पलाश के फूल
‘पलाश के फूल कितने सुन्दर लगते हैं न’ हॉस्टल से वापस घर जाते समय कविता ने कहा|
आगे बढ़ती हुई गाडी से मुड़कर मैंने पलाश के फूलों को देखने की कोशिश की, मुझे वो उतने सुन्दर नहीं लगे| मुझे लगा पलाश के पेड़ मुझे घूर रहे हैं| सुमित्रा माही की तरह| लम्बे काले पलाश के पेड़, लम्बी सांवली सुमित्रा माही|| मैं पल भर को सहम गयी| गाडी यूनिवर्सिटी गेट के पार हो गयी|
‘माही’ मतलब मौसी| मतलब माँ जैसी| हाँ, सुमित्रा माही तो थी ही माँ जैसी| जब तक मैं असम नहीं आयी थी मेरे लिए माही एक नाम था, मेरे पड़ोस में माही सिन्हा रहती थी, फिर माही विज एक अभिनेत्री का भी नाम था| एक गाना भी था जिसके बोल ‘माही वे’ थे| लेकिन वह कोई रिश्ता भी हो सकता है यह मैंने असम में आकर ही जाना| असम में मौसी को माही कहकर बुलाते|| होस्टल में काम करने वाली महिलाओं को हम माही ही कहते, सड़क पर सब्जियां बेच रही बूढी काकी भी हमारी माही ही थी| होस्टल में रहते और यूनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ते हुए लगभग दर्जन भर माही से हमारी जान पहचान हुई लेकिन सुमित्रा माही उन सबमे अलग थी|
दो साल पहले जब मैं एक महीने के फील्ड वर्क के बाद वापस हॉस्टल आने को हुई थी, तो मेरी सबसे अच्छी और सफाई को लेकर पागल दोस्त कविता ने, एक जहमत उठाई| मेरे कमरे की चाभी किसी माही को देकर कमरे की सफाई करा दी| मैं वापस आयी और आराम से पसर कर सो गयी| शाम में जब हम चाय पर इकट्ठे हुए तो कविता ने मुझे धमकाया-
‘चलो, पचास रूपये निकालो?’
‘कैसे पचास रूपये?’ मैं चौक गयी|
‘तेरा कमरा साफ़ करवाया है, उसके पचास रुपये’
‘तुमने जो किया वो पुण्य था| पैसे मांगकर उसे पाप में तब्दील मत करो|’ मैंने चुस्की ली|
“तू चुपचाप पैसे देती है कि मैं तुम्हारा मर्डर करके अभी महा-पाप कर दूं|’ उसने आँखे तरेर कर कहा|
‘देती हूँ|’ मैंने पर्स टटोलना शुरू किया| ‘वैसे तुमने कमरा साफ़ किससे करवाया?’
‘सुमित्रा माही से’
ये पहली बार था जब मैंने सुमित्रा माही का नाम सुना था| देखा तो उन्हें बहुत बाद में| वैसे भी हम यूनिवर्सिटी शोध करने गये थे, माही वाही से रिश्तेदारी बनाने नहीं| घर और रिश्तेदारों से दूर जाने के लिए ही तो मैं हॉस्टल आयी थी| लेकिन उस दिन जब मेरी तबियत बहुत खराब हो गयी तो घर याद आने लगा| मौसम तेजी से बदल रहा था और खिड़की खोल, फैन चला कर मैं सो गयी| सुबह उठी तो माथा तप रहा था| कुछ खाया भी नहीं जा रहा था| दोस्तों ने जबरदस्ती खिलाया तो उल्टी हो गयी|
‘अभी सुमित्रा माही को भेजती हूँ| वो कमरा साफ़ कर देगी’ कहते हुए दोस्त चले गए और मैं कमरे में अकेले रह गयी|
लगभग पंद्रह मिनट बाद दरवाजे पर दस्तक हुई| हिम्मत बटोर कर मैंने दरवाजा खोला| पर्स लटकाए एक संभ्रांत सी दिखने वाली महिला दरवाजे पर खडी थी|
‘मैं अभी आयी तो लडकी लोग ने कहा रूम 252 जाने को| क्या हुआ है तुम्हे?’ शायद उन्होंने यही कहा|
‘तबियत ठीक नहीं है|’ बस इतना ही कहने की हिम्मत कर पायी मैं| फिर बिस्तर पर जाकर सो गयी|
