हाल में राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा की किताब आई ‘बेगम समरु का सच’। संवाद प्रकाशन से आई यह किताब तथ्यात्मक इतिहास नहीं है बल्कि औपन्यासिक शैली में लिखा गया उस युग का जीवंत कथानक है। इस पुस्तक की भूमिका प्रसिद्ध पत्रकार शम्भूनाथ शुक्ल ने लिखी है। आप भी पढ़ सकते हैं- जानकी पुल।

इतिहास में कुछ पात्र तो जरूरत से ज्यादा स्थान पा जाते हैं, और कुछ के बारे में वह मौन साध जाता है. इतिहासकार अपनी मेरिट का हवाला देकर लोक इतिहास को खारिज कर देते हैं. नतीजा यह होता है, कि ये कम चर्चित पात्र धीरे-धीरे इतिहास से भी विलीन हो जाते हैं. इन पात्रों को खोजने और फिर उन्हें उनका उचित स्थान दिलाना निश्चय ही बहुत मुश्किल काम है. इसके लिए हमें कुछ कुछ दस्तावेज़ों और कुछ किंवदंतियों का सहारा लेना पड़ता है. इतिहास में वीरों का सम्मान नहीं, अपितु बादशाहों और माहिर षड्यंत्रकारियों को उचित सम्मान मिलता है. भारत, जहां अधिकतर इतिहास लोक में ही ज़िंदा है, वहाँ अनाम वीरों को खोजना और उनका अधिकृत इतिहास लिखना बहुत मुश्किल काम है. उनके लिए फिर वे लेखक आगे आते हैं, जो इतिहासकार नहीं हैं, लेकिन उनकी अपनी संवेदना उन्हें उनसे जोड़ती है. इसमें दो तरह के खतरे सदैव रहते हैं, एक तो अतिरंजना और दूसरे लेखक की अपनी श्रद्धा अथवा अश्रद्धा. क्योंकि अगर उस पात्र के प्रति लोक की श्रद्धा को निकाल दिया जाए, तो उसे विद्वानों के बीच पहुंचाना कठिन हो जाएगा.
ऐसा ही भूला-बिसरा एक पात्र है, दिल्ली के करीब की बेगम समरू. दिल्ली के अंदर आज भी उनकी हवेलियाँ उनका इतिहास तो बताती हैं, लेकिन उस वीर एवं बहादुर तथा तुरंत निर्णय लेने वाली महिला को हम ‘नाच-गर्ल’ या नर्तकी कह कर खारिज कर देते हैं. उस पर तवज्जो देने की फुर्सत किसी को नहीं मिलती. दिल्ली में चाँदनी चौक स्थित भगीरथ पैलेस में आज जो स्टेट बैंक की बिल्डिंग है, और जिसे पहले इंपीरियल बैंक कहा जाता था, वह बेगम समरू की ही बिल्डिंग है. कौड़ियापुल के समीप पुरानी दिल्ली स्टेशन को मुड़ते ही बाईं तरफ कोने पर जो हवेली है, वह बेगम समरू की ही मिल्कियत है. मालूम हो कि दिल्ली के कई रेजीडेंट बहादुर बेगम की मेहमान-नवाज़ी का लुत्फ उठाने इसी कोठी पर आते थे. यह भी कहा जाता है, कि लखनऊ का राज भवन भी बेगम समरू का ही गेस्ट हाउस था. बाकी मेरठ के करीब सरधना में बेगम समरू का महल और उसका बनवाया गिरिजा घर आज भी अपनी शैली में अद्वितीय है.
