साधु समाज पर इतनी गहरी अंतर्दृष्टि वाला लेख पहली बार पढ़ा। आम तौर पर इस विषय को इतिहास, साहित्य में कम ही छेड़ा जाता है। इसको लिखा है नितिन सिन्हा ने। नितिन सिन्हा Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, बर्लिन में सीनियर रिसर्चर हैं- जानकी पुल।

1930 में, एक साधु जिनका नाम धूर्तानंद था, एक रईस सेठ लालाजी के यहाँ पधारे. उन्होंने लालाजी को वचन दिया कि एक तपस्या अनुष्ठान करने के बाद उनका धन दोगुना हो जाएगा. दूसरे दिन सुबह लालाजी को पुलिस स्टेशन जाना पड़ा. मालूम हुआ, विगत रात की तपस्या के बाद साधु फ़रार थे और लालाजी का धन भी ग़ायब था. पुलिस ने बताया कि उस शहर में क़रीब पच्चीस और घरों में ऐसे अनुष्ठान हो चुके थे. ‘गेरुआ डाकू’ नाम से प्रकाशित यह लेख यह बतलाता है कि बीसवीं सदी के शुरूवात में हिन्दी प्रिंट जगत में साधु समाज को लेकर काफ़ी गहरी चिंता बन गयी थी. चूँकि ये लेख एक कहकहा सम्वाद में प्रकाशित हुआ था, इसलिए यह भी दर्शाता है कि आम जगत में साधु एक परिहास और व्यंग्य का चरित्र बन गया था. धूर्तानंद नाम ही काफ़ी था पाठकों को गुदगुदाने के लिए.
समय के परतों को लांघते हुए यह कहना अनुचित नहीं होगा कि जहां तक भेस-भूषा बदल कर छलने की बात है, शायद ही भारतीय समाज में कोई ऐसा प्रतीकात्मक चरित्र होगा जो ‘साधु’ के क़रीब भी आ सके. इतिहास और साहित्य में इसका एक प्राचीन उदाहरण भी मिलता है. रामायण को ही अगर ले लें, सीता हरण के लिए रावण ने साधु का ही भेस धरा था. और दूसरी तरफ़ अगर सबसे तत्कालीन उदाहरण को उठायें, जो पलघर में मॉब लिंचिंग की घटना में परिणित हुई, उसमें भी साधुओं को यह समझा गया था कि वे भेस बदल कर बच्चों का अपहरण करने वाले किसी गैंग से जुड़े हुए थे और उसी मक़सद से गाँव में आए थे.
भारतीय समाज में साधुओं के साथ छलावे का चरित्रांकन हमेशा से जुटा रहा है. दोनों ही भावनाएँ – विश्वास और अविश्वास – एक डोर से बंधी है कि वे छलावा करते हैं या कर सकते हैं.
यह बात ख़ुद में कोई बीस-तीस साल की नयी अभिव्यक्ति की उपज नहीं है. हालाँकि विगत कुछ वर्षों में बहुत से ऐसे मामले सामने आए हैं जिनमें काफ़ी ‘उत्कृष्ट’ साधुओं को सलाख़ों के पीछे जाना पड़ा है. हत्या, बलात्कार, यौन शोषण, हथियार संग्रह, आर्थिक हेराफेरी के मामलों में ऐसे केसेज अधिकांशत घटित हुए हैं। इसी मद्देनज़र, 2017 में, साधुओं के एक संगठन – अखिल भारतीय अखाड़ा परिषद – ने 14 ‘ढोंगियों’ (charlatans) के नाम की एक सूची प्रकाशित की थी. संगठन के अनुसार, इन ढोंगियों ने साधु समाज के नाम पर कलंक लगाने का काम किया है.
छद्मवेशियों का नाम उजागर हो ये बात तो ठीक है लेकिन छद्मवेश को ख़ुद ही थोड़ा और समझने की ज़रूरत है कि कैसे वो हमारे सामाजिक और राजनैतिक पहलुओं से जुड़कर हमारे रोज़मर्रे की ज़िंदगी का एक अभिन्न अंग बन जाता है.
