मनोहर श्याम जोशी की किताब ‘बातें-मुलाकातें: आत्मपरक-साहित्यपरक’ मेरे पास मार्च से है लेकिन इसके ऊपर लिख आज रहा हूँ. यही होता है जो लेखक हमारे सामने होता है हम उसी के ऊपर लिखते रहते हैं, शाबासी के लिए, मिल जाए तो रेवड़ियों के लिए. आज लिखते हुए मैं यही सोचता रहा कि जिनको मैं गुरु कहता रहा उनकी एक अच्छी किताब आई तो मैंने हुलसकर उसके बारे में क्यों नहीं लिखा. आज भी इसलिए लिख रहा हूँ क्योंकि साल भर इसके ऊपर किसी ने नहीं लिखा. मेरे लिए यह इस साल की सबसे अच्छी किताब है.
मनोहर श्याम जोशी दरअसल ऐसे लेखक थे जिन्होंने अपने जीवन-अपने लेखन को लेकर बहुत कम लिखा. वे आत्ममुग्धता के नहीं आत्मसंशय के लेखक थे. उनके आरंभिक उपन्यास इसलिए छप गए क्योंकि प्रकाशक ने उनको आखिरी प्रूफ नहीं दिखाया और उपन्यास छाप दिए. जी, ‘कुरु कुरु स्वाहा’ और ‘कसप’ के साथ यही हुआ. जो किताबें उनके पास लिखने के बाद अधिक दिन तक रह जाती थी उसको वे बार बार लिखते रहते थे.
बहरहाल, इस किताब में उनके कुछ ऐसे इंटरव्यू हैं जो समय समय पर शोधार्थियों ने लिए थे, जो अभी तक अप्रकाशित थे, जिनको न तो उन शोधार्थियों ने कहीं छपवाया न ही जोशी जी ने. उनके पहले उपन्यास ‘कुरु कुरु स्वाहा’ को आधुनिकोत्तर उपन्यास कहा गया था(उस समय सुधीश पचौरी नहीं थे और उत्तर आधुनिकता प्रचलन में नहीं आया था), इस किताब में उनका एक दुर्लभ लेख है जिसमें उन्होंने आधुनिकोत्तर उपन्यास की अवधारणा के ऊपर विचार किया है. एक लेख में उन्होंने अपने उपन्यासों के ऊपर विचार प्रकट किये हैं. इसमें दो लेख दूसरे लेखकों पर हैं, एक नगेन्द्र पर और दूसरा शैलेश मटियानी पर. ‘गफुआ को गुस्सा क्यों आता रहा’ शीर्षक से लिखा गया एक लेख शैलेश मटियानी के ऊपर लिखे गए कुछ अच्छे लेखों में एक है.
अपने साक्षात्कारों में इतना ईमानदार कोई दूसरा हिंदी लेखक मैंने नहीं देखा. अपने लेखन की कमियों को लेकर, अपनी विराट सफलता से प्रभावित हुए बगैर उन्होंने खुलकर बातें की हैं. लेखक पत्रकार अजित राय के साथ उनकी जो बातचीत है वह तो जैसे उनके लेखन पर मरने से पहले उनका आखिरी स्टेटमेंट जैसा है. प्रसंगवश, उनके मरने से पहले यह उनका आखिरी प्रकाशित इंटरव्यू है. उनका एक लम्बा इंटरव्यू मैं ‘आलोचना’ के लिए लेना चाहता था. जिसके लिए नामवर जी ने उनको कई बार याद दिलाया था, मैं उसकी तैयारी कर रहा था. जो उनके अचानक निधन के कारण पूरा नहीं हो पाया.
जोशी जी के साक्षात्कारों की एक विशेषता यह भी है कि उनमें भी उनका किस्सागो मुखर रहता था. उनके पास कहने को इतना था, जीवन के अनुभव इतने विविध थे कि हर साक्षात्कार में वे अलग लगते हैं. उनके साक्षात्कारों को पढ़ते हुए यह महसूस किया जा सकता है कि हर बार उनका लेखकीय मूड अलग होता था. उनके उपन्यास ‘कुरु कुरु स्वाहा’ में मनोहर श्याम जोशी नामक नायक के तीन रूप दिए गए हैं. उसी की तरह किसी बातचीत में उनका मनोहर रूप हावी हो जाता था, एकदम लेखकों जैसे अल्हड, किसी में जोशी जी जैसा गुरु गंभीर रूप.
यह किताब जोशी जी के पाठकों के लिए, शोधार्थियों के लिए पढने और सहेजने के लायक पुस्तक है. इस साल की कुछ वैसी दुर्लभ किताबों में जिनको मैंने पढ़ा भी और अपनी उस अलमारी में रख दिया जहाँ मैं सहेजने वाली किताबें रखता हूँ.
लिखने में भले देर हो गई हो सहेजने में देर नहीं लगाईं थी मैंने. न लिख पाने के पीछे शायद यह लोभ भी रहा हो कि इस किताब के बारे में मैं किसी को न बताऊँ. जोशी को जानने का एक स्रोत अपने तक ही रखूं. क्या यह सच नहीं है कि जिन किताबों से हम प्यार करते हैं उनको भी सबसे छुपा कर रखना चाहते हैं.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids.