मार्च 1707 में औरंगजेब की मृत्यु के बाद से ही भारत, जिसे तब हिंदुस्तान कहा जाता था, के दुर्दिन शुरू हो गए थे. उनके बाद जो भी मुगल बादशाह दिल्ली के तख्त पर बैठा, वह या तो नाकारा निकला अथवा हद दर्जे का विलासी. दूसरी तरफ औरंगजेब की अति केन्द्रीकरण की नीतियों से आजिज़ आकर दक्षिण में मराठे और उत्तर में राजपूत, सिख तथा जाट किसान विद्रोही बनते जा रहे थे. इनके अंदर राज करने की लालसा भी बढ़ रही थी. उधर दिल्ली के नाकारा बादशाह, अपनी फौजें तो नियंत्रित कर नहीं पा रहे थे, इसलिए वे भाड़े के सैनिकों को भर्ती कर रहे थे और इसको उससे तथा उसको इससे लड़वा कर किसी तरह चीजों को काबू में रखने की असफल कोशिशों में जुटे थे. इन भाड़े के सैनिकों (मर्सीनरीज़) में या तो पश्चिम और मध्य एशिया से आए दुर्दांत लड़ाके थे, अथवा योरोप के व्यापारी, जो भारत में व्यापार करने एवं अपनी अद्योगिक क्रांति से उत्पन्न उत्पादों को भारत में ठेलने खातिर टहल रहे थे. ये मक्कार व्यापारी उस पूंजीवाद के वेस्टेज थे, जिनके लिए दीन, ईमान, धर्म-अधर्म सिर्फ पैसा था. दिल्ली का बादशाह इनके फेर में आ गया.
ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी बनाकर डच, फ्रेंच और अंग्रेज़ अपनी-अपनी जुगत भिड़ाने में लगे थे. पुर्तगाल तो दो सौ साल पहले से ही अरब सागर में बंबई से कोचीन तक क़ाबिज़ था. दिल्ली के बादशाह कभी इस कंपनी पर भरोसा करते, तो कभी उस कंपनी पर. ऐसे में कई बहादुर लड़ाके और चतुर खिलाड़ी दिल्ली को अपने क़ब्ज़े में लेने को जुटे थे. कहीं सैयद बंधु थे, तो कहीं नादिरशाह तो कहीं अहमदशाह अब्दाली और उसके लोग. ऐसे ही वक़्त में एक फ्रेंच लड़ाका रेनहार्ट सोंब्रे भारत आया. सिराजुद्दौला और फिर मीर कासिम का भरोसेमंद रहकर उसने बहादुरी दिखाई. धीरे-धीरे उसकी पैठ मुगल दरबार में हो गई. मुगलों के संसर्ग में रह कर वह हिंदुस्तानी तहज़ीब और फारसी भी सीख गया, तथा हिन्दुस्तानी रुचियाँ भी. कई युद्ध में उसने बड़ी बहादुरी दिखाई. उस समय दिल्ली के तख्त पर शाहआलम द्वितीय बादशाह था, उसने सोंब्रे की बहादुरी पर खुश होकर उसे अपर दोआब में फैले सरधना से टप्पल तक की रियासत समरू को दे दी. अब उसे समरू साहब कहा जाने लगा.
चाँदनी चौक के करीब स्थित एक कोठे पर सोंब्रे की मुलाक़ात नर्तकी फ़रजाना से हुई थी. फ़रजाना भी किस्मत की मारी थी. उसका जन्म मेरठ में एक पठान पुरुष और उसकी कश्मीरी स्त्री के गर्भ से हुआ था. वह उसकी दूसरी बीवी थी. बाप की मौत के बाद सौतेले बेटे ने इन माँ-बेटी को घर से निकाल दिया. दोनों बेसहारा दिल्ली आए. यहाँ जामा मस्जिद की सीढ़ियों पर माँ बेहोश हो कर गिर पड़ी. संयोग से उस समय वहाँ पर चाँदनी चौक के एक नामी कोठे की मालकिन गुलबदन बेगम मौजूद थी. वह इन माँ-बेटी को अपने कोठे पर ले आई, जहां बेटी फरजाना को विधिवत नृत्य और गायन की ट्रेनिंग दी. सन 1767 में जब फ़रजाना लगभग 16 साल की थी, सोंब्रे नाच और गाना सुनने गुलबदन के कोठे पर आया. वहाँ पर संयोग से उसके समक्ष फ़रजाना ने ही कत्थक शैली में नृत्य प्रस्तुत किया, और मीरा का एक भजन- “नहिं ऐसो जनम बारंबार!” गाया. सोंब्रे उसकी सूरत, सीरत और गले पर ऐसा मुग्ध हुआ, कि उसने फरजाना से शादी ही कर ली. यही फरजाना बेगम समरू कहलाईं, जिनके चातुर्य और कूटनैतिक कौशल का लोहा खुद मुग़ल बादशाह शाहआलम द्वितीय भी मानता था.
