प्रभात रंजन
कथा साहित्य में प्रेम हमेशा एक रूपक की तरह आया है। विश्व की श्रेष्ठ मानी जाने वाली प्रेम कहानियों में रोमियो जूलियट की कहानी यह संदेश देती है कि प्रेम विरुद्धों में सामंजस्य पैदा कर देती है। वह युद्दों का दौर था, नफ़रतों को पीढ़ियों तक संजोने का दौर था। शेक्सपियर ने उसी दौर में प्रेम का एक रूपक बांधा था कि दुश्मन कबीलों के लड़के-लड़की में प्यार हो जाता है। इसी तरह एमिली ब्रांटे के उपन्यास ‘वुदरिंग हाईट्स’ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रेम कहानियों में एक माना जाता है, जो सामाजिक भेदभाव की कहानी है, अमीर-गरीब की प्रेम कहानी भी एक रूपक है। इसी तरह चेखव, ओ हेनरी की कहानियों में वफ़ा, बेवफ़ाई, सच्चाई, उत्कटता, त्याग आदि गुणों को प्रेम के रूपक में बांधा गया है। ओ हेनरी की दो कहानियाँ ‘द लास्ट लीफ़’ और ‘द गिफ़्ट ऑफ़ मैगी’ जैसी कहानियाँ भुलाए नहीं भूलती। प्रेम में एक दूसरे की खुशी के लिए अपनी परवाह नहीं करना एक बहुत बड़ा संदेश है मानवता के लिए।
भारतीय साहित्य में प्यार का सबसे बड़ा रूपक है ‘देवदास’ का, सबसे अधिक भाषाओं में इसके अनुवाद हुए, भारतीय भाषाओं में सबसे अधिक फ़िल्में इस उपन्यास के ऊपर बनी। प्रेम में बर्बाद हो जाने का रूपक, अपने प्रिय की खुशी के लिए अपने आपको बर्बाद कर लेना। अगर इस रूपक को हम ध्यान से देखें तो स्वाधीनता सेनानियों ने इसी भाव से तो संघर्ष किया था- अपने प्रिय देश के लिए अपने जान की परवाह नहीं करना। गौर कीजिए इस प्रेम कहानी में कहीं शरीर नहीं है।
हिंदी की श्रेष्ठ मानी जाने वाली प्रेम कहानियों में भी शरीर, वासना नहीं अव्यक्त, मौन का भाव ही अधिक दिखाई देता है। चन्द्रधर शर्मा ‘गुलेरी’ की कहानी ‘उसने कहा था’ हिंदी की आरम्भिक कहानियों में है और यह अव्यक्त प्रेम के लिए किए गए त्याग की अनुपम कहानी है। प्रेम का अर्थ कुछ पाना नहीं बल्कि सब कुछ खोकर ही उस प्रेम तक पहुँचा जा सकता है-मानुष प्रेम भयउ बैकुंठी। जायसी यही तो कहते हैं कि प्रेम नश्वर को अनश्वर में बदल देता है। जिसे हम प्रेम में पाना कहते हैं वह असल में प्रेम को खो देना होता है। जयशंकर प्रसाद की कहानी ‘आकाशदीप’ की चम्पा याद आती है जो अपने प्रेम के स्थान पर जनसेवा को चुनती है- मिलन अंत है मधुर प्रेम का और विरह जीवन है! सब कुछ पाकर अपने प्यार के उस निष्कलुष भाव को बचाए रखने के लिए सब कुछ खो देना। स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के काल में लिखी गई हिंदी प्रेम कहानियों में यह भाव बहुत प्रबल है।
जैनेंद्र कुमार की कहानी ‘जाह्नवी’ में अपने प्रेमी की प्रतीक्षा में कौवों को रोटी खिलाती नायिका की जब शादी तय होती है तो वह अपने होने वाले पति को पत्र लिखकर यह बताती है कि वह तो अपने प्रेमी की प्रतीक्षा में है। उस समय सबको देश की आज़ादी की प्रतीक्षा थी। प्रेम की पूर्णता देश की पूर्णता से जुड़ जाती है। यहाँ तक कि लोकप्रिय उपन्यासकार कुशवाहा कांत के उपन्यास ‘लाल रेखा’ में लाल और रेखा के बीच देश की आज़ादी के लिए चल रहा संघर्ष है, वही प्राथमिक है।
धीरे धीरे हिंदी में प्रेम जो वर्जित है, जो अनैतिक है उसका रूपक बनता गया है। जो अव्यक्त था वह व्यक्त रूप से मुक्ति की कामना बनता जाता है। प्रकट तौर पर इन कथाओं में बदलाव का कथानक होता था लेकिन उनका कथानक क्रांतिकारी था। जैनेंद्र कुमार के उपन्यास ‘त्यागपत्र’ की मृणाल विवाह और प्रेम के द्वंद्व में प्रेम का रास्ता चुनती है। यही तो कहा जाता रहा है कि प्रेम बंधन नहीं मुक्ति है। अज्ञेय के उपन्यास ‘शेखर: एक जीवनी’ में शेखर-शशि के प्रेम के बारे में उपन्यास में कुछ कहा नहीं गया है लेकिन वही उस उपन्यास की सबसे बड़ी कामना है। प्रेम का अपने ढंग का वह अकेला उपन्यास है जिसमें प्रेम दिखाई नहीं देता है लेकिन सबसे गहरा घाव वही है।
