सदेई और सदेऊ की कथा
( मूल कथा गढवाल की लोकगाथा है, पर मायके से दूर बेटियों के सहोदर भाई के लिये मूक लगाव और अपने पितृवंश के लिये अखंड स्वामिभक्ति की ऐसी उदास कहानियाँ हर प्रांत में पंछियों सी उड़ती मिल जायेंगी। कहते हैं चैत मास उतपतिया हो रामा! पहाडों में चैत मास आने पर जब बर्फीली ठंड से सिकुडी प्रकृति जागने लगी, तो वनों में घुघुती (फाख्ता) ॠतुरैण के सुर पुकारने लगते हैं, बिलगाई बाछी जैसी बेटियों को मायके न्योतने, और जो न आ सकें उनके लिये मांओं की पकाई भिटौली भाई के हाथ उन तक भिजवाने के लिये। अहा हमारे लिये तू आज भी नानी दाणी नारिंग(छोटी नारंगी) के दाने जैसी है। सपनों में तेरी मुखड़ी देखी तो ‘खुद’ (व्यथा) व्याप जाती है।
बिन भाई की बहनों की व्यथा चैत में अन्य सुर भी उठा देती है। ‘री घुघुती,’ चैत का गीत कहता है, ‘मेरे मायके के वन में मती बोलियो, मेरी पुत्रहीन माँ सुनेगी तो रो पड़ेगी।’
घर घर चैती गा कर दक्षिणा बटोरनेवाले पारंपरिक गायक औजी लोगों की बहार हो रहती है। उनसे ही सुनी ठहरी हमने सदेई सुदेऊ की यह अजब गजब कहानी।)
बहुत समय हुआ एक छोटा सा परिवार पहाड़ के एक सुदूर गाँव में रहता: मां बाप और उनकी इकलौती बेटी सदेई। लड़कों के सौ सौ निहोरे करो तो भी देही चीड़ का छिलुका(नन्हीं छीलन), पर बिन सेवा टहल के भी लड़कियाँ तो सिसूण की झांप जैसी बढती जाती हैं, सदेई की मां ने उसके बाप से कहा। बस। अच्छे घर वर की तलाश शुरू। अगले ही बरस लडैती गुडिया खेलणिया, दुधवा पिलनिया, छाजा (छज्जे) बैठणिया, अंगना खेलनिया नौ बरस की सदेई ब्याह दी गई, दूर गाँव।
यही रिवाज था तब बड़ों का बनाया। उसको कौन तोड़े?
बिन भाई की सदेई विदा हो गई दूर गांव के लिये। यही रिवाज हुआ हवे (अरी), धी बेटी किसके घर टिकी है आज तक बूढियों ने मां को समझाया। महाज्ञानी राजा जनक तक यह जुआ नहीं हार आये थे क्या?
‘रामीचंद-लछिमन जुवरा जीति लाये, जनक जुवरा हारि आये।
बाग न हारे बगीचा न हारे पिया, मेरी धी काहे हार आये हो ?’
बरसों बीत गये सदेई को दो दो बेटे भी हो गये। पर उसके मायके से लेने या तीज त्योहार पर मां के पकाये व्यंजनों की भेंट का टोकरा देने कोई नहीं आया। आता कैसे? मां बाप बुढा रहे थे। रिवाज के अनुसार वे लड़की के ससुराल का तो पानी भी नहीं पी सकते थे। तिस पर घर के गोरू बाछी पडोसियों के भरोसे छोड भी दें, पर चार दिन ऊंचे नीचे पर्वतों के बीच बिना पुल की नदियों और घने जंगलों के बीच से पैदल जात्रा करने दोनो बूढे जनी कैसे जाते?
सास भली न चून की। चैत लगा तो सास भी कभी सदेई को एक ताना जैसा मार देती: ‘इसका भाई हुआ नहीं, साथ की बहुओं के जैसे, घुघुती और दही की हाँडी लाये कौन इसके हेत? हमारे वंश हेत इसने दो दो बेटे जने, पर उनके लिये भी मालाकोट (ननिहाल) से छूचक कौन लाता? हा री बिन भाई की बहन!’