शाम को दोस्त आये, मुझे जगाया तब मैंने ध्यान दिया, खिड़की से गंदे परदे गायब थे, कमरे से कपड़ों का ढेर गायब था, टेबल पर के जूठे बर्तन धुलकर रैक पर रखे थे, और फर्श पर फेनाईल की खुशबू थी| मुझे समझ आ गया सुमित्रा माही का कमाल है| अगले दिन तक तबियत बहुत हद तक ठीक हो गयी थी| तो जब सुमित्रा माही फिर से कमरे में आयी मैं चेयर पर बैठी दूध गटक रही थी और लैपटॉप खोले कुछ पढ़ रही थी| क़ायदे से तो मुझे उनका ढेरों शुक्रिया अदा करना था लेकिन जाने क्या हो गया मुझे उस पल, मेरे दिमाग में सिर्फ एक ही बात आयी – जाने कितना चार्ज कर दे कल के लिए| फिर मैंने अपना चेहरा सख्त कर लिया|
वो बिलकुल चुप-चुप मेरे धुले कपड़ों का गट्ठर लिए आयी और बिस्तर पर उसे रख कर फोल्ड करने लगी| मैंने तिरछी नजरों से उन्हें गौर से देखा – इकहरा बदन, सांवला रंग, ताड़ जैसा कद, आकर्षक कपडे पहने हुए और होठों पर गहरे लाल रंग की लिपस्टिक लगाए वो एक आकर्षक महिला लग रही थी| मेरे आँखों के आगे से वो सारी माही गुजरने लगी जिन्हें मैंने अब तक देखा था| साड़ी का फेंटा कसे साफ़-सफाई करने वाली माही, पसीने से तर-बतर खाना बनाने वाली माही, नीले रंग की साड़ी में लिपटी सिक्यूरिटी के रजिस्टर संभाल रही सख्त सी माही और यहाँ बेब बनी एक माही|
‘दीदी, बीस रुपये एक बाल्टी कपडे धोने के हुए, कल मैंने दो बाल्टी कपडे धोये तो चालीस रुपये और पचास रूपये रूम सफा करने के’ बोलते समय उनका मूंह पूरा खुल गया था, मैंने गौर किया तम्बाकू खाकर दांत सड गये थे| उनके सड़े दांत देखकर मुझे सुकून मिला| वरना उनके स्टैण्डर्ड से तो मैं काम्प्लेक्स खा रही थी|
सौ रूपये लेकर वो चली गयी, पर मेरे दिमाग में गहरे पैठ गयी| लालची तो वो नहीं है ये मुझे पता चल गया था| फिर कुछ अपने सोच को लेकर शर्मिंदगी भी थी इसलिए मैं उन्हें देख कर मुस्कुराने लगी| वो भी अब मुझे रोज नजर आने लगी, आते जाते, झाडू पोछा लगाते, बाथरूम में कपडे धोते या फिर मेस में खाना खाते| शायद पहले मैंने उनपर ध्यान ही नहीं दिया था|
धीरे धीरे मुझे उनके बारे में बहुत सी बातें पता चली,
‘सुमित्रा माही ने अपने पति को छोड़ दिया है|’
‘सुमित्रा माही की यहाँ स्थायी नौकरी नहीं’
‘सुमित्रा माही को मासिक वेतन नहीं मिलता, लड़कियों के कपड़े धोकर और उनके कमरे की सफाई करके ही उनकी कमाई होती है|’
‘सुमित्रा माही बहुत टिप टॉप में रहती हैं| लड़कियों के रूम की सफाई करती है तो लड़कियां अपने कपडे उन्हें दे देती है| उन्ही से मेकअप का सामान भी मिलता है|’
इन सारी बातों ने सुमित्रा माही में मेरी दिलचस्पी और बढ़ा दी, और एक दिन खाने की मेज पर मैं उनके पास जा बैठी| हुआ यूं कि हमारे मेस में माही लोग बैठ कर खाना नहीं खा सकते, थोड़े गंदे दिखते हैं न| लेकिन सुमित्रा माही, वो तो चकाचक दिखती थी| सुमित्रा माही दोपहर का खाना मेस में ही खाती| हालाँकि वो स्थायी स्टाफ नहीं थी इसलिए उन्हें मुफ्त खाना तो मिलने से रहा, इसलिए जब लंच टाइम 2 बजे ख़तम हो जाता तब तीन बजे वो बचा खुचा लेकर खाने बैठती| आमतौर पर उनकी थाली में होता चार जन का भात और दाल, सब्जी अक्सर ख़तम हो जाती तब तक| किसी दिन अगर सब्जी बच गयी तो सुमित्रा माही चार जन की सब्जी भी लेकर खाने बैठती|
