंगे। हिंदुस्तानी ठग जो तमिल–प्रदेश चले गए। इनके पूर्वज देवी चौधरानी के जमाने के ठग होंगे, जो दक्खिन भागते–भागते लंका पहुँच गए। और फिर ये उत्तर भागते–भागते नॉर्वे पहुँच कर ही रुके। लेकिन, लंका का ठग, जेबकतरा या खूनी आखिर तीस साल से इस देश में कुछ कर क्यों नहीं रहा? क्या उसकी अपराध–विद्या एक दिन विस्मृत हो गयी? मैं रुचिवश शोध करने लगा, और शोध करते–करते कल्पना की उड़ान लेने लगा। उस दिन आकाश में रंग–बिरंगी ऑरोरा बोरियैलिस भी दिख रही थी, जो प्रकृति की कल्पना ही तो है।
नील स्कूली बच्चों को तैराकी सिखाता है, तो जया किंडरगार्टन उम्र के बच्चे सँभालती है। इनका हृदय–परिवर्तन नहीं, मेटामॉर्फोसिस ही हो गया। ये अपने इतिहास को उन्हीं जंगलों में दफना कर आ गए, जिनमें राजीव गांधी ने सेना भेजी थी। शांति–सेना। नील ऑर्मस्ट्रॉन्ग वहीं झुरमुटों में छुप कर किसी बाघ की तरह भारतीय फौजियों पर टूट पड़ता। जया लिट्टे की आत्मघाती दस्ते में थी, और नील कमांडर हुआ करता।
स्विमिंग–पूल में छात्रों को ‘फास्टर! फास्टर!’ कहते हुए नील अक्सर अपने कमांडर रूप में लौट आता है। उसकी छवि किसी छलावरणी वस्त्र में, हाथों में राइफ़ल लिए नजर आने लगती है। शहर के लोगों का कहना है कि तीस साल में ऐसा प्रशिक्षक न हुआ, जिसके छात्र तैराकी में मेडल पर मेडल जीत रहे हैं। तैराकी ही क्या, मार्शल–आर्ट में भी नील का मुकाबला नहीं। कैसे होगी? जिसने थोप्पीगल्ला के घने जंगलों और कंदराओं में गुरिल्ला–युद्ध लड़ते अपना यौवन बिताया हो, उससे शहर के ललबबुए भला क्या लोहा लेंगे?
उन दिनों शांति–प्रिय देश नॉर्वे अपनी नाक श्रीलंका में घुसेड़ कर वहाँ अशांति ला रही थी। ऐसा पुरबिये कहते हैं। पुरबिये यानी तीसरी दुनिया के लोग। लोग कहते हैं लिट्टे के सरगना प्रभाकरण ओस्लो निवास पर रहते, और यहीं से लंका आते–जाते रहते। नॉर्वे के लोगों ने इन कमांडरों को दत्तक–पुत्र बना लिया था। थ्रिल मिलता होगा कि हमारे घर भी एक राइफलधारी गुरिल्ला रहता है, जो लंका के जंगलों में फौजी मारता है। स्पाइडरमैन की तरह एक साधारण स्कूली खेल–प्रशिक्षक कैसे भेष बदल कर ख़ूँख़ार बन जाता होगा! तमिल राष्ट्रवाद का झंडा लिए, भारत और लंका के फौजियों के छक्के छुड़ाता होगा! जिस देश में शांति होती है, उन्हें अशांति की तलब तो होती ही है।
नील और जया का आखिरी प्रोजेक्ट एक भारतीय राजनेता की हत्या था। वह निपटा कर ही वे नॉर्वे आए।

“भारत में वी. पी. सिंह की सरकार गिर रही है”
“तो क्या हुआ?”
“राजीव गांधी फिर से लौटेगा”
“मुझे तो नहीं लगता”
“रिपोर्ट पक्की है। वहाँ यही चलता है। कांग्रेस छोड़ कर कोई टिकता नहीं उधर।”
“क्या प्लान है?”
“राजीव गांधी आया तो फिर से ज़रूर फौज भेजेगा।”
“देख लेंगे। लगता है पिछली बार की दुर्गति भूले नहीं”
“दुर्गति? दुर्गति हुई हमारे अपने तमिल भाइयों की।”
“तो मारना है?”
