हरमिंदर सिंह चहल को हम सब ‘समय पत्रिका’ के संपादक के रूप में जानते हैं। वे बहुत अच्छे लेखक भी हैं। उनका एक उपन्यास पहले प्रकाशित हो चुका है। अभी हाल में ही किंडल पर उनका ईबुक प्रकाशित हुआ है ‘स्टूडेंट लाइफ़ के क़िस्से’। उसका एक अंश पढ़िए-

भविष्य वाला साधु
दूसरे गाँव में एक साधु की चर्चा हो रही थी। सुनने में आया था कि वह चेहरा देखकर भविष्य बता रहा है। कई लोगों को उसने यह बताया कि उनकी मृत्यु कब होगी। बड़ी संख्या में लोग उसके अनुयायी हो गए। मुझे पता चला कि वह हमारे गाँव कल आएगा। मुझे उत्सुकता थी कि मैं साधु बाबा से अपना भविष्य जान पाऊँगा।
रात भर मेरे मस्तिष्क में सैकड़ों प्रश्न मँडराते रहे। सबसे पहले क्या पूछूँगा? मैं बड़ा होकर क्या बनूँगा? दादी और कितने दिन जिएँगी?
आखिरकार सुबह हो गई। रघु एक पतंग लाया था। उसका रंग नीला था, जिसके एक सिरे पर उसने पीले रंग का कपड़ा बाँध रखा था। उसने बताया कि संतुलन के लिए यह जरूरी है। ऐसा उसने एक किताब में पढ़ा था। मुझे शक था इससे पतंग संतुलित नहीं हो सकती, बल्कि वह हवा में डगमगा सकती है। फिर भी प्रयोग के तौर पर कोशिश की जा सकती है। यह आईडिया काम कर गया तो बढ़िया रहेगा। क्या पता इससे कुछ नया विचार मन में आ जाए।
पतंग की शोभा उस कपड़े से बढ़ रही थी। रघु ने अपनी जेब से एक स्केच निकाला। पतंग पर अपना नाम लिखा, एक फूल बनाया।
“मैं चाहता हूँ, तुम भी अपना नाम लिखो।” वह बोला।
“पतंग तुम्हारी है। उड़ाते भी तुम हो। फिर मैं यह कैसे कर सकता हूँ।”
“यह पतंग हमारी है। हम दोनों की। यह हमारी दोस्ती को हवाओं को बताएगी। खुला आसमान हमारी यारी को महसूस करेगा।”
मैंने उसके गोल चेहरे को देखा। उसकी उन आँखों को देखा जिनमें नमीं बढ़ गई थी। हमने एक-दूसरे को देखा।
स्केच से पहले मैंने अंग्रेजी का ‘एच’ बनाया फिर बाकी शब्द। पतंग पर दो नाम अंकित हो गए थे—रघु और हैरी।
“यह यादगार रहेगा।” वह बोला।
मैंने कहा, “आज साधु बाबा आ रहे हैं, जो किसी का भी भविष्य केवल चेहरा देख कर बताते हैं। पतंग कल उड़ा लेंगे।”
रघु बोला, “मुझे मालूम है। माँ ने बताया। वे शाम तक आएँगे। तब तक हम तालाब किनारे पतंग उड़ाते हैं।”
कुछ देर में हम वहाँ पहुँच गए। उस समय तालाब के किनारे घाट खाली था। मंद-मंद हवा चल रही थी। हम पतंग उड़ाने लगे। तभी मेरी नजर एक साधु पर पड़ी जो तालाब के दूसरे किनारे पर खड़ा था। मुझे समझते देर न लगी।
मैंने रघु से कहा, “लगता है यही साधु बाबा हैं। उनके पास चलते हैं।”
हम दौड़कर उसके समीप पहुँचे। साधु स्नान करने के लिए कपड़े उतार रहा था। हमें देखकर उसने झट से कपड़े पहन लिये।
“क्या बात है बच्चा?” साधु बोला।
“आपके बारे में काफी सुन चुके हैं बाबा। पास के गाँव से आए हैं न आप।” मैं हाथ जोड़कर बोला।
“हाँ बेटा, पर तुम यह क्यों पूछ रहे हो?” साधु ने कहा।
“अपना भविष्य जानना चाहते हैं बाबा।” मैं बोला।