बचपन से शायद सब ने सुना होगा, अंधेरे में बाहर मत जाओ नहीं तो कोई साधु बाबा पकड़ कर ले जाएगा. सुबह या दिन के समय जो परिवार साधु का आव-भगत करे, शायद उसी परिवार का कोई सदस्य शाम होते घर के छोटे बच्चे-बच्चियों को ये नसीहत देते जाए कि बाहर साधु या बूढ़ा बाबा ताक लगाए बैठा है.
विश्वास और छद्मवेश एक ही सोच के जुड़े हुए दो पहलू हैं. दोनों एक ही सामाजिक तनाव और धारणा के मिश्रण से विकसित होते हैं. हम अपने अनुभव के मुताबिक़ किसी एक या दूसरे पहलू के तरफ़ झुकते चले जाते हैं. साधुओं के संदर्भ में ऐसा कहा जा सकता है कि उनके प्रति करिज़्मा और विस्मय उनके अपरिचिकत्ता से जुड़ी हुई होती है. इसके मेल से, कभी उनपर विश्वास पुख्ता होता चला जाता है, और कभी घोर अविश्वास घर कर लेता है.
अवश्य ही, इसका एक राजनैतिक पहलू भी है. भारतीय इतिहास में, राजनीति और धर्म के बीच आँख मिचौली चलती आयी है. कुछ एक दफ़ा, ‘मामलों’ ने ‘कांडों’ का रूप धारण कर लिया है. नब्बे के दशक में चंद्रास्वामी ने सनसनी फैलायी थी. उसके बाद बहुतेरे साधु आए जिनके साथ उच्च राजनैतिक लोगों का संसर्ग रहा. कुछ एक भारत छोड़ कर भाग भी गए, एक नए राष्ट्र की स्थापना के लिए. छोड़ना इसीलिए पड़ा क्यूँकि बलात्कार का मामला दर्ज हो गया था.
वर्तमान में, राष्ट्रीयता के उबाल में साधुओं की चंचलता थोड़ी प्रखर दिखती लगती है लेकिन बीसवीं सदी के शुरुआत में भी कुछ ऐसी ही स्थिति थी.
बीसवीं सदी के प्रारम्भ में हिन्दी जगत ‘कलियुगी साधु’ के प्रकोप से त्रस्त था. कुछ आज के ढोंगी बाबाओं के प्रकोप के ही तरह. जैसे, 1928 के मई अंक में चाँद में छपे इस पत्र को लें. पत्र काल्पनिक है, एक शकुंतला द्वारा अपनी बुआ को लिखा हुआ, जिसमें हिंदू तीर्थस्थानों की गिरते स्थिति पर चिंता व्यक्त की गयी थी. बतौर कारण यह निकल कर आया कि आज कल हिंदू तीर्थ ‘पाँखडियों का साम्राज्य’ बन गया है.
इसी तरह का एक और पत्र लगभग दो साल बाद छपा था जिसमें यह बतलाया गया था कि साधु समाज तामस, अविद्या, और अर्थ-संचार के ग़ुलाम बन गए हैं. १९१६ में, Times of India में एक लेख छपा था ‘A Sadhu’s Wealth’. कलकत्ते के भवानीपुर इलाक़े में एक ‘राजपूत’ ने एक साधु का रूप धारण कर मोटर चोरी का एक गैंग बना लिया था. सी॰आइ॰डी के छापे से ये अनुमान लगा कि सरग़ना का लीडर काफ़ी गोरे रंग का था और वो पाश्चात्य वस्त्र पहन कर मोटर की दुकान में गया था और उसके साथ के चेलों को गाड़ी चलानी आती थी.
अंग्रेज़ी के अख़बारों में और हिन्दी के तमाम लोकप्रिय पत्रिकाओं जैसे चाँद, स्त्री दर्पण, लक्ष्मी, और गंगा में बहुत से लेख इस वक्त में छपे हैं जो साधुओं में आए नैतिक पतन और व्यभिचार पर चिंता या कटाक्ष व्यक्त करते हैं. ‘पहले’ के उत्कृष्ट और पुण्य साधु विलोप हो चुके थे, और आज के नए वाले अधिकतर गेरुआ डाकू थे, ऐसा बहुत से लेखों का सम्मति था. इन लेखों का शीर्षक ही गौरतलब है: ‘भारतवर्ष के साधु’, ‘साधुओं का संगठन’, ‘राष्ट्र का उठ्ठान और साधु समाज’, ‘साधुओं की शिक्षा’, ‘भारत की भावी उन्नति’ इत्यादि. यह मत जड़ ले चुका था कि लोभ और भ्रष्टता को छोड़ उन्हें ‘धर्म सैनिक’ बनाने का ज़रूरत था और इसका रास्ता राष्ट्रीयता से होकर गुजरता था.
