आज महात्मा गांधी के चंपारण सत्याग्रह के सौ साल पूरे हो रहे हैं. देश भर में इसको याद किया जा रहा है, इसके बारे में लिखा जा रहा है. गांधी जी की पोती सुमित्रा गांधी कुलकर्णी ने अपनी किताब ‘महात्मा गांधी मेरे पितामह’ में भी इस घटना पर विस्तार से लिखा है. उसी पुस्तक से एक अंश- मॉडरेटर

कानून के सविनय भंग का यह प्रथम किस्सा था. सारे देश में इस घटना की चर्चा चल पड़ी. लेकिन बहुत सोच-विचार के बाद गांधी जी ने बहुत सतर्कता और दूरदर्शिता से इस सारे मामले को राजनीतिक आन्दोलन बनने से बचाया. सारे देश के प्रमुख पत्रकार चंपारण में जुट जाना चाहते थे. लेकिन गांधी जी ने पहले से ही प्रमुख अखबारों को पत्र लिखकर उनके संवाददाताओं को चंपारण आने से रोका था. वे स्वयं तीन चार दिन के बाद बड़ी संयत भाषा में संक्षिप्त रिपोर्ट अखबारों को भेज देते थे. महामना मालवीय जी को केस की पूरी जानकारी थी और उन्होंने गांधी जी को लिखा था कि जरुरत पड़ने पर वे किसी समय चंपारण पहुँचने को तैयार रहेंगे. लेकिन गांधी जी ने उनको भी बिहार पहुँचने से रोक दिया. इस सारे मामले में कांग्रेस का कहीं पर भी नाम नहीं लिया गया, क्योंकि सरकार और गोरे मालिकों को कांग्रेस के नाम से ही नफरत थी. उनका ख़याल था कि कांग्रेस वकीलों के पिष्टपेषण का एक अड्डा था या बम फेंकने वालों या राजनीतिक खून करने वाले आतंकवादियों का गुट था. रैयत भी कांग्रेस के नाम से अपरिचित थी. गाँधी जी को लगा कि कार्यशक्ति और सफल परिणामों से लोग अपने आप कांग्रेस से परिचित होंगे और बिना प्रचारक काम होगा तो अपने आप जनता को कांग्रेस पर श्रद्धा हो जाएगी. इसलिए कांग्रेस का कोई भी व्यक्ति न पहले न बाद में चंपारण पहुंचा था. इन पिछड़े लोगों के लिए चंपारण के बाहर की दुनिया शून्यवत थी. तो भी उन्होंने गाँधी जी को ऐसे अपनत्व से पहचान लिया मानो बरसों पुरानी प्रीत हो. गाँधी के लिए तो इन दीन-हीन फटेहाल खेतिहर मजदूरों में करुणामय भगवान का ही साक्षात दर्शन हुआ. इन्हीं लोगों में गाँधी जी के दरिद्रनारायण विराजित थे जिनकी आराधना उनके जीवन का ध्येय था.
चंपारण में नीलहे गोरों ने जबरदस्त ऊहापोह मचाया और अनेक झूठे लांछन लगाए. खासकर ब्रजकिशोर बाबू को बदनाम करने में गोरों ने कमी नहीं रखी, लेकिन वे जितने हुई बदनाम हुए उतनी ही उनकी लोकप्रियता बढती गई. गांधी जी की सतर्कता और डींग न हांकने की आदत के कारण मामला बिगड़ने से बच गया. ऐसी नाजुक स्थिति में देश के नेताओं या महामना मालवीय को चंपारण लाना अत्यंत हानिकारक होता. यह गांधी जी की दूरदर्शिता और राजनीतिक सूझबूझ का प्रमाण था.