शादी सोंब्रे के लिए शुभ रही. उसे सन 1767 से 1772 तक भरतपुर और डीग रियासत में राजा जवाहर सिंह की सेवा में रहने का भी अवसर मिला था. यह रियासत तब उत्तर भारत में सबसे बड़ी रियासत थी. सन 1773 में उसे शाह आलम ने बुला लिया. समरू साहब ने तब बागी रोहिल्ले जाबिता खाँ को पकड़ा और सज़ा दी. मुगल बादशाह शाहआलम ने खुश होकर उसे सरधना की जागीर दी. सन 1778 में उसके अधिकार और बढ़े, तथा उसे सरधना की जागीर के साथ-साथ आगरा का सिविल और मिलिट्री गवर्नर बना दिया, लेकिन इसी वर्ष 4 मई को सोम्ब्रे उर्फ समरू साहब की मृत्यु हो गई. इसके बाद शुरू होता है फरजाना यानी बेगम समरू का इतिहास. मुगल सम्राट ने इसी साल फ़रजाना को सरधना की जागीर का नियंत्रण दे दिया. तीन साल बाद सन 1781 में फ़रजाना ने आगरा के रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च में ईसाई धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया. वह अब जोहाना नोबलिस नाम से जानी जाने लगी और उसका बेटा ज़फरयाब लुई बाल्थ्ज़र रेन्हार्ट के नाम से. बेगम की उम्र अभी बहुत कम थी, मात्र तीस वर्ष और वैधव्य का जीवन. उसी समय 1787 में जार्ज थॉमस सरधना की सेना में एक बटालियन का इंचार्ज बना. बेगम की रुचि उसमें जागी, लेकिन तभी एक फ्रेंच अधिकारी ली-वासे बेगम की सेना में आया और बेगम का रुझान तेज़ी से इस फ्रेंच सैन्य-अधिकारी के साथ होने लगा. इसी समय एक ऐसी घटना हो गई, जिससे मुगल सम्राट को फरजाना की अक्लमंदी का अंदाज़ा हुआ. रूहेले सरदार गुलाम कादिर ने शाहआलम को बादशाह के तख्त से उतारने का षड्यंत्र रचा. बेगम ने यह जानकारी किसी तरह बादशाह तक पहुंचा दी. बादशाह खुश हुआ, और उसने फरजाना बेगम को ‘ज़ेब-उन-निसा’ की उपाधि से नवाजा।
साल 1788 में गोकुलगढ़ की लड़ाई में बेगम ने शाहआलम की जान बचाई. बादशाह ने इसका अहसान माना और बादशाहपुर-झरसा की कीमती ज़मीन बेगम को सौंप दी. लेकिन रूहेला सरदार गुलाम कादिर अपने कुचक्रों में लगा था. उसने किसी तरह बादशाह को बंदी बना लिया और निर्दयतापूर्वक उनकी आँखें नुचवा लीं. हरम में बेगमों के साथ वहशीपना दिखाया. उसने बिदारबख्त को दिल्ली के तख्त पर बैठा दिया, तथा मुगल सम्राट सम्राट शाहआलम के बेटों को सलीमगढ़ जेल में डाल दिया. बेगम को जैसे ही पता चला, वे टप्पल से दिल्ली आईं. मराठा सेनापति राणा खाँ को भी बादशाह की मदद के लिए भेजा गया. राणा खाँ के भय से गुलाम कादिर लाल क़िला छोड़कर भाग गया. शाहआलम द्वितीय को फिर तख्त पर बैठाया गया. गुलाम कादिर को पकड़ कर लाया गया, और उसे तथा बिदारबख्त को फांसी की सज़ा दी गई।