‘कलियुग’ विकृतियों के बढ़ने का समय माना गया है. ये ‘पारम्परिक’ सामाजिक स्थिरता के उथल पुथल होने का काल माना गया है. प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार सुमित सरकार ने बतलाया है कि उन्नीसवी सदी के अंत तक, कलियुग के परिकल्पना की एक बार फिर से वापसी होती है. औपनिवेशीकरण द्वारा लाए गए अधकचरे आधुनिकता की अंकुश में बनती हुई नयी सामाजिक संरचना कलियुग के आने का द्योतक बन जाती है. साधुओं की क्षीण होती गरिमा इसके एक प्रमाण के रूप में उभरती है।
1926 का छपी यह कविता साधुओं के बढ़ते व्यभिचार और राष्ट्र के प्रति उनकी ग़ैर मौजूदा सोच को भलीभाँति दिखाती है:
कंचन और कामिनियों पर, रहती इनकी दृष्टि सदा,
बात बात में ये करते हैं, स्वर्ग नर्क की सृष्टि सदा,
रहे राष्ट्र कंगाल, यहाँ तो, होती धन की वृष्टि सदा,
जनता भूखों मरे, यहाँ तो, रहती भोग समस्ती सदा,
अड्डे और अखाड़े तीर्थ, लमपटियों के बने हुवे,
क्या देंगे उठ्ठान हमें जो, स्वयं पाप में सने हुवे.
है नहीं जिनको ज़रा भी ध्यान अपने देश का,
जिनके दिल कुछ भी असर होता नही उपदेश का,
एक अक्षर भी पढ़े लिक्खे नहीं होते हैं जो,
आजकल घरबार तज कर साधु बन जाते हैं वो,
रंग लिए कपड़े कमंडल भी लिया एक हाथ में,
बांध लगोंटी जटा सिर भस्म सारे गाट में.

दूसरी तरफ़, ये कलियुग की परिकल्पना अपने उन्नीसवी और बीसवीं सदी के संदर्भ में ही पैदा होती है. एक तरफ़ उपनिवेशवाद था और दूसरी तरफ़ राष्ट्रवाद की उभरती अनुभूति. साधुओं की नैतिक गिरावट की बात व्यक्त तो होती थी धार्मिक और उनके व्यक्तिगत या सामूहिक संदर्भ में लेकिन उनके सुधार का कार्यक्रम, जो इस वक्त तक लोक बहस में प्रखर रूप से सामने निकल कर आया, राजनैतिक था. ये माना गया कि साधुओं का उत्थान राष्ट्रीयता के पारस पत्थर से ही निखरेग़ा. आज के ‘सेक्युलर’ परिपाटी से शायद ये बात अटपटी लगे लेकिन बीसवीं सदी के शुरूआती दौर में राष्ट्रीयता की परिकल्पना में साधु-समाज का उत्थान सम्मिलित था.
दो बातें यहाँ स्पष्ट कर देनी ज़रूरी है. पहला, राष्ट्र निर्माण में योगदान देने से साधु समाज का भी आवश्यक सुधार होगा, ये बात तभी प्रखर हुई जब हिन्दी प्रिंट जगत में इस बात को माना गया की उनकी मौजूदा स्थिति भ्रष्ट है और उसमें सुधार की ज़रूरत है. साधु समाज के आलोचना के दायरे के अंदर थे, ना कि उससे बाहर. उनकी आलोचना किसी प्रकार की ‘ऐंटी-नैशनल’ गतिविधि नहीं थी, बल्कि उसके ठीक विपरीत, राष्ट्र हित की बात थी.
