लगभग रोज, बहुत सुबह, एक उम्रदराज आदमी अपने पाँच घोड़े-खच्चरों के पीछे खरकिया की ओर जाता है. सूखी घास के डंठलों जैसी झुर्रियां चेहरे को पूरी तरह ढक चुकी हैं लेकिन आवाज बच्चों जैसी है, वह नमस्कार के बाद स्कूली बच्चों की तरह जुड़े हाथों को जरा देर चेहरे के सामने थामे रखता है. परिचय होता है, यह इस इलाके का सबसे पुराना गाइड और पर्वतारोहण के इतिहास में न चाहते हुए भी याद किए जाने वाले कई अभियानों में जिंदा बच आया जातोली गांव का रूप सिंह है.
ज्यादातर मर्द विनम्रता को जीवन जीने में सहायक मानसिक उपकरण या छिपकली की पूंछ की तरह अपने व्यक्तित्व से जोड़कर रखते हैं लेकिन वह इस आदमी के भीतर से फूटती लगती है. रूप सिंह कमीने से कमीने आदमी के भीतर की अच्छाई के जागने की प्रतीक्षा बहुत दिन करता होगा और अंततः जीत जाता होगा, न जीतता हो तो भी खुद को हर हाल मे शांत और साबुत महसूस करता होगा. मैं उसकी चौड़ी कलाईयों पर उभरी नसों के जाल में उलझा हुआ पूछता हूं, आपकी उम्र कितनी होगी?
वह रुक कर मुस्कराता है, “मेरा उमर सोरसत्ती (सड़सठ) हो गया.”
उसके गांव जातोली के रास्ते में पड़ने वाले रिटंग थोक का बूढ़ा भगवान सिंह रौनकी बंदा है. एक दिन रास्ते में दुआ सलाम के बाद उसने अपना हुक्का मेरी तरफ बढ़ा दिया, गप होने लगी. मैने पूछा, “इस घाटी में सबसे बूढ़ा आदमी रूप सिंह होगा, या उससे भी अधिक उम्र का कोई और जिंदा है?”
वह हंसने लगा,”बूढ़ी औरत से शादी कर लिया इसलिए बूढ़ा हो गया, अरे वो तो मुझसे भी छोटा हुआ, कोई दस-पंद्रह साल. बकरी चुगाते थे तो हमारे पीछे आता था, गड्ढा आ जाए तो उसको गोद में उठाकर पार कराना हुआ.”
फिर भी यह कोई मामूली बात नहीं कि इस उम्र में रूप सिंह कुछ महीने पहले एक पुराने बंगाली क्लाइंट के साथ पिंडर घाटी को तिब्बत से जोड़ने वाले प्राचीन व्यापारिक रास्ते के मुहाने, ट्रेल पास तक हो कर आया है. शायद पुराने ट्रैकर उसके पास अपने जवानी दिनों को याद करने के लिए आते होंगे जब हिमालय का जादू नया नया था. मैं पूछता हूं, “इतने दिन बाद आपके पास बंगाली ही क्यों आया, गुजराती, मराठा या दिल्ली वाला क्यों नहीं?”
“अब तो सब आने लगे लेकिन पहले ट्रैकिंग करने सिर्फ बंगाली आता था, जैसे मम्मी-पापा होता है वैसा ही हमारे लिए बंगाली है.”, रूप सिंह कहता है.
उसे लगता है इजा-बूबू कहने से मैं बात समझ नहीं पाऊंगा या शायद कह रहा हो कि बच्चों को पॉकेटमनी तो मम्मी-पापा के जमाने में ही मिलनी शुरू हुई है. वह 1970 में जब सोलह साल का छोकरा था, घर वालों से छिप कर भनोटी दुर्गाकोट गया था. कलकत्ता के आसनसोल क्लब के पैंतालिस बंगालियों का ग्रुप था, एक महीने की यात्रा थी, वे अपने साथ दार्जिलिंग की तरफ के चार शेरपा लाए थे. दो लोकल गाइड थे, लोहार खेत के चौड़ा गांव के पान सिंह भोटिया और लछम राम. बंगालियों के साथ एक लूला शेरपा कुक था, उसने उसे खाना बनाना, बर्फ में चलना और टेन्ट लगाना सिखाया. तब कुली को खाना अपना खाना होता था, चाय अपनी पीनी होती थी, रोज आठ रूपए की सूखी दिहाड़ी मिलती थी, जिस समय साहेब बोले घड़ी का कांटा देखकर तैयार खड़े रहना होता था. तब मिडिल क्लास पर्वतारोहियों की दुनिया में सामंती युग चल रहा था.