बेगम की फौजों के दो गोरे अधिकारी आयरिश जार्ज थॉमस और फ्रेंच ली-वासे परस्पर भिड़ गए. जार्ज थॉमस ने नाराज होकर टप्पल को स्वतंत्र घोषित कर दिया. ली-वासे ने बेगम के कान भरे. बेगम ने जार्ज को क़ैद कर लिया. ली-वासे बेगम का करीबी होता गया. चर्चा यह भी रही, कि दोनों ने शादी कर ली है. इससे फौज में नाखुशी बढ़ी. इसी बीच जार्ज थॉमस बेगम का साथ छोड़ कर मराठा जागीरदार के यहाँ पहुँच गया. वहाँ सेना में उसे अच्छी जगह मिल गई. सन 1794 में महादजी शिंदे की मृत्यु हो गई, और उधर बेगम ने ली-वासे के कहने पर अप्पा खाँड़े राव और जार्ज थॉमस के विरुद्ध अभियान छेड़ दिया. बेगम की सेना में फूट पड़ गई. बेगम ने अभियान रोक दिया, किन्तु उनकी सेना के तेवर वैसे ही रहे. बेगम और ली-वासे ने फरार होने की योजना बनाई, मगर पकड़े गए. ली-वासे ने तो ख़ुदकुशी कर ली, पर बेगम इस प्रयास में नाकाम रहीं. उन्हें बंदी बना लिया गया. जागीर भी चली गई. तब उसी जार्ज ने ही उनकी मदद की जिसे बर्बाद करने के लिए उन्होंने अप्पा के विरुद्ध अभियान चलाया था. अब जागीर भी उन्हें मिल गई और बागी नेता जफरयाब को क़ैद कर लिया गया.
बेगम महादजी को धन्यवाद देने आगरा गईं, किन्तु तब ही जार्ज थॉमस के विरुद्ध सिख, राजपूत और मराठों ने साझा अभियान शुरू किया. जार्ज को हांसी के राजा के पद से भी हटा दिया गया. जेल में ही जफरयाब की मृत्यु हो गई. और बाद में आयरलैंड की वापसी की इच्छा लिए जार्ज की भी. तब तक अंग्रेजों की ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी ताकतवर हो चुकी थी. बेगम ने अंग्रेजों से दोस्ती रखी. बेगम ने लॉर्ड वेलेजली को सरधना में फौज रखने की पेशकश की, लेकिन अंग्रेज़ अफसरों को बेगम पर भरोसा नहीं था. इसी मध्य सन 1804 में सिखों ने सहारनपुर पर कब्जा कर लिया और अंग्रेज़ कलेक्टर जीडी गुथारी को क़ैद कर लिया. बेगम ने इस कलेक्टर को सिखों से छुड़वा लिया. तब 1805 में कंपनी ने बेगम की जागीर को मुक्त कर दिया. रेजीडेंट ओक्टरलोनी ने अपने खरीते में इसका उल्लेख किया है. बेगम को आधी सेना रखने की अनुमति मिली. लॉर्ड कार्नवलिस ने भी बेगम की जागीर की यथास्थिति बहाल रखी. जुलाई 1807 में बेगम ने ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी से अनुरोध किया, कि उनकी विरासत का मसला तय कर दिया जाए. चार अगस्त को कंपनी ने उनका प्रस्ताव मंजूर कर लिया. 1808 में जफरयाब की बेटी जूलियाना के बेटे डेविड का जन्म हुआ, बेगम ने इसे अपना दत्तक पुत्र मान लिया. 1822 में सरधना का मशहूर चर्च बनवाया. लेकिन 1827 में डेविड के पिता डायस ने बेगम का तख़्ता पलटने की साजिश की, मगर मेरठ छावनी के कर्नल क्लेमेंट्स ब्राउन ने बेगम का साथ दिया. और साजिश नाकाम रही. 1831 में बेगम ने अपनी वसीयत बनवाई, और रोज़मर्रा के काम-काज डेविड को सौंपे. 1834 में बेगम ने डेविड के नाम गिफ्ट डीड लिखी. दो साल बाद 1836 में बेगम की मृत्यु हो गई।
