लेखकों के पत्रों से कई बार उनके व्यक्तित्व का, उनके लेखन-सूत्रों का पता चलता है. यह एक ऐतिहासिक पत्र है जो आमुख-8 में प्रकाशित हुआ था. राजकमल चौधरी ने संभवतः अपने मरने से कुछ दिनों पहले दूधनाथ सिंह को लिखा था. कल से इस पत्र को लेकर इलाहबाद विश्वविद्यालय के प्रोफ़ेसर सूर्यनारायण की लानत-मलानत की जा रही है. लेकिन यह पत्र राजकमल चौधरी की रचनावली तक में मौजूद रहा है. पत्र को पढ़ें और सच झूठ का फैसला करें- मॉडरेटर

प्रिय दूधनाथ,
तुम्हारा एक पत्र पढ़ा। पढ़कर विस्मय हुआ। इस तरह का कोई पत्र मुझे लिखा भी था? सोचता हूं कि इस तरह का पत्र तुम लिख नहीं सकते थे। कलकत्ते की बात जाने दो। इलाहाबाद में, भारती भंडार तक में तुम मुझे कायर ही लगे। तुम्हारी मुस्कुराहट, तुम्हारा तेवर, तुम्हारा पढ़ना और लिखना, लड़कियों के बारे में बातें करना, सब मुझे भदेस टेकनीक से ज्यादा नहीं लगे। इलाहाबाद से लेकर कलकत्ते तक तुम मेरे लिए एक खिंची हुई रिरियाहट थे।
तुम नहीं जानते, कि मरने के बाद तुम्हारे जैसे लोग किसी को प्रेत बना देते हैं। अब तुम बताओ कि तुम भी इसी तरह जिंदा हो? तुम खुद अपने दांतों से काटकर घाव बनाकर, दिखानेवाले रहे हो। भीख देनेवाले पर हंसते हुए होटलों में गोश्त खाते रहे हो। फीस के लिए पैसे मांगकर अपनी चटोरी जीभ को शांत करते रहे हो। शराब पीते रहे हो। यह तुमने दूसरों की बीवियों, दूसरों की जवान लड़कियों तक के साथ किया है। आज भी करते हो। दरअसल तुम केवल स्वार्थी रहे। आत्महंता। तुम्हें कभी पता तक नहीं चला कि कैसे कोई तुम्हारे प्रति दयावान भर हो पाता है। सच्चा ईमानदार स्नेह क्यों नहीं दे पाता है। तुम दूसरों की दया बटोरते रहे हो। अपनी दोनों बीवियों से, अश्क से, मुझसे, भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ से, पंत जी से, वार्ष्णेय से, मित्रों, बुजुर्गों सबके सामने तुम एक ‘रोते हुए चेहरे वाला आदमी’ होते रहे हो और रक्तपात रचते रहे हो। ‘अपनी शताब्दी के नाम’ तुम अपनी अश्लीलताएं देते रहे हो। ‘अपनी सुरंग से लौटते हुए’ दूसरों की गोद में सिर रखकर रोते रहे हो। तुम्हारे पास चेहरा नहीं है। चेहरा होता तो तुम ‘तारापथ’ की भूमिका न लिखते। लिखते भी तो इतनी गलत और तर्कदोष-संयुक्त न लिखते। लेकिन तुम यहीं नहीं रूके। पंतजी के सामने रोकर अपना हस्ताक्षर बेच आए। वैसे चेहरे के बिना हस्ताक्षर, हस्ताक्षर नहीं होता, गधे की सींग होता है। यानी तुम सड़ गए और सड़े हुए शव को लेटरबाक्स समझकर उसमें अपनी अप्लीकेशन डाल आए। संत्रास को आयाम देने के लिए, अपनी भोजपुरी आधुनिकता को हिंदी विभाग के विद्यार्थियों के सामने दोने की तरह रखकर बार-बार हंसने के लिए! वार्ष्णेय जैसे बनिया के चरणों पर चींटे की तरह लोटने के लिए।
यह नहीं कि लोग तुम्हें जानते नहीं। तुम पर तरस खाकर अपने शतरंज में तुम्हें शह के लिए गोटी बना देते हैं। मैं सिर्फ तरस खाता रहा हूं। बुराइयों से मैं जीते जी नहीं डरा।
मैं एक अंत पर हूं पर वह अंत तुम्हारे आदि में है। उसका क्या करोगे? तुम्हारे पत्र से ध्वनित होता है कि तुमने मेरे मरने के बाद, मेरी सारी स्थिति से परिचय प्राप्त करके इसलिए लिखा और छपवाया कि तुम्हारे प्रति लोगों की दया का विस्तार हो जाए, लोग समझें कि यह निरीह, कायर, ढोंगी, पैरासाइट और औरतों को फांसकर उनके पैसे से गुलछर्रे उड़ाने वाला जीव नहीं है। जबकि तुम थे। सब जानते हैं।
