भोर के घुप्प अंधकार में धैवत को आंदोलित करते भैरव गा रहा हूँ कि शायद कोई करिश्मा हो जाए। छत पर तिरछी खिड़की के शीशे को ताक रहा हूँ कि शायद आज सूर्य उग जाएँ। अलबत्ता आलम यह है कि कमरे के भीतर का अंधकार कमरे के बाहर के अंधकार से कुछ छटाँक अधिक रौशन है। मैं चाहूँ तो बत्ती जला कर इस शुबहे को और पुख़्ता कर सकता हूँ, मगर वह सुबह ही क्या जो बत्ती जला कर नजर आए? आज नहीं तो कल, सूर्य को उगना ही है। वह भी उगे बिना कहाँ चैन से बैठने वाले।
पुणे के एक चिकित्सक मित्र ने रमेश तेंदुलकर की कविता फ़ोन पर सुनायी,
‘सूर्य विश्वाला प्रकाशित करतो
हे एक अर्धसत्यच
अर्द्ध विश्व त्या क्षणी
पूर्ण अंधारात बुदलेले अस्ते’
पूर्ण सत्य तो यही है कि सूर्य विश्व को प्रकाशमय नहीं करता, आधी दुनिया को अंधकारमय करता है। मेरी किस्मत ने मुझे उसी आधी दुनिया में लाकर पटक दिया।
“सुनो! यह आ आ आ आ बंद करो। आज शालोट आ रही है। भूल गए?”
भैरव की शूलताल बंदिश अपने उरूज पर थी, धड़ाम से ‘सम’ पर गिरते-गिरते बची। मैंने बत्ती जला कर सुबह कर ली। पास रखा गुनगुना पानी लेकर गला खखारा। अपनी तनी हुई पीठ को दो अंश अधिक ताना और अपने गले से एक इंच आगे झांकते आदम के सेब को सहला कर मन ही मन कहा, “गुरु! तुमने भी अच्छा गाया। एक दिन तुम मेरी जगह मंच पर गाओगे। ऐसे ही घुप्प अंधेरे में। शायद बनारस के किसी घाट पर किसी उत्सव में, जब तक राजन-साजन मिश्र और भी बूढ़े हो चुके होंगे। तब गंगा किनारे बैठ गाना। जैसे-जैसे तुम्हारे स्वर धैवत से निषाद की ओर प्रस्थान करेंगे, सूर्य क्षितिज से उगता जाएगा। उस वक्त तुम गंगा में डुबकी लगा कर उस आधे सूर्य को तलाशना जो अब भी क्षितिज के नीचे ही है। जो अभी उगा नहीं है।”
किंतु, बनारस तो भविष्य है। वर्तमान तो यह है कि शालोट आ रही है, और मैं भूल गया हूँ। यह भी एक आश्चर्य ही है कि जिस व्यक्ति ने तमाम मर्ज, नुस्ख़े, लम्बे-लम्बे लैटिन नाम, किताबों की फ़ेहरिस्त जेहन में रखा, जिसकी स्मृति का लोहा बड़े-बड़े तीसमार खाँ मानते रहे, वह कैसे भूल गया कि शालोट आ रही है? शायद यह बात कभी दिमाग की सिलवटों में दर्ज ही न की गयी हो। यह ‘भूल गए’ ताना न होकर वाक्य की टेक भर हो, क्योंकि मेरी स्मृति में तो मैं किसी शालोट को जानता तक नहीं। भूलने का तो सवाल ही नहीं उठता।
“कौन शालोट?” मैं तीसरी मंजिल के तिकोनाकार कमरे से चिल्लाया, और मेरी आवाज सीढ़ियों के बीच से गुजरती पहली मंजिल तक पहुँची।
“अरे? शालोट! मेरी दोस्त! तुम्हें बताया तो था।” यह आवाज जैसे सीढ़ी बायपास कर सीधे कानों के परदे पर दस्तक दे गयी।
“हाँ हाँ! शालोट। तुम्हारी दोस्त। मुझे लगता है तुमने यह नाम अभी-अभी जोड़ा है। पहले सिर्फ दोस्त कहा था।” यह कहते-कहते मैं और मेरी आवाज़ साथ-साथ सीढ़ियों से नीचे आ गए।
“तुमने कहा था कुछ स्पेशल बनाओगे। याद करो।” इस ‘याद करो’ में ‘भूल गए?’ की पुनरावृत्ति थी।
मैंने अपनी याद्दाश्त पर लगे आरोप-प्रत्यारोप को धत्ता बताते कहा, “हाँ! मैंने सब सोच रखा है। मैंने तिवारी से बात भी कर ली।”
“कौन तिवारी?”