बेगम की क्रोनोलोजी बस इतनी सी ही है. वे 1751 में पैदा हुईं, और 1836 में मर गईं. लेकिन इस 85 साल की उम्र में बेगम ने जो इतिहास रचा वह अद्वितीय है. खासकर उस दौर में जब भारत की राजनीति में कुचक्र, साजिशें, षड्यंत्र और लूटपाट आम बात थी. खुद राजा और बादशाह ही नहीं सुरक्षित था. हर कोई किसी न किसी के विरुद्ध साज़िश कर रहा था. कोई सरकार ऐसी न थी, जो स्थिर कही जा सके. यहाँ तक कि ब्रिटिशर्स भी. न उनका कलेक्टर, न कम्पनी न उनकी सेना. मगर बाज़ार की चाहत उन्हें यहाँ रोके थी. एक ऐसे काल में किसी रानी का बार-बार अपनी रियासत बचाना और सत्ता संतुलन बनाए रखना आसान नहीं था, खासकर उस रानी का, जिसका कोई इतिहास नहीं, कोई अतीत नहीं और कोई भी स्थिर भविष्य नहीं. कब वह राजमहल से निकल कर फिर कोठे पर चली जाएगी, इस बाबत भी कोई निश्चिंतता नहीं. मगर यह बेगम की बुद्धि ही थी, जिसके बूते वह कोठे से निकल कर इतनी बड़ी मलिका बनी. यकीनन बेगम समरू को इतिहास में याद रखना चाहिए, पर उस दौर के दस्तावेज़ बेगम के बारे में बहुत कुछ नहीं बताते. यह दुर्भाग्य ही कहा जाएगा, कि बेगम समरू का इतिहास लिखने में किसी ने रूचि नहीं दिखाई. मेडवेल और मुगलों का पतन लिखने वालों ने भी बेगम को विस्मृत कर दिया. ऐसे समय में अगर बेगम समरू का सच बताने को कोई लेखक आतुर दिखे, तो उसके प्रयास की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा होनी चाहिए।
यह प्रसन्नता की बात है, कि विद्वान लेखक राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा ने बेगम समरू के सच को बताने का साहस किया. बेगम समरू के इतिहास के अनखुले पन्नों को झाँकने की हिम्मत उन्होंने दिखाई, और यकीनन उस काल को जस का तस दिखाने के लिए उन्हें बहुत मेहनत करनी पड़ी होगी. कुछ चीज़ें ऊपर से जितनी सहज और आसान दिखती हैं, वैसी होती नहीं. उनकी परतों को खोलने का दुर्गम प्रयास जब आप करते हैं, तब पता चलता है, कि अरे एक के बाद अनेक पर्दों में छिपा यह सच तो बहुत ही विचित्र है. यह सच है, कि बेगम हमारे बहुत करीब के इतिहास की हैं. उनकी हवेलियाँ, महल और चर्च सब मौजूद हैं, लेकिन इस बेगम के बारे में दस्तावेज़ नहीं हैं, खरीते नहीं हैं और इतिहासकारों की लेखनी नहीं है. कितना श्रमसाध्य है, ऐसी बेगम का इतिहास खंगालना और फिर बेगम में रूचि लेकर पढने वाले पाठकों को खोजना. लेकिन राजगोपाल जी ने बेगम के इतिहास को जिस साहित्यिक लालित्य के साथ लिखा है, वह अद्भुत है. हिंदी में ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास तो मिलते हैं, लेकिन इतिहास में साहित्य नहीं मिलता. यह पश्चिमी विधा है।
बाबू वृन्दावनलाल वर्मा और पंडित अमृतलाल नागर ने तमाम ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि के उपन्यास लिखे हैं, लेकिन उनमें इतिहास कम उनकी लेखनी का कमाल ज्यादा दिखता है. यहाँ तक, कि झाँसी की रानी लक्ष्मीबाई पर आधारित उपन्यास लिखते हुए भी वे बहक गए प्रतीत होते हैं. जबकि जब उन्होंने वह उपन्यास लिखा था, तब तक रानी को रू-ब-रू देखने वाले लोग भी मौजूद