रूप सिंह की इस उपमा का असर यह हुआ कि मैं सामने के रास्ते से गुजरने वाले बंगालियों को गौर से देखने लगा.
दऊ में एक हफ्ता मसाला चाय नहीं मिलती क्योंकि देबू कलकत्ते के दो आदमियों के साथ ऊपर गया है. वे उसी के घर में ठहरे भी हैं. अब चाय भी लाल सिंह को बनानी पड़ती है, रम के रोज वाले कस्टमरों की भीड़ संभालने के चलते टाइम की किल्लत है. देबू के लौटने के बाद कोलकाता हाईकोर्ट के युवा वकील शुभ्रो और एक पुरातन आदमी से मुलाकात होती है, दोनों चरस के शौकीन हैं. उस आदमी के व्यक्तित्व में समर्पण और अधिकार का जैसा सहज घालमेल है उससे लगता है वह ऐसा पुराना खानदानी नौकर या गरीब रिश्तेदार होगा जिसने शुभ्रो को पाला है.
मैं शाम को शुभ्रो के कमरे में जाकर एक सिगरेट और एक चाय पीता हूं, उम्दा माल है, हेलीकाप्टर प्रचंड वेग से चल पड़ता है, मुझे दोबारा गिरने का डर जकड़ लेता है. सीढ़ियां उतरने में अतिरिक्त सावधानी और पैरों की जड़ता देखकर वे दोनों मुझे बारिश में छोड़ने जैकुनी तक आते हैं. मैं पूछता हूं, “तो आपने ऊपर क्या देखा?”
बेहद लंबी चुप्पी के वजन को ढोते हुए हम तीनों चलते रहते हैं, शुभ्रो ने अचानक कहा,”सुंदरढूंगा के बुग्याल में उस रात टेन्ट से बाहर माथा निकाल कर लेटे हुए लगा, आज की रात का आसमान सिर्फ हम तीन लोगों के लिए है.”
वे लौट गए.
मैने कल्पना में शुभ्रो, देबू और पुरातन को सुंदरढूंगा घाटी में लेटे देखा, एक बात तो तय है कि उस रात वहां आसपास कोई और टेन्ट नहीं लगा था, बर्फीली चोटियों की चहारदीवारी के बीच जितना आकाश अंट सकता है उसे शुभ्रो ने देखा और उस पर आधिपत्य महसूस किया. क्या ट्रैकिंग कोई पॉवर गेम है, क्या जान का जोखिम और इतने कष्ट सिर्फ थोड़ी देर के लिए अनछुई प्रकृति पर मालिकाने के आभासी बोध के लिए उठाए जाते हैं!
“अच्छा…और मेरा प्रकृति से कैसा संबंध है?”
मैं रास्ते के किनारे झीसी में भीगती एक चट्टान पर बैठकर घाटी में नदी की आवाज के साथ बहता रहा, ठंड लगने लगी तो एक घर से उठते धुएं के साथ बांज और रागू के पेड़ों से ऊपर उठा और अंधेरे में अनुमान से मैकतोली के धुंधले शिखर तक गया, आसमान के तारों में पानी भरा था जिससे वे फूल गए थे. उनके पीछे का अंधेरा देखते हुए विस्मित हुआ…तो यह निरंतर फैलता हुआ ब्रह्मांड है, इसके बीच कहीं झूलती क्रिकेट की गेंद जितनी पृथ्वी है, उसके भी दो तिहाई हिस्से में पानी है, बाकी बची जगह में इमारतों और सामानों के बीच चलते-फिरते अरबों लोग हैं, जिसमें से एक बिंदु से भी छोटा मैं हूं जो इस वक्त यहां बैठा अपनी नियति के बारे में सोचता हुआ पैर हिला रहा हूं.
