प्रवास और यात्राओं का लेखकों के मानस , उनकी रचनात्मकता और कथाभूमि पर प्रभाव जानी हुई बात है। अज्ञेय, निर्मल वर्मा, उषा प्रियंवदा के लेखन में उनके प्रवास और यात्राएँ कथानक और शैली दोनों में मौजूद हैं। एक अंतर्मुखी चेतना, विस्थापन का तनाव और अपरिचित से साक्षात्कार प्रवास और यात्रों की विशिष्ट देन हैं। मैं अपनी यात्राओं से नितारी ऐसी पाँच बातें आपके साथ बांटना चाहूँगी जिनसे मेरा अंतर्जगत समृद्ध हुआ और जिनकी छाया या प्रभाव मेरे लेखन पर है। ये पाँच की सूची क्यों? क्योंकि मैंने बहुत वर्षों कॉर्पोरेट जगत में काम किया है और सूची बनाने की पुरानी आदत है और पांच की संख्या क्योंकि संप्रेषणविदों और मनोवैज्ञानिकों और मैनेजमेंट विशेषज्ञों ने बहुत मेहनत मशक़्क़त के बाद यह खोजा कि हम पाँच के समूहों में सोचते और याद रखते हैं।
प्रवास और यात्राओं से उपजे सभ्यता और संस्कृति के टकराव – कल्चर क्लेशेज़ – रचनात्मकता के लिए अच्छे हैं। ये आपको झकझोरते हैं और आपकी सोच की बुनियादें हिला देते हैं, और ये बहुत अच्छा है। सब सीखा हुआ और जाना हुआ नए सिरे से समझना होता है, अपने सारे सच फिर से जाँचने होते हैं । मेरा जन्म और परवरिश जयपुर में हुआ और मेरा पहला प्रवास होन्ग कोंग के वित्त केंद्र में जहाँ मैं बहुत वर्षों रही । एक बहुत गुँथे हुए और आत्मीय, पारम्परिक परिवेश से, जहाँ किताबें और लेखन, गीत-कविता , तीज-त्यौहार, परिवार-परिजन ही सब कुछ था, जहाँ धन विद्या और नियम बड़ों की आज्ञा था और स्त्री-पुरुषों के करणीय बहुत सफ़ाई से विभाजित थे, भले ही वे बराबरी के मूल्य पर खरे न उतरें किन्तु उनमें कोई दुहेलापन नहीं था, ऐसे माहौल से मैं हॉंग कॉंग की घोर अर्थवादी व्यवस्था में पहुँची जहाँ सफलता का पैमाना वर्षांत पर मिलने वाला बोनस था, और स्त्री, पुरुष और परिवारों के सम्बन्ध एक भिन्न सांचे में ढले थे, उनमें एक तरह का खुलापन और अकुंठा तो थी लेकिन साथ ही अस्थिरता और चिंताएँ भी थीं। बहुत बाद में , जापानी सराय की कहानियाँ लिखते समय, महानगर और बहु-सांस्कृतिक माहौल के ये पहले अनुभव मेरी कुछ कहानियों – शावरमा और छिपकली और डेथ सर्टिफिकेट में – सहज रूप से प्रकट हुए।
हॉंग कोंग का एक घटना-चित्र यहाँ बाँटना चाहूँगी जो मेरे मन में उस के रूप में सुरक्षित है – सेंट्रल की लंच के समय की भीड़ भाड़ में एक चीवर धारी बौद्ध भिक्षु, हाथ में अष्टधातु का सिंगिंग बोल लिए सड़क किनारे खड़ा है, आते-जाते ऑफिस कर्मी उसके पात्र में सिक्के डाल देते हैं और वह अपने पात्र को लकड़ी की छोटी सी मूसल से टंकार कर आशीर्वाद दे देता है और बीच बीच में चीवर में सिली जेब से मोबाइल फोन निकाल कर बतिया भी लेता है ! धर्म, अर्थ और टेक्नोलॉजी का सटीक समागम!