तो उस दिन मैं विभाग से देर से लौटी, देखती हूँ सुमित्रा माही मेस की कुर्सी पर पसर कर बैठी है| भर थाली भात दाल और कटहल की सब्जी लेकर| मैंने जाकर बर्तन टटोले तो भात दाल बचा था, कटहल की सब्जी समाप्त| दीवार पर लटकी घड़ी देखी, पौने तीन| लंच टाइम दो बजे समाप्त हुआ, उसके बाद मुझे खाना मिले, न मिले मेस इंचार्ज की जिम्मेदारी समाप्त| मैंने चुपचाप थाली में दाल भात लिया और सुमित्रा माही के ही टेबल पर बैठ गयी| शायद उन्हें दिखाना भी चाह रही थी कि मेस का पैसा भरकर मैं दाल भात खाऊ और कटहल की सब्जी तुम चबाओं| वो मुझे देखकर मुस्कुराई|
‘कटहल लेगा’ मैंने ना में सर हिलाया| असम में हिंदी बोलने वाले लिंग सम्बन्धी गलतियाँ खूब करते हैं| बंगाल की तरह वो पुलिंग को स्त्रीलिंग नहीं बनाते लेकिन स्त्रीलिंग को भी पुलिंग जरूर बनाते हैं| तो किसी असमिया भाषी से हिंदी में बात करना हो तो खुद से ही ऐसे प्रयोग कर बातचीत को सहज बनाया जा सकता है|
बातचीत शुरू हो गयी| सुमित्रा माही ने अपने बारे में ढेरों बातें बताई|
‘पति दूसरी औरत को पसंद करता था| मैं बहुत दुबली थी तो कहता था औरत नहीं लगती है| फिर मुझको छोड़कर उसके ही पास चला गया|’
‘एक बेटी है, उसको शादी करके दे दिया, वो गुस्सा रहती है कि मैं महंगा कपड़ा पहनती उसको नहीं देती| बताओं दीदी उसको उतरा कपडा पहनने देगा तो उसका सास क्या कहेगा?
‘मैं अच्छा से रहता तो लोग कहता मैं अच्छा औरत नहीं है, बताओ दीदी गन्दा से रहेगा तो कोई मुझे अपने रूम में घुसने देगा?’
‘मुझको तो कोई कमाई नहीं, पहले का जो वार्डन था, केरला से था| बहुत अच्छा था| वही मुझको यहाँ नौकरी दिया| बोला सीट खाली होने पर परमानेंट कर देगा| नया वार्डेन सुनता ही नहीं|’
मैं सुनती रही वो बोलती रही| बाद में जब मैंने यह बात दोस्तों को सुनाई उन्होंने कहा सुमित्रा माही सिम्पैथी के लिए तुमसे ये सब बात कह रही थी कि तुम उसको काम और पैसा दोगी|
पर मैंने उन्हें कभी कुछ नहीं दिया और ना उन्होंने कभी मुझसे कुछ भी माँगा| बस हम मिलने पर एक दुसरे को देख कर वैसे ही मुस्कुराते रहे|
और ऐसे ही एक दिन हमारे यहाँ तुगलकी फरमान जारी हुआ कि कोरोना की वजह से सबको वापस जाना पडेगा| कोई सुनवाई नहीं, कोई रियायत नहीं| आनन-फानन में नोटिस निकलने के चार दिन के भीतर ही हम रफा-दफा कर दिए गए लेकिन वापस आने में एक साल का समय लग गया|
लगभग एक साल बाद जब हम लौटे तो कंचन के पेड़ों पर फूल आ गये थे| हलके गुलाबी और सफ़ेद रंग के कंचन के फूल बड़े प्यारे लगते| लड़कियां फूलों के साथ तस्वीरे खिंचवा रही थी और वापस आने का जश्न मना रही थी| पर यह जश्न सिर्फ कुछ रोज रहा| घर से वापस आने पर जो आजादी की बयार मिली थी उसमें जिम्मेदारियां भरने लगी थी| पिछला एक साल बर्बाद गया था, ना एक भी पेपर निकला था, न शोध ही थोडा आगे बढ़ा था| दो सेमेस्टर कैलेण्डर से गायब थें| तीसरे वर्ष और चौथे वर्ष