क्या तुमने परसाई का व्यंग्य पढ़ा है? एक आलसी ने सपने में इतिहास से केवल कुछ नाम भर पेंसिल के काट दिए और दूसरे दिन उसका नाम स्वर्णाक्षरों में लिखा था। इतना आलस तुममे हैं? शार्टकट प्रतिभा नहीं देता। उसे नष्ट करता है। वह प्रतिभा नष्ट तो पहले से है। जो व्यक्ति उन्हीं की पीठ में छुरा भोंक दे जिनसे उसे दया या थोड़ा-बहुत स्नेह मिलता रहा है, जो अपनी बीवी को गांव में अपने भाग्य पर रोने के लिए छोड़ दे, अपनी उस बीवी से पैदा हुई बच्ची को अनाथ छोड़ दे, दूसरी बीवी के साहित्यिक वैदुशिक व्यक्तित्व को नश्ट कर डाले, उसके चरित्र को खुद से नीचे ले जाने के लिए साजिशें करे, और उसकी कमाई खाए, अपने को बचाते हुए भूमिका लिखकर पंत से नौकरी मांगकर उन्हें भी पतन की राह पर ले जाए, वार्ष्णेय के व्यक्तित्व को और गर्हित बनाने के लिए उसकी खुशामद करता जाए (एक दिन तुम वाश्र्णेय को और पंत को भी गच्चा दोगे जरूर। अश्क जैसे खिलाड़ी को दिया ही)। वह दरअसल रूग्ण अपराधी है, अपराधी होना उसकी आदत होती है। क्षीरस्वामी, क्षीरेन दत्त, यहां से वहां तक तुम वही हो। तुम मुझे मनुष्यता और सचाई का दुश्मन मानते हो। मेरे जीवन को काट पीटकर, तोड़ मरोड़कर लोगों के सामने रखते हो। और तुम मानवता के दावेदार, सिंहद्वार बन रहे हो!
तुम्हारा पत्र सचमुच अच्छा है। फ्रायड के पास तुम जाते तो वह तुम्हें ठीक कर देता। तुम रोगमुक्त हो जाते। बीमार, काइयां हंसी तुम्हारे चेहरे से उड़ जाती है। सेक्सी कहानियां, गलदश्रु कविताएं, खोखले लेख न लिखते। लड़कियां, भाषा, पैसा-तुम्हारे लिए चाट रहते। अच्छा किया जो यह पत्र लिखा। तुमने मुझे व्यक्त करने में अनजाने ही अपने को व्यक्त किया है।
मुझे तुमने प्रिय ढंग से संबोधित किया है। इसलिए यह पूछ सकता हूं कि तुमने मेरा पत्र अगर मैंने लिखा है, छपाया क्यों नहीं? दोनों पत्र एक साथ छपते तो पाठक को ज्यादा सुविधा रहती। मेरे मरने के बाद तो कम-से-कम तुम्हारा डर खत्म हो जाना चाहिए। कहां है वह पत्र? उसे तुम छपाते क्यों नहीं? नहीं छपाते तो दुनिया तुम्हें धोखेबाज मानेगी। जैसे तुम कलकत्ते के काॅलेज से अपनी पहली बीवी और दूसरी बीवी के तथा अनेक तथाकथित प्रेमिकाओं के चक्कर में ब्लैकलिस्टेड होकर निकाले गए थे। यह मत समझो कि तुम्हारे-हमारे पाठक कोई होटल हैं। खा-पीकर और बिना बिल चुकाए चम्पत हो जाओ। चुकाना तो पड़ेगा ही। यह मत समझो कि हिंदी साहित्य के इतिहास में वार्ष्णेय से अपना नाम डलवा दोगे, तो चुकाने से बच जाओगे।
फिलहाल, मेरे मर जाने के बाद तुमने अपनी घृणा, (जो सिर्फ एक टेकनीक है) उगली। आदर नहीं दिया। अच्छा किया। मेरे जीते-जी करते तो इस घृणा से संतोष होता। तुम लोगों से कहते फिरे कि तुमने यह पत्र धर्मयुग में भेजा था। भारती ने छापा नहीं। ‘अन्तप्र्रसंग’ में इसका उल्लेख क्यों नहीं किया? तुम्हारा वास्तविक कतराना और बचना यही है। लेकिन कब तक? कोई तुम्हें दया दे, तुम पीठ पीछे गाली दो। और तुम खुद एकांत में अपमानित अनुभव करो तो कोई क्या करे! ‘खैर, मानवीयता से तुम्हें कुछ लेना-देना नहीं।’ नहीं तो तुम विरोध की टेकनीक मेरी मृत्यु के बाद न अपनाते। दोस्त, तुम कितने कमजोर हो, कलकत्ते में तुम डबल डेकर के जरा से रूकते ही उल्टियां करते रहे हो। खून की कै करते समय तो तुम सिर्फ एक निरीह, बेचारे हो गए थे। यही तुम्हारा सच है। तुम्हें सहानुभूति की भीख चाहिए? बस, हर समय एक सेनीटोरियम का गतिवान वातावरण! तुम्हारी चुप्पी और गुर्राहट, दोनों यहीं तक है। इससे आगे नहीं है। ‘मैं तुम्हें इतना नंगा कर सकता हूं कि तुम्हारी बदबू’ से तुम्हारी विपन्नताएं बढ़ जाएंगी। तुम्हारा परिवार नष्ट हो जाएगा। तुम जो उन्नति के गर्त में अनवरत गिरते जाने की कोशिश करते जा रहे हो, सिर्फ तुम गर्त भर बचोगे। लेकिन मैं प्रेत होकर भी ‘नैतिक जिम्मेदारी’ से बच नहीं सकता। बिना तुम्हारी बीवी का चेहरा (या बीवियों का चेहरा!) याद आए! तुम्हारे पास जलती सलाख है या सिर्फ लेडी कार्नर से खरीदी गई काजल लगाने वाली शीशे की पतली सी सलाई! जरा काजल लगाकर सो जाओ, और अपनी बीवी को अपना चेहरा दिखाने के लिए जगाए रखो। ध्यान रहे, नाक न बहने पाए। आंसू से गाल काले न पड़ने पाएं।
तुम्हें खून लग चुका है। और तुम ‘शाश्वत मौत’ के भीतर सड़ने लगे हो। बदला और तुम!-वह तुम्हारे बस का नहीं। तुम कांप सकते हो। थरथरा सकते हो। मेरी आग को बुझा नहीं सकते। तुम किसी के भी शब्द, किसी के भी जीवन को सह नहीं सकते, जलते हो। यह जलन तुम्हें एक रोता हुआ बच्चा बना देती है। तुम्हारी महत्त्वाकांक्षाएं सिर्फ बच्चे की जिज्ञासाएं हैं। उपपत्ति और परिणाम-किसी का भी-तुम्हारे लिए बदला है। मैं क्या करूं।
तुम मेरे हंसने से चिढ़ते रहे हो? मैं अगर सभ्य दिखा तो इस दिखने के लिए देखनेवाला जिम्मेदार नहीं है। तुम मुझे देखनेवाले थे और तुम खुद अपने को नंगा कर गए। तुम अपने ही शब्दों में खुद से कह रहे हो। तुम्हारी स्वीकृति हैः ‘लेकिन अपमान… वह धीरे-धीरे पकड़ में आता है।’ जब तुम आदमी के अंदर की सचाइयों का मजाक उड़ाने लगते हो। तुम दरअसल उस सचाई रहितता से पीड़ित हो। मैं नहीं जानता, तुम इस तरह से सचाई-रहित कितने अर्से से हो। लेकिन तुम उसे छिपाने के लिए शैतान का बाना बनाए फिरते हो। जबकि तुम शैतान नहीं हो सकते। उतनी बड़ी चुनौती झेलने की शक्ति तुम्हारे जीवन, स्वभाव में नहीं है। कायर आदमी ‘शैतान’ नहीं हो सकता।
यह तुम्हारी क्षणिक स्वीकृति है। फिर तुम उसी आंचे-पांचे में फंस गए हो। आज भी तुम अपने साथी कवियों की पंक्तियां चुराते हो। सिद्धांत और सत्य चुराते हो। पैसे उधार लेकर देने वाले को चूतिया समझते हो। अभी तक तुमने क्रिसियन काॅलेज के पास वाले होटल का ढाई सौ, तीन सौ रूपये तक का अदा नहीं किया है। न करोगे। विश्वास करो, तुम्हें मेरी तरह वास्तविक प्रशंसक और तुम्हारे ही शब्दों में ‘पिछलगुए’ नहीं मिलेंगे। एक भी नहीं, आधा, तिहाई और रत्ती भर भी नहीं।
तुममें-हममें कभी कोई साम्य नहीं रहा। तुम विभाजित हो। मोहभंग! यह मुझसे पहले प्रयोग के पुरस्कर्ताओं को हो चुका था। क्या तुम अभी तक इतने पीछे हो? मैं अराजक स्थितियों की उपज था-तुम्हें अनपढ़ मिले, मैं ‘अनपढ़’ दिखा। ‘अनपढ़’ को ही ‘अनपढ़’ मिलते हैं। कल तुम कबीर को क्या कहोगे, जब क्लास ले रहे होगे।