मैं अकचकाया कि यह पूछने का अधिकार तो मुझे भी था।
“जैसी तुम्हारी दोस्त शालोट। वैसा ही मेरा यार मुन्ना तिवारी। दुबई वाला?”
“तुम्हारे यारों की लिस्ट इतनी लंबी है कि कितने याद रखूँ? अब सोच रखा है तो बना लेना। वे लोग बारह बजे तक आ जाएँगे।”
“ठीक है। वैसे ये शालोट नाम तो फिरंगी लगता है।”
“बस नाम शालोट है, चेहरे से पूरी सांवली सावित्री। गोवा से है वह।”
“यह नस्लवादी बात कर दी तुमने। वह भी सुबह-सुबह? तुम्हें मालूम है अब मैं नस्लवादी नहीं रहा।”
“अब नहीं रहे मतलब?”
“मतलब कुछ नहीं। यह बताओ कि शालोट का पति फिरंगी तो नहीं?”
“हाँ! वह नॉर्वेजियन है। सुमित।”
“ये कैसे-कैसे लोग हैं? एक शालोट है जो भारतीय है, एक सुमित है जो फिरंगी है!”
“सुमित बचपन में ही गोद ले लिया गया था। यहीं पला-बढ़ा। उसके माता-पिता नॉर्वेजियन हैं।”
“और रेसीपी दे रहे हैं दुबई से मुन्ना तिवारी!” मैंने ठहाके लगाते कहा।
“इस तिवारी ने तो जरूर शाकाहारी रेसीपी दी होगी।”
“क्यों? चम्पारण का तिवारी है। सौ प्रतिशत मटनहारी।”
“लेकिन, मटन तो घर में है ही नहीं”।
“वह सब मैंने इंतजाम कर रखा है। बशीर भाई ओस्लो गए थे। लेते आए।”
“तुम और तुम्हारे बशीर भाई! बकरे के बदले मेमना न उठा लाए हों।”
“अब मेमने-बकरे का फ़र्क़ क्या हम हिंदुस्तानी सिखाएँगे? कमाल करती हो! यह तो उनका खानदानी पेशा होगा मीरपुर में। किस्मत पलट गयी तो डाक्टर बन गए”।
“देख कर तो कसाई नहीं लगते”
“देख कर भला कसाई ही कहाँ कसाई लगता है। वैसे यह सुमित देख कर कैसा लगता है? सुमित या स्टीव? कहते है गोरों के बीच पल कर भूरे भी गोरे हो जाते हैं”।
“अब यह मालूम नहीं। मैं पहले कभी मिली नहीं।”
बाहर बर्फीली ओस गिरी थी, जिसके नीचे कुछ कुम्हलाए से घास अपने होने का अहसास करा रहे थे। मैं जैकेट-टोपी पहन कर बशीर भाई के घर निकला ही था कि बशीर और उनकी तोंद सामने से चले आ रहे हैं। तोंद मेरी भी है, लेकिन बशीर भाई की तोंद चार इंच ज्यादा है।
“सलाम वालेकुम बशीर भाई!”
“वालेकुम सलाम! आज सुबह सुबह?”
“आप भी तो सुबह सुबह?”
“मैं तो रोज सैर पर निकलता हूँ। सोचा कि आपको गोश्त दे आऊँ।”
“आपकी भाभी कह रही थी कि मेमना ले आए होगे।”
“नहीं जी नहीं। बकरी खुद कटवायी है सामने।”
“कटवायी है या खुद ही पकड़ कर काट लाए?”
“अब कटा तो हलाल ही है। झटका काटते हैं नॉर्वेजियन। उनसे कटवा लेते?”