मैने कमरे पर पहुंच कर प्रकृति पर आभासी मालिकाने वाला सवाल डायरी में लिखकर रख लिया जिसे अगली शाम की बैठकी में पूछा जाना था लेकिन शुभ्रो अगली सुबह ही निकल गया. उसने जाते वक्त विदा कहने के लिए मेरा दरवाजा खटखटाया था लेकिन मैं गहरी नींद में था, सुन नहीं पाया. वह अपना पता और नंबर टिनशेड में छोड़ गया कि कभी फिर मुलाकात होगी.
एक सुबह जैकुनी के तीन कुत्तों गब्बर, गब्बू और रोमी ने काफी गदर मचाया, वे उन्हें खाना खिलाने वाले विक्रम के भी काबू में नहीं आ रहे थे. थोड़ी देर बाद, रास्ते पर एक बंगाली परिवार दिखा जो अपने बड़े से कुत्ते के साथ पिंडारी ग्लैशियर जा रहा था, पति-पत्नी-बेटा और विशाल धवल कुत्ता जिसकी पीठ पर नीले रंग का छोटा सा कंबल एक स्ट्रैप से बंधा हुआ था. सुदूर स्मृति में ऐसा दृश्य अब तक सिर्फ एक ही बार झिलमिलाया था इसलिए सहज ही स्वर्ग की ओर जाते पांडवों की याद आई. विक्रम ने कहा, यह पहला किस्मत वाला कुत्ता है जो उसके देखे में पिंडारी जा रहा है. बच्चों ने उसके नाम और नस्ल के बारे में पूछताछ की तो पता चला वह एक किस्म का संत है जिसका नाम बर्नाड है. रास्ते के हर थोक में पहले आकर बेटा पूछता था, यहां कुत्ते तो नहीं हैं! पहाड़ में कुत्तों की कहां कमी इसलिए उनकाविरोधप्रदर्शन आखिरी गांव खाती तक चलता रहा. घाटी में यह पूरे सीजन की सबसे बड़ी ब्रेकिंग न्यूज थी, अब तो शहरों के कुत्ते बिल्लियां भी यहां सैर करने के लिए आने वाले हुए.
अगले दिन रास्ते पर दो स्थानीय लड़के दिखे जो एक गठरी में बंधे सेन्ट बर्नाड को बारी बारी से ढोकर ला रहे थे, बंगाली परिवार कहीं पीछे था, उसे बागेश्वर के कुत्ता हस्पताल ले जाना था. खरकिया से द्वाली के अठारह किलोमीटर के सफर में कुत्ते के पंजों में छाले पड़ गए और खून निकलने लगा. वह परिवार पिंडारी ग्लैशियर के एन मुहाने तक आकर वापस लौट रहा था. आश्चर्य कि इस बार गांवों के कुत्ते बिल्कुल चुप थे.
एक शाम दो बंगाली मेरे बगल के कमरे में आए. एक देखने में लेखक अर्नेस्ट हेमिंग्वे जैसा है या कहना चाहिए वह खुद को इसी रूप में प्रस्तुत करना चाहता है. सफेद घनी दाढ़ी, हैट, हाफ जैकेट, पैरों भारी बूट लेकिन कंधे झुक गए हैं, आंखों से अवसाद और कमजोरी जाहिर हो रही है. उसने पहली बात कही, “उत्तराखंड में शायद ही कोई जगह बची हो जहां मैं पिछले चालीस साल में कम से कम दस बार न गया होऊंगा, जनवरी से दिसंबर के बीच कोई ऐसा महीना नहीं जिसमें मैं यहां न आया होऊं.”
अब तक चामू मेरा हिमालय के निर्जन और बर्फीले हिस्सों का इनसाइक्लोपीडिया हुआ करता था लेकिन अब सामने एक नया आदमी है जिसकी जानकारी ज्यादा व्यवस्थित, वैज्ञानिक और रोमांटिक है. चामू बोलता है तो लगता है संकेतों में पत्थर, बर्फ, बारिश, बिजली और देवताओं के बीच संवाद चल रहा है लेकिन उसके वर्णन में कुछ कविता जैसा है जो एक सुंदर, अल्हड़, क्रूर और मायावी लड़की को संबोधित है. दूसरे वाले का नाम गौतम है जो एक तरह से मेरा परिचित है. मैने कुछ दिन तक लखनऊ नवभारत टाइम्स में नौकरी की है और वह वहां काफी पहले प्रोडक्शन डिपार्टमेंट में काम कर चुका है, बीच में कई कारपोरेट किस्म के लोग हैं जिन्हें हम दोनों जानते हैं, उनमें से हर एक मनुष्य होने का बहाना है, वे मनुष्य के शरीर के भीतर फड़फड़ाती कोई और चीज हैं क्योंकि उनके बारे में जितनी बात होती है हमारे बीच अजनबियत बढ़ती जाती है.
