अमुक शहर का हाथी
‘उन्होंने हमारे हाथी का अपमान किया है, हमारे महिमामय हाथी का!’ द्वार खुलते ही उत्तेजित पुरुष हुँकराया। ‘उन्होंने उसे अपशब्द कहें हैं, उसका मज़ाक़ उड़ाया है! ये सब अब बर्दाश्त के बाहर है!’
‘क्या…?’ घर का मालिक अचकचाया।
‘हाँ। विश्वास करना मुश्किल है न ? हमने उन्हें अपने शहर में आसरा दिया, यहाँ बसने-पनपने, कमाने-खाने दिया, मक़ान और परिवार बढ़ाने, उत्सव और त्यौहार मनाने दिए । हमने उनके रहने-सहने में कभी कोई अड़चन नहीं डाली और उन्होंने इसका बदला हमारे गौरवशाली हाथी पर कीचड़ उछाल कर दिया है ।‘
‘लेकिन …’ घर -मालिक हकलाया, ‘ माने… मैं समझा नहीं…’
‘इसमें न समझने जैसा क्या है? हमारे शहर की शान, हमारी पहचान का अपमान किया गया है। हम चुपचाप कैसे सह सकते हैं ? चलो, हमें उन्हें सबक़ सिखाना है.’
घर-मालिक ने भीतर नज़र डाली। उसकी नन्ही बेटी फ़र्श पर लकड़ी के रंगारंग टुकड़ों से घिरी बैठी थी। वे मिल कर लाल छत और हरी दीवारों वाला खिलौना घर बना रहे थे
‘तुम क्या सोच रहे हो कि वे सिर्फ़ हमारे हाथी को बेइज़्ज़त करके संतुष्ट हो जाएंगे? क़तई नहीं। ये तो सिर्फ़ शुरुआत है। तुम उनकी हैवानी योजना नहीं जानते, दरअसल वे हमारी मासूम बेटियों को बेइज़्ज़त करना चाहते हैं।‘
घर-मालिक का चेहरा सुर्ख़ पड़ गया। ‘उनकी इतनी हिम्मत… ?’ वह घर से निकला और उत्तेजित आदमी के पीछे हो लिया।
कुछ दूर जाने पर उन्हें एक साइकिल-सवार मिला। उसकी साइकिल के हैंडल पर एक थैला लटका था जिसमें से गाजर-मूली-लौकी झाँक रहे थे।
उत्तेजित पुरुष की भौंहे चढ़ गईं। ‘तुम ऐसे समय में सब्ज़ी ख़रीदते घूम रहे हो ? तुम्हें पता नहीं उन्होंने हमारे महान हाथी को गालियाँ दी हैं ? हमारा गरिमामय हाथी, जो हमारे शहर की आन है, उसका सम्मान पैरों तले रौंदा गया है ? चलो, हमारे साथ चलो। हमें अपने आत्मसम्मान की लड़ाई लड़नी है।’
साइकिल-सवार रुक गया। ‘ ओह,’ उसके चेहरे पर असमंजस अँका था , ‘लेकिन मुझे तो घर पहुँचना है, मेरी पत्नी इंतज़ार कर रही है कि में सब्ज़ियाँ लाऊँ तो घर भर के लिए खाना पकाए। ‘
‘हम एक क्षण भी नहीं खो सकते,’ उत्तेजित पुरुष ने कठोर स्वर में कहा। ‘तुम उनके नीच इरादे समझ नहीं पा रहे हो। ज़रा ग़ौर से सोचो, हाथी तो सिर्फ़ बहाना है। दरअसल उनका निशाना हमारी बीवियाँ हैं। पहले उन्होंने हमारे महत हाथी पर हाथ डाला है, पीछे हमारी इज़्ज़तदार बीवियों पर डालेंगे। ।
‘ऐसी बात है?’ साइकिल-सवार गुर्राया।
‘हाँ, हाँ ,’ घर-मालिक ने जोड़ा, ‘उन्होंने हमारी मासूम बेटियों की इज़्ज़त उछालनी शुरू कर दी है। ‘
साइकिल-सवार ने अपनी साइकिल दीवार के सहारे टिकाई और उत्तेजित आदमी और घर-मालिक के पीछे हो लिया।
कुछ आगे जाने पर उन्हें एक औरत आती दिखी। उसके कंधे पर वज़नदार बस्तेनुमा थैला था और वह सर झुकाए, कंधे चुराए चुपचाप चली जा रही थी।
‘ओ ,’ उत्तेजित आदमी पुकार उठा, ‘तुम ऐसे समय में खुली सड़क पर क्या कर रही हो ? तुम्हारी मति मारी गई है? तुम जानती नहीं कि उन्होंने हमारे शक्तिशाली हाथी का अपमान किया है और बड़ी भारी लड़ाई होने वाली है ?’