“यह बकरी इस मुल्क में आप पाकिस्तानियों की वजह से ही कटती है। मालूम है?”
“हाँ! सब मालूम है डाकसाब! एक लतीफ़ा सुनें!”
“नहीं नहीं। अभी आपके वाहियात लतीफ़े सुनने का वक्त नहीं है। फिर कभी।”
“सुनिए तो सही। यह लतीफा नहीं है, शे’र है।”
“चलिए, इरशाद!”
“अर्ज किया है। काग़ज पर लिखी ग़जल…काग़ज पर लिखी…”
“ग़जल! वाह!”
“बकरी चबा गयी। काग़ज़ पर लिखी ग़जल बकरी चबा गयी…चर्चे हुए शहर में!”
“बकरी शेर खा गयी”
“आपने सुन रखी है?”
“आपको क्या लगता है कि ऐसे वाहियात शे’रों का ठेका बस लाहौर ने ले रक्खा है।”
“अच्छा सुनो! आज खाने पर नहीं आ सकूँगा। किसी और को दावत दे रखी है।”
“दावत तो हमने भी दे रखी है।”
घर पहुँच कर मैं बरामदे में बार्बेक्यू-स्टैंड पर अलाव जलाने की तैयारी में जुट गया। जावा द्वीप के एक मित्र ने मिट्टी का चौकोर मटका तोहफ़े में दिया था। यह कोई ताज्जुब की बात नहीं, जापान में तो तरबूज भी चौकोर होते हैं, तो जावा में मटके क्यों नहीं? उसने कहा था कि इसमें भाप वाली शामन मछली पकाना। मैं एक साल तक ताख के ऊपर रख कर भूल गया था। हालांकि वह मटका मुझे रोज रियाज़ के वक्त घूरता रहता, और मैं उसे। हम दोनों एक-दूसरे का प्रयोजन भूल गए थे। उस इंडोनेशियाई मटके भी नहीं सोचा होगा कि उसके गर्भ में चम्पारण का अहुना मटन पलेगा। बशर्तें कि वह मटका हज़ारों वर्ष पहले चम्पारण की सैर कर चुका हो। मेरा व्यक्तित्व जानने वाले यह जानते हैं कि मैं सौ-हज़ार साल की बात यूँ करता हूँ जैसे कल की बात हो।
“कैसे हो?”, मेरे अधेड़ सूडानी पड़ोसी ने बाड़ की दूसरी तरफ से पूछा। यह सवाल वह साल में एक या दो बार ही पूछते हैं, और फिर अपनी सूडानियत में कहीं गुम हो जाते हैं।
“ठीक हूँ। बकरी का मांस पका रहा हूँ। आपने चखा है?”
“हूँ”, उन्होंने लगभग बुझे मन से कहा, और अपनी सिगरेट बुझा कर अंदर चले गए। मैं भी कुछ भोजपत्र की लकड़ियों को चीर कर छोटा करने लगा।
“…हमने तो खूब खाया है। अब भी खाते हैं।” उन्होंने अचानक लौट कर कहा, और इस बार उनकी खिली बाँछें देख कर मैं अचम्भित हो गया।
“लेकिन यह अलग तरह का मांस है। मिट्टी के बर्तन में पकता है।”, इस बार मैंने उनकी बात को अनदेखा किया।
“हाँ हाँ! सारे मसाले डाल कर बर्तन बंद कर दो। वही न?”, उन्होंने पुन: चकित किया।
“लेकिन यह तो भारत के एक ख़ास स्थान की ख़ासियत है।”, मैंने ख़ास पर जोर देते हुए कहा।
“भारत में भी बनाते होंगे। सूडान में भी बनता है।”, उन्होंने बात पर मिट्टी डालते कहा।
“यह तो नॉर्वे में भी बनता है”, मेरी पत्नी ने बात पर पड़ी मिट्टी पर ढेला फेंकते कहा।
“नॉर्वे में आखिर कैसे अहुना मटन बन सकता है? यह चम्पारण की डिश है।”, मैंने लगभग भड़कते हुए कहा।
“यह तो यहाँ का राष्ट्रीय भोजन है। माँस में काली मिर्च और खरे मसाले डाल कर एक पत्तागोभी डाल दो और बर्तन को आटे से सील कर दो। तीन घंटे धीमी आँच पर छोड़ दो!”
