राष्ट्रीय नाट्य विद्यालय के तीन सालों के दौरान मैंने तीन पतझड़ देखे। ये दूसरे पतझड़ का वाक़या है। उन दिनों एन एस डी में चरस पीने का रिवाज़ था। चूंकि चरस घास हुआ करती है इसलिए पीने वालों को बकरी कहा जाता था। जब किसी बकरी को दूसरी बकरी की ज़रुरत होती तो मिमियाने की ‘मेंहह मेंहह’ से एक दूसरे को रिझाया जाता। दिन भर ये बकरियां जन्नतनशीं होतीं और रात होते होते जिबह हो जातीं।
इतवार का दिन था। अमाल अल्लाना थर्ड इयर के साथ ब्रेश्ट का नाटक ‘औरत भली रामकली’ कर रही थीं। अनुराधा कपूर हमें सल्वादोर डाली की पिघलती घड़ियों और एडवर्ड मुंच की चीख समझा रही थीं। चरस पीने के बाद सब कुछ ज़रा जरूरत से ज्यादा ही समझ में आता था। पतझड़ के सूखे पत्तों में अनघटी प्रेम कहानियाँ नज़र आतीं। कभी कभी इंक़लाब भी दिख जाता। मैं और राजीव मनचंदा ओमी के झुलसते हुए ब्रेड पकोड़े खा कर घास पे लेटे थे। चरस खून में दौड़ रही थी और हरसिंगार के फूल पेड़ों से गिरने के बाद भी हमसे कुछ इंच ऊपर आकर ठहर जाते थे। जिस लड़की से मुझे प्यार था और जो पिछले एक साल से झगड़ा किये बैठी थी, वो पास से गुज़री तो ठहरे हुए फूलों में से एक टपक कर मेरे लबों पे आ गिरा। पता नहीं क्यों बहुत सी चीज़ें दिमाग को तिड़काने लगीं। दुष्यंत कुमार की पंक्तियाँ कि ‘तुम किसी रेल सी गुज़रती हो/मैं किसी पुल सा थरथराता हूँ’ और ‘हंगेरियन रहैप्सोडी’ में शोवान्योस की घाटियों में दौड़ती एना टेकक्स आपस में गड्डमड्ड होने लगे। पिंक फ्लॉयड ‘कोरा कागज़ था ये मन मेरा …’ क्यों गा रहे हैं, ये सवाल मन में उठा ज़रूर लेकिन बस उतना जितना चरस उठने देती है। मैंने एक झटके से सोचा कि बहुत हो गया और उसी झटके से उठ गया। कहीं जाना होगा। कुछ करना होगा। ये सोचती क्या है अपने बारे में? अपने को क्रिस्ताबेल लामोत्त समझती है क्या जो कोई इसके लिए पूरी ज़िंदगी बैठा रहेगा? सूरत देखे अपनी किसी आईने में जाके! नाक अच्छी है लेकिन नीची आके घूम नहीं जाती क्या? आँखें चलो माना कि पनीली हैं चमकीली हैं पर झाँक के देखो तो बस खुद ही खुद दिखती है। ऐंठ तो ऐसी कि रस्सी भी शरम से खुल जाए। राजीव ने अधमुंदी आँखों से मुझे देखा और फिर से मुंद लिया। वो क्या समझता। उसे अभी प्यार होने में कुछ महीने बाकी थे। बाहर निकला तो इरफ़ान सुतपा गोल चक्कर पे बैठे घास नोच रहे थे। थोड़ा और आगे पीयूष मिश्रा रोज़ की तरह बेचारी सहमी सी हवाओ को धमकाने में लगा था। मैं घूम कर बाराखंबा रोड पे आ गया और जो पहली बस मिली उसमें बैठ गया। वो कहते हैं ना कि जब कुछ होना होता है तो कायनात भी आपके इशारे समझती है। चरस और दारू एक जैसी नहीं होती। दारु डुबाती है और चरस उठाती है। बस में कई सीट खाली थीं लेकिन मैं जिस पे बैठा वहाँ एक लड़की पहले से बैठी थी। वो खिड़की से बाहर देख रही थी और उसकी पतली उँगलियों ने एक कपडे के बैग को भींच के पकड़ा हुआ था। मुझ में इतनी शालीनता हमेशा से रही है कि लड़कियों को बस कनखियों से देखा जाए और जताया जाए कि ये कनखियाँ उनके लिए ही हैं। इससे ज्यादा गैर शरीफ़ाना हरक़त कोई और नहीं हो सकती कि किसी भी लड़की को इग्नोर मारा जाए। बस जब कनॉट प्लेस से होके चेम्सफोर्ड रोड पे आयी तो उस लड़की ने कसमसाना शुरू किया। एक और बस स्टॉप के बाद उसने अपने बैग से एक नक्शा निकाल लिया। उस ज़माने के नक़्शे आपको कहीं पहुंचाते कम और भटकाते ज्यादा थे। चरस की एक और खासियत होती है। वो आपको आपकी सतह से उठा के भी ये एहसास बनाये रखती है कि आप सतह पे ही हैं। आप जितना जितना ऊपर उठते जाएँ उतना उतना आपके साथ आपकी सतह भी उठती जाती है। जब वो लड़की