औरत ने हतप्रभ ऑंखें उठाईं। ‘मैं तो बस काम पर जा रही थी …’ वह धीरे-धीरे बोली।
‘काम पर?’ उत्तेजित आदमी चिल्लाया। ‘क्या पागलपन है। तुम्हारी बुद्धि पर पत्थर पड़े हैं ? वापस घर जाओ और भूल कर भी बाहर मत निकलो।’
‘हाँ, हाँ ,’ घर-मालिक और साइकिल-सवार समवेत सुरों में चिल्लाए, ‘घर वापस लौट जाओ। तुम्हें मालूम नहीं कि वे हमारी मासूम बेटियों और इज़्ज़तदार बीवियों को बेइज़्ज़त कर रहे हैं? अपनी इज़्ज़त बचानी है तो जाओ, घर जाओ और वहीं बनी रहो। ‘
औरत ने अपना शरीर सिकोड़ लिया और सिर और भी झुका लिया। तभी एक ताक़तवर आदमी वहां आ निकला। वह लम्बा-हट्टा-कट्टा था, उसकी बाँहें शहतीरों सरीखी मज़बूत और छाती कपाट सी चौड़ी थी।
‘महाशय,’ उत्तेजित आदमी ने उसे सम्बोधित किया, ‘हमारे साथ चलो। उन्होंने आज सारी हदें पर कर दी हैं। उन्होंने हमारे शहर के गौरव, हमारे पावन हाथी की शान में गुस्ताख़ी की है, उसके बारे में अपशब्द कहे हैं। हम उनसे लड़ने जा रहे हैं। ‘
‘हाँ, हाँ, उन्होंने हमारी मासूम बेटियों और इज़्ज़तदार बीवियों की इज़्ज़त धूल में मिलाई है, उन्हें कहीं का नही छोड़ा है ,’ घर-मालिक और साइकिल -सवार समवेत स्वरों में कुरलाए , ‘हम अब और सहन नहीं कर सकते।’
‘हम तो अब अपने घरों में भी सुरक्षित नहीं… ‘ औरत मद्धम स्वर में बोली।
ताक़तवर आदमी ने उन सब पर निगाह डाली। ‘क्या सचमुच ऐसी बात है ?’
‘बिल्कुल ऐसी बात है। इतने अपमान के बाद कोई कायर ही चुप बैठ सकता है। ‘ उत्तेजित आदमी ने दृढ़ता से कहा।
ताक़तवर आदमी की बाँहें फड़क उठीं। उसकी देह क्रोध से सुलगने लगी। वह उत्तेजित आदमी, घर-मालिक और साईकिल-सवार के साथ चल पड़ा।
वे शहर की गलियों-गलियों गुहारते गुज़रने लगे और जत्थे के जत्थे लोग उनके साथ हो लिए। वे शहर के मुख्य चौक में पहुंचे । उनके चौक में पहुँचते ही गर्म हवा बहने लगी। वन्ध्या रेत के गुबार उठने लगे। वह गर्म, किरकिराती रेत आँखों और कंठों में पैंठ गई। जलती आँखों और कर्कश स्वरों ने मन छील दिए। कोनों-अंतरों में छिपी-बची मृदुता भाप बन कर उड़ गई। चौक में एक आदमी फूलों की क्यारियों की निराई कर रहा था। उसने घुमड़ते लोगों को आश्चर्य से देखा। ‘क्या हुआ ?’ उसने खुरपी नर्म मिटटी में टिका दी। ‘तुम सब कहाँ जा रहे हो?’
‘तुम यहाँ फूल-पौधों से खेल रहे हो और वहाँ हमारी अस्मिता की धज्जियाँ उड़ रही हैं।’ उत्तेजित आदमी ने बाग़वान की झिड़का। ‘तुमने सुना नहीं? उन्होंने हमारे शहर की आन, हमारे शानदार हाथी का अपमान किया है, उसे गालियाँ दी हैं। ‘
‘हमारा हाथी?’ बाग़वान ने दोहराया। उसके चेहरे पर की उलझन और घनी हो गई।
‘हाँ, हाँ , हमारा हाथी, हमारे शहर, हमारी पहचान, हमारी परम्परा का पावन का प्रतीक। उन्होंने हमारे महिमामंडित हाथी को अपशब्द कहे , वे हमारी मासूम बेटियों, हमारी इज़्ज़तदार बीवियों,हमारी सम्मानित माँओं का अपमान कर रहे हैं, वे उन्हें गलियों में बेइज़्ज़त कर रहे हैं, घरों में घुस कर उन्हें आक्रान्त कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने हमारे बुज़ुर्गों के सफ़ेद बालों का भी लिहाज़ नहीं किया, हमारे पुरखों की स्मृतियों को दूषित किया। वे हमारे पौरुष की खिल्ली उड़ा रहे हैं, हमें नेस्तनाबूद कर देना चाहते हैं…. ‘
‘भले लोगों,’ बाग़वान चिल्लाया, ‘ भले लोगों, तुम ये क्या कह रहे हो? मैं सुबह से यहाँ क्यारियों को सींच- गोड़ रहा हूँ, विश्वास करो, ऐसा कुछ नहीं हुआ है। और वैसे भी… ‘
उसका स्वर क्रुद्ध हुंकारों में डूब गया। ‘ये हमारे शहर का द्रोही है, ये उनसे मिल गया है, उनका दलाल है, गुप्तचर है, विश्वासघाती है, कायर है, झूठा है, विक्षिप्त है…’ लोगों ने क्रोध की हिंसा से भरे पैरों से बाग़वान और उसकी यत्न से लगाई क्यारियों को रौंद डाला और ख़ूनी नारे लगाते दूसरी ओर निकल गए।
‘भले लोगों, भले लोगों…,’ पैरों तले पिसता बाग़वान चिल्लाता रहा , ‘ भले लोगों, ये सब झूठ है, झूठ है , हमारे शहर का कोई हाथी नहीं… हाथी है ही नहीं, भले लोगों…’