“हाँ! और कोई रास्ता नहीं।”
“ठीक है! उसके प्रधानमंत्री बनते ही करते हैं।”
“नहीं। फिर मुश्किल होगी। सेक्योरिटी बढ़ जाएगी। सुब्रह्मण्यम और मुथुराज को बुलाया है। वे लोग कोऑर्डिनेट कर लेंगे।”
“मुत्थु? वह तो एक चिड़िया न मार सके।”
“उसको मद्रास का काम संभालना है बस। नील और शिवरासन संभालेंगे बाकी।”
“मतलब स्नाइपर शूट?”
“नहीं! जया! तुम तैयार हो?”
“हाँ! कभी भी। मैं एबॉर्ट कर लूँगी।”
“तुम प्रेग्नेंट कब हो गयी? खैर, तुम बैक–अप में रहो।”
“मेरी दो बहनें हैं। मैं मोटिवेट कर सकता हूँ। कुछ लिट्रेचर चाहिए।”, शिवरासन ने कहा
“ठीक है। वह सुब्रह्मण्यम दे देगा।”
उस मीटिंग के अगले साल उनकी यूनिट नॉर्वे आकर अंडरग्राउंड हो गयी। शरणार्थी पासपोर्ट पर। वही लोग जो किसी की हत्या की योजना बना रहे थे, अब भय के ग्राउंड पर शरणार्थी बन गए थे। इन्होंने यह सिद्ध किया कि उन्हें अपनी सरकार से जान का खतरा है। नोबेल बाँटने वाले दयालु नॉर्वे ने उन पर दया कर अपनी नागरिकता दे दी। उसी टोली में नील और जया भी आ गए। हँसी–खुशी जीने लगे। लंका में तमिल अब भी मरते रहे। बौद्ध देश में अशांति दशकों तक बनी रही। कभी पोप आए, तो ईसाईयों के घर जले। कभी भारतीय नेता ने कुछ कहा तो चार तमिल के घर जल गए। इन जलते घरों की तस्वीरें ‘लिट्रेचर’ में तब्दील होती गयी। उन्हें पढ़–पढ़ कर नित नए शिवरासन जन्म लेते रहे। सब के सब मारे गए। दो–चार नील और जया जैसे लोग बच गए, जो प्रथम दुनिया के गोरे–गोरे बच्चों को तैरना सिखा रहे हैं।
कुछ साल पहले अफ़वाह उड़ी कि लिट्टे का एक कमांडर अब भी जिंदा है। वह स्कैंडिनेविया में बैठ नयी फौज तैयार कर रहा है। उसे सरकारी मदद भी मिल रही है। यहीं शहर में हथियारों की बड़ी फैक्ट्री है। उनके खरीददार तीसरी दुनिया में बैठे हैं। यहाँ से हथियार ले जाकर वहाँ अपनी अस्मिता के लिए लड़ रहे हैं। कुर्द–अस्मिता, कबीलाई अस्मिता, कश्मीरी–अस्मिता, तमिल–अस्मिता। अपनी जमीन, अपनी संस्कृति के लिए। लड़े जा रहे हैं।
नील जब पैदा हुआ था, तो आदमी चाँद पर पहुँचा था। उसके बाद ग्यारह लोग चाँद पर पहुँचे। गुरुत्वाकर्षण की कमी में चाँद पर उछल–उछल कर लौट आए। उनके नाम लिए बच्चे न जाने कहाँ होंगे। यहीं कहीं होंगे। धरती पर। किसी पेड़ पर। किसी तालाब में। कहीं जमीन पर नग्न लोट रहे होंगे। वे लोग जो चाँद पर नहीं जा सके, बच्चों को चाँद पर जाना सिखा रहे हैं।
जया एक पत्रकार को कह रही हैं, “मेरा पति अब कोई कमांडर नहीं। यह अफ़वाह ग़लत है।”
नॉर्वे के मंत्री एरिक सोल्हैम ने भी इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि यहाँ अब कोई ‘स्लीपर–सेल’ नहीं। ट्रेन में यह अखबार पढ़ते जा रहा हूँ, जिसमें यह खबर छपी है। इस ट्रेन में हर तीसरा व्यक्ति क्राइम–थ्रिलर पढ़ रहा है। कभी–कभार उद्घोषिका के स्वर सुनाई देते हैं, अन्यथा शांति है।