घर से दूर जानलेवा ढलानों पर भैंस के लिये घास छीलती सदेई कभी कुलदेवी भवानी को उलाहना देती और कभी पहाड़ों को सुना कर अपना दु:ख कहती थी:
हो उच्ची डांड्यो, तुम नीसी हो जावा, घनी कुलाडियो तुम छांटी हो जावा,मैं तईं लागी खुद्द मैतुडा की …बाबा जी को देश देखण देवा…
अरे ऊंची चोटियो थोड़ी सी झुक ही जाओ, मुझे बाबा का देस देखने दो।
ओ चीड़ के घने पेड़ों तुम तनिक छोटे नहीं होगे क्या? मेरे भीतर मायके की ‘खुद’ जग रही है।
गांव की और बहुओं को भागीरथी के पानी सी चंचल-खुश खुश अपने भाइयों के साथ मैके जाती देखती सदेई, तो हांडी में उबलते चावल के दाने सी खुद भी मायके जाने को छटपटाती।
अहा आज मेरा भी कोई भाई होता, वह भी दिदी दिदी कहता मुझे लेने आता। फिर बचपन की यादों पर चुहल करते हम दोनो का गांव तक का रास्ता बातों बातों में ही कट जाता।
आखिरकार सदेई ने जंगल एक चौंरी बना ली, और उसमें एक शिलंग का पेड रोप दिया। उस पौधे को वह कहती ‘मेरे मायके का पौधा’ और घास लकडी के बहाने हर दिन थोडी देर उसकी टहल को रुकती।
धीमे धीमे सदेई का पौधा बढा, उसमें टहनियाँ फूटीं और वह जवान हुआ। सदेई बदस्तूर उसके मज़बूत तने पर पीठ टिकाये मेहनत से खुरदुरे हाथों से उसको सहलाती, धूप का सेंक करती अपने सब सुख दुख उससे कहती रहती।
शिलंग के साथ सुख दुख कह कर नियम से सदेई भवानी के मंदिर जाती और भाई के लिये प्रार्थना करती।
आहा रे माया। पानी में फूल डाल पडी भंवर ने धंसाई। कहाँ की धी कहां बह गई, माया ने घुमाई।
धी तेरा घर कहां हो? सब छाया माया।
शायद कभी देवी को दया आ गई होगी, उसके मायके में भाई जनमा। इससे बेखबर सदेई ने शिलंग के पेड़ को बताया, ‘जानता है भुला (छोटा भाई), कल रात मुझको सपने में आकर देवी भवानी ने कहा, जा तेरे भी एक भाई होगा। तुझे भेंटने आयेगा।’
मैंने शीश नवा कर उसको कहा हे देवी, ऐसा हो गया, तब तो तेरे लिये मैं चार चार पाठों की बलि चढाउंगी।
भवानी की लीला। सदेई की मां को बेटा हुआ यह खबर देने कौन जाता? बस नामकरण के दिन माँ ने आंख में जल भर कर बेटी की याद में पुरोहित से सदेवी के भाई का नाम सदेऊ(सहदेव) रखा दिया।
याद तेरी इतनी आई कि मन उजाड़ हो गया मेरी नन्हीं नारंगी। बहता पानी थम भी जाये, मां की छाती जो क्या थमती है?
छोरा भी बहन ही जैसा चेहरा मोहरा लेके जनमा था हूबहू। बहन के बारे में पता चला तो उससे मिलने को भागेगा बिन सोचे कि राह कठिन है खतरे इतने।
डर से मां ने सदेव को सुदेई की बाबत कुछ नहीं बताया।
समय बीता। शिलंग के पेड जैसा मज़बूत कद काठीवाला सहदेव जब जब चैत में और भाइयों को बहनों के लिये सर पर भिटौली का टोकरा लिये जाते देखता, नि:श्वास छोड कर सोचता, अहा मेरी भी कोई दिदी होती, जिसे बुलाने मैं उड़ कर चला जाता। फिर उसकी गोद में सर रख कर मैं भी घाम तापते हुए उससे सारे चैत भर लंबी लंबी बात करता।
सोचते सोचते उसे एक दिन सपना आ गया कि सामने दूर पहाड़ की चोटी पर एक शिलंग के पेड के नीचे बैठी ऐन मैन उसके जैसे चेहरेवाली एक लड़की भुला (छोटे भाई ) कहके उसे पुकार रही है।
उसने सपना माँ को बताया तो उसका चेहरा फक पड गया। स्नेह दुर्बल मन काँप उठा।
यह तुझे किसने भरमाया बेटा सदेऊ?