“अब इसमें पत्तागोभी कहाँ से आ गया? यह अहुना मटन है। हर मिट्टी के बर्तन में बनने वाला मांस अहुना नहीं होता।”, मैंने सारी दलीलों को ख़ारिज कर कहा।
“मगर ऐसे भोजन दुनिया भर में बनते तो हैं। इनके सूडान में भी बनता है।”
एक पल में मेरा संपूर्ण श्रम और चिंतन जैसे अपना वजूद तलाशने लगा। जैसे थॉमस अल्वा एडीशन बल्ब का आविष्कार कर उत्साहित हों, और उन्हें कहा जाए कि ऐसे बल्ब तो घर-घर में जलते रहे हैं। संभव है जलते भी रहे हों। लेकिन, यह अहुना तो चम्पारण की ही खोज है, बल्कि बल्ब से बड़ी खोज है। मेरे तर्क को अब बौद्धिक संदर्भास्त्र की आवश्यकता थी। मैं अलाव, मटका और मांस त्याग ऊपर अपने रियाज़ की जगह पर धुनी रमाने लग गया।
कुछ देर कंप्यूटर की खिटर-पिटर के बाद मैं चिल्लाया, “यह सिंध प्रांत से चंपारण गया!”
कुछ देर बाद मैं फिर से चिल्लाया, “यह दरअसल चंगेज़ ख़ान के किरात मूलक वंशज लेकर आए”
मैं आखिरी बार उत्साहित होकर चिल्लाया, “यह नागालैंड के सूमी आदिवासियों के अहुना उत्सव से जन्मा! बस यही सही है। मुझे उत्तर मिल गया।”
मैं ये सभी साक्ष्य अपनी जेब में खोंस कर ला रहा था, और साक्ष्य सीढ़ियों पर गिरते जा रहे थे।
“शायद वे लोग कुछ जल्दी आ जाएँ। वे निकल चुके हैं।”, उसने कहा और मेरे बिखरे हुए साक्ष्य टका सा मुँह लिए मुझे देखते रह गए।
“तुम्हारे मन में यह प्रश्न नहीं उठता कि कोई चीज कहाँ से आयी?”, मैंने पूछने की शैली में पूछा।
“उठता है। कई बार उठता है। यह जो आदमी मेरे सामने खड़ा है, वह आखिर किस ग्रह से आया?”, उसने जवाब देने की शैली में जवाब दिया।
मैं किस ग्रह से आया हूँ? यह प्रश्न मेरे शरीर के कण भी कई बार पूछते हैं। ख़ास कर मेरे डीएनए में पिरोए हुए नाइट्रोजन। मैं उन्हें कहता हूँ कि तुम प्रोटीन से आए, जो मैं मांस रूप में खाता हूँ। वे पूछते हैं कि मांस में वह कहाँ से आया? मैं कहता हूँ कि बकरी ने जो पौधे खाए, उनसे आया। और पौधों में? मिट्टी में दबे नाइट्रोजन से। और मिट्टी में? इसका जवाब ढूँढते हुए मैं सूर्य की ओर देखने लगता हूँ। करोड़ों वर्ष पूर्व एक सूर्य की तरह ही तारा जब बूढ़ा हो चला तो सुपरनोवा बन कर फट पड़ा। उसके अंश ब्रह्माण्ड में बिखर गए, और कुछ टूट कर पृथ्वी पर आ गिरे। वही डब्बा-बंद नाइट्रोजन लेते आए, जो मिट्टी से पौधे में गए, पौधे से बकरी मे, और बकरी से मेरे शरीर में आ गए। मैं, मेरी पत्नी, यह सूडानी और दुनिया के तमाम लोग उसी तारे के टुकड़ों से बने हैं। यह रहस्य मैं अपनी किसी किताब में खोलूँगा, और उसी किताब में एक अध्याय में इस अहुना-द्वंद्व को भी सदा के लिए समाप्त कर दूँगा। इस निश्चय को मैं बनारस के मंच पर राग भैरव गाने के निश्चय के साथ फिलहाल नत्थी कर देता हूँ।