दूसरा बिंदु, मैंने जाना कि प्रवास एक चुना हुआ निर्वासन है , प्रवास की व्यग्रता लेखन के लिए खाद है। प्रवास का एक ख़ास क़िस्म का अपराधबोध होता है – जहाँ हैं वहाँ का न होने का भाव और अपने देश में लौटने पर वहाँ भी एक तरह की विच्छिन्नता, एक विचित्र परायापन, जो जाने अपने भीतर से उगता है या बाहर से ओढ़ा दिया जाता है (‘अरे, ये तो दो दिनों को आए हैं , इन्हें यहाँ का क्या पता…’)। विदेश में अपने देश को लेकर अति संवेदनशीलता महसूस होती है, कोई भी बात आलोचना लगती है और आलोचना से मन तुरंत आहत हो जाता है। हर रिवाज़, हर परंपरा को निभाना, छूटे की स्मृति को संजोए रखना क्योंकि अपने देश और अपनी संस्कृति से जुड़ाव ही अपनी पहचान बनाए रखने का ज़रिए है, वही अजनबी भीड़ में खो जाने से बचा सकता है, अपने निजत्व को तिरोहित होने से सहेज सकता है। वहीँ दूसरी ओर रोजमर्र्रा के माहौल में घुलना मिलना भी चाहते हैं , सांसारिक पैमानों पर सफल भी होना चाहते हैं। इस विरोधाभास और उधेड़बुन से जो द्वंद्व और बेचैनी पैदा हुई उसका मेरी रचना शक्ति और रचनाकर्म पर असर पड़ा।
तीसरा, प्रवास और यात्राओं के अपरिचय से उपजी उत्सुकता और फ़्रस्ट्रेशन दोनों रचनात्मकता के लिए अच्छे हैं। नया परिवेश और अनजान लोगों से मध्यम दूरी अंतर्मुखता को तीखा करता है। दूसरों को पूरी तरह न समझ पाना कल्पना के लिए वक़्फ़ा छोड़ता है। अपरिचय और अपरिचितों का मेरी कहानियों में महत्त्व है, जापानी सराय का मरीन ज़ूलॉजिस्ट हो या चैरी ब्लॉसम का एकाकी शराबी या रेस्ट रूम में रोने वाली लड़की – सब दूसरी नस्लों, दूसरी संस्कृतियों के हैं लेकिन एक ही मानव संवेदना उनमें स्फुरित है। अपने निज के अनुभव रचनात्मकता को एक सीमा तक ही ले जा सकते हैं, उत्सुकता का कल्पना से समाधान लिखने की ज़रूरी शर्त हैं। नई जगहों पर यह उत्सुकता अधिक उद्वेलित होती है, हर दृश्य, इन्द्रियों को उद्बुद्ध करता है – दो लोग पार्क की बेंच पर साथ बैठे हैं और एक दूसरे की ओर नहीं देख रहे, सामने तालाब में तिरती बत्तखों को देख रहे हैं, सहसा एक बत्तख परों की घनी फड़फड़ाहट के साथ उड़ती है, स्त्री पुरुष के हाथ से धीरे से अपना हाथ अलहदा कर लेती है और गहरी साँस लेती है। बस, मेरी कल्पना के पक्षी की उड़ान के लिए ये दृश्य काफ़ी है।
चौथा, यात्राएँ सिर्फ़ स्थूल स्थानों की नहीं होतीं , सिर्फ दर्शनीय जगहें देख लेना और तस्वीरें खींच लेना यात्रा नहीं है, स्थानों को अनुभव करना, भले ही बाहरी व्यक्ति की दूरी से ही , लेकिन जिज्ञासा और खुले मन से लोगों और परिवेश को अनुभव करना असली यात्रा है। जापान मेरे रचना मानचित्र में एक विशिष्ट स्थान रखता है, जापान की सौंदर्य चेतना , वहाँ के विरोध भास , जापानी व्यंजन, जापानी साहित्य – ये सब मेरी जापान यात्राओं का हिस्सा हैं। उएनो पार्क और इम्पीरियल गार्डन और सुमीदो नदी के किनारे देखे चैरी के फूल मेरे लिए अधूरे होते अगर मैंने हनामी मनाते परिवारों और सहकर्मियों को नहीं देखा होता, और साइकिल टूर पर ले जाने वाले गाइड या रास्ते में मिली लड़की या पंखुरियाँ चुनते बच्चों से जापानी के कुछ शब्दों और बाक़ी इशारों में बातें न की होतीं। जापान की टी सेरेमनी और संग्रहालय, मंदिर और ज़ेन उद्यान बेशक देखने योग्य हैं , लेकिन मेरे लिए टोक्यो और क्योटो के छोटे छोटे लोकल बाज़ार और रिहायशी गलियों की शांत आवाजाही भी उतनी ही दिलचस्प है। सौ साल पुरानी मेजी shrine और उसके चारों ओर का शांत-विस्तृत वन आकर्षक है तो उसके बाहर बैठे, एनीमे के किरदारों जैसे चित्र-विचित्र कपडे पहने, बाल रंगाए किसी भविष्यत काल से आए-से किशोर दल भी विलक्षण हैं।
पाँचवाँ, यात्राओं की एक प्राप्ति यह है कि स्थान चरित्रों का रूप ले लेते हैं। वहां के ब्यौरे और वर्णन, सड़कें, ट्रेनें , खाना, यानी एक संस्कृति का एक निगाह में देखे जाने योग्य तमाम तामझाम, सब लेखन में उतना ही महत्त्व ले लेते हैं जितना कि कहानी के मानव-किरदार। जापानी सराय की कहानियों में टोक्यो और होन्ग कोंग चरित्र हैं, मेरे नए हिंदी लघु उपन्यास, नीना आंटी जो राजपाल से इस वर्ष आ रहा है, में जयपुर शहर एक चरित्र है जो कहानी को आगे ले जाता है और अंग्रेज़ी में इस साल आने वाले ुओंयास, किन्तसुगी, में जापान के हकोने और क्योटो, सिंगापुर और बोर्नेओ किरदारों की तरह है।
नई जगहों की यात्राएं भिन्नता उजागर करती हैं और समानताएँ भी। नएपन में जाने हुए का आरोप, यात्राओं में एक निरंतर अंतर्यात्रा, खोने, पाने और भूल जाने का भान मेरे लिए यात्राओं का अंग हैं और लेखन का भी।
बिल्कुल सही! एक कॉर्पोरेट ही इतना सधा हुआ लेख लिख सकता है…