मेरी जीभ में खुजली हो रही है कि अमेरिका के फ्लोरिडा द्वीप पर, हर साल होने वाली ‘पापा हेमिंग्वे लुक अलाइक कंटेस्ट’ (हेमिंग्वे जैसा दिखने की प्रतियोगिता) की बात की जाए. अब वहां मुकाबला खासा कठिन होने लगा है, मिलती जुलती शक्लों वाले कौतुकी सात-आठ सालों तक लगातार तीन चरणों वाली इस प्रतियोगिता में भाग लेते रहते हैं और हर साल वे इस शराबी, अक्खड़, औरतबाज और दुस्साहसी लेखक से अपनी दृश्यसाम्यता को बढ़ाते जाते हैं, तब उनमें से कोई एक जीत पाता है. प्रतियोगिता फ्लोरिडा के कीवेस्ट में एक शराबखाने ‘स्लोपी जोस’ में आयोजित की जाती है जो 1930 के आसपास लेखक की बैठकी का नियमित अड्डा था, यहीं रहते हुए उसने दो नामवर उपन्यास ‘फॉर हूम द बेल टॉल्स’ और ‘टू हैव ऑर हैव नॉट’ लिखे थे. हेमिंग्वे के व्यक्तित्व का पता उस उक्ति से चलता है जो उसने लिखने के बारे में कही है,”लिखते समय कुछ नया नहीं होता, होता यह है कि आप टाइपराइटर के आगे बैठकर खुद को काटते हैं और खून बहाते हैं.”
मैं सोचता हूं अगर कोई जैविक रूप से मर्द है, फिर भी और अधिक मर्दाना दिखना चाहता है तो इसका मतलब है कि उसने अपने अहं को कुछ ज्यादा ही खाद-पानी देकर पाला होगा, उसे अच्छी तरह पता होगा कि विश्व युद्ध के दिनों में हेमिंग्वे की तरह मोर्चे पर जाकर जीना और कोलकाता के महानगरीय जीवन में हेमिंग्वे का डुप्लीकेट कहलाना दो बिल्कुल विरोधाभासी चीजें हैं. इन दोनों बीच की जो खाली जगह है शायद वहीं यह आदमी वेध्य हालत में रहता होगा. अगर उससे हेमिंग्वे जैसा दिखने की प्रतियोगिता की बात की जाए तो इस तरफ उसका ध्यान बहुत बाद में जाएगा कि उसके प्रयासों को सराहा जा रहा है, ज्यादा संभावना है कि वह सबसे पहले यही सोचे कि डुप्लीकेटों का डुप्लीकेट बनने में निहित दयनीयता की तरफ ध्यान दिलाया जा रहा है. मैं इस ज्वलनशील मसले पर बात करना फिलहाल स्थगित कर देता हूं और उन्हें चामू के बाप के कोटे से बचाकर रखी गई रम पीने के लिए आमंत्रित करता हूं, वे दोनों एक दूसरे को देखकर मुस्कराते हैं और सख्ती से मना कर देते हैं, “नहीं, हम लोग अभी नहीं खाएगा.”