दूसरी बात, संदर्भ के बाहिर जाकर बीसवीं सदी के पूर्वाध के इस ऐतिहासिक क्षण को देखना इतिहास को थोड़ा रंगहीन करना होगा. दुर्भाग्यवश, ऐसा आजकल अमूमन किया जाता है. साधुओं पर व्यक्त कटाक्ष और चिंता उपनिवेशवाद और जन-आंदोलन पर आधारित राष्ट्रवाद के उद्भव से जुड़े हुए थे. साथ ही, जनगणना की प्रणाली ने एक नया आयाम जोड़ दिया था. अक्सर ये बात इन लेखों में कहा जाता था कि 1911 की जनगणना के बाद ये पाया गया कि भारतवर्ष में क़रीब 50 से 70 लाख साधु थे जिन्हें राष्ट्र निर्माण में प्रयोग में लाया जा सकता था. सवाल फिर यह खड़ा हुआ कि इतनी बड़ी तादाद में मौजूद साधु लोग, जिन्हें मान लिया गया था कि कि वो दूसरों के सहारे ही अपना जीवन यापन कर रहे थे, उन्हें राष्ट्रहित के कार्य से किस प्रकार जोड़ा जाए. एक लेख ने ये भी कह डाला की जर्मनी के कबूतर भारत के साधुओं से ज़्यादा राष्ट्र कार्य में मददगार पाए गए हैं. इतनी बड़ी संख्या में उपस्थित साधुओं का राजनीतिकरण समाज और राष्ट्र के हित के लिए सोचा गया था न कि धर्म के नाम पर उन्माद या विभाजन फैलाने के लिए.
बात दिसम्बर 1920 की है. कांग्रेस पार्टी का सालाना अधिवेशन था, नागपुर में. यह अधिवेशन दो कारणों से महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है. पहला, इस अधिवेशन में असहयोग आंदोलन का प्रस्ताव पारित हुआ था. दूसरा, आधिकारिक तौर पर कांग्रेस ने मज़दूरों की हिमायत की स्वीकृति दी थी. लेकिन एक और भी कारण था.
106 साधुओं ने इस अधिवेशन में हिस्सा लिया था. उन्हें स्वराज के संदेश को दूर छोटे शहरों और गावों में फैलाने वाले गांधीवादी दूत के तौर पर देखा गया था. एक साधु संघ की भी स्थापना की गयी थी. 1921 के अप्रैल में All India Political Sadhu Sabha का निर्माण हुवा था. 15 लोगों की एक कमिटी गठित हुई थी. प्रचार के नियम और क़ानून तैयार होने थे.
ब्रिटिश हुकूमत ने अक्सरहाँ भारत के यथार्थ को रहस्य की दृष्टि से समझा है. उसके इस दृष्टिकोण में रोमांच भी है और थोड़ी कल्पना भी. थोड़ा डर की अनुभूति भी है और अत्यधिक हिंसा का प्रयोग भी. साधु और फ़क़ीर जैसे किरदार सदा से भारतीय राजनैतिक रंगमंच के एक अहम हिस्सा बन कर रहे हैं और उसी प्रकार देखे भी जाते रहे हैं.
याद होगा, 1857 पर बनी फ़िल्म जुनून का वह शुरुआती दृश्य. एक पागल फ़क़ीर ब्रिटिश राज के अंत का संकेत दे रहा है. चाहे वो 1830 का ‘ठगी’ का इतिहास हो या ग़दर में फ़क़ीर की भविष्यवाणी और रोटी का प्रसार, ब्रिटिश राज साधु, औघड़, फ़क़ीर के किरदार से सदा सहमे रहे थे. एक कारण यह था कि ये लोग एक जगह कम देर टिकते थे. घूम-घूम पर यापन करना इनका आम ज़रिया था और ब्रिटिश हुकूमत को ‘बेमतलबी’ घुमंतू जीवनशैली से घोर परेशानी थी.
