फ़्रेंच लेखिका आमेली नोतों के उपन्यास ‘hygiene and assassin’ का हिंदी अनुवाद प्रकाशित हुआ है ‘एक अधूरा उपन्यास’ शीर्षक से। राजपाल एंड संज से प्रकाशित यह उपन्यास पहले पंद्रह भाषाओं में प्रकाशित हो चुका है। उपन्यास की कहानी में एक नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता लेखक प्रेतेक्सता ताश की मृत्यु होने वाली है और उनसे बातचीत करने के लिए पत्रकार आ रहे हैं। उनके जीवन के राज खुल रहे हैं। बहुत रोमांचक शैली में लिखा गया। फ़्रेंच से हिंदी में संजय कुमार द्वारा अनूदित इस उपन्यास का एक अंश पढ़िए- जानकी पुल।

यह बुरी खबर लोगों तक पहुँची कि एक बहुत बड़े लेखक प्रेतेक्सता ताश दो महीने के भीतर स्वर्ग सिधारने वाले हैं तो दुनिया भर के पत्रकार इस 83 वर्षीय व्यक्ति से भेंटवार्ता की मांग करने लगे। निश्चित रूप से बुजुर्ग ने अच्छा-खासा नाम कमाया था। जब नानकीय बाजारू खबर और बांग्लादेश ऑब्जर्वर (यहाँ नामों का अनुवाद किया जा रहा है) जैसे जाने-माने दैनिकों के प्रतिनिधियों को फ्रेंच भाषा उपन्यासकार के बिस्तर की ओर दौड़ते देखा गया तो आश्चर्य का कोई ठिकाना नहीं रहा। इस तरह से मरने से दो महीने पहले ताश साहब को अपनी प्रसिद्धि का जायजा लेने का अवसर मिला। आए हुए प्रस्तावों में से आनन-फानन में चुनाव करने के लिए उनका सचिव जुट गया। उसने विदेशी भाषाओं के सारे अखबारों को एक सिरे से खारिज कर दिया क्योंकि मरणासन्न लेखक फ्रेंच को छोड़कर कोई और भाषा नहीं बोलते थे और उन्हें किसी दुभाषिये पर भरोसा नहीं था। सचिव ने काले-भूरे पत्रकारों को चलता किया, क्योंकि ढलती उम्र के साथ लेखक ने ऐसी नस्लवादी मान्यताएँ विकसित कर ली थीं जो उनके गम्भीर विचारों से मेल नहीं खाती थीं ताश विशेषज्ञों को शर्मिंदगी हो रही थी और उन्हें लगता था कि यह एक सठियाए हुए व्यक्ति का व्यवहार है जो लोगों को क्षुब्ध करना चाहता है। टेलीविजन चैनलों, महिला केन्द्रित पत्रिकाओं, अत्यधिक राजनीतिक समझे जाने वाले अखबारों के अनुरोध को भी सचिव ने स्वीकार नहीं किया। विशेषकर चिकित्सा-सम्बन्धी शोध-पत्रिकाओं के अनुरोध को भी अस्वीकार किया गया जो यह जानना चाहती थीं कि इतने असाधारण किस्म का कैंसर भला इस महान व्यक्ति को कैसे हो गया जब ताश साहब को पता चला कि उन्हें एल्तसेनवाइवरप्लात्स जैसी भयंकर बीमारी हो गयी है तो वे फूले नहीं समाए। आम लोगों में यह बीमारी ‘उपास्थि के कैंसर’ के नाम से प्रचलित थी, जिसका पता उन्नीसवीं सदी में एल्तसेनवाइवरप्लान नामक एक वैज्ञानिक ने लगाया था। दक्षिण अमेरिका में स्थित फ्रेंच गुयाना की राजधानी केयेन में इसे दर्जन-भर उन कैदियों में पाया गया था जो यौन हिंसा के पश्चात क़त्ल के इल्ज़ाम में बंदी थे। उसके बाद फिर कभी यह रोग देखा- सुना नहीं गया था। इस बीमारी के लक्षण खुद में जानकर ताश साहब को लगा कि उनको अनपेक्षित रूप से अभिजात वर्ग की सदस्यता प्राप्त हो गयी है। ज्यादा मोटे थे और उनके चेहरे पर बाल का नामोनिशान नहीं था। उनकी आवाज़ को छोड़ दें तो वे बिलकुल हिजड़ा दीखते थे। उन्हें डर था कि हृदय-नाड़ी से सम्बन्धित किसी वाहियात रोग से न मर जाएँ। अपना समाधि लेख लिखते समय वे ल्यूतन जाति के चिकित्सक के उस उदात्त नाम का जिक्र करना नहीं भूले जिसकी कृपा से उनकी मृत्यु खूबसूरत ढंग से होने जा रही थी।
सच पूछिये तो दिन-रात कुर्सी तोड़ने वाले इस चर्बीदार जीव का तक ज़िंदा बच जाना आधुनिक चिकित्सा जगत के लिए समझ से बाहर की बात थी। इस आदमी के शरीर में इतनी चर्बी थी कि उसने खुद स्वीकार किया था कुछ वर्षों से उसमें चलने-फिरने की क्षमता नहीं रह गयी थी। आहार विशेषज्ञ के सुझावों को तेल लेने भेजकर वे ठूँस ठूँस कर खाते थे। इसके अतिरिक्त हर रोज बीस हवाना सिगार फूंकते थे। पर वे पीते बहुत हिसाब से थे और एक अरसे से ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन कर रहे थे। चर्बी से खचाखच भरे उनके दिल समुचित तरीके से काम करने के पीछे कोई और कारण चिकित्सकों को नज़र नहीं आता था। उनको लम्बी आयु उतनी ही रहस्यमय लगती थी जितनी उस आयु को खत्म करने वाली इस बीमारी की जड़।