का काम मुझे एक साथ चौथे वर्ष में करना पड़ रहा था| कुछ लोगों ने आनन-फानन में कोरोना काल में ही शोध जमा कर दिया था, कुछ ने बीच में छोड़ दिया था| होस्टल में सबसे सीनियर अब हमारा ही बैच था और हमारी हालत टाइट हो रही थी| इन सबके बीच मुझे पता ही नहीं चला कि कब कंचन पर फूल कम हो गए और पलाश फूलने लगे| पलाश के लम्बे पेड़ों पर लाल रंग के फूल, कितने मनमोहक लगते है न, विभाग से होस्टल आने के रास्ते में खड़े एक पलाश के पेड़ के पास खड़े होकर मैं सोच रही थी कि एक जानी पहचानी आव़ाज कानों में पडी-
‘कैसा है तुम?’ आव़ाज पर मैंने मुड़ कर देखा| सुमित्रा माही खडी थी|
अचानक उन्हें देख मैं चौक गयी| शायद खुश भी हुई|
‘अच्छी हूँ, आप कैसे हो माही’ जवाब में मुझे भी कुछ तो पूछना था|
‘मैं अच्छा नहीं है, देख नहीं रही हो कितनी दुबली हो गयी हूँ’|’ मैंने उन्हें गौर से देखा| कंधे के पास की हड्डियाँ निकल आयी थी| आँखों में गहरे गड्ढे हो गए थे और चेहरा पिचक गया था| होंठों पर लाल लिपस्टिक उसी तरह था लेकिन चेहरा स्याह हो गया था| शरीर पर साड़ी भी वैसे ही अच्छी थी लेकिन मांस गल गया था|
‘माही आप बीमार थी क्या?, कोरोना था क्या?’
‘अरे कोरोना नहीं था, लेकिन काम नहीं था| सब बंद था, तो मैं कहाँ काम करती| बहुत परेशानी थी मुझे| तुम्हे क्या बताऊँ| अभी लडकी सब आया है तो गार्ड मुझे होस्टल में घुसने नहीं दे रहा, कोरोना कह कर|’
मुझे समझ नहीं आया कि मैं क्या बोलूँ| बस इतना ही कहा – ‘क्या कह रहा है?’
‘होस्टल के गेट पर कहता है डी एस डब्लू से परमिशन लाओ, वो कहता है हॉस्टल वार्डन से पूछो| वार्डेन कहता है हॉस्टल प्रीफेक्ट से पूछो| प्रीफेक्ट बदल गया है, कोई नया है, फोन नहीं उठाता है मेरा|’
‘लेकिन इतना पूछना ही क्यों है माही?, पहले तो आप रोज आते थे न?’
‘ हाँ पहले आने देता था अब कहता है कि मैं घर से आती जाती है तो कोरोना ले आएगी| पता नहीं क्यों कहता है, मुझे तो कोरोना दिखता ही नहीं| बस हमारे लिए ही कोरोना है बाकि सब तो आता जाता है|’
‘मैं पूछती हूँ माही|’ मैंने एक पढ़े लिखे व्यक्ति जैसा आश्वासन दिया और वो चली गयी|
उनके जाने के बाद एक पढ़े लिखे व्यक्ति की तरह अपने काम में व्यस्त हो गयी और किसी से कुछ नहीं पूछा| असल में अपने काम में मैं उन्हें भूल गयी| लेकिन वो नहीं भूली|
एक दिन वो फिर से रास्ते में मिली| बहुत खुश|
‘प्रीफेक्ट से बात हो गया है| उसने कहा है मैं एक रजिस्टर रख दूं होस्टल के बाहर सिक्यूरिटी पर, सुमित्रा माही चाहिए बोलकर| लड़कियां अगर उस पर साइन कर दें तो वो मुझे वापस रख लेंगे| मैंने कहा प्रीफेक्ट से, हो जाएगा साइन, सब लड़की सब करेगा| प्रीफेक्ट तो नया है न| उसको मालूम नहीं सब लडकी खोजता होगा मुझे| अभी एक रजिस्टर भी देकर आयी हूँ| पीले रंग का है उसपर मोर बना है| तुम भी साइन कर देना| पचास साइन होने से मुझे वापस होस्टल में घुसने देंगे| हो तो जाएगा न पचास साइन? मुझे समझ नहीं आया सारी बात कहने के बाद माही ने आख़िरी सवाल क्यों पूछा? या बस आख़िरी सवाल ही दिल से निकला?