नहीं मां सच सच बता। तेरी आंख में शिव थान की गगरी जैसे पानी क्यों टपकने लगा?
मां बोली तू कहाँ जायेगा रे बहन से मिलने जिसे तेरे बाबू ने चार पहाड पार ब्याह रखा है। उसकी ससुराल की राह में भयंकर जंगल हैं, जंगलों में खूंखार जानवर हैं, अगल बगल कई कई बिना पुल की नदियां हैं। तुझे राह कौन दिखायेगा? खाई खड्ड नदियाँ कौन पार करायेगा?
मेरी आंखें रास्ता दिखायेंगी। हाथ नदी नाले तैरा कर पार करा देंगे। मेरी शिलंग की डगाल जैसी भुजायें हमलावर जानवरों को मार डालेंगी; हमारे कुलदेवता मेरी रक्षा करेंगे।
इतना कह कर मां की सारी चिरौरी अनसुनी करके सुदेव बहन को भेंटने चल दिया तो बस चल दिया।
सुदेऊ जब जैसे कैसे अपने सपने में देखे शिलंग के पेड के पास पहुंच गया, तो वहाँ खडा हो कर पास दीखते गांव को देखने लगा। दिदी ने देखा नहीं पछाणेगी कैसे उसे?
पास की हर पगडंडी, चोटी पर चील जैसी निगाह रखनेवाले वाले गांव के लोगों ने, चारा लाने गई घस्यारियों ने गांव जाकर सुदेई से कहा, री एक बिलकुल एक तेरे जैसे चेहरीवाला सजीला लड़का तेरे लगाये शिलंग के पेड तले खड़ा है। तेरा भाई तो नहीं?’
मेरा कैसा भाई री? सुदेई की आंखें भर आईं। मजाक मत करो।
आखिर गांववाले सुदेऊ को बुला लाये। शकल इतनी मिलती थी बहन से कि शक की गुंजैश ही न थी। ‘ले ये रहा तेरा भाई।’ सहेली घस्यारिनों ने सदेई से कहा।
भाई ने बहन से कहा तू मुझे सपने में शिलंग के पेड के नीचे खडी भुला करके पुकारती दिखी थी। बस चाह उठी और मैं चार वन पाँच नदी पार कर चला आया तुझे भेंटने।
देवी भवानी दाहिनी हुई हैं, रोती हुई भाई को गले लगाती हुई बहन बोली।
गांववालों, मेरी मनोकामना पूरी हुई। जाओ सबको कह दो कल ही अनुष्ठान करा के कुलदेवी को मैं चार चार तगडे बकरों की बलि चढाऊंगी। फिर भीतर जा कर उसने अपने बेटों को बुला कर कहा, देखो ये रहे तुम्हारे मामा। बडी मुश्किल से हमारे पाहुन बन कर आये हैं। घर ले चलो इनको। पति को सदेई ने तुरत चार बढिया से बढिया बकरे लाने को दौड़ा दिया।
मामा भांजे जल्द ही घुलमिल गये।
अगले दिन अनुष्ठान की तैयारी पूरी हुई। जग्य की आग जगी। खांडा लिये पुरोहित ने कहा बलि पशु लाओ। चार बकरे गले में फूलहार डाले लाये गये।
तभी आकाशवाणी हुई, मुझे पशुबलि नहीं, नरबलि चाहिये।
सब भौंचक्के रह गये। सदेई का मुंह भी उतर गया पर वह बात की पक्की थी। बोली, पतिकुल को मैंने दो दो बंसधर दे दिये, मेरा काम तमाम हुआ। मैं अब खुद अपनी बलि दे दूंगी।
नहीं, आवाज़ आई, स्त्री बलि वर्जित है। तू अपने इस भाई की बलि दे।
भाई की बलि? सदेई का शरीर कांपने लगा। नहीं नहीं, अपने निरपराध माता पिता को निर्बंसिया नहीं बना सकती मैं। कोख का बेटा मिल जाता है, पीठ का भाई नहीं। फिर छोटा भाई तो मेरा अतिथि है। मैं अतिथि हत्या नहीं करूंगी।
आकाशवाणी हुई, तो अपने बेटों की बलि दे।
पछाड़ खा कर सुदेई अग्निहोत्र के पास गिर पडी, अपनी कोख को कैसे सूनी कर दूं देवी भवानी?
