उन्होंने दबा दिये सारे बटन
जल गये सारे बल्ब
अनगिनत रंगों के अपार उजाले में
जगमगा उठा वह महा-शहर
‘कितना अँधेरा है यहाँ?’
मैंने धीरे से कहा
किसी रोशनी से सराबोर सड़क पर चलता हुआ
शहर से निकाला गया मुझे
इतना बड़ा झूठ बोलने के लिए

मैंने समुद्र की प्यास बुझाने के लिए
नहीं खोदा अपने घर के आँगन में कुआँ

कवियों के लिए
नहीं लिखी कविताएँ
मैंने अँगीठी में झोंकने के लिए
नहीं जलाये रखी अपने भीतर
इतने वर्षों से आग
मैं जला ख़ुद ही

मैं हँसा

स्वतंत्रता मैं नहीं देख सका था
मैं जन्मा था पाँच साल बाद
जन्म के बाद के जीवन को जीते रहने का विवरण बहुत लम्बा है
लगभग औसत-
पढ़ाई-लिखाई, प्रेम, नौकरियाँ, रोज़गार, बीमारी, मकान, शहर, किताबें, शादी-ब्याह, संतानें, सिनेमा, अकेलापन, जुलूस, नारे, थकान, बेरोज़गारियाँ, हताशाएँ, मान-अपमान, हर्ष-विषाद वग़ैरह
और अंत में तो ख़ैर
फ़ालतू और उबाऊ
इस वक़्त दीवार पर टँगे कैलेंडर में दिख रहा है इसे, ऐसे ही
जीवन का
आज का, अभी का वर्ष
अभी भी, आज भी, मैं देखना चाहता हूँ एक बार स्वतंत्रता
मेरी अंतिम इच्छा है यह लगभग भाग्यविधाता