दुनिया में कोई भी अखबार ऐसा नहीं था जो इस आसन्न मृत्यु के प्रचार से विचलित नहीं हुआ था। पाठकों के पत्र में इस आत्मालोचना की अनुगूँज भरपूर सुनाई दे रही थी। कुछ गिने-चुने पत्रकारों ने आधुनिक सूचना-प्रणाली के नियमों के अधीन होकर वही किया जिसकी आशा थी। जीवनी-लेखक गिद्ध की तरह नजर टिकाए बैठे थे। प्रकाशक अपनी पलटन को अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से लैस कर रहे थे। वहीं कुछ बुद्धिजीवी ऐसे भी थे जो सोच रहे थे कि इस जबरदस्त उपलब्धि को अनावश्यक महत्त्व तो नहीं दिया जा रहा, क्या प्रेतेक्सता ताश ने साहित्य में सचमुच कोई नयी जमीन जोड़ी है? कहीं वे कुछ गुमनाम लेखकों के चतुर वारिस मात्र तो नहीं हैं? और अपने कथन की पुष्टि के लिए ये बुद्धिजीवी कुछ ऐसे अज्ञात लेखकों के नाम गिनाते थे जिन्हें उन्होंने स्वयं कभी नहीं पढ़ा और बिना पढ़े भी खूब विस्तारपूर्वक चर्चा करते थे।
इन सारे कारकों के मिलने से इस आसन्न मृत्यु का असाधारण प्रभाव हुआ। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि यह आसन्न मृत्यु लोगों का ध्यान खींचने में सफल रही।
बाईस उपन्यास लिख चुकने वाले यह लेखक एक साधारण-सी इमारत के भूतल पर रहते थे। उन्हें ऐसे निवास को आवश्यकता थी जहाँ हर चीज एक ही तल पर हो क्योंकि एक जगह से दूसरी जगह जाने के लिए वे पहियेदार कुर्सी का इस्तेमाल करते थे। वे अकेले रहते थे और कोई पालतू जानवर भी नहीं था। उन्हें नहलाने के लिए हर रोज लगभग शाम के पांच बजे एक बड़ी जीवट वाली नर्स आती थी। उन्हें बर्दाश्त नहीं था कि उनके लिए कोई और खरीदारी करे। वे राशन-पानी खरीदने के लिए मुहल्ले की किराने की दुकान पर खुद ही जाते थे। उनका सचिव एर्नेस्त ग्रावहलें चार मंजिल ऊपर ही रहता था, पर जितना संभव हो, उनसे कन्नी काटता था। सचिव उन्हें नियमित रूप से फ़ोन करता था और ताश बिना चूके अपनी बातचीत की शुरुआत यही कहकर करते थे, “माफ़ करना एर्नेस्त, अभी मेरी साँसें चल रही हैं।”
फिर भी, एर्नेस्त चुने हुए पत्रकारों से यही कहता कि बुजुर्ग दिल के बहुत अच्छे हैं। वे अपनी आमदनी का आधा हिस्सा हर साल एक धर्मार्थ संगठन को नहीं देते क्या? उनकी यह गुप्त दानशीलता उनके उपन्यासों के कुछ पात्रों में परिलक्षित नहीं होती क्या? बेशक, उनके आतंक का साया हम सब पर रहता है और मुझ पर तो सबसे पहले पर मैं यह मानता हूँ कि इस लड़ाके व्यवहार के मुखौटे के पीछे प्यार-भरी नोक-झोंक है। अपनी फूल जैसी नर्म संवेदना को छिपाने के लिए उन्हें शांत और क्रूर होकर मोटूमल की भूमिका करना अच्छा लगता है। ऐसी बातों से पत्रकारों की चिंता कम नहीं हुई क्योंकि वे वैसे भी अपने भय को बनाये रखना चाहते थे ताकि उन पर युद्ध संवाददाता जैसा हाव-भाव रहे और दूसरे पत्रकार उनसे ईर्ष्या करें।
आसन्न मृत्यु की खबर 10 जनवरी को आयी। पहला पत्रकार 14 तारीख को लेखक से मिल पाया। उसने फ़्लैट में सीधा प्रवेश किया। वहाँ इतना अँधेरा था कि बैठक के बीचोबीच पहियेदार कुर्सी पर बैठी उस मोटी आकृति को ठीक-ठीक देखने में अच्छा-खासा समय लग गया। अस्सी की दहलीज पार किये उस वृद्ध की भावशून्य आवाज मानो किसी कब्र से आ रही थी- नमस्कार। बस इतना भर कहना पत्रकार को सहज स्थिति में लाने के लिए काफ़ी नहीं था, बल्कि बेचारे की बेचैनी और भी बढ़ गयी।
आपसे मिलकर बहुत खुशी हुई, ताश साहब। यह मेरे लिए बड़ी प्रतिष्ठा की बात है।