“पहले स्नान कर लूँ। उसके बाद दोनों का भविष्य ही नहीं, भूत भी बता दूँगा।” साधु ने अपने कपड़े उतारे और ‘ॐ नमः शिवाय! ॐ नमः शिवाय!’ का जाप करता हुआ तालाब में उतर गया। उसने कहा कि हम उसके कपड़ों और पोटली का खयाल रखें। साधु को डर था कि कहीं कोई उसका सामान न ले जाए। साधु ने नाक बंद कर मंत्र का जाप किया और डुबकी लगाई।
साधु ने फिर कहा ‘जय श्रीराम!’ और डुबकी लगा दी। रघु ने फुर्ती से साधु के कपड़े अपनी कमीज में छिपा लिये और पोटली पास की झाड़ियों में फेंक दी। साधु स्नान करने में इतना मशगूल था कि उसे एहसास नहीं हुआ कि तालाब के बाहर क्या घट रहा है। रघु ने मेरा हाथ पकड़कर खींचा और हम झाड़ियों के पीछे जा छिपे।
स्नान के बाद साधु बाहर आया। उसने अपने कपड़ों को इधर-उधर देखा। वह बेचैन हो उठा। हम सारा नजारा देख रहे थे और रघु खिलखिला रहा था। मैंने रघु को घूरा कि उसने ऐसा क्यों किया। रघु ने मेरे हाथ पर हाथ रखा और बोला, “भरोसा रखो और देखते जाओ, कैसे होगा दूध का दूध और पानी का पानी।”
“साधु हमें मन-ही-मन गालियाँ दे रहा होगा।” रघु ने धीमी आवाज में कहा।
मुझे बुरा लगा रहा था। मैं बोला, “हमने शायद गलत किया बाबा के साथ।”
“असली कहानी अब शुरू होगी। देखो मैं क्या करता हूँ। बस, बीच में टोकना मत।” रघु ने आँखें बड़ी करते हुए कहा।
मुझे रघु पर विश्वास था, इसलिए मैं उसके साथ छिपा रहा। बुदबुदाता साधु गाँव की तरफ बढ़ चला। उसके शरीर का सारा पानी क्रोध की ऊष्मा से उड़ा चुका था, सिर्फ लंगोट में नमी शेष थी। हम उससे उचित दूरी बनाए हुए थे। गाँव में प्रवेश करते ही कुत्तों ने उसपर भौंकना शुरू कर दिया। साधु डर गया। उसने एक लकड़ी उठाई और ‘हट! हट!’ कहकर कुत्तों के झुंड से दूर जाने को कहने लगा।
वे कहाँ मानने वाले थे, लगातार भौंक रहे थे। किसी अर्द्धनिवस्त्र साधु को अपने इलाके में पहली बार देख रहे थे, इसलिए भौंकना स्वाभाविक था।
तभी एक बलवान कुत्ते ने लकड़ी को साधु से छीनकर अपने मुँह में भर लिया। साधु के हाथ-पैर फूल गए। वह जमीन पर गिर गया। बलवान कुत्ता गुर्राया। उसने पंजे से मिट्टी खोदनी शुरू की और उसे पीछे की ओर फेंकने लगा।
“गड्ढा बना रहा है या ललकार रहा है।” मैंने पूछा।
“कब्र बनाएगा यहीं। इसलिए खोद रहा है।” रघु ने हँसते हुए कहा।
कुत्तों ने साधु के चारों ओर घेरा बना लिया और धीरे-धीरे उसकी तरफ बढ़ने लगे। वह बेचारा डर के मारे काँपने लगा।

वह ‘हरे राम! हरे राम!’ का जाप करने लगा। वह अपने में सिकुड़ता जा रहा था। एक कुत्ते ने झट से उसकी लंगोट का छोर मुँह में भर लिया और उसे खींचने लगा। साधु लंगोट को कसकर पकड़े हुए था। टाँगे उसने सिकोड़ कर सीने से सटा रखी थीं। उसने हार मान ली। वह कुत्तों के सामने गिड़गिड़ाकर इज्जत की भीख माँगने लगा। भगवान् का वास्ता देने लगा। तभी कुछ ग्रामीण वहाँ एकत्र हो गए। उन्हें देख कुत्तों का समूह खिसक गया।
साधु ग्रामीणों के सामने हाथ जोड़कर खड़ा हो गया और बोला, “भाइयो, आपने मेरी जान बचाई। आपका बहुत धन्यवाद।”
एक ग्रामीण बोला, “पर आप हैं कौन? यह हालत आपकी कैसे हुई?”
