हिंदी में अनुवाद के पाठक बढ़ रहे हैं और चुपचाप उसका बाजार भी तेजी से बढ़ता जा रहा है. इसी विषय पर मेरा यह लेख ‘कादम्बिनी’ के दिसंबर अंक में प्रकाशित हुआ है. जिन्होंने न पढ़ा हो उनके लिए- प्रभात रंजन

कुछ महीने पहले यात्रा बुक्स की निदेशिका नीता गुप्ता ने यह कहकर चौंका दिया था कि उनके यहाँ से प्रकाशित अमीश त्रिपाठी के किताबों के हिंदी अनुवादों की पांच लाख से अधिक प्रतियाँ बिक चुकी हैं. यात्रा बुक्स हिंदी में अनुवाद-केन्द्रित प्रकाशन है और उसकी निदेशिका का कथन यह बताता है कि हिंदी में अनुवादों के माध्यम से कितने पाठक बढ़ रहे हैं. यह बात पिछले कई सालों से कही जा रही है कि हिंदी किताबों का बाजार बढ़ रहा है. हिंदी में नए-नए लेखक आ गए हैं जिनकी किताबें बड़ी तादाद में बिकने लगी है, उन लेखकों को मीडिया द्वारा पोस्टर बॉय की तरह प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है. लेकिन दुर्भाग्य से इस बात का स्वतंत्र विश्लेषण नहीं किया गया है कि हिंदी में अनुवाद की पुस्तकों का बाजार कितना बढ़ा है. वास्तव में, इस समय हिंदी में जो नए पाठक आ रहे हैं वे हिंदी के पारंपरिक पाठकों से भिन्न हैं. पहले हिंदी के अधिकतर पाठक हिंदी माध्यम के स्कूलों से पढ़कर आते थे. लेकिन अब छोटे-छोटे कस्बों में भी हिंदी माध्यम की शिक्षा कम होती जा रही है. पब्लिक स्कूलों का जोर बढ़ता जा रहा है. इसलिए इस समय जो हिंदी के नए पाठक हैं वे रूचि से हिंदी पढने की दिशा में अग्रसर होते हैं. वे आमतौर हिंदी में अंग्रेजी जैसा साहित्य पढना चाहते हैं. अकारण नहीं है कि हिंदी में ‘नईवाली हिंदी’ का प्रचलन बढ़ता जा रहा है और अनूदित पुस्तकों की तरफ रुझान भी.
इस सन्दर्भ में, जो बात रेखांकित की जाने वाली है वह यह कि हिंदी में अंग्रेजी सहित अन्य विदेशी भाषाओं से जिन पुस्तकों के अनुवाद होते हैं उन विषयों पर आमतौर पर हिंदी में पुस्तकों का अभाव है. अमीश त्रिपाठी की किताबों की हिंदी में लोकप्रियता का एक बड़ा कारण यह है कि उन्होंने मिथकीय फिक्शन लिखने शुरू की जिनका हिंदी में कुछ अपवादों को छोड़कर सिरे से अभाव रहा है. हिंदी में मिथकों पर लिखना एक तरह से पिछड़ापन माना जाता रहा है, उसको दक्षिणपंथ से जोड़कर देखा जाता रहा है, जबकि अंग्रेजी में इस समय सबसे बड़ा ट्रेंड यही है. एक मीडिया हाउस द्वारा हर तिमाही बेस्टसेलर किताबों की सूची जारी की जाती है जो विशुद्ध रूप से बिक्री के आंकड़ों के ऊपर आधारित होती है. इस में अनुवाद की सूची में मिथक कथाओं पर आधारित पुस्तकों की उल्लेखनीय संख्या होती है.
इस सन्दर्भ में देवदत पटनायक का उल्लेख आवश्यक लगता है. वे आधुनिक सन्दर्भों में मिथक कथाओं के पाठ लिखते हैं और हिंदी में उनकी किताबों के अनुवाद भी खूब पढ़े जाते हैं. मिथकों पर लिखते हुए वे धार्मिक दृष्टि की जगह पर भारत की बहुलतावादी दृष्टि को सामने लाते हैं. एक ऐसी आध्यात्मिकता जो धार्मिकता से मुक्त है. उनके लेखन के मुरीद हिंदी में भी बढ़ते जा रह हैं. इस साल अलग-अलग प्रकाशनों से उनकी कई किताबों के अनुवाद हिंदी में आये- मेरी हनुमान चालीसा, जो हनुमान चालीसा की आधुनिक टीका है. इसी तरह देवलोक का तीसरा खंड प्रकाशित हुआ. लेकिन सबसे महत्वपूर्ण किताब ‘ओलिम्पस’ आई जिसमें उन्होंने ग्रीक मिथकों का भारतीय सन्दर्भों में पाठ प्रस्तुत किया है. ग्रीस के अनेक देवी-देवताओं की तुलना उन्होंने भारतीय देवी-देवताओं से की है. यह अपने ढंग की अनूठी किताब है.