अगली सुबह बारिश शुरू हो जाती है, वे दोनों चामू के भाई जोहार को साथ लेकर सुंदरढूंगा के लिए निकल जाते हैं. नाश्ते के समय मैने उन्हें बिना चीनी की चाय पीते और कई तरह की दवाईयां खाते देखा था, अब नीचे पिंडर पर बना लकड़ी का जुगाड़ पुल पार करते देख रहा हूं, उनके ढलते, कमजोर शरीरों के बारे में सोचते हुए अफसोस होता है. अगले क्षण हिमालय के प्रति उनके रूमान और हिम्मत का ख्याल आता है, जादू होता है, वे बारिश की धुंध में अपने वास्तविक आकारों से कुछ बड़े और मजबूत दिखने लगते हैं. इधर शेड में आग के सामने छत्तीसगढ़ के एक नौजवान अफसर का किस्सा शुरू हो चुका है जो तीन साल पहले सुंदरढूंगा के रास्ते में रपट कर नदी में बह गया, उसके घऱ वाले हेलीकाप्टर तक लेकर आए लेकिन लाश का पता नहीं चल पाया. वह खरकिया से सीधा जातोली पहुंचा और वहां से सिर्फ पांच पैकेट मैगी लेकर आगे जाने लगा. लड़कों ने किसी लोकल गाइड को साथ लेने के लिए कहा तो वह हंसा था, मैने पर्वतारोहण के बेसिक और एडवांस दोनों कोर्स कर रखे हैं, देखना कल तक इसी रास्ते वापस लौट आऊंगा.
रूप सिंह मृत्यु के जनसंपर्क अधिकारी की तरह कहता है, “कोर्स क्या होता है सर! एक बार गिर गया तो गिर गया, उस खड़ी ढलान पर हाथ छूटने के बाद कौन टिक पाता है.”
बारिश लगातार जारी है. तीसरे दिन शाम को दोनों भीगे हुए वापस लौट आए और शेड में बैठकर चाय पीने लगे. थोड़ी देर बाद जोहार आया और लॉज के सामने की खाली जगह में उनका टेन्ट लगाने लगा. अल्पाइन कंपनी का एकदम नया, हरे रंग का टेन्ट है जिसकी खिड़की मैकतोली शिखर की ओर खुलती है जो अभी काले बादलों से ढंका हुआ है. वे भीगे कपड़े बदलने के लिए अपने कमरे का ताला भी नहीं खोलते, इंतजार करते हैं. अंधेरा होते न होते टेन्ट में समा जाते हैं और अपने साथ लाई बोतल खोलकर पीने लगते हैं, मोबाइल पर कोई बांग्ला गान बज रहा है. थोड़ी देर में उनका खाना भी वहीं पहुंचा दिया जाता है, मुझे हैरानी होती है, क्या वे बच्चों की तरह घर-घर खेल रहे हैं!
मेरे कमरे के सामने एक पत्थर के नीचे मद्धिम रोशनी जल रही है. जुगनू की तरह सांस के साथ जलता-बुझता कीड़ा नहीं, लगातार रोशनी देता हुआ कोई कीड़ा है, मैं जाकर हेमिंग्वे को कीड़े के बारे में बताता हूं. वह मेरे साथ आकर देखता है और कहता है, “बया चिड़िया अपने घोंसले में पहले कीचड़ या गोबर रखती हैं फिर इस कीड़े को उठाकर खोंस देती है, इस तरह अपने घर में बल्ब का इंतजाम करती है.”
मैं देर तक चकित होता हूं, वह खुश हो जाता है, मैं टेन्ट की तरफ प्रश्नवाचक मुद्रा में हाथ घुमाता हूं,”ये सब क्या है?”
वह मायूस होकर कहता है, ब्रदर, चार साल से इसे खोलने का मौका नहीं मिला, इस ट्रिप में भी नहीं हो पाया. ऊपर बहुत बारिश हो रही है, हम लोग दो रात कठेलिया में केएमवीएन के गेस्टहाउस में पड़े इंतजार करते रहे…किसी भी सूरत आगे नहीं जा पाए.
“ओह, ये तो दिल तोड़ देने वाली बात है.”
मैं रात में एक बार बाहर निकला, मैदान में खर्राटे गूंज रहे थे, टेन्ट की झिरी से झांक कर देखा दोनों स्लीपिंग बैगों में बाहर सिर निकाले सो रहे हैं, उनके चेहरों पर कोई ऐसा भाव है जो रोजमर्रा की नींद में आ ही नहीं सकता लेकिन वह है क्या, मैं व्यक्त कर पाने में विफल हूं. उनके स्वास्थ्य को देखते हुए नहीं लगता कि वे अब फिर कभी यहां आ पाएंगे.
वे शायद आखिरी बार हिमालय के किसी गांव में एक टेन्ट के अंदर सो रहे हैं.