अगले कुछ मिनटों में अहुना मटन का भविष्य किसी चुनाव की मतपेटी की तरह मिट्टी के बर्तन में सील हो गया। अब मेरे पास न उसे लारने की स्वतंत्रता थी, न बघारने की, न ढक्कन खोल-खोल सूँघने की, न स्वाद लेने की। मैंने सरसों तेल शायद कुछ अधिक डाल दिया? तिवारी ने भी इस विषय पर स्पष्ट राय नहीं दी थी। उसने किसी हारी हुई पार्टी के चुनावी प्रवक्ता की तरह कहा था कि निष्कर्ष कई बिंदुओं पर निर्भर करता है। लेकिन, यह नहीं बताया कि वे बिंदु आखिर हैं क्या? खैर।
“देखना! शायद वे लोग आ गए। गाड़ी पार्क करवा देना।”, यह सुन कर मैं बाड़ के दरवाजे से निकल कर बर्फीली ढलान में लुढकते-फिसलते उनकी गाड़ी तक पहुँचा।
“टेक राइट फ्रॉम दैट वाइट डोर!” मैंने सुमित को कहा।
सुमित वाकई सर से गर्दन तक फिरंगियों की तरह गोरा था। बाकी का तन ढका था। गोरा ही होगा। शालोट सांवली नहीं थी, काली थी। मैं अब रंग में ग़लतियाँ नहीं करता। यूँ भी अब मेरी पहचान मेरा रंग ही है। मेरे सूडानी पड़ोसी की तरह?
मेहमानों को घर लाकर मैं सीधे बाहर पक रहे मटन के पास ले गया। मुझे लगा कि इससे आगंतुक आश्वस्त हो जाएँगे कि भोजन की व्यवस्था है। यह नॉर्वेजियन नियम भी है कि ड्राइंग-रूम में न बिठा कर सीधे भोजन की मेज पर बिठा दिया जाए। ख़्वाह-म-ख़्वाह के लटारम्भ नहीं। लटारम्भ कोई आंचलिक शब्द नहीं, यह नाट्यारंभ का अपभ्रंश है। ‘सैकड़ों’ वर्ष पूर्व मूल नाटक से पहले घंटा भर नाट्यारंभ ही चलता, और दर्शक जब इस प्रतीक्षा में पक चुके होते कि नाटक शुरू कब होगा, तब जाकर कहीं पात्र मंच पर आते। यह साक्ष्य मुझे भरत मुनि के नाट्यशास्त्र पर आधारित एक ट्वीट में मिला, जो किसी भरतमुनि नामक अप्रमाणित एकाउंट से ही किया गया था। उस वक्त मैंने झट से रीट्वीट कर तथ्य का अनुमोदन कर दिया था।
“तुम्हें पता है सुमित, यह भारत के चम्पारण का ख़ास मटन है?”, मैंने नाटक सीधे शुरू करते कहा।
“नहीं। चम्पारण?”
“वहीं जहाँ गांधीजी ने सत्याग्रह किया था?”
“लेकिन वह तो शाकाहारी थे? बकरी का दूध पीते थे?”
“उन्हें किसी ने यह खिलाया होता तो वह शाकाहारी न होते। शाकाहारी तो तिवारी भी था।”
“कौन तिवारी?”
मैंने भी आखिर कैसे तिवारी को गांधी के साथ तौल दिया? मुझे न जाने क्यों लगा कि वह गांधी को जानता है तो तिवारी को भी जानता होगा। दुनिया में मेरे अलावा तिवारी को जानता ही कौन है? मेरी पत्नी भी तो नहीं जानती। चम्पारण से परिचय गांधी का है, तिवारी का नहीं। भले तिवारी और उसकी पिछली सात पुश्तें चम्पारण की मिट्टी में मर-खप गयी हों।
“अरे छोड़ो तिवारी को। यार है मेरा। तुम दोनों कब और कहाँ मिले? यह सुनाओ!”