ये साधु संस्थागत तौर पर कांग्रेस के लोकल मंचों या गुरुकुल काँगरी से जुड़े थे. संस्था की जड़ कितनी मज़बूत थी ये आकलन और ज़्यादा शोध माँगता है. विभिन्न कारणों से बहुत से लोग ‘साधु’ यकायक बन जाते थे. आर्थिक विपदा, घर से विक्षोभ, पश्चाताप, इत्यादि इनमें से कुछ कारण थे. इस पर और शोध की ज़रूरत है लेकिन दिलचस्प ये भी बात है कि तत्कालीन सरकारी दस्तावेज़ों में इन्हें ‘बोल्शेविक एजेंट्स’ के रूप में देखा जा रहा था.
बहुत से साधु असहयोग आंदोलन के समय काफ़ी सक्रिय थे. ख़ास कर के, मज़दूर और किसान वर्ग के बीच ये घूम-घूम कर विभिन्न मसलों पर उत्तेजनापूर्ण भाषण देते थे. अक्सर, इनकी सभाओं में ख़ुफ़िया पुलिस जाया करती थी. इनके भाषणों की अंग्रेज़ी में प्रतिलिपियाँ तैयार होती थीं. इनका चार्ज़शीट तैयार होता था जिसमें इनके घर का ठिकाना, पूर्व पेशा, और मौजूदा स्थिति की रपट होती थी. ब्रिटिश हुकूमत समझती थी कि ये भारत में क्रांति लाने का काम कर रहे थे. झरिया, आसनसोल, जमालपुर, लिलुआ, जैसे औद्योगिक क्षेत्रों में ये तीखे स्वर में भारत की ग़ुलामी को ख़त्म करने का भाषण देते थे. हिंदू-मुस्लिम एकता की बात करते थे और साथ ही गाय-वध पर रोक लगाने की भी.
इतिहासकारों ने ये काफ़ी पुख़्ते तरीक़े से दिखाया है कि ‘गांधी बाबा’ के नाम पर या उनकी जय बोल कर ठीक गांधी के बताए हुए तरीक़ों के विपरीत भी बहुत बार जन आंदोलन का स्थानीय सक्रियता मोड़ ले लेता था. साधुओं की सक्रियता पर भी ये बात लागू होती है.
आंशिक लेकिन महत्वपूर्ण पहलू इनका ‘बहुरूपिया’ होना भी था. ये इनकी छद्मवेशी का ही एक पहलू था कि ये इतने सक्रिय हो पाए.
तत्कालीन राजनीति, समाज, और सरकार ने इस छद्मवेशी को अलग-अलग चश्मे से देखा. राजनीति को लगा की ये 50 लाख साधु गांधी के दूत बन सकते हैं, गाँव और क़स्बों में स्वराज का अभियान तेज कर सकते हैं. समाज ने समझा कि सच्चे धर्म के पथ से ये विमुख व्यभिचारी लोग फिर से अपने और समाज के नैतिक उत्थान में भागीदार हो सकते हैं लेकिन उसके लिए पहले उन्हें राष्ट्र के उत्थान के कार्य से जुड़ना होगा. हुकूमत ने समझा कि गेरुए वस्त्र के अंदर इनमें एक लाल क्रांतिकारी छुपा है.
इतिहासकर भी ज़्यादा इन्हें छूते नहीं हैं. साधुओं के क्रांति और धर्म के समन्वय के बीच उनकी ख़ुद की प्रगतिवादी आधुनिक विचारधारा आड़े आ जाती हैं.
शायद, कुछ असली और कुछ नकली साधु हमेशा बने रहेंगे. रोज़मर्रे की ज़िंदगी में लोग ख़ुद उनसे कैसे रफ़्त रखना है, इसका तरीक़ा ढूँढ लेंगे. साधुओं का राजनीति से जुड़ाव भी कोई नयी बात नहीं है. इतिहास में भी हुआ और आज भी हो रहा है.
पहले, राष्ट्रीयता को एक ज़रिये के रूप में देखा गया था जिससे उनका सुधार हो सके. आज के वक्त, उनके नाम पर ‘हिंदू समाज’ का एकीकृत रूप गढ़ कर अलगाववादी सोच और राजनीति को बढ़ावा दिया जा रहा है. मूल बात यह है कि आज से लगभग 100 साल पहले भी उनके आचरण पर सवाल उठा था, उनके सुधार की बात लोक बहस का हिस्सा बनी थी. हिन्दी ‘public sphere’ को शायद ये आज भी करने की ज़रूरत है.