आगे चलकर यह प्रेम धर्मवीर भारती के उपन्यास ‘गुनाहों का देवता’ में एकनिष्ठ प्रेम से आगे बढ़कर यह कहता है कि सच्चा प्रेम केवल एक बार नहीं होता बल्कि वह एक ऐसी कामना है जिसकी चाह में प्रेम बार बार हो सकता है, वह पड़ाव नहीं अनुभव की यात्रा होती है। कमलेश्वर के अपेक्षाकृत कम चर्चित उपन्यास ‘तीसरा आदमी’ में एक छोटे से घर में एक विवाहित जोड़ा रहता है, पत्नी को बग़ल में रहने वाले एक व्यक्ति से प्रेम हो जाता है। यह एक नई तरह का प्रेम है जो परिस्थितिवश होता है। विवाह ज़िम्मेदारी है और प्रेम मुक्ति। ज़रूरी नहीं है कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति इसको इसी रूप में देखे ही। अज्ञेय के उपन्यास ‘नदी के द्वीप’ में प्रेम एक यात्रा की तरह है, जिसमें कुछ प्रेम भरे प्रसंग हैं जो जीवन में यादगार रह जाते हैं। लेकिन जीवन उनके कारण ठहर नहीं जाता। ‘देवदास’ का जो प्रेम दर्शन है उसमें प्रिय के बिछोह के बाद जीवन ठहर जाता है लेकिन निर्मल वर्मा की कहानी ‘एक दिन का मेहमान’ में जीवन आगे बढ़ जाता है लेकिन ठहरा हुआ प्रेम एक दिन उभर जाता है।
लेखिकाओं की प्रेम कहानियों में परिवार, कैरियर, सामाजिकता के कारण दमित रह गया प्रेम उभर कर आता है। मन्नू भंडारी की कहानी ‘यही सच है’ में एक ऐसी स्त्री है अलग अलग समय पर रहे अपने दो प्रेमियों के द्वंद्व में उलझी हुई है। मृदुला गर्ग के बेहद चर्चित उपन्यास ‘चित्तकोबरा’ की नायिका को अपने पति से सब कुछ मिलता है लेकिन प्यार उसको रिचर्ड से मिलता है। एक बार जब रिचर्ड उससे पूछता है कि अगर तुम मेरी पत्नी होती तो नायिका मनु जवाब देती है कि फिर मैं महेश से प्यार करती। महेश उसके पति का नाम होता है। इस तरह यह उपन्यास विवाह की संस्था पर ही सवाल उठाती है। मनोहर श्याम जोशी के उपन्यास ‘कसप’ की नायिका बेबी हिंदी की वह पहली नायिका है जो प्रेम में साहस दिखाती है और विद्रोह की हद तक पहुँच जाती है लेकिन नायक डीडी उसको चादर ओढ़ाकर चला जाता है। पुरुष नहीं स्त्री प्रधान है।
समकालीन लेखिकाओं में नीलाक्षी सिंह की कहानी ‘रंगमहल में नाची राधा’ याद आती है, जिसमें दीवानबाई परिवार के सारे कर्तव्यों को निभाने के बाद साठ की उम्र के पार हो जाने के बाद यह कहती है कि वह विवाह पूर्व के अपने प्रेमी के पास वापस लौट जाना चाहती है। प्रेम के लिए अपना ‘घर’ छोड़ जाती है। प्रेम महत्वपूर्ण होता गया है। सत्तर-अस्सी के दशक तक घर बहुत बड़ी बात होती थी स्त्री के लिए। घर परिवार अब पीछे रह गया है। 21 वीं सदी की स्त्रियाँ अपने कैरियर के लिए जानी जाती हैं, घर-प्रेम उसके फोकस में नहीं है। समकालीन लेखिका अनुकृति उपाध्याय की कहानी ‘शावर्मा’ में करियर की आपाधापी में प्रेम साहचर्य सुख के रूप में आता है। न कुछ होना न पाना, किसी मनचाहे का संग साथ भर, वह भी रिश्तों की किसी भी उलझन से परे। याद आता है कमलेश्वर की आख़िरी कुछ कहानियों में एक कहानी है ‘तुम्हारा शरीर मुझे पाप के लिए पुकारता है’, जिसमें प्रेम की नहीं तलाक़ या ब्रेक अप की पार्टी दी जाती है।
समय के साथ कथा साहित्य में प्रेम का रूप रंग बदलता गया है, उसकी चौहद्दी का विस्तार होता गया है। कभी समाज में अकेले हो जाने का नाम प्रेम था आज इंसान अकेलेपन से मुक्ति के लिए प्रेम करता है।