“अरेंज मैरेज़”
“क्या? नॉर्वे में?”, मैंने चौंक कर पूछा।
“नही। भारत में। शादी एजेंट के माध्यम से।”
“नॉर्वे के एक लड़के ने गोवा की एक लड़की से यूँ ही शादी कर ली?”, मैंने अपने प्रश्न से ‘काली’ शब्द को नहीं आने दिया।
“तुम यही पूछना चाहते हो न कि इस काली लड़की से कैसे शादी कर ली?”, शालोट ने हँसते हुए उस शब्द को मेरे हलक से निकाला।
“नहीं नहीं। यहाँ इस तरह के विवाह होते नहीं। इसलिए पूछा।”
“इसे एक भारतीय लूथेरान ईसाई से शादी करनी थी। बस।”
“लेकिन गोवा में तो कैथोलिक…”
“तभी तो। लाखों में बस एक मैं ही थी। मेरी भी शादी नहीं हो रही थी, और इसे भी कोई मिल नहीं रहा था।”
“कमाल चीज है न यह अरेंज्ड मैरेज! तुम दोनों का भविष्य कुछ यूँ बंद था जैसे इस मटके के अंदर मटन”, मैंने बशीर भाई के अंदाज़ में लतीफ़ा ठोका।
“ऐसा नहीं है। हम कई बार मिले भी। मैं भारत जाता रहता था। हमने एक दूसरे को पसंद किया।”
“तुम पहले भी कभी भारत गए? जड़ें तलाशने?”
“तुम क्या पूछना चाहते हो?”, यह वाक्य उसने फिरंगी अंदाज़ में ही अकड़ कर कहा।
“नहीं। कुछ नहीं। बस यूँ ही।”
“हाँ! मैं अपनी जैविक माँ से एक बार मिल चुका हूँ।”
“अच्छा है”
“फिर कभी नहीं मिला। मेरे माँ-बाप तो यहीं हैं।”
“हाँ हाँ! उन्होंने तो यह निर्णय सोच-समझ कर ही लिया होगा।”
“मैंने उनको पहले नहीं देखा था। वह शायद मेरे पैदा होते ही अनाथालय में छोड़ गयी थी। मुझे तो नाम-पता भी एजेंसी से ही मालूम पड़ा।”
“कोई वजह रही होगी।”
“वह किसी राजा की रखैल थी।”
“अरे नहीं। अब कहाँ राजा-महाराजा?”
“राजा की फैमिली होगी। मुझे पता नहीं मेरे जैविक पिता कौन हैं? मेरी माँ तो जंसी में रहती है।”
“झांसी?”
“हाँ हाँ!”
“झांसी से आगे तो रजवाड़े ही रजवाड़े हैं। पन्ना है। मैहर है। ओरछा है। ग्वालियर है। इनमें कहाँ कहाँ ढूँढोगे? तुम्हें पता है झांसी की कहानी भी दत्तक पुत्र से…”
“जो भी पिता हो, मुझे नहीं जानना”
मैं इस उत्तर से कुछ सहम गया। उसे नहीं जानना कि उसके पिता कौन हैं। उसके शरीर के डीएनए कहाँ से आए? मेरे कद का और मेरी उम्र का व्यक्ति इस प्रश्न से मुक्ति पा चुका है? शायद वह जानता है कि वह भी उसी ग्रह से आया है, जिससे मैं आया हूँ। एक ही तारे से टूट कर। उसी से शालोट भी तो आयी है, जिसका रंग शायद सांवला ही है। मुझे सूर्य की अनुपस्थिति में वह काला दिख रहा था। अगर वह किसी और गोलार्द्ध में होती, जहाँ सूर्य कुंडली मार कर बैठे होते तो वह गोरी होती।
“मैं इंडिया कुकबुक से कभी-कभी खाना बनाता हूँ। यह रेसीपी उसमें है?”, सुमित ने पूछा।
“शायद होगी। मैं पूछ कर बताऊँगा। उसके लेखक मेरे ख़ास दोस्त हैं। मैं हिन्दी लेखक भी हूँ।”, मैंने ख़ास और लेखक पर जोर देकर कहा।
“हिन्दी लेखक हो तो क्या सबको जानते हो?”, मेरी पत्नी ने मेरा घमंड तोड़ते कहा।
“अरे, यह देखो! उन्होंने मेरे ट्वीट को रीट्वीट किया है। मेरे बहुत अच्छे मित्र है…”