पेड़ के पीछे छिपा रघु सामने आ गया। वह बोला, “मैं बताता हूँ, ये बहुत पहुँचे हुए साधु महात्मा हैं। इनके चर्चे दूर गाँव तक फैले हुए हैं। चुटकियों में किसी का भी भविष्य बता सकते हैं।”
साधु हमें देखते ही आगबबूला हो गया।
वह कुछ बोल पाता कि उससे पहले रघु ने बताना शुरू किया।
“साधु महाराज सबका भूत और भविष्य बताते हैं और वह भी चेहरा देखकर।” रघु की ओर ग्रामीण हैरानी से देखते रहे।
उसने आगे कहा, “…लेकिन साधु महाराज को पता नहीं कि उनके साथ कुछ मिनटों में क्या होने वाला है। उन्होंने हम दोनों का भी तो चेहरा देखा था।”
धीरे-धीरे पूरा गाँव जुटने लगा। नाक सिकोड़कर दुलारी मौसी और साथी महिलाएँ भी पहुँच गईं। साधु अभी तक हाथ जोड़े खड़ा हुआ था। उसके मुँह से एक शब्द न निकला।
“यह करतूत जरूर इन दोनों की होगी।” दुलारी मौसी की काटती नजरें हम पर थीं।
क्या खा जाओगी हमें मौसी? अंडरस्टैंड द डेप्थ ऑफ दी सिचुएशन।
“भविष्य कोई नहीं बता सकता। ऐसे साधु सिर्फ अपना उल्लू सीधा करते हैं। यदि ये सबकुछ जानते तो यूँ गाँव-गाँव न घूमते। अपना भविष्य पता नहीं, दूसरों का बता रहे हैं।” रघु को देखकर मुझे विनय याद आ रहा था। यह जरूर उससे कभी मिला है। बंदा भाषण अच्छा देता है।
“भविष्य नहीं, वर्तमान में जीना सीखो। कर्म करो, करते रहो। फिर देखो तुम क्या हासिल नहीं कर सकते। आसमान से तारे भी तोड़कर ला सकते हो। जमीन को फोड़कर पानी की नदियाँ भी बहा सकते हो। क्या नहीं कर सकते आप लोग। बोलो भारत माता की जय!”
लोग बोल उठे—“भारत माता की जय!”
रघु ने साधु को उसके कपड़े और पोटली लौटा दी। साधु तुरंत वहाँ से भाग खड़ा हुआ।
रघु की सभी ने तारीफ की। दादी ने उसे समझाया कि वह इस तरह का बरताव किसी के साथ न करे।
हम दोनों स्कूल गए और कठिन सवालों को हल किया। दलपत मास्टर ने घर के लिए कोई काम नहीं दिया, क्योंकि गरमी की छुट्टियाँ बीतने वाली थीं। नियमित स्कूल शुरू होनेवाले थे।
“एक सप्ताह कोई पढ़ाई-लिखाई नहीं। मजे करो। लेकिन शैतानी बिल्कुल नहीं।” मास्टर साहब ने कहा।
गीता और रघु की सहायता से मैं दस तक पहाड़े सीख गया था।
“छुट्टियाँ खत्म होने जा रही हैं। मैं एक-दो दिन में वापस शहर जा रहा हूँ।”
“अगले साल फिर इंतजार रहेगा।”
“तुम शरारती हो, पर अच्छे हो।”
“वाकई।”
“हाँ।” मैंने कहा।