रहने दे, आकाशवाणी हुई, मनुखों की तरह तू भी कह दे तूने झूठमूठ प्रतिज्ञा करी थी। क्षमा कर दो।
काम पूरा हो गया तो सब यही करते हैं।
सदेई का सोया सत्व जागा। दृढ सुर में बोली, मैं सदेई हूं। आनवाली हूं। सारा गांव जानता है मैंने कभी छल कपट नहीं किया।
ठीक है, वचन रखने को मैं अपने हाथों खड्ग से बेटों की बलि देती हूँ।
गांवालों के चेहरों पर करुणा छा गई। सुदेई की सहेलियाँ बुज़ुर्ग औरतें बिलख पडीं, बच्चों के दोस्त भी बिलबिला उठे पर सुदेई पर तो चंडी सवार थी। घर भीतर जा कर बच्चों से बोली, चलो खेल के वस्त्र उतारो। तुम्हारा मामा नये कपड़े लाया है, वह पहनाती हूं।
बच्चों को नये कपड़े पहना कर उसने दोनों का माथा चूमा और एक एक वार से दोनो के सर धड़ से जुदा कर दिये।
माँ तो माँ। सोचा एक बार इनका मुंह फिर दुलरा लूंगी। सो उसने सरों को तो एक नरम ओढनी में लपेट कर धर दिया और खून से लथपथ दोनो धड उठाये बाहर निकली।
उसका बाहर आना था कि फिर आकाशवाणी हुई, नहीं, बिन सर के बलि स्वीकार नहीं होती। सरों को भी लाओ!
सुदेई सन्न रह गई। फिर उसने कहा जैसी तुम्हारी माया।
पर भीतर घुसी तो क्या देखती है कि दोनो बालक हंसी खुशी नये कपड़े पहने खेलते हैं।
बाहर आ कर सुदेई ने मूर्ति को हाथ जोडे, मां, तूने परीक्षा लेकर मुझे भाई और बच्चे दोनों दे दिये। अब मुझे कुछ चाहना न रही।
मनुख मर जाते हैं, बस ऐसी सत्त कहानी बच जाती है।
आज भी चैत के महीने में औजी लोग घर घर घूम कर भाई बहन सुदेई और सुदेऊ के सच्चे पिरेम की गाथा गाते हैं।
मरना तो सबने है। फिर भी जीते जी देवी देवता सुरग से जो क्या उतर कर किसी का हाथ पकडने को आते हैं कि तूने अपनी बात को क्यों झुठलाया? पर मनुख का अपना सत्त भी तो है।
हे देबी, दूध का दूध पानी का पानी करनेवाली, हम सबको सुदेई जैसा निडर, अपने कहेपर कायम रहने और बात की लाज रखनेवाला बना।
डरने लगो तो झूठे को सत्त की छाया भी डराती है, डर जाओ तो मतिनाश होता है, मतिनाश हुआ तो अंधेरे मन में छल कपट धुंए जैसा पनप जाता है।
न डरो, तो सत्त की दिये की जोत जैसी जागी रहेगी, उस जोत का उजाला अनहोनी को होनी बना देगा। जैसा सुदेई के साथ हुआ।
नानी यह कहानी कहते तेरी आंखों से आंसू क्यों बह चले?
नहीं रे, कुछ पड गया था। जाओ, सोने जाओ। रात बहुत हुई।