हिंदी में समाज विज्ञान, सामाजिक विषयों, राजनीति पर गंभीर पुस्तकें कम लिखी जाती हैं. इस कमी को भी अनुवादों के जरिये पूरा किया जाता है. ज्यां द्रेज़ और अमर्त्य सेन की किताब ‘भारत और उसके विरोधाभास’ इस सन्दर्भ में एक महत्वपूर्ण अनूदित पुस्तक है जिसमें भारत के आर्थिक-सामाजिक विकास की गाथा प्रस्तुत की गई है. जाहिर है, दोनों विद्वानों के नाम किसी परिचय के मोहताज नहीं हैं और यह एक शोधपूर्ण पुस्तक है. इसी तरह शशि थरूर ने हाल में अंग्रेजी में आधुनिक भारत के सामाजिक-राजनीतिक अंतर्विरोधों को कई किताबें लिखी हैं. उनकी अपनी एक विशिष्ट शैली है, भाषा है और विषय को बरतने का अपना विशिष्ट अंदाज है. हिंदी में इस साल उनकी दो किताबों के अनुवाद प्रकाशित हुए और चर्चित भी हुए. एक किताब ‘मैं हिन्दू क्यों हूँ’ प्रकाशित हुआ और दूसरी किताब ‘अन्धकार काल: भारत में ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य’ है जो एक नए तरह के राष्ट्रवाद की हिमायत करने वाली किताब है. दोनों किताबें खूब चर्चा में रही. यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा कि उनके लेखन का हिंदी में भी कम आकर्षण नहीं है.
अंग्रेजी किताबों की दुनिया में एक नया ट्रेंड शुरू हुआ है आध्यात्मिक गुरुओं की किताबों के प्रकाशन का. साथ ही, बड़े आध्यात्मिक गुरुओं के जीवन-शिक्षण को लेकर भी किताबें प्रकाशित हो रही हैं, जिनमे हिंदी अनुवाद भी प्रकाशित हो रहे हैं. इस क्रम में सबसे उल्लेखनीय पुस्तक पवन के. वर्मा की ‘आदि शंकराचार्य: हिन्दू धर्म के महान विचारक है, जो उनकी अंग्रेजी में लिखी किताब का अनुवाद है. इस किताब के प्रकाशन से यह बात स्पष्ट हुई कि हिन्दू धर्म की पुनर्स्थापना करने वाले इतने बड़े संत-विचारक के ऊपर हिंदी में कोई उल्लेखनीय पुस्तक नहीं लिखी गई थी. यह किताब इसी कमी को पूरा करने वाली है. आर्ट ऑफ़ लिविंग के लिए दुनिया भर में विख्यात गुरु श्री श्री रविशंकर की जीवनी का अनुवाद भी इसी वर्ष हिंदी में प्रकाशित हुआ ‘गुरुदेव शिखर के शीर्ष पर’, यह जीवनी उनकी बहन भानुमती नरसिम्हन ने लिखी है, जो उनके जीवन को बहुत करीब से देखने का मौका देती है. श्री श्री का एक बड़ा भक्त-समुदाय है और उनके बारे में आम लोगों में भी जानने की उत्सुकता रहती है. यह किताब दोनों तरह के पाठकों को संतुष्ट करने वाली है.
इसी तरह, विज्ञान-तकनीक, अर्थशास्त्र की पुस्तकों के बारे में यह माना जाता है कि हिंदी में उसके पाठक नहीं हैं. इसलिए हिंदी में अकादमिक जगत को छोड़कर उसके बाहर इन विषयों पर शायद ही कुछ लिखा-छापा जाता हो. लेकिन पिछले साल अंग्रेजी में जो दो किताबें भारत में लगातार बेस्टसेलर सूची में बनी रही वे तकनीक और अर्थशास्त्र जैसे गूढ़ विषयों को लेकर थीं. एक, माइक्रोसोफ्ट के भारतीय सीईओ सत्य नडेला की किताब ‘हिट रिफ्रेश’ और दूसरी आरबीआई के पूर्व गवर्नर रघुराम राजन की किताब ‘आई डू व्हाट आई डू’ इस साल दोनों किताबें हिंदी में अपने मूल नाम से प्रकाशित हुई हैं. सत्य नडेला की किताब ‘हिट रिफ्रेश’ तकनीकी के माध्यम से भविष्य में होने वाले परिवर्तनों को बताती है, जो कई बार आश्वस्त भी करती है तो कई बार डराती भी है. आजकल यह बहस छिड़ी हुई है कि आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस के प्रचलन के बाद दुनिया में बड़े पैमाने पर बेरोजगारी बढ़ जायेगी. इस किताब में इस विषय को विस्तार से समझाया गया है. इसी तरह रघुराम राजन की पुस्तक में भारतीय बैंकिंग व्यवस्था के बारे में विस्तार से लिखा गया है.
सिनेमा एक ऐसा विषय है जिसके पाठक हिंदी में बहुत अधिक हैं लेकिन हिंदी में आमतौर पर इससे जुड़े विषयों पर मौलिक किताबें नहीं लिखी जाती हैं. फ़िल्मी सितारों की आत्मकथाएं हों या उनकी जीवनियाँ वे मूल रूप से अंग्रेजी में ही लिखी जाती हैं, उनके अनुवाद हिंदी में प्रकाशित होते हैं. इस साल दिलीप कुमार की आत्मकथा ‘वजूद और परछाईं’ का हिंदी अनुवाद प्रकाशित हुआ. ऋषि कपूर की आत्मकथा ‘खुल्लमखुल्ला’ का हिंदी अनुवाद प्रकाशित हुआ. साथ ही, संजय दत्त की जीवनी ‘बॉलीवुड का बिगड़ा शहजादा’ भी हिंदी में प्रकाशित हुई.
यहाँ महज कुछ प्रवृत्तियों की तरफ इशारा किया गया है. इस बात का आकलन दिलचस्प होगा कि हिंदी में जिस तेजी से अनूदित पुस्तकों के प्रकाशन में वृद्धि हो रही है उस तेजी से मौलिक पुस्तकों के प्रकाशन में वृद्धि नहीं हो रही है.