थे, पर उन्होंने सच्चाई को नहीं, अपनी श्रद्धा को ही अपने उपन्यास का आधार बनाया. नतीजा यह निकला, कि उनका रानी लक्ष्मीबाई पर लिखा उपन्यास महज़ एक फिक्शन साबित हुआ. उसकी ऐतिहासिकता को कोई नहीं मानता. वे अगर विष्णु भट्ट गोडसे का ‘माझा प्रवास’ ही पढ़ लेते तो भी रानी के बारे में एक अधिकृत उपन्यास लिख सकते थे. उन्हें सागर छावनी के खरीते पढने थे. लेविस और ह्यूरोज़ के बयान भी, पर ऐसा कुछ उन्होंने नहीं किया. इसी तरह पंडित अमृतलाल नागर ने भी ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों पर अपनी कल्पना को ज्यादा ऊपर रखा है. ‘ग़दर के फूल’ में इसकी बानगी देखने को मिलती है, जबकि इनके विपरीत बांग्ला की कथा लेखिका महाश्वेता देवी अपने उपन्यास ‘झाँसी की रानी’ में रानी के साथ ज्यादा न्याय करती दिखती हैं. वे इतिहास को तथ्यों के साथ लिखती हैं, बस वह साहित्य की शैली में लिखा जाता है, ताकि पाठक खुद को भी उपन्यास से बांधे रखे।
इसके विपरीत उर्दू और अंग्रेजी में ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास अपने नायक और पाठकों से कहीं अधिक न्याय करते हैं. शम्सुर्रहमान फारुकी का ‘कई चाँद थे सरे आसमां’ है एक उपन्यास लेकिन 18वीं सदी के भारत और दिल्ली दरबार की ऐतिहासिक स्थिति को जिस तरह से उन्होंने दिखाया है, वह अद्भुत है. विलियम डेलरिम्पल के अंग्रेजी में लिखे ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों में भी यही बात मिलती है. हालाँकि विलियम डेलरिम्पल की किताबों को उपन्यास कह देने से कुछ लोग बुरा मान सकते हैं, पर सत्य यही है. डेलरिम्पल ने लिखने में उपन्यास की ही शैली को लिया है, और यह जरूरी भी है. कोरा इतिहास इतना जटिल होता है, कि उसे सिवाय कोर्स के और कहीं कोई पढना नहीं चाहता, इसलिए हर सफल लेखक इतिहास में कुछ कल्पना का पुट डालता है, ताकि वह सिर्फ क्रोनोलाजी भर बन कर न रह जाए. राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा ने बेगम समरू का इतिहास लिखते समय इस लालित्य और इतिहास के तारतम्य को बनाए रखा है. इस वज़ह से यह एक ललित शैली में लिखा हुआ इतिहास बन पड़ा है. इस ‘समरू के सच’ की शुरुआत ही बड़े नाटकीय अंदाज़ में होती है, जब समरू साहब चांदनी चौक में गुलबदन बेगम के कोठे में नाच देखने के लिए जाते हैं, वहीँ फरजाना से उनकी आँखें चार होती हैं. षोडशी फरजाना के बात करने और उन्हें लुभाने की शैली पर वे इतने फ़िदा होते हैं, कि अपना दिल दे बैठते हैं. फरजाना से वे विवाह करते हैं, और फिर शुरू होती है बेगम समरू की कहानी!
राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा के साहस, धैर्य और उनके शोध को दाद देनी चाहिए, कि अत्यंत श्रम के साथ उन्होंने बेगम समरू का इतिहास लिखा है. इतिहासकारों की मेरिट से इतर वर्मा जी द्वारा लिखा यह इतिहास अपने आप में बेजोड़ है.