‘हाँ माही हो जाएगा|’ मैंने उन्हें आश्वस्त किया, हालांकि मुझे भी नहीं पता कि लड़कियां साइन करेंगी या नहीं|
‘पलाश फूलने लगा है न|’ उन्होंने चलते- चलते कहा|
‘वो तो पहले से ही खिल रहा है माही’
‘अच्छा! मैंने तो आज ही देखा|’ वो चली गयी| उन्हें जाते हुए मैंने देखा सुमित्रा माही बिलकुल पलाश के पेड़ की तरह दिखती है| एकदम लम्बी, सांवली दुबली सी और होठों पर लाल लिपस्टिक|
अगले दिन सबेरे- सबेरे हमने हॉस्टल में यह घोषणा सुनी| ‘सिक्यूरिटी डेस्क पर एक रजिस्टर है, जो लड़कियां चाहती हैं कि सुमित्रा माही काम करे, वो उस रजिस्टर पर साइन कर दें|
‘अभी विभाग जाते समय साइन करती हूँ|’ मैंने सोचा पर भूल गयी| घोषणा सुनने के कुछ दिन बाद होस्टल से निकलते समय वो फिर से मुझे मिली|
‘परेशान| बहुत परेशान|’ मुझे देखा तो भावुक हो गयी,
‘सब पुराना लडकी चला गया है न, नया वाला सब जानता नहीं है मुझे| मैं कितना काम करती थी न| बीस रुपये में एक बाल्टी कपडा धोकर देती थी| ये अन्दर जो माही काम करता है, वो भी नहीं चाहता कि मैं आऊँ| उसको ज्यादा कमाई होता है न अभी| तभी तो कोई साइन नहीं करता| तुमने तो साइन किया न?’
‘हाँ माही, मैंने झूठ बोला|
‘कैसी हो माही?’ हमारी एक सीनियर ने सुमित्रा माही को दरवाजे पर देख कर बोला|
‘ठीक नहीं हूँ|…………… और फिर सुमित्रा माही का वही पुराना किस्सा शुरू हो गया| मौक़ा देखकर मैं भी निकल गयी| विभाग में आज एक साथी का जन्मदिन मनाना था|
वो आखिरी दिन था जब मैंने सुमित्रा माही को देखा| कुछ दिनों बाद कोरोना की दूसरी लहर आ गयी| लड़कियां घर जाने लगी| कमरे खाली होने लगे| यूनिवर्सिटी में आने जाने वालों पर और भी पाबंदी लग गयी| लाख कोशिशों के बाद भी हमें होस्टल में रुकने की इजाजत नहीं मिली| मैंने अपना सामान पैक किया| चलते समय कुछ औपचारिकताएं पूरी करनी थी| उन्हें में एक था घर वापसी रजिस्टर पर साइन करना| साइन करते समय मैंने देखा रजिस्टर का पहला पन्ना फटा था| मैंने पलट कर कवर देखा पीले पन्ने पर नाचता हरा मोर|
‘ये तो सुमित्रा माही का रजिस्टर है न’
‘है नहीं…. था, तीन लड़कियों ने ही साइन किया था तो वो वापस नही आ पाया|’
चुपचाप मैंने पन्ने पर साइन किया| मैं और कविता साथ ही एक ही गाड़ी से निकले|
‘मैं इस कैंपस को बहुत मिस करुँगी| इन पलाश के पेड़ों को मिस करुँगी| उसने कहा तो मैंने मुड़कर पेड़ों को देखा|
फूल बहुत कम हो रहे थें| हवा में सफ़ेद फाएं तैरने लगे थे| काला लंबा पलाश का पेड़ और उस कुछेक लाल फूल, मुझे लगा सुमित्रा माही खडी हैं, और मैं अपनी नजरे नहीं टिका पाई| वो नीचे झुक गयीं|