खिड़की और नक़्शे के बीच कुछ ज्यादा ही झूलने लगी तो मैंने अपनी टूटी फूटी अंग्रेजी में पूछा – “आय थिंक यू लॉस्ट?” उसने पलट कर मेरी तरफ देखा। ओये तेरी त्तो! इतनी बड़ी आँखें। वो भी परेशान। उसकी तरफ से कोई जवाब नहीं आया तो मैंने ही संवाद पूरा कर दिया – “मी लॉस्ट टू…” उस शाम मुझे बहुत देर बाद पता चला कि उसे अंग्रेजी नहीं आती। कि वो रवांडा से है। कि उसका नाम इरिबग़ीज़ा है। मुझे २३ साल बाद पता चला कि उसके नाम का मतलब होता है कुछ ऐसा जो झिलमिलाता है। दो साल पहले दिल्ली में एशियन गेम्स हो चुके थे। बाहर से आये रेसिंग ट्रैक्स फटने लगे थे और इसके पहले कि जवाहर लाल नेहरू स्टेडियम के ‘घूस’ वो ट्रैक्स पूरी तरह से खा जाएँ, सोचा गया कि एफ्रो एशियन गेम्स कर लिए जाएँ। इरिबग़ीज़ा की बड़ी बहन मारासियन रवांडा के लिए १५०० मीटर की रेस दौड़ती थी और दोनों बहनें इसीलिये दिल्ली आई थीं। इरिबग़ीज़ा को बताया गया था कि जनपथ पे बहुत से एम्पोरियम हैं जहाँ से वो तरह तरह की चीज़ें खरीद सकती है। बस जनपथ से बहुत आगे निकल चुकी थी और उसकी मदद के बहाने मैं उसके साथ हो लिया था। एम्पोरियम बहुत मंहगे थे। लेकिन सड़क पे बिकने वाली न जाने क्या क्या चीज़ें उसने खरीदीं। ऑक्सीडाइज़्ड नथनी, झुमके, चूड़ियाँ, रंग बिरंगे पत्थरों की मालाएं। वो बहुत खुश थी। एकदम बच्चों जैसी खुश। जब हमने गोलगप्पे खाए तो तीखे पानी से वो इतनी ज़ोर से उछली कूदी कि आस पास के लोग हंसने लगे। वो स्मोक नहीं करती थी लेकिन हम दोनों ने मिल के चरस पी। चरस ने उस पे असर तब दिखाया जब हम लौट कर एशियाड विलेज पहुंचे और सुनसान पड़े मेलविल डी मेलो स्ट्रीट पे उसने अचानक से मुझे चूम लिया। पैरों के नीचे अस्फ़ाल्ट था और सर के ऊपर हैलोजेन। उसके होठों पे अभी तक मिर्चीले पानी की ठसक थी। ये चरस ही थी कि वो मिर्चियाँ आज भी किसी कोने में दुबकी हुई है। जैसे हरसिंगार के उन फूलों की तरह ठहर गयी हों। ये चरस ही थी कि लौट के मैं सीधे गर्ल्स हॉस्टल गया। दिल में था की उस ऐंठू लड़की से जा के न जाने क्या क्या कहूँगा। लेकिन बाहर ही बरगद के पेड़ के नीचे सीमा बिस्वास मिल गयीं। उनके हाथ में तीन लिटर वाला कनोड़िआ छाप सरसों का तेल था जो वो अभी अभी बंगाली मार्केट से खरीद कर लौटी थीं। उनसे मालूम पड़ा कि ‘वो’ तो कोई रशियन बैले देखने सीरी फोर्ट गयी है। आज भी बच गयी। पर जितनी भी चरस बची थी मेरे भीतर उसका ज़ोर लगा के मैंने कहा – “सीमा दी … उसे बोल दीजियेगा … ऐसे नहीं चलेगा … ” और उनका जवाब सुने बगैर मैं वापिस पलट लिया। तीन साल बाद उस बल खाती रस्सी ने मेरे साथ सात फेरे घूमे। राजीव, सुतपा, इरफ़ान, पीयूष, हरगुरजीत, सीमा सभी ने जम के शादी के रसगुल्ले उड़ाए। जिन्होंने चरस पीनी थी उन्होंने मंडप के पीछे कई बार जा के पी। सुनते हैं कि शादी करवाने वाले पंडित को भी इसका भोग मिला। २३ साल बाद मीरा नायर की वर्कशॉप के लिए मैं युगांडा गया। मेरा रूम पार्टनर रवांडा से था। उसे मैंने इरिबग़ीज़ा के बारे में बताया। वो मारासियन मुकामोरेंज़ी को जानता था। उस समय मारासियन रवांडा की स्पोर्ट्स मिनिस्टर थी। वापिस लौटते हुए मैं बजाय नैरोबी के रवांडा में रुकता हुआ आया। जहाँ देखो वहां लाल मिट्टी थी। जैसे धूसर में किसी ने खून मिला दिया हो। मारासियन से मुलाक़ात हुई। १९९४ के नरसंहार में लगभग १० लाख लोगों को मार दिया गया था। इरिबग़ीज़ा भी उनमें से एक थी। तब उसकी बेटी ३ साल की थी। मैं जब इरिबग़ीज़ा की बेटी से मिला तो वो १६ साल की थी। उसका नाम है ग्योलप्पा। मुझे याद आया इरिबग़ीज़ा उस दिन गोलगप्पों को यही बोल रही थी- ग्योलप्पा …
